Book: High Heels and Beetle Crushers: The Losses, and Loves of an Officer and Lady

I would like to thank the publisher, Chronos Books, for sending me an ARC.
I went into this one completely blind. I didn’t know what it was about, but I really do enjoy this publisher, so I thought I would give it a try. I was actually very surprised at just how much I enjoyed this book. Like other books from Chronos Books, it’s written in a very easy, yet formative, writing style that allows for anyone to be able to follow the historical events without knowing anything about. Once again, I knew nothing about Women’s Royal Army Corps nor really all that much about modern military life. The way that Jackie wrote this memoir made it so easy to dive right into the story and the people. I read pretty big chunks of this book in one sitting. I just couldn’t put it down. Jackie is an amazing woman and storyteller.
I like how Jackie brought in so many of the struggles of being a woman in the post war era. She talked about how women were just expected to marry and not want more. She wanted more and wanted a career-which she really didn’t want to give up. I like how she wasn’t afraid to put that out there. Granted, she did find love and all of that, but I like that she knew what she wanted and went after it. Plus, she opened up about her rough home life and her love for her mother, which was probably kind of difficult to put there out. She talks about how changes in her life led her to live the life she did. Everything was so detailed that made this book really not read like a memoir. It actually felt like I was reading a historical fiction. I know, I know, this is a real book, but still. Fiction readers will be able to get into her story and see a strong woman.
I also like how she just didn’t focus on the good times. Everyone knows that life isn’t always easy-despite what a lot of books like us to think. She brought up a lot of hurt and struggles throughout the story and how it just took time to heal. Plus, she talked about her struggles at home, which had to be very difficult to write about. I like that she lays everything out. In the middle of all of the bad times, she tells us of the bonds with her mother-remembering fondly on the clothes her mother made for her and the friendships she developed in the army. This just goes to show that ever in the worst of times there is always something to laugh about, something to bring a little bit of joy into the darkest of times.
So, I know this review is a little bit all over the place, but I just really enjoyed this book, which comes out on January 1, 2020.

I would like to thank the publisher, Inkyard Press, for sending me an ARC.
I went into this book knowing nothing about. The summary sounded really interesting. This book follows Jinx and her family as they struggle to survive against a very corrupt government. Her father has them all trained to survive in bad situations. They have spent their entire life drilling for this moment, but, only this time, this is not a drill. The government is really after them.
This is a more of a political book than anything. It is action packed as the characters try to survive in a world where everything is not prefect nor is it really what it seems. We have a fast paced plot with a complex world and complex characters that is bound to suck in you. Once you are in, it’s really hard to get out. As I was reading, I really was taken back to The Hunger Games, Legend, and Divergent-even though this book really isn’t like them. it’s been awhile since I’ve read a good dystopian and this is just what I needed. Plus, Kelly just has this way of sucking you in.
The way that Kelly writes it is sure to leave you on the edge of your seat. I mean, you will be pulled in and will be shocked how quickly time passes as you are reading. The action and the characters just kept me going and going. I found myself flying through this book because I just had to know what was going to happen. I just couldn’t put it done until I reached the end of the action sequence. If you decide to pick this one up, you will find out what I am talking about.
The characters were pretty well developed and great at hiding their true actions. I mean, the big reveal at the end just left me stunned. I guess if I had been expecting it to actually go down that way, there were pretty clever clues throughout the story. I just don’t know what to think. These characters will be memorable-even the side ones. I’m just throwing that out there.
Overall, a great read if you are looking for something in the science fiction genre. I know I really enjoyed it. Now, this book is out now so if you want to, go ahead and pick it up. You will not be sorry.

I would like to thank the publisher, Chronos Books, for being so kind as to think of me again. I would like to send a shout out to Ben and Sarah for sending me an ARC of this book.
I’m just going to put this out there: I had no idea there was such an Irish presence in the Caribbean. Mikki introduced a completely new topic to me and I love that. I love learning new things and being exposed to things that aren’t often talked about. Whenever I think of the historical Caribbean I always think of the Spanish and the African slave trade. I had no idea that something similar was going on with the Irish.
This book couldn’t have come at a better either. For those of you who don’t know, I teach fifth grade history. We are getting ready to talk about the Caribbean and the impacts that European exploration had on the region. This will be a nice little add on for my students. It’s not talked about at all in our program, which don’t even get me started on that. This book will help give my students a little extra edge. Not only we will be talking about a subject that isn’t hardly spoken of this book does a nice job of explaining the difference between a slave and indentured servant.
I love how easy this book is to read. I’ve already said that I didn’t know anything about this subject prior to reading this. Like with all books I’ve read by this publisher, it is super easy to read and everything is explained very nicely. You can jump into this book without knowing anything and walk out with a feeling that you’ve learned something. This is what I like in my nonfiction. I like being able to easy read it and learning at the same time. The everyday language and easy to follow format makes this read more like a novel than anything. I guess what I’m getting at is we don’t have that dry textbook read here.
I also liked that we got to see some everyday people. A lot of times history just focuses on the upper class. I get it: we have more records about the upper class than the lower class. Here, it’s almost like Mikki does the opposite. We get to experience history through the poor and rougher ends of society. Now, the Church is involved a lot in the book and I believe that’s where a lot of the refences came from, but still. I give this book a round of applause for including all aspects of life.
Overall, I am very happy that I read this. It’s an easy to read book and isn’t very long at all. It’s only 240 pages.

Writing Update: Fairytale
Hello, everyone!
It's been awhile since I've talked about my writing. It seems like all I have been doing as of late is talk about other peoples' books. I guess this leads us to where I'm going today.
Fairytale is the fourth book in my Once series. I have been working on it for well over a year now and I should have it up sometime this fall. I ended up changing the ending of the series and had to make some adjustments to Fairytale.
Anyway, I haven't forgotten about my own stories and I will have something up very soon.
