Main Character Monday Interview: Emmie Becker

Welcome to another Main Character Monday Interview! Today’s guest is Emeline Becker from the novella Sugar and Spice by Heather Greer. Sugar and Spice is part of the Love in Any Season novella collection.

Before we begin today’s interview, I want to encourage readers to join in the Love in Any Season Social Media Scavenger Hunt beginning September 23, 2022. To celebrate the release of Love in Any Season, the authors are giving away one $60 Amazon gift card (US only). Clues will be given on 15 different social media posts, podcasts, and videos. Collect these clues and submit them by 11:59pm on October 4th for an entry into the drawing. To find out more, be sure to come back here next week. I will have a daily updated list of places to visit for the clues.

Now on to our interview. Emeline, please tell us a bit about yourself.

First, please, call me Emmie. I grew up in a fairy tale town right here in Missouri. I’m not joking. You should see the town. The architecture is beautiful German style all throughout. And every year in winter, we tap into our heritage with the Gingerbread Festival. It’s a celebration full of fun events every small town festival should have.

Can you share something readers might find unusual about you?

I’m the owner of the only bakery in town. While that isn’t overly unusual, it does create problems for me. I told you about the Gingerbread Festival. Well, I supply all that gingerbread. The unusual thing? I despise gingerbread. It’s practically torture to have it take over the Sugar and Spice bakery every December.

If you could solve one world problem, which one would you solve?

That is such a tough one. There are so many to choose from, so many hurting people. But my town is very family oriented. So, I think I would find good, Christian homes for all the children who need one. Give these kids their best start with love, stability, and faith.

The New Testament tells of Mary and Martha. Two sisters who react to a visit from Jesus in very different ways. Mary chooses to spend time with Him, while Martha chooses to take care of the physical needs. Are you more Mary or Martha?

Though I might trip over my own feet sometimes, I think I’m still more of a mover and doer. I need to work on slowing down and listening to God more. I mean, I do listen, but sometimes He has to catch me on the run. Know what I mean?

I think I do. ”Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” James 1:27 – Do you think living out this verse would make a difference in your life? How?

I think this goes back to your earlier question about problem solving. I’ve been blessed to grow up in a place that tries to help those who need a little hand. Don’t we all need help at one time or another? That’s something I’m proud of New Kuchenbrünn for. Even in their fun festival time, they still think of others. Each year they host a Cookies for Kids event that provides food for families and gifts for children when their parents can’t. If we all looked at how we could reach beyond ourselves every day of the year, we’d all be better for it.

Is there a verse of scripture that holds great meaning in your life?

There are many verses that speak to me on a regular basis. One of my favorites, because it speaks to me as a baker, is Psalm 34:8, “Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!”

If you could leave readers with one message, what would it be?

It’s easy to let the negative things of the past influence who we are in the future. I’m learning how important it is to let God heal and when necessary, forgive. And for me, offering that healing and forgiving to others and myself is also important. Only then can I move forward into all the great things God has for me.

Next we’re going to do some Just for Fun and Rapid Fire questions. Here’s the first one. If you could buy one thing, without worrying about the cost, what would you buy?

The totally selfish answer would be a brand new state-of-the-art kitchen. Given the direction a lot of your questions have gone, though, I’d say provisions for needy families.

What one hobby would you keep if you had to give up all other hobbies?

Since baking is my job and not my hobby, I get to keep that one by default, right? This is hard. With my hours at the bakery, I don’t think I have a lot of hobbies. I do enjoy a great book though. I don’t think I’d give that up.

Apples or Pears? Apples.

Indoors or Outside? Both. Is that cheating?

Reading or Writing? Reading. My creativity is in the kitchen only.

If you had only three words to describe Heather Greer, what would they be? Story-teller, kindred spirit, and, hmmm, dreamer.

Thank you for joining us, Emmie. Readers, keep going for more on Sugar and Spice. And don’t forget to come back next week to enter the Love in Any Season Social Media Scavenger Hunt.

More on Sugar and Spice:

Emeline Becker, owner of Sugar and Spice Bakery, loves New Kuchenbrünn, except for the gingerbread. As the only bakery, she supplies the annual Gingerbread Festival with the one treat she can’t stand. It’s gingerbread everywhere!

Things get worse when Ryker Lehmann is hired as the festival photographer. He was her secret teen crush, her sister’s boyfriend, and witness to her worst humiliation. Plus, he broke her sister’s heart and bruised hers when he left town after graduation. Now, he’s back in town, determined to fix their friendship before the festival ends.

With gingerbread and Ryker together, can Emmie make it through the festival with her mind and heart intact?

Seasons: Wednesday in the Word

seasonsI’m blessed to live in an area that experiences all four seasons. I can’t imagine living where you can celebrate Christmas with a picnic on the beach. Of course, if I can find a place with perpetual fall, I’m all in. Autumn is the most wonderful time of the year.

Yes, I know the song is about Christmas. And while I do agree that Christmas is the most wonderful celebration of the year, if we’re talking seasons, I’m sticking with fall. I’m also aware that autumn doesn’t actually begin until September 22, but we’re not going to split hairs on this one. This is my favorite time of year, whether it’s technically started or not. I will, however, wait a couple more weeks to put out my pumpkins, mums, and colorful leaf decorations.

Some think fall and winter are less than because “everything is dead or dying”. They don’t see the value in these seasons. They want the green leaves and growing flowers. But I’ve always seen beauty in these two seasons. I find peace in them. They remind me, even in death or times without measurable growth, there is beauty.

The colors, scents, and crispness of a fall day are perfect for slowing down and letting memories wash over you. I’ve always seen autumn as the most nostalgia filled season, with winter as a close second. That’s beautiful. And a world draped in winter’s glistening snow? That’s beautiful too and can usher in a peaceful hush.

As much as people may enjoy the vibrancy of spring and summer, the world needs autumn and winter. It’s not only a tearing down of what’s growing tired. There’s also a building up and preparation for the new life to come as winter gives way to spring. Autumn and winter are seasonal resets.

But as much as I think I would love to live in perpetual fall, in reality, I probably wouldn’t. Yes, the temperatures would be perfect. However, without summer’s heat or the sogginess of spring, would I appreciate the gifts of fall nearly as much? Probably not.

There’s a reason Ecclesiastes 3 begins with, “To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven.” (I encourage taking time to read the first 8 verses.) In our world there is a reason for each season, and in our lives there is reason as well.

When we’re in the easy seasons, the comfortable seasons, we wish they could last forever. Who looks forward to moving into a harder time? Does anyone hunger for times when it feels like nothing is moving forward, like we’ve entered a spiritual or emotional hibernation? It feels like death. The bright sunshine of everything going well gives way to cool winds that push us in directions we’re unfamiliar with. Sometimes, they even usher in the cold, darkness of winter where every move we make is like trudging through a mountain of snow, if we’re able to move at all.

Those times have a purpose. They slow us down. In our attempts to seek direction or the times when we’re trudging instead of running with ease, God reminds us to turn to Him. He’s there with direction and strength. God knows what storms our next spring and summer will bring. He uses the autumn and winter of our souls to prepare us for the new growth and the thunderstorms.

These seasons happen in our faith, families, and ministries. I’m currently in a fall and winter in my writing life. No, I don’t think it’s ending. But I think God has brought me to a place where I have to slow down and turn to Him. There is a spring full of new experiences right around the corner for me. Early 2023 will bring with it many changes I feel less than equipped for. But this in-between time, this fall and winter, isn’t for my detriment. It’s for my preparation. It’s allowing me to seek God for answers and rely on Him to show me what I need to be ready for the new growth that’s coming.

I’m blessed to know the season of growth that’s ahead of me. That doesn’t always happen. We aren’t always clued in to what’s ahead on our path or when spring will finally come. It doesn’t matter. In fact, one area of our life may be spring or summer while another is autumn or winter. The important thing is for us to remember, no matter the season, there is a reason for it. And when we embrace it, there is beauty in each season.

Have you seen the beauty of each season?

What I’m Reading: The Nazarene’s Price

What I'm Reading: The Nazarene's PriceWhat I’m Reading this week is The Nazarene’s Price, the debut biblical fiction story of Donna K. Stearns. Elk Lake Press published this title. The story is available in both eBook and paperback.

Biblical fiction is not my go-to genre. I read very little of it. The closest I think I’ve read is the historical re-telling of Jacob’s story from Liz Curtis Higgs, and seeing how that’s set in Scotland, it’s not really biblical fiction. Good thing you don’t have to be a huge fan of the genre to really enjoy this book!

First, I love the cover. It feels like I’m standing at that window looking out on the world. I’m part of the action. If I’m invited into the story before I ever read the first page, I call that a win. Kudos to the cover designer. I can’t imagine a more perfect cover for this book.

I find it amazing that someone can take the brief appearance of the rich young ruler in scripture and craft an entire story around him. But really, the man had a life. God didn’t just pop him into creation for a five minute talk with Jesus and then make him disappear. The author beautifully fleshes out possible details of this very real man’s life and weaves them with true accounts from scripture transporting readers to Israel at the time Jesus walked the earth. Matthias’s story (because that is the name the author gave the unnamed ruler) is one of seeking truth about Jesus. I think that’s something we can all relate to and learn from. And The Nazarene’s Price encourages readers to do just that with an engaging story and a cast of characters both new and familiar.

For this week’s What I’m Reading, I give The Nazarene’s Price five stars.

Here’s where you can  read a preview and get a copy of The Nazarene’s Price.

Too Quiet: Wednesday in the Word

too quietLast night, it was too quiet in my house.

When I first got married, I couldn’t sleep when my husband was away on business trips. A friend crashed at our house whenever he left so I could get some rest. Over time, I got better about it. As long as the kids were home, I could sleep. They created enough noise that I was able to ignore the other nighttime noises.

Last night was the first night my husband’s been gone overnight since we became empty nesters. I didn’t even attempt sleeping until 1am. It didn’t matter. I didn’t sleep right away. And when I did finally doze off, that’s exactly what it was, dozing. I slept a minute and then woke up. Slept again and woke up again. When the sun came up, I was finally able to fall into a fitful sleep for a few hours.

I’m exhausted.

My problem? When the noises of the day are over, everything is too quiet. Without the television or traffic or anything other normal noises the quiet allows me to hear all the odd noises my brain is usually able to shut out. Every creak of a floorboard. Every tick of the clock. I hear it all, and it keeps me awake. I pray for rain when Andy’s gone. It provides static that blocks everything else from my mind.

But too quiet isn’t always bad. My struggle last night brought Psalm 46:10 to mind this morning. “Be still and know that I am God.” When Elijah waited forGod to speak, he didn’t hear it in the loud storm or fire. It was a whisper when everything was quiet.

I often complain about not hearing God clearly. But how often am I putting myself in a place of quiet so I can?

When it’s too quiet in my home, I’m able to hear what the activity of the day hides. The sounds are always there, but too many others shout louder in my ears. It’s the same with God’s voice. Loud things clamoring for my attention fill my days. They drown out the whisper of God.

I need to find the “too quiet”. When I do, God’s voice will be able to come through loud and clear. Only instead of a restless night that leaves me exhausted, this time of hearing what is too often drowned out will leave me strengthened, refreshed, and moving in the right directions.

How do you create the “too quiet” places in your day to hear God’s voice? Do you have a special place that creates a quiet environment to hear Him?

Woefully Unprepared: Wednesday in the Word

Woefully UnpreparedWoefully unprepared.

Can I get this on a t-shirt?

I remember learning to do summersaults under the water as a kid. I loved it. At least, I did until I became disoriented. Beneath the water with my lungs demanding a return to the surface, I twisted and kicked. I didn’t break through the water’s barrier. Was I swimming for freedom in the wrong direction? Fear of the unknown flooded my system. I couldn’t focus or recognize the clues that would lead me to oxygen. If thinking logically were possible, I’d simply stop trying and allow myself to float.

It wasn’t. I didn’t.

Obviously, I finally surfaced since my story doesn’t end with my untimely demise.

I still recall those panicked feelings. The fear that I’d lost my way and had no sense of direction to right myself again. I’ve experienced that same feeling many times since then. This summer of woefully unprepared has left the disorientation, lack of focus, and inability to think logically bubbling under the surface of my life.

Like Peter, Jesus has called me from the boat of what I know onto the stormy sea of the unknown.

While I’ve comfortably worked behind the scenes of a writing podcast, He’s moved me into the uncomfortable territory of participating in the recording of faith and family based podcast. While I’m not the host, even serving as the sidekick brings a few waves to the water under my feet.

Publishing schedules combined with ministry schedules to create a hurricane force wind of deadlines in July. I was already feeling the force of writing outside my usual genre before Covid amped up the wind blowing around me. With a novel to finish, a novella to write, a youth camp to direct, and a VBS to direct all within three weeks of each other, the wind threatened to force me under the choppy waters.

While the waves crashed under me and the wind whipped around me, the heavens opened up a torrential downpour as I faced a business decision with the potential to affect my  life in the personal, professional, and ministry spheres. It held the potential to bring great blessing or be to my detriment. I prayed. Trusted the answer. Then, I took another step into the unknown as thunder crashed overhead and lightening split the sky.

My decision propelled me into a world I’m currently woefully unprepared to handle. There is so much to do and learn to enable the venture’s success. I’m not even sure the starting point, but I must begin.

Then, again, I remember Peter. Nothing about the fisherman’s life prepared him to step out of the boat. There was not one reason to believe his venture onto the stormy sea would find success. He was, as I am, woefully unprepared. And as long as he focused on those earthly facts, Peter had no ability to walk on water.

But Peter did walk on water. He didn’t have to have the answers. His success didn’t depend on his ability or training or talent. Peter walked on the water when he relied on Jesus’ power and leading.

As I go forward in this unknown new journey, I’ll be a faithful steward of my path. I’ll learn what I need to learn and listen to those who have come before. I will seize every opportunity to grow in my knowledge of subjects needed for success, and I will put my heart into my work.

Even as I do those things, I will strive to remember it’s not my preparedness that will bring ultimate success. It is relying on Jesus’ power and leading that will bring success as I step out of the boat and onto the stormy sea.

The Heart of the Mountains Review: On Tour with Celebrate Lit

The Heart of the Mountains Review

About the Book

Book: The Heart of the Mountains

Author: Pepper Basham

Genre: Christian Fiction / Romance

Release date: July 1, 2022

Can their hearts overcome the darkness of the mountains?

To escape a forced marriage, Cora Taylor travels from England to the Blue Ridge Mountains in search of her brother, who is working as a teacher in a mission school. She hopes to find a place where her nursing skills and independent ideas will be accepted and appreciated, but nothing prepares her for the wild mixture of isolation, community, brokenness, and hope within these mountains…or in the person of Jeb McAdams.

Returning from the devastation of World War 1 emotionally damaged, Jeb McAdams struggles against the rampant mountain alcoholism to soothe his nightmares. It’s easy to hide within the mountains, or it was, before Cora Taylor arrived. Now, she seems to show up at every turn, bringing her modern ideas, curiosity, and beautiful eyes with her.

Bound by their shared war history, the pair develop an unlikely friendship, which unexpectedly hints to something more. But when Cora’s desire to help the women of the mountains crosses an unspoken line, will Jeb be able to protect this feisty flatlander from the wrath of the mountain men or will he end up losing much more than his heart?

MY THOUGHTS: A beautifully written story that grabs your attention from the first page. Though Cora’s constant need to prove herself against the men in her life is something that generally turns me off of a character, her circumstances and acknowledgment of this tendency helped me see past that to the loving, giving woman she is. And I loved Jeb from the moment he was introduced. The characters in the story are what makes The Heart of the Mountains such an attention keeping story. The ways they interact, their flaws, and even the challenges they bring with them make the story richer.

The descriptions of the mountains are wonderfully written. They invite you into the setting and encourage you to stay a while. And there are truths woven throughout the book that bring depth to the story.

I give The Heart of the Mountains five stars.

More from Pepper

It’s so interesting how one idea can influence an entire series, or…how one person’s story can.

The idea for The Heart of the Mountains started in Laurel’s Dream with a hint of a family history story about a girl named Kizzie. (Someday, I hope to bring Kizzie’s story to the pages of a book). From there, the idea began to grow out of a love for my Appalachian culture into a series of books which highlighted (and fictionalized) stories from my family history.

The main story in The Heart of the Mountains is about Jeb and Cora, two different people with similar servant hearts, but the secondary story that touched me so much was the one based on my great grandfather’s life. I write about it in the Author’s Note at the end of the novel, so I won’t go into detail about it. However, what I loved getting to do is bring the truth of God’s redemption in my great grandfather’s life…to life again.

I never knew “Papa Rat”. I only knew the stories handed down to me by my granny and my mama, but in writing this story, I feel as though I had a tiny opportunity to “meet” him in these pages. He was a gruff mountain man with a broken past which led him to make a whole lot of broken choices, but his story is incredibly encouraging, because it points to the God of broken people. My great grandpa wasn’t left in his brokenness, but, after years of running away from God, he would later recount that God pursued him. The beauty of Sam McAdams’ journey in The Heart of the Mountains is only a little glimpse into what I imagine my great grandpa’s redemption story looked like.

Because my great grandpa was forever changed when Jesus saved him (as any of us should be).

I think that’s what my granny and her siblings (and even “Papa Rat” himself) would want most -that his story would point to Jesus. I hope that’s what you see when you read about Sam McAdams in The Heart of the Mountains.

Have you ever read a book based on family history? One of my favorites is Catherine Marshall’s Christy.

Rebuilding Hearts Review: On Tour with Celebrate Lit

Rebuilding Hearts Review

About the Book

Book: Rebuilding Hearts

Author: Carolyn Miller

Genre: Christian Contemporary Romance

Release date: June 28, 2022

Who knew a bank robbery could show a girl that good guys still exist?

Tim Franklin. Quiet, shy, almost incapable of speaking to a girl, and a budding horticulturist. Oh, and he survived a bank robbery five years ago, not to mention its resulting trauma.

Bookworm Bella Dwyer just wants to feel safe, and Tim’s actions during the robbery made her believe there might be guys who live up to her fictional heroes. Trouble is, a chance with Tim seems as remote as this year’s celebrity heartthrob.

Instead, she settled for a relationship with a guy who’s commitment-phobic.

So when Bella encounters Tim on tiny Sparrow Island, the challenges of her past and present collide, and she questions whether there really is a future with a man who can’t commit.

In a leap of faith, Bella dumps her boyfriend, even before shy-guy Tim can make a move. But in wanting to live by faith and conquer fear, has she made the right choice, or are her hopes for freedom and a future destined to fail?

Read the next Sparrow Island novel in the Independence Islands Series featuring five islands, six authors, and a boatload of happily-ever-afters.

The Independence Islands Series: beach reads aren’t just for summer anymore.

MY THOUGHTS: How often do our perceptions of situations create faulty images of ourselves or give us unrealistic future expectations? Bella’s life and romance goals are tied to a hero she never met. Her romance reading tendencies don’t help that either. Tim’s past haunts him with his failures until he thinks he’s got nothing to give. Whether you’re a Tim or a Bella or only know people like them, you can enjoy their story and come away with a bit of truth. The characters are fun, the setting is wonderful, and the story is sweet.

I give Rebuilding Hearts four stars.

Many avid readers I know love the idea of working in a library – so imagine working in a library on a tiny island! And then to encounter a handsome borrower of books with arms of Thor, well, it’d be like a fictional hero come to life. Except maybe this hero isn’t so fictional…

For Rebuilding Hearts, my next book in the Independence Islands series, I loved turning the spotlight onto Tim Franklin, Greener Gardens’ strong, silent employee with secret dreams, and exploring what happens when two opposites attract over a shared love of books and movies.

Rebuilding Hearts explores some bigger questions concerning family, identity and whether God’s plans can be considered good when things go wrong. I love writing fiction that’s grounded in truth, with realistic, flawed characters who are on God journeys to find faith, freedom, and love.

I’m so thankful people are enjoying my contemporary books, where I can share my love of gardens (& my horticulturalist hubby’s expertise!) to a new audience. Please check out my website www.carolynmillerauthor.com to see what’s growing in my garden here in my corner of Australia.

If you enjoy stories of hope, heart and humor, then you’ll be sure to enjoy this novel about a librarian and a Hemsworthy hero as together they find restoration for their hearts.

Happy reading!

Carolyn

Mistletoe Village Review: On Tour with Celebrate Lit

Mistletoe Village Review

About the Book

Book: Mistletoe Village

Author: Kathleen J. Robison

Genre: Holiday Romance

Release date: November 30, 2021

Two broken women, two defeated children. Can Grace offer what they’re looking for? When the big city holds nothing but painful memories for sisters Rence and Sandy, they pack it up and head out for Grace and the promises it holds.

Promises of a new start. A new job at Grace General for Rence and a place to begin healing. But most of all, a promise to each of the sisters’ hurting children that a real Christmas awaits them in Grace, complete with snow on giant evergreens and lots of Mistletoe Magic.

But despite its Christmas card atmosphere, Grace, Oregon seems to hold a lot of secrets. Who is that giant of a man they encounter in the woods? Why won’t anyone talk about him? What is the hold the past seems to have over the town? Will they be able to break it before history tragically repeats itself? And will Grace be the place where love and forgiveness finally meet?

MY THOUGHTS: A town fit for a Christmas card is the perfect setting. Who can read a story set in a place like that and not want to plan a holiday visit? But for Rence and Sandy, their perfect Christmas town harbors a secret. I enjoyed watching the town and new relationships heal the hurts of the past for Rence, Sandy, and their kids. And from their first unfortunate meeting in the woods to the last page, I loved the giant in the woods. And just wait until you visit Mistletoe Village. Even in July, it ushers in the magic of Christmas.

I give this book 4 stars. If you love a good Christmas story, you don’t want to miss this one.

More from Kathleen

I love Christmas stories, and since becoming an author, I’ve wanted to write one. Mistletoe Villagestarted out as Mistletoe Hermit, but then it wasn’t going in quite the happy direction that I wanted. So Mistletoe Village was born. I wrote this sweet, cozy, slightly suspenseful romance with all the elements that make Christmas … Christmas! But most importantly, it’s always about the faith element, Christ.

The main character Rence Paladin is dear to my heart. She was created with someone extraordinary in mind, and I had that person read the book to see what she thought. When she finished, she turned bright red and answered, even if you hadn’t told me … I knew it was me! However, it’s not her story, but it encompasses her delightful personality, some of her sweet memories of a single-mom, and how she strives to keep her focus on Christ while always serving others.

So let’s go. Let me take you to Mistletoe Village. You’ll find a little of everything that oozes Christmas in the tiny town of Grace. Holiday spirit, decorations, a children’s church pageant, and a Christmas festival. Oh, and I’ll introduce you to little Gus, the feisty family cock-a-poo. But most of all, I hope you, like Rence and Carl, rediscover the joy of Christmas at Mistletoe Village.

Perfectly Placed Review: On Tour with Celebrate Lit

Perfectly Placed On Tour With Celebrate Lit Review

About the Book

Book: Perfectly Placed

Author: Liana George

Genre: Contemporary Christian Women’s Fiction

Release date: July 5, 2022

Nicki’s tasked with making New Hope the perfect place for orphaned children.

So why has everything gone wrong?

Six weeks after leaving China, Nicki Mayfield returns to complete two critical tasks: restore order at New Hope Orphanage and re-connect with the little girl who stole her heart. However, between a stubbornly stone walling supervisor, missing documents, and personal tragedy, Nicki faces challenges at every turn. Is she the best person to bring order – and longevity – to the place these children call home? Then, with the help of an unexpected ally, Nicki makes a life-altering decision that upends her well-planned life and the lives of those around her. Will she lose it all, or has she found the way to save what matters most?

MY THOUGHTS: This is the second in a series, and if you haven’t read Perfectly Arranged, you’re going to want to do that. You could read Perfectly Placed without it, but the story is going to be much richer if you read book one first. Plus, you’ll have a better understanding of the characters. And you definitely want to know the characters. Just like us, they all have flaws. But Nicki and her friends want to be better people than they were the day before and they also want to follow God a little more each day.

I can’t imagine trying to complete a job in a country where language and customs were a barrier, especially not a task with the life and death ramifications Nicki’s job has. But Nicki has committed to it, and she wants to see it through. It’s an experience that grows Nicki as a person and in her faith, and we as readers get to join her on the trip. I can’t wait to see where the third book in the series is going to take Nicki. I give this book five stars.

More from Liana

Have you ever eaten at a Chinese restaurant and taken a fortune cookie with you when you left? Yeah, me too. For the longest time, I always associated these Pac-Man shaped treats with Chinese food and by extension, Chinese culture.

I was wrong.

The tsujiura senbei,” or “fortune cracker,” actually originated in Japan and was brought over to the United States sometime between the late 1800s and early 1900s by immigrants. Japanese bakers first began selling and making these crackers in California and Hawaii. With their unique taste and finger-sized slip of paper printed with a pithy fortune or aphorism, they quickly became a hit.

Today, the fascination with these cookies is still at an all-time high, but the ingredients have changed. Originally, they were made with miso and sesame flavoring but now they use butter and vanilla to give it that sweet taste you and I are so familiar with.

So, why am I telling you all this?

Because my novel, Perfectly Placed, book 2 in The Hopeful Heart Series, begins with the main character, Nicki Mayfield, breaking into a fortune cookie and discovering a proverb that will motivate her and move her to action. What was written on that tiny slip of paper? There’s only one way to find out. Grab a copy of Perfectly Placed – and a cookie or two – and start reading!
