Returning to Breakers Review: On Tour with Celebrate Lit

Returning to Breakers Review

About the Book

Book:  Returning to Breakers

Author: Rachel Skatvold

Genre: Christian Contemporary Romance

Release date: October 25, 2022

Sometimes God’s “why” comes too late… and just in time.

Tiffany Hill is a master at concealing her emotions. She can’t admit she has her own questions about God—like why He allowed her Marine husband to die in action. A single mom with three children to care for and the general store on Merriweather to run leaves little time for philosophizing. She has more pressing issues to deal with. Like how her dream of running the family business has become a burden.

Is keeping the business afloat even worth the effort anymore?

After high school and an unfortunate falling out with his father, Liam Hadler left Breakers Head, determined never to look back. He failed on that one, and one of many regrets was leaving his high school sweetheart behind to chase an impossible dream.

When his mother calls after his father suffers a stroke, Liam has a tough decision to make. Will he return to a place he’s avoided for sixteen years, and is making amends with his father even possible?

A chance encounter with Tiffany after so many years never occurred to him, but memories of their time together rekindles something he thought he’d lost. What’ll it take to persuade her to give him a second chance?

This Breakers Head novel is Rachel Skatvold’s final book in the Independence Islands Series featuring five islands, six authors, and a boatload of happily-ever-afters.

The Independence Islands Series: beach reads aren’t just for summer anymore.

MY THOUGHTS: Returning to Breakers has a lot of story packed in the pages. Tiffany and Liam both have things they need to work out in their lives, and neither expects their past relationship to be one of those things. WIth adulthood comes perspective, which prompts a renewal in  their friendship as they help each other deal with their current situations. And neither one can deny the attraction that remains between them.

Return to Breakers is another enjoyable story in the Independence Islands Series, and I give it three stars.

More from Rachel

Thank you for following the Returning to Breakers Celebration Tour with Celebrate Lit. Writing in the Independence Islands Series has been an incredible journey and since this is my last book in the series, it’s bitter sweet to say goodbye to these wonderful characters. Although some of them may show up in the sister series, Suamalie Islands…hint, hint, hint!

It has also been a joy to work with Sandra Barela, Chautona Havig, Denise Barela, and everyone else on the Celebrate Lit team. Thank you to them and the wonderful authors I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with. You all have been amazing.

Returning to Breakers features two sets of characters. First, Tiffany and Liam, but also, Kendall and Tyler. Along with Tiff’s story, I do hope you also enjoy the conclusion of the love story between the two main characters from my first book in the series.

In this book, we find Tiffany overwhelmed and ready for a fresh start. As a single mom of three kids and a business owner, she has to wear about every hat imaginable. She has always been an advice giver to everyone else, but now she desperately needs advice herself. Should she sell the family store? It’s one of many questions plaguing her soul. When her friends realize Tiff is floundering, they know she needs a lifeline in the form of some R&R. They arrange for her and the kids to stay at a local resort on Mimosa. Tiffany is reluctant at first but ultimately gives in, quickly realizing how much she needed to rest and reconnect with her kids. However, when an old love from the past returns to the islands, will Tiff’s relaxing vacation be swept away in the tide?

This book is close to my heart because it is dedicated to my oldest sister, Becky. Growing up, she was a great person to go to for spiritual advice, similar to Tiff in this book. She always has wisdom to impart and quotes Bible verses of encouragement even to this day when I need advice.

This book was also inspired by a verse from Philippians 4:6-7, which says, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” When we go through something difficult in life, sometimes it is easy to forget to pray. However, if we leave our worries and anxieties with God, He will take them from us and in return, give us peace. This is one of the lessons Tiff learns during this story and it is also a wonderful reminder for me during trials I have been facing recently.

Blessings.

Why They Call It Falling Review: On Tour with Celebrate Lit

Why They Call It Falling Review

About the Book

Book: Why They Call It Falling

Author: Christina Sinisi

Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance

Release date: June 7, 2022

Formerly the wild child of three sisters, Emma Marano grew up to be a single mom working two jobs, estranged from her mother, and lying to her friends. She’d told everyone that her daughter’s father wanted nothing to do with his child, but in reality, her own inability to deal with her mistakes and shame led to the biggest lie of her life. But her daughter, Haley, is all Emma has in the world, so how can she regret keeping Haley to herself? Emma’s struggling, though, and her life is slowly imploding.

Right after high school, Justin Lee broke up with Emma Marano and joined the Army, leaving her and all her drama behind. Years later, he stumbles upon her and what turns out to be a daughter he never knew he had. Angry and confused, he insists on having a relationship with his daughter, but to do so, he’ll need to rebuild some sort of relationship with Emma, too. As he gets to know his daughter—and Emma again—he soon realizes that his biggest mistake was leaving her all those years ago. What he dismissed as drama turns out to be a serious mental health issue, and Emma needs help. Now, Justin has to decide if he can see past her flaws and forgive her lies, and together, they’ll have to work to reclaim their love and a faith in each other and in God, or they risk losing something precious in the process.

MY THOUGHTS: Depression is often misunderstood, especially in Christian circles. It goes beyond the emotion of sadness to trap one under a weight they don’t fully understand themselves. A person dealing with depression might be able to function only giving hints of the storm inside, or they might not be able to function at all. It’s different for everyone. Emma falls somewhere in the middle, working and raising her child but not the way she desires to. Emma’s story is complicated by the lies she’s told and the return of her daughter’s father, who knows nothing about his child. When Justin finds out about Haley, his surprise gives way to determination. He’s missed enough of his daughter’s life. He won’t miss any more. Working through the difficulties of their past and learning how to parent together, Justin and Emma are awakened to the feelings they thought were doomed to the past. But it’s not all good. There’s a lot of misunderstanding to deal with, forgiveness that needs given, and the secret of her depression looming between them. While I can’t say it’s enjoyable to be part of their ups and downs when Emma tries to hide her problems with depression, their story is one that needs told and it is enjoyable to watch Justin learn to be a father and stand beside Emma and learn to understand the things she deals with.

Why They Call It Falling is a story of forgiveness, healing, and second chances. I give it four stars.

More from Christina

In Why They Call It Falling, the hero discovers he has a daughter he didn’t know existed when he sees his ex-girlfriend in a strawberry patch at Boone Hall Plantation (here in Charleston, South Carolina). In the book, the name of the plantation had to be changed to protect the innocent, but the recipe below doesn’t.

This recipe comes from a cookbook titled, Charleston Receipts Repeats. This book has modern recipes, as well as old-fashioned ones dating back through generations. It’s a perfect accompaniment to my Charleston-based romance.

Strawberry Pie I

1 9-inch pie shell, baked and cooled

1 cup sugar

3 tablespoons cornstarch

1 cup water

Dash salt

1 3-ounce strawberry jello (delete 1 tablespoon)

1 pint strawberries

Whipped cream

In a saucepan, combine sugar, cornstarch, water, and salt.

Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thick and clear.

Add strawberry jello.

Pour half of mixture into pie shell.

Arrange strawberries in jello mixture.

Pour remaining mixture over strawberries.

Refrigerate until congealed.

Serve with whipping cream.

Serves 6 to 8. Chill 3 to 4 hours.

Enjoy, and think of the sweet taste of summer and the enduring love of fall. Second chances are often the most delicious!

Keeping Christmas Vol 1 Review: On Tour with Celebrate Lit

Keeping Christmas Volume 1 Review

About the Book

Authors: Cathe Swanson, Chautona Havig, Olivia Talbott, Kathleen J. Robison, Denise L. Barela, Marguerite Martin Gray, and Naomi Craig.

Genre: Christian Christmas Romance

Release date: October 4, 2022

In castles far and near, long ago and yesterday, find happily-ever-afters wrapped in love and tied with Christmas joy.

The Lights of Castlebourne (by Cathe Swanson and Chautona Havig): He bowled her over at first sight–his dog, that is. Sydney just wanted a chance to do the landscape design at Castlebourne. She never dreamed the owner’s electrician would light up her heart at Christmas.

The Girl From Dalarna (by Olivia Talbott): She’s the most beautiful woman in Sweden, but she doesn’t want to be. A simple life among milk cows is all she desires. Will a scandal upend her plans and ruin her chances for love?

The Cross at Morioka Castle (by Kathleen J. Robison): In the ancient land of shoji screens and tatami mats, Ariko finds the stone ruins of Morioka Castle, and the mysterious cross that holds the secret of a Christian faith extending far deeper than Ariko ever imagined.

The Ghost of Christmas… (by Denise L. Barela): Abbigayl needs to get away for Christmas this year. No family, no questions about why she’s still single, no suggestion about being set up with someone’s friend. What will happen when Neuschwanstein Castle’s past converges with Abbigayl’s future?

Crystal Clear (by Marguerite Martin Gray): Rosalind’s muddied past and foggy future crystalize in Château Chenonceau, a refuge from gossip and more. Watch as the château and Christmas work their magic and break the bonds of propriety, and rejoice as Rosalind experiences the crystal-clear hints of peace, joy, and hope all around her.

The Weary World Rejoices (by Naomi Craig): Behind the elaborate furnishings of Herod the Great’s palace, conspiracy and distrust run rampant. Mysterious visitors from the east challenge everything Amal thinks he knows as palace scribe. Will his quest to uncover the Truth free him from the ornate shackles of palace life, or will he be the next victim of King Herod’s maniacal jealousy?

Grab a mug of something hot and delicious and curl up somewhere comfy. Your literary chariots await to take you on a journey from an early twentieth-century castle overlooking the Mississippi all the way back to the Holy Land at the time of Jesus’ birth. These six novellas, all set in castles real and fictional, celebrate the heart and joy of Christmas.

MY THOUGHTS: Wow! So many great stories all in one book. The stories are each unique in the place and time they take place in. And even the genres are different. Everything from contemporary to Biblical to speculative, you’re sure to find your favorite between the covers. I loved each story, and I think it was the perfect choice to put The Weary World Rejoices at the end of the collection. While I enjoyed every story, having the one that highlights the reason for the season left me with that wonderful Christmas feeling you want after reading a holiday story.

I give this collection a solid 5 stars.

More from Denise

Hello everyone!

I’m excited to share this set of stories with you! All the authors have worked hard to bring you some Christmas joy and magic. We’ve each picked a castle to center our stories around. I mean, Christmas and castles go well together, don’t you think? You’ll get to explore different castles in different time periods while also getting to know all the characters in each story. That’s a lot of new friends to make!

For my story, I jumped on the chance to write about a castle that inspired the castle that always brought me joy growing up (if I’m being honest, it still brings me joy). I’ve always been a huge Disney nerd, and Princess Aurora has always been my favorite Disney princess. Growing up, I was blessed to be able to visit Disneyland for most of my life, and Sleeping Beauty’s castle was my favorite thing (I was so sad when they closed the walk-through part for several years). Even without the attraction part of it, I loved walking into the park and seeing it stand at the end of Main Street. I actually teared up seeing it for the first time after Covid.

What does all this have to do with my castle story? Well, in 1869, King Ludwig II of Bavaria began construction on Neuschwanstein Castle. This castle served as the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. Let me tell you, if you thought Disneyland’s castle was beautiful, it’s got nothing on Neuschwanstein. If I were to pick a castle to live in, it’d be this one.

Setting aside the Disney connection, I was even more intrigued when I learned more about the king who commissioned it. The king was not very popular towards the end of his reign, and the day after he was sent to Berg Castle, he and a doctor were found dead in Lake Starnberg. The weird part? They ruled it a drowning, but there was no water in their lungs and clear signs of foul play.

Oh, but that’s not the only interesting fact this castle houses. This castle became a hiding place for some of the art the Nazi’s stole during World War II. Part of me wonders if any pieces are still hidden there. The Monuments Men group actually cataloged art found there, and it’s been preserved. Here’s a fun articlefrom The Met all about it!

I hope you enjoyed learning about the castle that inspired my story!

All I Want for Christmas Review: On Tour with Celebrate Lit

All I Want for Christmas Review

All I Want for Christmas review for Celebrate Lit

All I Want for Christmas review for Celebrate Lit

About the Book

Book: All I Want for Christmas

Author: Fay Lamb

Genre: Christian Fiction

Release date: November 21, 2021

A wedding headed for disaster,

A crime syndicate bent on destruction,

And a bunch of hungry alligators.

Knee deep in preparation for her best friend’s Christmas wedding, Abigail Brewster reels when her estranged younger sister returns to Mullet Harbor. She brings secrets, intrigue, and trouble along with her—a crime syndicate set on goals that would destroy the harbor. And Abigail is in the middle of their scheme.

Remy Arneaux doesn’t understand the reason for Susan Brewster’s return, and maybe that’s due to the brain fog from his concussion. But he does know enough not to trust her and not to let her near Abigail. The self-centered woman would only hurt her . . . again. Abigail has had enough pain, even from him. Still, he made a promise to escort someone else to the wedding. And with the promise is a secret that begins to rip his relationship with Abigail apart.

According to Mayor Herb’s edict, nothing is allowed to mar this occasion for his only granddaughter. Not heartbreak, not tirades from a spoiled young woman, and not threats from organized crime.

But what about their attempts to make good on their threats . . .

MY THOUGHTS: This is not your typical Christmas love story! It may take place around the holiday and even involve a Christmas wedding, but All I Want For Christmas has so much more than what’s expected. I mean, one of the prominent characters is an alligator. You don’t see that every day. With twists and turns to keep readers guessing, this story will keep your interest whether you’re there for the love, the holiday, or the danger and suspense.

I give this book four stars.

About the Author

Fay Lamb is the only daughter of a rebel genius father and a hard-working, tow-the-line mom. She is not only a fifth-generation Floridian, she has lived her life in Titusville, where her grandmother was born in 1899.

Since an early age, storytelling has been Fay’s greatest desire. She seeks to create memorable characters that touch her readers’ hearts. She says of her writing, “If I can’t laugh or cry at the words written on the pages of my manuscript, the story is not ready for the reader.” Fay writes in various genres, including romance, romantic suspense, and contemporary fiction.

More from Fay

Writing is supposed to be fun, right? Well, for a while, writing was the last thing I wanted to do. And when you have two series contracted and many other books waiting in line to be written, that’s a big problem.

I’m sure that I’m not the only person on the face of this earth who recently placed fun in a jar and hid it away for at least a week, maybe a month, maybe even a year. Heck, some of us may have fun still hidden away.

I truly thought I’d lost my sense of humor. And then I sat down to be purposeful in my writing. Abigail tiptoed onto the page (literally), and then the quirky denizens of Mullet Harbor worked their magic and the story unfolded before me. Abigail and her hero, Remy, may have had some difficulties in life, but for me, I had the time of my life.

When I finished writing All I Want for Christmas, I sat back and I marveled that I had not lost that sense of humor, especially not in my writing. I recalled that in all my writing life, when things were bleakest, my writing brought a smile, and I have always wanted it to bring a smile to others.

Mission accomplished. Humor has been removed from the hiding place and firmly installed back into the funny bone, and my prayer is that the readers will allow Mullet Harbor to bring a little humor—and suspense—to their lives.

Rachel Kelly Character Interview: Main Character Monday

Rachel Kelly Character InterviewI’m so excited to have you join me for a character interview with Rachel Kelly on Main Character Monday. And, no. I haven’t lost track of my days of the week. The interview didn’t go up on Monday, and I couldn’t make you wait another week to meet Rachel. Isn’t the picture of her gorgeous? Rachel is the main character from Susan G Mathis’s latest book, Rachel’s Reunion

Welcome Rachel. Why don’t you tell us a little about yourself.

I’ve worked in the Thousand Islands for several years now. For the past two years, I served the Mr. and Mrs. Charles Emery in Calumet Castle on Calumet Island (you can read more about that in Susan’s novel, Peyton’s Promise, about my best friend). But now, I serve the most elite patrons at the famed New Frontenac Hotel on Round Island.

Tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?

I grew up in Clayton, NY, in the heart of the Thousand Islands. The 1,864 islands are shared almost equally between New York state and Ontario, Canada. It’s where Lake Ontario narrows and becomes the St. Lawrence River. Here the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River intersect to become the world’s largest inland navigation system. Huge freighters pass by tiny islands along the main channel and share the waterway with all kinds of boats including kayaks and canoes!

After George M. Pullman invited President Ulysses S. Grant to visit his small island during the 1872 reelection campaign, the Thousand Islands became a national event. The press touted the Thousand Islands as THE place to summer for the rich and famous and common man alike. In so doing—and thanks to excited journalists—he launched The Thousand Islands season of the rich and famous buying islands and lots along the mainland and building castles, mansions, and magnificent summer homes. The New Frontenac Hotel on Round Island, where I work, is one of them.

That sounds amazing and beautiful. Now, you said you work for one of these resort hotels. Can you tell us more about that?

The New Frontenac Hotel graces Round Island on the St. Lawrence River. It was one of the grandest hotel resorts in the area. New York City tycoon Charles G. Emery built it, and now I get to stay and work in the hotel’s Annex, where the most elite guests enjoy elegant suites. So far, I’ve met William Howard Taft, Secretary of War in Teddy Roosevelt’s Administration, the Maharaja and Maharani of Baroda, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver and Alva Belmont, the Russian Prince and Princess Engalitcheff, and a famous photographer, Chester Armstrong. It’s simply magical.

Wow! I’ve never met one famous person. I can’t imagine being surrounded by so many important and known people. I heard you also got involved with that famous photographer. What was that like?

Goodness! Having my picture taken by a famous photographer was simply thrilling, and he even gave me a photograph for my mother. On the other hand, it wasn’t all it cracked up to be, for the man turned into a rogue.

When you started working at the New Frontenac Hotel, you reconnected with your old flame, Mitch. How’d did that go?

I couldn’t believe my eyes when Mitch appeared on the dock. Two years earlier, he had hurt me terribly, so we had lots of ups and downs before I finally chose to forgive him and embrace his friendship—but you’ll have to read my story to find out if our relationship grew beyond friendship.

Forgiving someone who hurt you isn’t easy. How did that happen?

Mitch had apologized over and over for hurting me, explaining why he made the choices he did. I still couldn’t forgive him. One day, he quoted Psalm 147 that says, ‘He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names’.

Then he said, “If He can put the infinite stars into orbit and name them, He can heal your precious heart and help you forgive my blunders. Please entrust your heart to the Lord. I know He can heal your broken heart. If you allow Him.”

And guess what? He did!

That’s great, Rachel. If you could leave readers with one message, what would it be?

All nine of Susan’s stories have hope as the central theme. Hope for a better future. Hope for love. Hope for healing. I want to give readers hope that God can heal a broken heart and help you forgive those who hurt you. He did that for me.

We’re so happy for you, Rachel. Now, let’s turn a corner and let me ask you a few fun, quick question.

What three things would we find if we looked under your bed?

That’s a funny question. Under my bed you’d find piles of books. I love to read!

What is your favorite hobby? Reading, of course.

Please describe yourself with three words. Joyful, friendly, and creative.

Your secret interest? The suffrage movement.

Your favorite famous guest? Mrs. Alva Belmont who’s a suffrage activist and took time to tell me about the movement.

Readers, don’t say good-bye just yet. Keep reading for more information on Rachel’s Reunion, Susan’s great new release and to find out more about Susan and where you can find her on social media and get your own copy of her book.

About Rachel’s Reunion:

Summer 1904

Rachel Kelly serves the most elite patrons at the famed New Frontenac Hotel on Round Island. Mitch O’Keefe returns to claim his bride but finds it more difficult than he thought. Returning to work at the very place he hated, he becomes captain of a New Frontenac Hotel touring yacht, just to be near Rachel. Slowing Down: Wednesday in the Word

Slowing DownDo you ever feel like slowing down for a moment is needed but impossible? This spring and summer were like that for me, and I’m still trying to recover. My list from April to September was by far the craziest I’ve ever experienced.

Two writing conferences (one to attend and one to help organize), a new church for my husband to pastor, a book to release, two books to finish and turn in to my publisher within two weeks of each other, one camp to help at, one youth camp to direct, a VBS to direct, edits to complete on a novella, a back-to-school tea party to organize,a long work weekend at the camp, and helping my mom plan her first book launch party filled my calendar with things to do. And my list didn’t take into account sick days (Thank you, covid), watching my grandson, doing any housework, keeping up with my blog (and newsletters and social media) or spending time with my family.

All of things provided blessings in my life. Well, maybe not covid. But all the others did. They all gave opportunities for growth, fellowship, and ministry. They offered me times to connect with those who needed my encouragement and allowed me to find the encouragement I needed through others. I’m so glad God gave me the opportunity for each endeavor.

But, I’ll be completely open here. My energy is depleted. My mind is mush. And my emotions are all over the place. Due to the overloaded schedule I kept, especially June through August, even my regular level of activity is almost too much at the moment.

Writing and all it encompasses (social media, blogs, reviews, podcasts, virtual assistant tasks), needs at home, and church/ministry demands all vie for time and energy. Two commodities lacking in my life since this summer’s rush.

In times like these, I’ve discovered the strangest paradox. When my schedule pushes me the most, I need to slow down. Even with tasks filling each line of my to-do list, I accomplish more when I refuse to rush forward and instead give my attention to God.

Scripture tells us to be still before God and seek Him first. It encourages committing our plans and ways to Him. The Bible warns against worrying about the future and the tasks we must accomplish.

For me, this means taking time for study, prayer, praise, and reflection. I want to commit my plans and goals to Him. Though I try, I know, many times,  my own ideas are less than stellar. I’m not perfect at it. In fact, I don’t think I’m really that good at it or consistent. But I want to be. I desire more of God and less of me. More peace and less worry. And I definitely want more calm in my mind and less of the frantic pace I tend to adopt.

I want to remember and live out Proverbs 16:1-3. “The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD. All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the spirit. Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established.”

If I allow God to establish my plans, I know they won’t be too little or too much. They will be perfect for me. But to do this, slowing down and committing my work (all of it from writing to housework to writing reviews) to Him and listening for Him to tell me where my steps should go is essential.

How does slowing down and committing your path to God help you?

Main Character Monday Interview: Isaac Campbell

I’m so happy you’re here for another Main Character Monday as I interview Isaac Campbell from A Sweet Dream Come True by Sarah Anne Crouch. Isaac’s story is part of the Love in Any Season novella collection.

Welcome Isaac. Let’s start this off with a little more about you. What do we need to know?

I’m an ice cream man! Several months ago, I opened an ice cream shop in Bestwood, Tennessee. Before that, I lived in Nashville most of my life. My parents still live there, and my older sister Faith lives in Knoxville. That’s probably too much information, haha. Sorry!

Is there something readers might be surprised to learn about you?

I actually used to be an accountant, but I can make some really delicious ice cream.

Accountant to ice cream. That’s a big jump. What is your favorite book of the Old Testament?

I’ve been studying Joshua recently and found it really spoke to me. I just hope I can be as brave as Joshua some day.

Is there a book of the Bible you have trouble getting through?

I struggle with the genealogies, but James can hit a little too close to home sometimes, you know?

I think the genealogy struggle is a common one! I love it and not at the same time when a book hits close to home. If you could meet anyone from scripture, excluding Jesus, who would it be?

Peter. He must have some really amazing stories.

That would be a great conversation, I’m sure. Jesus had twelve disciples. Which one are you most like?

Probably Matthew, since I used to work with taxes, haha. But I wonder if he felt like an outsider sometimes. Maybe he struggled to fit in with the other disciples. I can sympathize with that.

I’ve never thought about him that way. Great insight. Jesus says we are to be His light in the world. What does this mean to you?

I try every day to give people a little joy. Ice cream can bring a smile to anyone’s face. And if I can provide that joy with the work I do and the way I treat people, I think I’m showing others the light of Christ.

If you could leave readers with one message, what would it be?

Don’t be afraid! Just like Joshua, we need to have courage and trust God to take care of us when we follow His commands.

Now, it’s time for some fun and rapid fire questions before we learn more about Sarah and where to find more about your story. If you could have a superpower, what one would you choose?

Super Strength. Or flight. Basically, I’d want to be Superman.

If offered the opportunity would you choose to travel in space?

Yes! Wouldn’t that be so amazing? Humbling and exciting all at the same time.

Dark or Milk Chocolate?

Milk Chocolate, but I’ve eaten some absolutely delicious dark chocolate truffles.

Roses or Daisies?

Roses, I guess. You could make a nice rose-flavored ice cream for Valentine’s Day. Maybe I should do that! Thanks for the idea. =)

Salad or Soup?

Soup for sure. Chili or Loaded Baked Potato Soup. Mmmm, now I’m hungry.

One final question. If you could describe Sarah Anne Crouch in three words, what would they be?

Loves Ice Cream (Not as much as I do, but almost.)

Thank you for a great interview, Isaac. And I want to thank Sarah Anne Crouch for allowing you to be a guest for this Main Character Monday interview. Now for a little more about Sarah.

Solomon’s Porch – What I’m Reading

Solomon's PorchI’d heard good things about Solomon’s Porch, the debut novel from Janet Morris Grimes. Various posts praising the work kept popping up in my social media feeds. The novel was a finalist in various awards I keep track of. With all the positive buzz, I moved it to the top of my TBR list. And I stayed up way too late finishing it!

Solomon’s Porch is unique in its concept and excellent in its delivery. It’s uplifting and heart-string tugging at the same time. The story is a beautiful reminder that all our stories weave together in ways we may never know. That being the case, being the hands and feet of Jesus to those around us takes on even more importance. And it’s not even the big things. Something as simple as a glass of lemonade and a little bit of time on the front porch can have a huge impact.

There are many layers to the story of Solomon’s Porch, and they all come together to create a beautiful story that inspires me to want to go sit on my front porch and share God’s love with those around me through simply being with them.

I give this book five stars, and I can’t wait to see what Janet Morris Grimes writes next!

Keeping Track – Wednesday in the Word

Keeping TrackKeeping track of everything we have to do should be easy. We have calendars on our phones, which we program to send us alarms and take them everywhere we go. We have planners in our bags and calendars on the wall. There are scheduling apps, countdown apps, and progress tracking apps. To-do lists fill notebooks, and shopping lists hang on our refrigerators. With all of these wonderful tools at our disposal, it should be simple. But it’s not.

At least, it’s not for me. I realize there are probably people out there who thrive with all the virtual and physical reminders of what needs accomplished in the day. Don’t get me wrong. I love being organized. But what seems to work for everyone else only partially works for me. I’m simply not wired to handle alarms going off. Of course, that would mean I had to set them in the first place. If a system requires multiple steps or keeping a phone/computer in my possession, it won’t work for me for long.

I tend to be hands-on. Old-school. I like to write out a list of things to accomplish each day. Recently, because I’ve acquired many different areas of life that need my attention, I’ve created a printable document that separates my tasks into their categories. I’ve got mini-lists for housework, writing, marketing, ministry, podcasting, and my virtual assistant work. It’s not because each one has to have their own space. It’s so when I’m thinking through what I need to do each day, I remember to consider the needs in each section of my life.

A hand-written list is the best I can do, and I’m not consistent or proficient at using that. Tasks get out of order or slip through the cracks. Maybe I set aside a job on my list for another day in favor of more pressing matters. And thenI put it off again and again and again. Soon, falls off my list, and I’m not sure how. Then I scramble completing today what I should have finished a week ago.

I’m not great at keeping track of my to-do list, but I try. And in that trying, I’ve noticed something. When I take to heart Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you”, my day goes better. When I sit quietly with God in His word and prayer to start my day, it calms my racing thoughts.

By the time I finish my quiet time, I make my to-do list with fewer frantic or jumbled thoughts. They’re more ordered. I can think through what I need to do without as much frustration and forgetting. Starting with God not only gives me proper perspective, it helps me keep track of all I have to do in the day and get to those tasks with greater ease and success.

Keeping God first helps me in keeping track of all I have to do. What tricks have you found to help you do the same?

Main Character Monday Interview: Beth Norton

Main Character Monday InterviewWelcome back to another Main Character Monday Interview. Today’s guest is from The Missing Piece a novella by Amy R. Anguish included in the Love in Any Season novella collection which releases tomorrow, September 27, 2022.  Before we get to the interview, I want to encourage readers to be sure to check out the entire post. I’ve included information on a great online Scavenger Hunt you can participate in while celebrating this collection with the authors.

Now, on to our interview. Welcome, Beth Norton! Tell me a little about yourself?

I’m from Sassafras, AR and work with my mom at The Missing Piece, a little quilt shop she started with her friend Laura. I love to sew so this is perfect for me.

Tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?

I don’t like watermelon. This may not seem like a big thing to you, but our town is known for its Watermelon Festival, so it’s a pretty big deal to me.

I can see why that could be problematic. What is your favorite Bible verse and why?

Ephesians 2:10, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” I love the idea that God created us, just like I create quilts and other sewn items. I know the love and time and effort that goes into creating something, so this makes me feel extra special that He made me just the way I am.

That’s a great visual. Thank you for sharing it. Is there a person from the Bible that you relate to most?

Tabitha, maybe? She sewed to take care of others, just like Mama Laura did.

The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Is there one of these characteristics you find is easier to show than the others?

I’d like to think I’m pretty good at most of them, but I know that’s not true. Maybe joy? Or kindness? That’s a really hard question.

*Is there one that is more challenging than the others? Ugh. Um. Let’s go with patience. Is that too standard of an answer? I’m not always great at self-control, either.

If you could give one message to those reading this interview, what would you tell them?

Be super careful when sewing because someone could startle you and your thumb hurts a lot when it goes under the needle. Just trust me on this one.

Before we let you go for the day, I’d like to ask you some just for fun and rapid fire questions. First one. If you could visit just one place your entire life, where would you go?

Hawaii. Have you seen their quilts? They’re amazing. Not to mention, the islands sound nice, too.

I had no idea quilting in Hawaii was a thing. While the location might be one I hear a lot, your reasoning is completely unique. If you could choose one talent you don’t already have, what talent would you choose?

Being more organized. And don’t say it’s not a talent, because it totally is.

I would never argue that point. Some people just don’t think in ways that lead to organization. Now on to rapid fire questions.

Dark or Milk Chocolate? Milk

Beach or Mountains? Beach, obviously

Sweet Tea or Lemonade? Sweet Tea

And one final question. If you had only three words to describe Amy Anguish, what would they be? Relentless, Know-it-all, surprising

I want to thank Beth Norton for visiting with us today and Amy for allowing her to be here. Keep reading to find out more about The Missing Piece, Amy R. Anguish, and the Love in Any Season novella collection. Plus, stay tuned for more on the Love in Any Season Social Media Scavenger Hunt.

More About Amy and How to Connect with Her

Amy R Anguish grew up a preacher’s kid, and in spite of having lived in seven different states that are all south of the Mason Dixon line, she is not a football fan. Currently, she resides in Tennessee with her husband, daughter, and son, and usually a bossy cat or two. Amy has an English degree from Freed-Hardeman University that she intends to use to glorify God, and she wants her stories to show that while Christians face real struggles, it can still work out for good.

More About The Missing Piece

Tommy England comes back to Sassafras, AR after being gone seven years and can’t understand why childhood best friend, Beth Norton, is upset with him. As they work to save their quilt shop, prepare for the watermelon festival, and complete an unfinished quilt, their friendship regrows. Each stitch taken brings them closer to more than just a beautiful blanket—maybe even to finding their missing piece.
