Jim’s law practice flourished, and Barbara was a respected family therapist. With the birth of Carolyn, followed by Amanda two years later, the family they hoped for was complete.
When Amanda’s behavior began to decline in middle school and she then sank into the darkness of substance abuse, Barbara and Jim endured their own journeys as parents who were losing their child to a dangerous world. Barbara questioned herself as a therapist who was unable to help her own child, while Jim felt helpless and frustrated with the situation. There would be years of not hearing from Amanda, with occasional letters that would raise their hopes. With the strength and support of her family, Amanda finally deals with her inner demons and leaves the world of drugs behind, finding the love and happiness that escaped her for so long.
This story was inspired by my family member who battled with drugs for many years. One day when she was in rehab, I received a letter thanking me for not giving up on her. My goal in writing this novelette was for not just the person going through the battle of substance abuse, but also for their loved ones who are in it with them.
