Six on Saturday – Rose and Iris Procession 🌸 4 – 11 – 24

This week is the middle month of our spring. All October I have been enjoying the gentle procession of the bearded irises in my garden. They seem to be perfectly adapted to our climate and make do with an occasional sprinkle from the hose.

Later in the month the roses begin their spring show. I have a lots of Vintage roses, mainly Bourbons, Hybrid Perptuals, Teas, and Hybrid Musks for their repeat flowers and huge bush potential. Some I have repeat plants of because they are so reliable in my garden like the China rose Mutabilis, that has butterfly-like large single blooms that start as pale yellow then turn to pink and red.

I also grow roses on the other end of the scale modern shrub roses for their hardiness and superior breeding and reliable flowers. The German Kordes rose breeders roses seem to be very reliable in my garden. As does the roses by David Austin. A typical suburban garden here in South Australia often is a row of mixed roses out the front and maybe a picket fence. It is a joy at the time of year, to ride down the side streets and view the suburban rose spectacular! We are often known as the state of wine and roses!🌹

Three favourite bearded irises Balloo, Champagne Journey and the delicious purple Swingtown. But it is the roses that dominate the end of October flower display. Here we have the very reliable David Austin Olivia Rose, Charles de Gaulle, Moonstone and For Your Eyes Only. Love the ‘eyes ‘ roses.New to my Garden this year, the mid pink Buffalo Rose is a found Rose that came to South Australia on the passenger ship The Buffalo. It is so lovely, I would definitely bring it with me if one could only choose one rose to bring to the new world! It’s amazing that people found the room on a clipper ship to bring roses! But this lovely Victorian confection would make your life better just by being in it! ❤ Also Scentimental,  Hybrid Musk Cornelia which I grew by cutting.  Shady Lady and Camille Pissaro.Darker roses Rhapsody In Blue, Charles de Mills,  rugosa Hansa, Zaide, Fire and Ice and Gallica Hippolyte. Cute little Joey visited my garden earlier this week with his mum. 🦘 They are surprisingly gentle on the garden and don’t bother with any of the roses, irises, cottage garden plants or even the vegetables in my vegetable garden. They are a bit like a cat and move around your garden with great dexterity, often on their haunches. They seem to love to eat the weed grass in my garden called Kangaroo grass and the barley grass weeds. Amazingly, they also know where all my birdbaths are and gently drink from them without tipping them. They must use them often to have memorized all the birdbath positions!More lovely irises Excite Me, Splatter Matters, Julia’s Song, Mallee Sunrise. 🌸

A side view of my rose garden, the poor old dovecote has fallen down in strong winds so many times this spring it had lost parts of it. However this was an accidental design improvement and now the wind goes through it and it stays put! Here we have some of the irises in flower, nepeta and the roses Fire and Ice and Reine Des Violettes.

That’s all from me. 🌸 See more beautiful Six on Saturday gardens from around the world, on the Six on the Saturday tag, our host is Jim you can find his blog here .
Thanks for visiting. 🌸🌼🧚‍♂️
