The Return of Mego The return of toy manufacturer Mego ignited...

The Return of Mego

The return of toy manufacturer Mego ignited really excitement in the collector community. There was a large announcement before Comic-Con that Mego was back under the leadership of former CEO, Marty Abrams. The line would consist the classic 8-inch figures and a line of 14-inch figures (these consist of DC Comics characters at this point). Mego would also return to its bread and butter of media licensed figures.

The roll-out deserves a lot of credit. The excitement of the announcement was rapidly followed by the line being on display at Comic-Con and then the line turned up at Target, which seems to be the exclusive retail partner of Mego.

The initial licenses look to be collector favorites: DC Comics and Star Trek along with aging TV shows such as: Cheers, Happy Days, Charmed, Facts of Life, Charlie’s Angles and other 70s and 80s shows.

Full disclosure: I am too young to have really seen the heyday of the Mego 8-inch figure. The only reason I had them growing up is in the 80′s in many chains if a toy didn’t sell through they were discounted and left on the shelves until they moved. Western Auto, where my dad bought auto parts, had an upstairs “toyland” that was filled with Megos and 60′s GI Joes. This is largely responsible for my having played with toys out of time.

Vintage Megos have seen the prices continue to rise over the years and sees super devoted collector and fans. In recent years, Figures Toy Company has been producing retro 8-inch figures that borrow the body-type and classic packaging of classic Mego. They only thing they really lacked was the classic Mego logo.

Figures has also produced replicas of the boxed figures, Mego original shipped their 8 and 12-inch figures in boxes and not on the card.

NOTE: Mister Fantastic is a custom based on the original boxed Mego and NOT a Figures toy. The boxed Figures line is focused on DC Comics characters.

The new Megos are 8-inch carded figures. While they seemed to be rare on rollout, Mego saw the concern over ebay price gouging (the new Dracula was going for upwards of $75 dollars) and restocked Target and now all of their offerings are available from Target.com.

I haven’t picked up a card Mego since 1981 or ‘82 so I was excited to get a few of the new Megos. I decided I would grab two and the two I found were the ones I most wanted: Star Trek’s Chekov (not produced in the original Star Trek line) and Bela Lugosi as Dracula.

The Pros: These look like classic Mego! The body type and head sculpts look great. I was particularly impressed by the Lugosi head

While the face isn’t some 3D scanned perfect print it does what I would expect a toy of this type to do: It feels like Lugosi.

The Cons: While the Dracula costuming looks amazing, the Chekov collar looks to me falling off in the package. I am also disappointed in the card/packaging design. The gradients make the cards feel too busy and scattered and the typography feels like an afterthought at best. The original packaging was bold and colorful and drew your eyes to the logo and toy. Figures Toys have been utilizing the classic Mego packing design in their retro toys so these designs may not be available to the new Mego Corp for use.

Overall, these are really nice figures and at a price point of 14.99 to 17.99 (Dracula costs more) they are great collectables for fans of the licenses or classic Mego fans.
