Main Character Monday: Interview with Laurelin Moore

On today’s Main Character Monday, I have the pleasure of an interview with Laurelin Moore. I read The Whisperer’s Wish, Laurelin’s story by Janilise Lloyd and shared my review of it a week ago. If you haven’t read that review, you can find it here: My Review of The Whisperer’s Wish

But before you do that, keep reading to find out a little more about Laurelin. I interviewed her this week and enjoyed learning more about her. I know you’re going to as well.

Welcome, Laurelin. Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m just an average girl from Lingua, one of the five provinces of Ausland. All my life, I’ve been hiding a secret magical ability. Magic is common where I’m from, but my specific power is not. I’m a pygsmy whisperer, which means I can speak with and control magical creatures called pygsmies. Pygsmies are important because they carry elixir in their wings. This elixir can heal illnesses or broken bones, but it can’t cure biological conditions, like my brother’s cancer. I’ve decided now is the time to let the world know what I can do because it’s my only chance to compete in the Pentax and win a wish to save my brother’s life.

Wow! That’s pretty amazing. You have been given a gift not everyone receives. Is this a blessing or a curse?

It’s both. I’m grateful I can whisper because it’s kept my brother alive for a few years now. While the elixir I collect from pygsmies can’t cure his cancer completely, it does extend his time. But I know that when other people know what I can do, my life will never be the same. They’ll always be after me for elixir, and I don’t know how to choose who gets it and who doesn’t. It’s too much pressure to have to choose.

That’s a tough dilemma for anyone. And you’re so young to carry that kind of weight. What guides you in how you use this gift?

My family is most important to me. I’m the only gifted person in my family, so I feel a sense of responsibility to help care and provide for them. If their needs are met, I try to find others who can benefit from my magic. I want to help others, it’s just hard to know how when there are so many people with so many needs.

I can only imagine. You’re right. There are so many problems in the world. If you could change one thing in the world around you, what would it be?

Easy. I’d find a cure for cancer. I want that more than anything.

I don’t think anyone would argue with that. Many people in our world work every day to find a cure. It’s a challenge they haven’t been able to totally meet yet, but still, they keep going. Are you a person who naturally looks for challenges to conquer? If not, what might push you to accept a challenging situation?

I like to challenge myself, but in inconspicuous ways. I don’t like to be in the spotlight. Trying to get into the Pentax is basically the opposite of that. It’s very challenging and very much in the spotlight. But a chance to save Pippin is worth it. So I guess the thing that would push me to accept a challenge like that would be family and those I truly care about.

We’ve talked a bit about the challenges that come with your gift. But it can’t all be bad. What is your favorite part of the gift you’ve been given?

Aside from the help it’s given Pippin, my favorite thing is being with the pygsmies. They’re so gentle, selfless, and fun. I wish humans were more like them.

We’ve talked about your special gifting, but there are many gifts every person can experience. What would you list as your everyday gifts?

I don’t know if I have any gifts like that. My family members all have a lot of great characteristics. It feels like I got the magic gift and the regular stuff skipped over me. My dad is creative and protective. Pippin is smart and resilient. My mom is gentle and patient. If I have to choose something about me, I guess I’m pretty stubborn which can equal determination, and that helps me get what I want even when things are hard.

I’d say determination is a gift. Nothing gets done if we aren’t determined to see it accomplished. Before we finish the interview, I’d like to ask you some quick questions. Just for fun. Nothing hard.

Rapid Fire Questions:

Indoors or outside? Outside, all the time.

City or country? Country

Reading or exploring? Exploring

Sweet or sour? Sweet

Soup or salad? Soup

What three words would you, Laurelin, use to describe Janilise Lloyd?

Bossy, persistent, and creative

I want to thank you, readers, for joining me for this Main Character Monday Interview with Laurelin Moore. And thank you Laurelin and Janilise for allowing me to spend this time with you. Readers, I know after reading this interview with Laurelin and my review of The Whisperer’s Wish, you’re probably excited to get a copy of the book for yourself. You can do that here.

Under an Indigo Moon Review: On Tour with Celebrate Lit

Under an Indigo Moon Review

About the Book

Book: Under an Indigo Moon

Author: JL Crosswhite

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Release date: December 28, 2022

It was supposed to be a fresh start for her…

…He’d never expected to find love again.

Will they find a second chance or will small-town secrets spell disaster?

Former big-city architect and single mom, Carissa Carver, found just enough to hope to begin a new life with her boys in Holcomb Springs. She dropped all her savings into a vacant Victorian in an online auction, hoping to flip it and build a better life.

However, it didn’t take long to learn nothing was as promised, including a chocolate Lab that came with the house, who adopted her son with Asperger’s. Could her boys handle being uprooted one more time?

But when things go missing, her house is vandalized, and she finds human bones in the basement, she wonders what she’s really gotten them into. Is this one more bad decision or something truly dangerous?

Deputy Jonas McCann came to Holcomb Springs to heal after the death of his wife and daughter. The last thing he needs is matchmaking by the meddling librarian, even if Carissa and her boys stir something long dormant in his heart.

As more strange things happen, he is drawn further into his desire to protect her and the boys he’s come to have a heart for. Can he solve the mystery before they get hurt? Does it have anything to do with the missing teenager? Or are those just ghost stories and small-town rumors? Especially the ones about the indigo blue moon.

Author JL Crosswhite will have you on the edge of your seat, unable to turn pages fast enough.

MY UNDER AN INDIGO MOON REVIEW: Romantic suspense is not my typical genre of choice. But this book cover and the back cover copy intrigued me. The story continued to intrigue me all the way through.

It’s all about new beginnings for the heroine, Carissa, and her boys. A move to a new place is their last hope to regain control of their lives. Carissa is a caring and patient mother even though she’s carrying the weight of childrearing on her own.

I loved Deputy Jonas McCann. Despite his personal hurt, he’s great with Carissa’s sons and Carissa herself. And when Carissa finds herself and her sons in trouble due to an unsolved mystery surrounding their new home, Jonas takes on the role of protector.

I enjoyed this story and give it four stars.

More from JL Crosswhite

It may surprise you, but I actually started writing Under an Indigo Moon about fourteen years ago (my books can germinate for a long time!). It started out as a women’s fiction book called Under the Blueberry Sky. It even finaled in the Frasier contest for first chapters in 2011.

But as I began planning the Holcomb Springs series, I knew I wanted to tell Carissa and Jonas’s story. While there are parts of me in all of my characters, Carissa has a unique place in my heart as the mom of a special needs kid. Her six-year-old son, Jayden, is based a lot on my experiences with my son who’s on the autism spectrum.

Because I had written much of the early part of the book a long time ago when I was closer to those long and difficult days, re-reading and writing those scenes took me back. My son is a young adult now, and I was amazed at how much I had forgotten about the day-to-day challenges of living with someone who sees the world so differently. And now I can look back and see how far he has come.

Jonas McCann was a bit of a mystery to me. Because my original envisioning of this book was as women’s fiction, there wasn’t a romance thread. So I had to create one. I’m fortunate to have law enforcement officers in my family to draw from. But as I got to know Jonas, he became as beloved to me as all of my characters (They feel like my children; I can’t pick a favorite!).

One of the highest compliments I received was from a book-coaching client (my day job) who read Beneath a Star-Lit Sky, the first book in the Holcomb Springs series. Her husband is a small-town sheriff, and she felt I really captured the role. That meant a lot to me. Even though I write fiction, I want my characters to feel like real people with real problems and challenges.

Under an Indigo Moon takes place in a fictional world—Holcomb Springs—that already has a lot of threads and tie ins. It’s book 2 in the Holcomb Springs Small Town Romantic Suspense series, but it ties in with the two previous series I’ve written—Hometown Heroes and In the Shadow. I don’t know about you, but I love seeing characters from previous books pop up again in later books.

You can certainly enjoy the book without knowing about all the “Easter eggs” hidden inside, but isn’t it more fun to be in on the jokes? So make sure you grab Claire and Alex’s story in Inn at Cherry Blossom Lane (grab it here for free) and the short story that introduces us to the Holcomb Springs group in “An Evening to Remember” (grab it here). There are clues in the story that play out in the book.

I hope you enjoy Jonas and Carissa’s journey as much as I enjoyed writing it—a story of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.

The Last Chance Cowboy Review: On Tour with Celebrate Lit

The Last Chance Cowboy Review

About the Book

Book: The Last Chance Cowboy

Author: Jody Hedlund

Genre: Historical Romance

Release date: February 14, 2023

With danger drawing ever closer, their only hope of saving their futures lies in each other.

As a midwife, Catherine Remington is successful in bringing new life into the world, but she’s failed one too many times in finding true love. When she’s accused of a murder she didn’t commit, she’s forced to flee to Colorado to honor a patient’s dying wish by delivering a newborn infant to his father.

The repentant prodigal Dylan McQuaid is finally back in Fairplay. As sheriff, he’s doing his best to prove to the town he’s a changed man and worthy of their trust. When a woman shows up with an infant son he didn’t know he had, Dylan is left with only complicated choices on what to do next.

Having grown attached to Dylan’s son, Catherine doesn’t want to part ways with the infant, but what she doesn’t bargain for is how easily she’ll fall for the charming sheriff, or how quickly the past will catch up with her and put their love and lives in danger.

MY THE LAST CHANCE COWBOY REVIEW:This, I believe, was my first book by this author. It won’t be the last. I was instantly drawn to the cover, and it had a great deal to do with me picking this book to read.

Though I did feel the main plot issue was one that could have been corrected with a quick and easy conversation early on, that in no way interfered with my enjoyment of the story. In fact, I stayed up until the early morning hours finishing the story in one sitting because I didn’t want to put it down.

I loved the characters too. Catherine Remmington wants only the best for those she loves and will do anything to protect them. This is a noble way of thinking but it does lead to some trouble for her and others. Dylan McQuiad is the perfect old west hero. Of course, he’s not perfect though. A reformed bad boy who still deals with the effects of his past choices, Dylan makes you feel for him.

I give The Last Chance Cowboy a solid four stars.

About the Author

Jody Hedlund (www.jodyhedlund.com) is the bestselling author of over 30 historical novels for both adults and teens and is the winner of numerous awards, including the Christy, Carol, and Christian Book Awards. Jody lives in Michigan with her husband, busy family, and five spoiled cats.

More from Jody

What drew you to Colorado as a setting for your latest historical romance series?

When I was a child, I lived up in the high country in Granby in Middle Park. Then my husband and I lived in Denver for a few years while he went to grad school. So in some ways, Colorado feels like home.

I was also drawn to writing about Colorado because of the ruggedness of the setting, especially in the 1800’s. It was difficult for those first settlers to survive in such a harsh and unforgiving place, especially without all the modern conveniences we’re used to.

Not only that, but I’m truly astounded by the beauty and majesty of the West. There’s nothing quite as stunning as the Rocky Mountains!

Why do you think readers always enjoy cowboy heroes?

I actually asked that question of readers and here are a couple of answers I received:

One reader said: I like their endurance and steadfastness. Their innate ability to deal with animals and athleticism to work in an outdoor environment that is many times unforgiving.

Another reader said: Cowboys protect each other, provide for their animals, help neighbors, and celebrate life. No matter how hard it is. They find happiness in the simple things of life. Determination, grit, are words to describe them. And love … oh yes how fiercely they love and protect their one and only.

I think the love of cowboys has to do with their reputation for their integrity and hard work ethic. Of course it doesn’t hurt that we think of most cowboys as hunks. Right

Are readers always promised a “happily ever after” in your novels? Why or why not?

As an avid reader of romance myself, I not only expect a HEA, it’s what I love! Since, I’m writing the books I would love to read, I wouldn’t ever be able to write anything but a HEA! I’m of the opinion that there are too many bittersweet and mediocre endings in real life. So with fiction, I want a book to inspire me and give me courage that I can be a better person. I hope readers feel the same with my novels!

When did you first begin writing stories?

I’m pretty sure I was born with a pen in one hand and a notebook in the other. Since my earliest days, I loved making up stories and writing them down. The passion followed me into adulthood. And after many twists and turns along the path, I’ve finally been able to channel that passion into a full time writing career.

What was the name of your first book?

The Preacher’s Bride was my first published book.

How did you get into the Christian/historical fiction genre?

I love reading historicals, so naturally that’s what I’m drawn to write. I’m fascinated with all of the things that happen in other times and places that seem so foreign to us now. I really appreciate when historical facts are woven into books seamlessly so that I’m learning but don’t really realize I am. And I hope that I can do that in my books too.

Who was your favorite author when you were younger?

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery was one of my favorites as a child because it played a role in developing my creativity as a writer. (Followed closely by A Little Princess and Little Women because they also featured strong, creative girls.)

How would you describe your writing style in three words?

Sweet, clean, with sizzle

How many books have you published so far?

Over 40

Do you have any habits or rituals as a writer?

When I’m in first draft mode, I give myself a daily word count six days a week, and then I make myself write until I hit my goal even if that means I have to write all day and into the evening (most days that doesn’t happen though, thankfully). I’m pretty tough on myself about making my daily goals!

What habits would you encourage others to take up to be a more productive writer?

I believe every writer should set realistic goals for whatever life season they’re in. For example, when my kids were younger and I was in the thick of homeschooling, I set my daily word count goal at 500 words a day. That was realistic for me at that stage. I made myself write that amount every day so that I built good habits of self-discipline and focus.

What do you snack on or drink while writing?

Coffee all the way! Black and lots of it!

How do you overcome writer’s block? Because of my stringent daily word count goal (and not allowing myself to veer from it), I push through writer’s block by simply writing whatever comes to mind, even if it’s not particularly inspiring.

Are you an “edit-as-you-go” writer or do you wait until the very end before you do any editing?

I start my writing day by re-reading a portion of what I wrote the previous day. I edit that lightly before moving on. But mostly I wait until the end to turn on my internal editor.

What would you say is the most common mistake new writers make?

It’s normal and natural to get excited about finishing a first book. But I’ve seen many writers eager to publish (and even rush into publishing) that first book. It’s almost always wise to wait to seek publication (or indie publish) until you have completed several books, taken classes, read writing craft books, and had critique partners.

How can readers connect with you?

To stay up to date, I invite readers to join my Facebook Reader Room where I post the most relevant book news and interact with readers. Or readers can visit my website at jodyhedlund.com

The Whisperer’s Wish Review

The Whisperers Wish ReviewAre you a fan of the Hunger Games series? Do you enjoy fantasy worlds and creatures?

I had the opportunity to join the launch team for The Whisperer’s Wish by Janilise Lloyd. I don’t often join teams like this since I’m usually busy with book tour reviews and my own writing. But I loved the premise of this one, and the cover was absolutely gorgeous. I HAD to say yes to being part of the group. Now, after reading it, I’m glad I did.

The author did an amazing job of creating a fantasy world readers can still relate to. I love the pygsmies. They’re such fun creatures, and the way they’re described, you want them to exist. The author also did a great job showing real emotions and reactions of people dealing with terminal illnesses. It may be a fantasy world, but every reader can relate to the main character’s feelings, the feelings of her parents, and the feelings of her brother.

Speaking of the characters, the author created wonderful ones readers will enjoy and want to cheer on. And there’s plenty of action to keep you turning pages.

Whether you have a teen/YA reader in your home or simply enjoy the fantasy genre, I recommend ordering The Whisperer’s Wish. You won’t be disappointed. I give The Whisperer’s Wish a solid four stars.

MORE ABOUT THE BOOK:

For sixteen years, Laurelin Moore has been keeping a secret. She is a whisperer, and she knows that to reveal her gift now is a dangerous risk. Past whisperers have been exploited for their power. But Ausland’s queen is dead and acknowledging her magic is her only chance at becoming a Rook in the Pentax—a competition that will decide the kingdom’s next ruler.

Laurelin isn’t in it for the crown, though. She’s after the wish that will be granted to the victor. A wish that would save her dying brother, Pippin. But there are dangerous undercurrents to the competition, and Laurelin finds herself at the center of it. She begins to search for answers and discovers a secret with the potential to shatter the entire kingdom.

Meet the Author Monday: Susan Page Davis

Meet the Author Monday: Susan Page DavisWelcome to this week’s Meet the Author Monday interview with our guest, Susan Page Davis. Susan has written over a hundred books, from historicals to mysteries, and several are award winners. But we want to know more about Susan that you can find in a bio. So, let’s begin. Welcome, Susan. Why don’t we start off with something easy. Tell us a bit about yourself.

I was born and spent most of my life in the state of Maine. I went to college just outside New York City, which was a major shock, but it stretched my experience. After I got married, I moved to Oregon, then back to Maine, and later to Kentucky. Each time I moved, I tried to noticed all the things that were different in my new environment. God has blessed me in allowing me to write more than 100 novels. My husband, a retired news editor, and I are the parents of six grown children and grandparents of eleven.

As someone who has lived in the same place all my life, I find all your moves a little daunting. Though I would like to visit some of those places. Let’s talk a bit about your life as a writer. Do you have any writing routines or habits you follow for a productive writing day?

Yes, I’m usually at my desk by 7:30 in the morning, and I work most of the morning at writing and writing-related tasks. These might include editing, promotions, planning, research, interviews, and so on. If I haven’t finished the tasks I’ve assigned myself for that day, I continue in the afternoon. I’m usually done work for the day by three or so.

Susan Page DavisYou’ve got more self-discipline than me! You’ve got a new book, Scream Blue Murder, releasing soon. What prompted this particular story?

In December 2021, a string of tornadoes ripped through our area. Having grown up in New England, I had never seen tornado damage firsthand, and it was eye-opening. Since I’m writing a series of mysteries set in western Kentucky, I decided to put a tornado in my next book, and here it is. Scream Blue Murder. It releases March 7.

Tornado damage can be devastating, but you’ve got me wondering what part the tornado plays in your mystery. Does it help solve the mystery or create more of one? No. That isn’t for you to answer now. We don’t want any spoilers. You’ve lived a lot of places, but if you could go anywhere to write for one month and money wasn’t an issue, where would you go?

I’ve always had a hankering to see Switzerland. I’m not much of a skier, but I’d love to see it and soak up the atmosphere.

That sounds fun. If you could spend the day with any three authors, living or dead, which ones would they be and why?

Ellis Peters (Edith Pargeter) to pick her brain about her intricate plots that always come together; Ellen Withers, who is a recent friend, and I just love her and her story that I’m reading; Dick Francis—I just love his mysteries in the horse racing world.

Sounds like a good line-up for growing in the craft of writing mysteries. What are the most fun, most feared, and most tedious parts of being an author?

Most fun is definitely having written “the end.” Most tedious for me is fact checking and reading galleys.

Fact checking definitely eats away at your time as an author. But it is so important. Speaking of getting all the little details right, we grow as authors as we write. Looking at your list of books, if you could go back and rewrite an early book, would you do it?

I’m laughing, because I’ve actually done that. In this day of self-publishing and print-on-demand, that’s not at all hard to do. When the rights to one of my older books are reverted to me, I go over it and make changes. Most see minor tweaks, but one or two have had some larger adjustments. I’ve also rewritten some older stories that were never published, because now I can see why they were never published and make them better.

Thank you, Susan Page Davis, for joining me with a Meet the Author Monday Interview. I’ve enjoyed getting this peek behind the curtains into your life as a writer. I’ve definitely learned some things about you that I didn’t know before. I’m sure our readers are in the same boat.  And readers, don’t leave yet. I’ve got more on Susan’s new release. You don’t want to miss finding out what part that tornado plays in the mystery.

ABOUT SCREAM BLUE MURDER:Scream Blue Murder Cover

A tornado rips through town, and Campbell McBride and her dad take shelter. Afterward, they try to help others who were hard hit, and a body is discovered in the debris of a cottage near their friends’ home. Was the man dead before the twister struck? The owners of the ruined cottage hire True Blue Investigations to help identify the victim and find out how he got on their property. Meanwhile, among the volunteers, Campbell meets her mother’s old school friend, Jackie. It seems Jackie married her mom’s former boyfriend—and now she has eyes on Campbell’s widowed father.

Meet the Author Monday: Delores Topliff

Meet the Author Monday Delores TopliffWelcome to this Meet the Author Monday interview with Delores Topliff. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Delores in person, and I’m excited to give you the chance to meet her now.  Let’s start off with something easy. Tell us a bit about yourself, Delores.

Thanks, Heather, for hosting me today. Where we are born shapes us. I grew up in Vancouver, Washington, along the Columbia River, and loved exploring our area’s history. Fifty years after the 1942 event, we learned that a Japanese I-25 submarine like the type attacking Pearl Harbor had entered our river and fired on a military installation. That triggered my writer curiosity and blended with my childhood desire to start a floating library on the river for people without library resources which came to life in Books Afloat. Requests for further story adventures with the same characters but adding Josh Vengeance surviving Midway and Erika Hofer fleeing Nazi Germany, led to Strong Currents, releasing today. Advance reviews are favorable.

So, your past influenced your present as a writer. I think that’s common, but I love to see how uniquely God accomplishes that in each of us. You’ve definitely got a great story about where your stories came from. What about your writing life? Do you have any writing routines or habits you follow for a productive writing day?

I almost always enjoy dark roast coffee first with my favorite coconut creamer and read enough chapters to complete my practice of reading through the Bible again each year.

I like to write early in early morning while I’m fresh and save my online university teaching and grading and other projects for later in the day.

You are a busy woman! I’m more a tea drinker, myself. But I do have a coconut one that I enjoy. So, that’s kind of like your coffee with coconut creamer, right? Writing at the right time for each of us is important. I’d say as much as the stories we choose to write. And you’ve already told us you’ve got a new release this week. Tell us about that. What prompted you to write Strong Currents?

My motivation came from being privileged to have Austrian-born, Ingeborg Oberweger as one of my three great college roommates. When we met at age 18 this totally impacted me. Before fleeing Germany during WWII, her family suffered unthinkable heartbreak. I knew their story needed telling. I didn’t know I would be privileged to adapt Inge’s family’s experience into Strong Currents. She knew this book was near publication but sadly lost her battle with cancer several weeks ago.

I’m so sorry to hear that. I know she must have been excited for the story and knowing her family’s legacy would live on through your book. It’s clear you’re giving readers an peek into her family experiences in Strong Currents. Do you give readers glimpses of yourself in the books you write?

I’m more visible as Annie in Books Afloat preceding Strong Currents as I really did want to operate a floating library on the Columbia River, but the hysterical beaver hunt scene in Strong Currents when Erika becomes instant friends with Annie parallels my real life fiasco when I showed Joan Hall of Ireland beaver habitat along a Canadian river. After her guide disappeared in holes several times, there was no pretense left and we’ve been close ever since.

I love a good story, and you seem to overflow with them. One day you’ll have to tell me that story in person. I’m sure it’s very entertaining. As authors, we tend to also enjoy a great story that others write. What is your favorite book from ones you’ve read recently and why?

In The Sound of Falling Leaves, Lisa Carter does a masterful job with setting and in-depth character building while sprinkling in just the right amount of details bit by bit. She especially presented gifted spiritual sensitivity and wisdom. I truly DID NOT want this book to end and am looking for her others.

I haven’t read any of her books, but I’m going to have to now.Don’t you love it when others recommend a good book? It sets the stage for me as a reader. What can readers expect when they pick up one of your books?

They usually find colorful characters that are partly rooted in my wacky sense of humor. Many are tied to real people I’ve known or observed. Others rise from inspiring people in history that deserve to be better known. I hope my books share stories that help readers develop informed takeaways. I was thrilled when one adult university World History student said, “You don’t just teach us facts. You teach us to think.” I want my books to entertain but will be happiest if readers also close the pages with an increased ability to face live out their own successful answers to life’s challenges.

That is a great goal for any author. I’m looking forward to Strong Currents. I always love a colorful character. They make stories memorable. I want to thank you, Delores, for stopping in today for a Meet the Author Monday interview. Readers keep reading to find out more about Delores and Strong Currents

Ivy Aaronson: Main Character Monday Interview

Ivy Aaronson Main Character MondayIvy Aaronson is our guest today in this Main Character Monday interview. Ivy comes to us from Where Love is Planted, the story by Sarah Anne Crouch in the new novella collection, Love Delivered. Love Delivered releases on Valentine’s Day from Scrivenings Press. Keep reading after the interview for more information on Sarah, the Love Delivered novella collection, and where you can get your copy.

Let’s start with an easy one, Ivy. Tell me a little about yourself?

My name is Ivy, and I’ve been working at my mom’s flower shop in Trammel, Texas for as long as I can remember.

It seems your name is very fitting. You’ve left us a lot of blanks to fill in. So, why don’t you tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?

I once spent a year in New York City. It was certainly different from little Trammel, Texas!

I imagine that might have been a little bit of a culture shock. I’m getting the idea you may be a woman of few words. Let’s try something different. What is your favorite book in the New Testament and why?

I have a hard time choosing because my dad is a preacher and I’ve heard lots of good sermons about different parts of the Bible. But I often find myself returning to 1 John over and over again when I need comfort or encouragement.

I love 1 John, but let’s go back to the Old Testament for a moment. God called Gideon to lead his army. Gideon didn’t believe he could, but he trusted and did as God asked. Have you ever felt like you weren’t equipped to do what God asked you to do? What did you do?

I’m at a time in my life when God has called me to be patient and live quietly. It can be hard sometimes, but my family members are an excellent support system.

I’m glad you have that support. It does go a long way in helping us reach our goals. Speaking of goals, Micah 6:8 says, “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Is there one of these you find easier to accomplish? Is one harder?

Kindness and giving flowers go together so naturally. I get to witness people showing kindness to others every day. There are times, though, when life humbles me and I am reminded of how prideful I can be.

Interesting. I’ve never thought of flowers and kindness in quite that way. And I’m with you on the pride and humility thing. Those lessons do like to sneak up on us through circumstances when we least expect them. If you could leave readers with one message, what would it be?

Your life matters, no matter what you or anyone else says. God loves you for who you are, and your life is meaningful.

What a great message for everyone. Before I let you go, let’s go over a couple fun questions and then some rapid fire questions. If you could have one exotic pet, what would it be?

I was obsessed with flamingos when I was little, so that could be fun. But they like to live in flocks and would not do well in my tiny apartment!

Very true, If you could travel through time, would you?

No. I think I would become so obsessed with fixing all my past mistakes that I’d never live in the present again.

That is a very unique answer. It really makes you think. For these next questions, just give me your quick, gut reaction.

Sunrise or sunset? Sunrise

Chocolate or Vanilla? Vanilla

No electricity or no plumbing? No electricity for sure. I could live with candles.

One final question before I let you go. If you had only three words to describe Sarah Anne Crouch, what would they be?

Misguided plant killer. (She means well, but can’t grow anything but daffodils.)

What a great way to leave us with a smile on our faces! Although, I have to say, I relate well to her plant killing ways. Thank you, Ivy, for joining us today. Readers, please keep reading to learn more about Sarah and the Love Delivered novella collection.

Group Effort: Wednesday in the Word

Group EffortIt’s a group effort. It takes a village to raise a child. No man is an island.

Can you think of any other phrases relating to our need for each other? I bet you can. There are many more out there.

As an author, I tend to think the opposite is true. God gifted me with this ministry, this way of encouraging others to live their faith, that feels like an individual more than a team sport. I write in my home without anyone else around. Even in marketing, I create and share graphics from the fortress of solitude known as my office.

But looks are deceiving. Before stories get to readers, they go to multiple editors, cover designers, layout people, and pre-publishing readers. The local Christian writers group I’m in also reads it.

That’s a lot of hands for my stories to pass through. And while necessary, those aren’t even the most important ones involved in my books. Yes, we can all agree that following what God has for you is the highest goal, but I’m talking about the physical carrying out of the ministry. One thing can’t be forgotten. That’s the people the ministry gives to.

I write because I love it. Because I love God, I write Christian fiction. But each individual story comes with a prayer that God will use it to encourage and challenge other believers to grow in their faith, just as He’s used each of my stories and countless other Christian stories in my own faith.

God’s given me the opportunity to do something I love to help spread the gospel, to share His truth with others. Many of those, I may never meet. But they’re still there. They’re reading the books I write, enjoying the stories I’ve told, and prayerfully, taking something away that grows or encourages their faith. Then, they go out and live their faith where others can see it. They may even share that book with someone else, giving God the opportunity to speak into another life through my fictional characters.

In every way, being an author is a group effort. And it’s because of this, I have a deeper understanding and appreciation for Paul’s words in Philippians 1:3-5. “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now.”

Don’t misunderstand. I’m not comparing myself to Paul, leading the early church. But I’m doing my part to share the truth of God’s word in the way God has blessed me to do it. As readers, you’re part of that. I want you to know I pray for you just like Paul prayed for the churches he ministered to. With joy, I thank God for the ways you’ve supported me and pray God will somehow use my words to touch your lives. I pray for you because you are an integral part of this ministry He’s given me. And I pray for you because God loves you, and I want you to know that on a soul deep level.

Thank you for being part of this group effort in sharing God’s love with others. I truly appreciate it.

Faith Caldwell: Main Character Monday Interview

Faith Moves MountainsLet’s welcome Faith Elaine Caldwell to today’s Main Character Monday interview. Faith is from Jenny Carlisle’s newest book, Faith Moves Mountains which released on January 31, 2023 from Scrivenings Press.

Welcome, Faith. It’s good to have you here today. For those who may be unfamiliar with you, will you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am the oldest of three kids. I have a sister, Hope and a brother, Junior. We live in a great medium sized town, Crossroads, Arkansas. I have been riding horses and competing in barrel racing since I was small. These days, I work as a CNA at the local nursing home. I intend to keep advancing my nursing career until I am an Oncology Nurse Practitioner.

That’s a wonderful goal. Great nurse practitioners are always needed, and I’d think that’s especially true in Oncology. Is there anything readers may find surprising about you?

At the First and Only Rodeo Queen pageant in our town, I was selected Miss Rodeo Crossroads, and my cousin Kayla won Miss Teen Crossroads.

What is your favorite Bible verse and why?

I don’t have just one favorite verse, but I have a favorite word that I’ve only heard in the Bible, Selah. It’s used a lot in the book of Psalms, and my dad, who is a pastor tells me it means “pause and listen.” That’s something I need to be reminded to do. I repeat this word to myself over and over when I’m getting too stressed and overwhelmed.

I think a lot of us could benefit from applying Selah to our lives. Is there a person from the Bible that you relate to most?

I try to model myself after Jesus’s good friend Mary, instead of her sister Martha. My sister Hope is the organizer, the one who remembers all of the details and keeps the family in line. She’s like Martha. I want to be the one who spends more time listening to Jesus, soaking up everything He has to say. I guess I need a little bit of Martha in me, too. But, when I remember to pause and listen, I can be like Mary.

There’s nothing wrong with a balance. The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Is there one of these characteristics you find is easier to show than the others?

Kindness comes easy for me. My mom and dad raised us to treat everyone the way we want to be treated. I love spending time with the residents of the home I work for, doing whatever is needed to make their day brighter. I’m especially partial to the veterans. They sacrificed so much for us, and they deserve all of our respect.

I have to agree with you on that point. Is there one that is more challenging than the others?

Definitely self-control. I know what I should do, and what I’m expected to do as the daughter of a minister. But, that can be pretty boring. There is a great big world that I’ve never experienced, and sometimes it’s hard to take things slow.

If you could give one message to those reading this interview, what would you tell them?

Can I have two messages?

Sure. We don’t really stick with rules on our Main Character Mondays, Faith. Feel free to mix it up.

First, don’t stop trying to find the balance between  trying new things and doing what you know is right. Second, There is no use trying to run from your past. God knows all about you, and loves you anyway.

While our Main Character Monday interviews have a serious side, we like to see the fun side of our guests too. So, Faith, get ready for some fun questions and some rapid fire questions.

If you could visit just one place your entire life, where would you go?

Paris, France. We have a Paris here in Arkansas, and I love to go there when I can, but maybe someday I could visit the real one. That would be amazing.

If you could choose one talent you don’t already have, what talent would you choose?

Picking up on what someone is thinking, or what secrets they might be hiding. I think I’m a little too gullible.

Dark or Milk Chocolate?

I should say dark because it’s healthier. But milk chocolate is so good. Sweet, gooey, luscious. Yum.

Beach or Mountains?

I love the mountains. I could spend hours and hours just sitting on top of a mountain, drinking in the view.

Sweet Tea or Lemonade?

Sweet tea, all day everyday.

If you had only three words to describe Jenny Carlisle, what would they be?

Ms. Jenny is patient, un-predictable and adventurous.

I want to thank Faith Caldwell for joining me today for a Main Character Monday interview. I’ve enjoyed learning more about Faith and can’t wait to read her story, Faith Moves Mountains by Jenny Carlisle. Readers, stick around. We have more about Faith and Jenny for you.
