I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher, Wednesday Books, for providing me with the ARC.
I must start out by saying this. Um…Hello, where did you come from? You were not even on my radar until last week. Why aren’t you getting more attention? The pretty pink cover doesn’t even start to describe you.
Now, that we have that out of the way. This book has been getting a lot of hype recently and it is as good as what people say it is. This is a dystopian story set in a very strict community in which the church and the men have complete control. The women are treated like objects and aren’t allowed to do anything. Part of this is that the church has complete control over everything and has told women that they have magic, which is a result of Eve and it will make men do evil things. Oh, women are also not allowed to gather, chose who they want to marry, and are sent into the woods in their sixteenth year to rid themselves of magic, aka the Grace Year. If they leave the place they have been sent during their grace year, poachers (men hired to kill) will hunt them down so their body parts can be sold for medicine. So, that is the tone of the world.
Tierney is our main character. She is smart, sassy, and questions everything. So, yeah, she’s really not that different than many of our young adult leads. This is her grace year and she has her heart set on working in the fields once she comes back. So, before the girls leave on their Grace Year, some of them receive a veil from a boy and that is who they are going to marry. The boys do all of the picking and the girls have no say. Tierney and the rest of her county believe that she will never get a veil because of her behaviour. This doesn’t really go as planned.
Michael is Tierney’s best friend. He has developed a crush on her and wants to save her from the hard life. He accepts her as she is and understands that he won’t be able to change her. To me, this is a great quality in a guy.
Rycker is our other main lead. He is a poacher. However, not everything is as what it seems with him. I really can’t go into details on his character without spoiling the book, but he is a lot more complex than what it seems.
The book opens up a lot of room for discussion. I can honestly see this as going down as a rather conversational book because of the context with the church. People are going to buck and say that it gives the church a bad rep. However, stop and think about it for a second. There are many places in our world where women are treated this way and it’s sad. I know a lot of people say that this book is just for girls, but the boys need to read this too. Girls are going to see that we need to stick together in our society. Boys, you will see that this is not how we treat girls.
It’s kind of funny how a lot of the negative reviews about this book are coming from male readers. They claim it makes them uncomfortable and is full of trigger warnings. Um, you know what? It probably makes you uncomfortable because at some point in your life you have probably treated a woman this way. This applies to everyone: if you want to grow as a person, you need to read and see things that make you uncomfortable.
Okay, I’m done preaching. This book, which I predict will be a bestseller, is currently on my top reads of 2019. The Grace Year will be out on October 1, 2019.

Book: The Priory of the Orange Tree
Author: Samantha Shannon

Here we go again. This is one of the most talked about books of 2019 and I couldn’t get into it. I love high fantasy and dragons, but this one just didn’t mesh well with me. I don’t know why, because I should have liked it. It had everything that I love in fantasy-amazing world building, a complex plot, great characters, and more.
Let’s talk about the writing. Samantha is certainly a good writer. She has this way of just throwing the reader into the world and making it seem as if you are actually there. I love how big the world was as well. However, I really felt like there were some parts that Samantha wrote very well and other parts not so much. It felt like that we spent so much time fleshing out the world that a lot of the plot actually ended up suffering. For example, I wish we had spent less time developing the Priory and more time on what should had been an epic fantasy battle. It didn’t happen and, therefore, the climax of the story was lost. Let me tell you: you do not want this to happen in fantasy.
To make everything worse: this is a standalone. We will never get it either.
I love the characters and how complex they were. I really liked the concept of how we need a female heir instead of a male and how the country is ruled by queens instead of kings. I really enjoyed this. I honestly have never read a fantasy where the family line is traced through the female side and not the male. So, points for that. However, here we go again, I never got the sense from the characters that everything was going not going to be okay. Nothing felt dramatic. I wasn’t worried about them at all in the battle or attacks or really anything. There just wasn’t that sense there that someone was going to die.
Let’s keep going on about characters. None of them are going to leave their mark on fantasy. I hate to say but they are not. Let’s talk about one the most popular high fantasy series out there right now: A Song of Ice and Fire. For those of you who don’t know what that it, think about a little show called Game of Thrones. Here we have female strong. Strong female characters who are memorable. Let’s see a show of hands. Are you honestly going to remember the characters from this book? Are you going to remember Tane or Daenerys? I think we all know the answer there. It’s Daenerys. Why? In my mind, her character is so much fleshed out.
The plot twists weren’t even plot twists. Like with the characters, there wasn’t a sense that something was going to go wrong. You just knew that in the end that everything was going to be okay. Again, not just with fantasy, you need to have this sense that things are not going to work out. You need to have that fear that something is going to do wrong. Samantha tries to do this, but it just doesn’t work. It was like she was focused on trying to create something different, but it cost her the plot. If she wants to make it as a high fantasy writer, she needs to improve on this. If this sense of everything is going to be okay doesn’t go away, then she will never make it in this genre. I’m sorry, but no.
I’m giving this a three star. I liked the world and the characters, but there was just so much wrong with this. I really should lower my rating, but, in my mind, I can’t.

I would like to thank Algonquin Young Readers for providing me with this ARC.
This is probably the strangest book I’ve read in a long time. I honestly have never read anything like this or so far out there. Now, this does not mean that this is a bad book, but it does take some getting used to. I also didn’t know that this was magical realism when I started. I’m honestly not a fan of magical realism; it’s really hard to me to get into.
So this book is a middle grade book, but like with some many other middle grade books as of late, it features a lot of well-developed characters and a complex plot. I did personally enjoy some elements of this, but at other times I didn’t. a lot really wasn’t explained for much of the book. The author expects you to know what is going on and just go along with it. I guess this is why I’m not sure a huge fan of this genre; I enjoy world building and I really want to see it in all of my books.
The characters are really fleshed out, which is also something that I liked. I like how we knew a lot about some characters, but others we really didn’t know anything about. It really added to the whole world building aspects and actually made me keep reading because I had to know just what kind of a role these characters were going to play.
While the writing style was really enjoyable and simple, there were a lot of elements that just didn’t really make sense or were fleshed out a lot. I feel like had we had more detail, things would had felt better…If that makes any sense…It’s quirky and out there, but it just felt like there wasn’t enough there. Okay, what I’m getting at is everything felt rushed, which made it kind of difficult to connect with everything.
I know a lot of other people have pointed this out, it’s the last hundred pages that really make this book. It just feels like that is the core of the story. However, with this being a standalone-I believe it is, correct me if I’m wrong-that is a big problem. I honestly feel like as a middle school teacher a lot of my students would DNF this book because of how the pacing is.
Anyway, this book comes out on October 15, 2019.

This is probably the strangest book I’ve read in a long time. I honestly have never read anything like this or so far out there. Now, this does not mean that this is a bad book, but it does take some getting used to. I also didn’t know that this was magical realism when I started. I’m honestly not a fan of magical realism; it’s really hard to me to get into.
So this book is a middle grade book, but like with some many other middle grade books as of late, it features a lot of well-developed characters and a complex plot. I did personally enjoy some elements of this, but at other times I didn’t. a lot really wasn’t explained for much of the book. The author expects you to know what is going on and just go along with it. I guess this is why I’m not sure a huge fan of this genre; I enjoy world building and I really want to see it in all of my books.
The characters are really fleshed out, which is also something that I liked. I like how we knew a lot about some characters, but others we really didn’t know anything about. It really added to the whole world building aspects and actually made me keep reading because I had to know just what kind of a role these characters were going to play.
While the writing style was really enjoyable and simple, there were a lot of elements that just didn’t really make sense or were fleshed out a lot. I feel like had we had more detail, things would had felt better…If that makes any sense…It’s quirky and out there, but it just felt like there wasn’t enough there. Okay, what I’m getting at is everything felt rushed, which made it kind of difficult to connect with everything.
I know a lot of other people have pointed this out, it’s the last hundred pages that really make this book. It just feels like that is the core of the story. However, with this being a standalone-I believe it is, correct me if I’m wrong-that is a big problem. I honestly feel like as a middle school teacher a lot of my students would DNF this book because of how the pacing is.
Anyway, this book comes out on October 15, 2019.

t’s time for a sneak peek. This week I am working with Algonquin Young Readers to bring you a sneak peek of The Jumbie God’s Revenge by Tracey Baptiste!
Summary:
In book three of the popular Jumbies series, Corinne must use her emerging supernatural powers to battle the angry god who would destroy her Caribbean island home.
When an out-of-season hurricane sweeps through Corinne’s seaside village, Corinne knows it’s not a typical storm.
