Shuly Xóchitl Cawood is the author of the forthcoming short story collection, A SMALL THING TO WANT (Press 53, 2020), the memoir, THE GOING AND GOODBYE (Platypus Press, 2017), and the little advice book, 52 THINGS I WISH I HAD TOLD MYSELF WHEN I WAS 17 (Cimarron Books, 2018). Her forthcoming poetry collection, TROUBLE CAN BE SO BEAUTIFUL AT THE BEGINNING, won the Adrienne Bond Award for Poetry and will be published by Mercer University Press in 2021.

She has an MFA from Queens University, and her writing has been published in Brevity, The Rumpus, and Cider Press Review, among others. Her website is www.shulycawood.com.

Originally from Ohio, Shuly has now lived in the South long enough to know what sweet tea is and that "barbecue" means pork.

This all started because of the skunks. One recent early morning, just after my husband let the dog out to our backyard, he spotted a skunk by our gate. He went out to retrieve our dog before she got skunked, and then he saw white stripes moving along the back fence. Was it a different skunk? Same one? Most likely a different one. All this was enough to know there was a skunk situation.

I can't believe I am only discovering this author now. Loved this book. I am about to reread it again to figure out how she did it--it moves back and forth in time in such an easy way, it's a work of magic to never lose the reader.
