You Are what you READ

You ARE what you READ.

by Award-winning novelist Randy Ingermanson, "the Snowflake Guy.

Years ago I was talking to a fellow novelist whom I’d just met and I asked him what his Top Five favorite novels were. This is a question I ask writers a lot. I’m always looking for great books, and one place to find them is on the Top Five list of another writer.

Strong Characters but a Weak Plot?

Secret Place by Dawn Elaine Darkwood

----- Original Message -----

...I
have very strong characters, but a very weak plot. While my story is
primarily character driven, I feel I feel I put them in a place where

Fifty Abusive Moments inFifty Shades of Grey

Yes, you read that title right.  I'm so tired of being told that there's
no abuse in Fifty Shades of Grey, that I've decided to compile
something of a list.  A list of fifty abusive moments, to be

So you want a Critique? [RANT]

So you want a Critique?

WARNING! Incoming Rant!

A Critique...? Really? Are you sure that's what you want?

From the responses I've gotten on many different forums, and the responses I've seen others get, plus the resulting peanut gallery commentary, I'm not so sure a Critique is what some of you are actually looking for.

Let's start at the beginning.

Do you even know what a Critique

Writing Realistic Emotions -- The Dark Side

Once upon a time, I had a great deal of trouble writing Emotions. Luckily, I found a writer friend who was very skilled in doing just that. After months of begging, she wrote me this tutorial on how to evoke the Darker Emotions in Fiction.

How do I write a Novel that will SELL?

"How do I write a Novel

that will SELL?"

You begin by learning how to write Fiction properly.

Clue-by-four:

Fiction is Not written the same way one writes an essay, or journalism; how one is taught to write in school. Fiction uses a whole different sentence structure, (Action THEN Reaction,) a different style of paragraph division, (by Character -- not dialog,) and even different

The Difference between SHOWING & TELLING

Angel bent over, groaning in pain. "Damn Buffy, why in the Hell did you do that?"

The next thing she knew, he had his hands around her ankles and she was dangling over the edge of the railing.

Where do you put Character Flaws?

-----Original Message -----

Characters have to have flaws, but sometimes it's a bit hard to add those flaws in.  -- Concerned About Characters

Where do you put a Character's Flaws?

A character's greatest strength / greatest weakness
(normally both are one and the same,) should appear in the first scene that character
occupies.

If the opening scene features the main character, I show

Making Ideas into Stories

Moonfish by SnowSkadi

----- Original Message -----
How
do you develop an idea? How do you come up with the details behind
stories? Do you get them from reading books? Do you get them from modern
concepts? Or do they just come to you (if so, lucky you XD)? How do you
develop the world in which it takes place? People or settings first? Do
you include cults/religions/mass groups? How do
