Excerpt One:
Her skinnyfingers rippled across the strings. She played a G chord, one of the few chordshe’d
taught her inbetween gigs. She plucked it again, the twangy sound vibrating in her ears.
It was part ofher nightly backstage ritual. Most important was polishing and cleaning hisguitar.
He waspersnickety in the way he liked it. Lately, she had gotten the hang of it, butit had been rough going there for a while, as he was never satisfied withanything he asked her to do. Whether it was this task or another, she couldnever please him. Not until recently.
She’d thoughtbeing on the road would be a lot more fun. She didn’t hate it, but she didn’trelish it either. Time was a blur; it was as if school and her other life neverexisted, with every day seeming to stretch into an eternity.
She scanned themusty room, and when she was sure no one was lurking, Geri picked up the Gibsonagain and pretended to play the guitar like a rock god. Tossing her head back,she rolled her right arm like a windmill and closed her eyes, faking thestrumming and picking motions.
It was dumb,childish as all hell. But, screw it. She needed to let loose.
Of course, ifhe saw her doing this, she’d never hear the end of it.

Review: THE CLASS REUNION by N.L. Hinkens

What was done was done. The pastwas the past. But a 20-year high school reunion may bring it all back.
Heather never thought of comingback to Iowa, but the sudden death of a friend prompted her to, which alsocoincided with her high school reunion, where the classmates planned on payinga tribute to the departed friend. A threatening note at the reunion leads tomass confusion and paranoia among the group of old friends including Heather.Did someone know their secrets?
While working through all themystery, Heather recalls a cataclysmic event that spiraled her into her ownblack hole of guilt. If I were Heather, I would’ve done the same thing. Letthat bastard die.
It just seemed like whereverHeather went, these threatening notes with creepy statements were being sent.“Once a killer, always a killer.” Who was sending these? Possibly someone thatknew Heather’s secret? And why was this person targeting the people closest toher? Revenge?
Right away, you get into thismystery with all its suspense and cryptic pasts. It just keeps you riveted andthinking all the way. I tell ya, I didn’t see that shocking end coming.
An absolutely thrilling read!

Review: RELATIVE HARM by Caroline Fardig

A woman was found dead in theBaxter barn. It was the same woman that kidnapped Baxter’s brother. With means,motive, and opportunity, the meant that ever Baxter could be a suspect,including Ellie Matthews, who, once again, found the body.
Right away, this kicks off in aclassic whodunnit scenario, which I just love. This was a tough one for Ellieas she was still recuperating from the last case, was being interrogated by apompous female detective, and could not get her hands dirty by diving into theforensics. Fortunately, Ellie’s sassy stubbornness didn’t stop her from trying.I did like the MacGyver tactics she implemented to get the fingerprints.
You weed through the varioussuspects to find out who the killer was in this compelling mystery.
A good crime read!

Review: RIGHT BEHIND YOU by NL Hinkens

What if a vengeful ex was comingafter you? At least, that’s how it was feeling for Lauren, who had moved backhome with her family. The story takes a while to settle as I’m not really surewhere the scarecrow fear comes from or what happened with the ex. To be honest,this one didn’t quite rope me in like in “The Class Reunion.” Most of the timewe’re just dealing with Lauren’s crazy paranoia. Then there may be someconnection between her past and her business and all the while she doesn’t evenhint to what her terrible secret might be. I would’ve preferred a tiny hint tokeep me reading, which was hard to do.
I certainly wouldn’t get behind“Right Behind You.” Don’t even bother.

Review: THE BETTER SISTER by Alafair Burke

One woman seemed to have it all—perfect career, perfect husband, perfect life. That was Chloe. Still, could her online followers be right? Was she more concerned with image than reality?
The first few chapters kick-off to a slow, unappealing start as they talk about the woman’s work routine. Details were too monochromatic and political. That fancy party was so boring. By chapter 4, we start getting a little backstory on her marriage to her former brother-in-law, who left her sister and took her son. Sounds complicated.
Very slow. Very unimpressive. This author wrote with the famous Mary Higgins Clark, right? You’d think she’d pick up some good pointers from her. Like how to write a story that’s not so boring.
Forget the better sister. Where’s the better story?

Review: THE EX by Alfair Burke

The beginning was confusing. I didn’t really know what the MC was in this case. Was she a lawyer or a case worker or something? It was so hard to get the story through these random dialogues from people I didn’t know. How was this supposed to clarify the story?
So far, I’ve been really disappointed with this author. The only reason I picked up a book at all from her was because she co-authored with Mary Higgins Clark whose books I absolutely can’t get enough of.
Okay, so the girl was a lawyer trying to see her ex, a suspect in a triple homicide, in jail. Interesting premise, sure, but what a bad execution. The dialogue was all over the place. Nothing was clear. I hate books that I have to work too hard for.

Author’snote: I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for way too many years and this novella containssome of the wilder incidents that occurred. Yes, sex on the sidewalk is based on a true incident.

Excerpt One:
I took hishand. I was curious to see how well we danced together. I smiled as energeticsalsa music filled the club.
Dante spun mearound him and pulled me into a tight embrace. My skin heated wherever hetouched me, and my girly parts were yelling yee-haw. One moment, we were doingthe Cuban salsa, and the next, the Texas two-step. I was amazed at howperfectly we moved together.
A light touchand we were dancing the tango. Dante’s large hands skimmed down my back,grabbed my hips and up I went. He twirled me around his shoulders and loweredme down his body.
I rubbedagainst his crotch in a sinuous slide.
“Minx,” Dantewhispered and promenading me to the right, then the left.
I focused onthe slow, delicious glide of his body against mine, on the sensual havoc hewreaked with a single touch as we switched to the Texas two-step, then back tothe tango.
Dante dippedme. The carnal need in his eyes instantly made my panties wet. I watched indelight as he lowered his head until our lips met.
One second hislips brushed against mine. The next, Dante slid me between his legs and slowlypulled me back up. The bulge in his pants got bigger. I danced backward,tapping my heels on the floor, and breaking into the flamenco.
Withouthesitation Dante did the flamenco too. His every movement was elegant andsensual as his boots drummed a primeval rhythm. Feeling sexy as hell, I clappedmy hands rhythmically and joined him.
Dante wrappedan arm around me, pulled me close and ended the dance with a kiss.

Take this for example: I answered, “9-1-1 emergency, what’s youremergency?” And this hysterical woman yelled, “My bird is in a tree.” SometimesI really couldn’t help myself, so I said, “Birds have a tendency to do that,ma’am.” The woman screeched, “No! You don’t understand. My pet parakeet is inthe tree. I’ve just got to get him down.” Like I said, not a clue. “I’m sorryma’am but we don’t get birds out of trees.” The woman then cried, “But… Whatabout my husband? I hadn’t exactly studied poetry, but I am naked firstdidn’t really need to be translated. If I opened the door, would a nude man bestanding there? Would it be the stripper from the night before?
I remembered the way he’d looked at me, all sexy andserious at the same time. I’d felt an instant connection with him, or I neverwould have let him handcuff me.
A full minute passed as I braced my hand against thehandle, the desperate beat of my heart threatening to break through my ribcage. Then I twisted the knob and, in a rush, pushed through and slammed thedoor.
I stood facing it a while before I dared turn around.Would someone approach me?
No one did. I can do this.
I slowly turned, and the sight of the room stole mybreath. I pressed my hand to my chest as I was transported to another time andplace. Candles created a softly lit atmosphere. The room was draped in whitesilks that floated lazily in the breeze of a few fans. There was a canopiedfour-poster bed directly in front of me, and it was like… like ArabianNights. Like I was Scheherazade or something. The walls were completelymade of mirrors, making the room look larger and more elaborate, the bedroomreflected golden and beautiful on every wall.
This was the romance missing in my life. Not the hastyhookups that were so common in college. Not the way I’d lost my virginity inthe back of a cramped sports car, all awkwardness and pain. This was a romancenovel, a dream.
A low chuckle rumbled from the side of the room.
I turned, startled to see a man leaning back in anopulent chair, staring at me. His dark brown hair was pulled back. He wore abutton-down white shirt and black slacks, like he had just gotten in from theoffice. Not naked after all. He appeared to be about twenty-five with kind,hazel eyes and… wow. His legs were long. I’d never slept with someone whopromised to be so tall.
I bit my lip. He wasn’t the stripper from Cherries.
He gestured to the room with one hand. “You like it?” heasked in a mild tenor.
I nodded.
He unbuttoned the cuffs of his dress shirt, his eyesdowncast.
I twisted my hands together in front of my coat. This wasso awkward! “So, the contract…”
He chucked again but didn’t say anything.
“Kind of crazy, huh? What exactly am I doing here?”
Having undone his cuffs, he moved on to his shirt withslow deliberation, but he didn’t answer me.
“And how do you get to be a part of a, um… this?” Iasked, retreating until my back was flat against the door.
He pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it in a ballto the side of the room, then unbuckled his belt. It whipped through the loopsof his pants, and he held it for a moment, his mouth quirked into a teasingsmile before it hit the ground with a dull thud.
His eyes zeroed in on where my hand rested, just inchesfrom the door handle. “Do you feel safe?”
I shook my head once. This man was anything but safe.This house? Completely unsafe. It was like some weird fever dream, the wholething.
I could leave right now. If I wanted to.
I felt behind me until my fingers touched the doorknob.
The man paused in undressing, one hand on his zipper, histanned skin glowing in the low light of the room. He arched an eyebrow.
It was like he could see the thoughts as they racedthrough my head.
Why did I sign that paper? I chose this room, but… I’mnot ready. Am I? I squeezed my eyes shut.
“Mackenzie,” he said softly, “we don’t have to doanything you don’t want to do, but there was a reason you said ye. A reason youchose my door. I get it if I’m not your type.”
I opened my eyes. It was my turn to frown at him. Hecouldn’t possibly doubt his attractiveness. His chest was toned, tapering intoa flat stomach. He was the type of man who evoked the cavewoman in girls, theneed to feel protected. A knot formed in my throat as I observed the trail oflight-brown hair that began below his navel and disappeared into the band ofhis black trousers.
I shook my head, and his face fell.
“No, I didn’t mean—” My hand left the knob, and I took astep forward.
His teasing smile was back, and I realized what he’d justdone. He was messing with me, trying to get me to abandon my desire to flee tocomfort him.
I folded my arms, slightly annoyed, but mostly amused.“Well played.”
He bowed like an actor in a Shakespearean play with theflourish of an imaginary hat, managing to drop his pants at the same time.
I giggled. I couldn’t help it. It was so smooth yet sofunny.
When he straightened, the warmth in his eyes had changed.Now, they smoldered with something different, something primal.
Oh, boy. What did I get myself into?

Mackenzie, a shy college girl,thought that she was bad at sex and needed to be fixed. So, she gets adifferent kind of education at The Hall of Art and Pleasure, where she willlearn confidence, boldness, and satisfaction. Each time she gets a differentand pleasurable sexual experience. This was making her more daring and she wasliking it, too. Soon, this becomes a journey of self-discovery as Mackenzietries to figure out what she wants and she wanted this bookish nerdy guy. Butshe couldn’t go for him until she finished at The Hall of Art and Pleasure.Boy, did she get hot and raunchy. Was this purely experimentation? Or was thissomething else?
I must admit that I didn’t expectwhat Mackenzie found out at the house. At some point, I kind of wondered whatthe whole point was in all this. Was it all about sex? Can sex really bedetached from love? Or can it make it stronger?
An interesting love story.

However, Fingal forgets how violentand perilous the animal impulses that reside in the deepest recesses of theunconscious mind. And when Fingal unleashes a mysterious avatar of his innateknowledge, the entity appears as a burning man and immediately seeks tomanipulate innocent and unsuspecting people everywhere into immolatingthemselves. Now, with little hope of returning the fiery figure into his being,Fingal must capture his nemesis before it destroys the world.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Autumn, 1907: late one morning, some kind of torrid,invisible beast seemed to wrap itself all around Fingal T. Smyth’s body. Eachone of his toes twitching fiercely, he exited the castle and scanned thedistant, Scottish Highlands. Go back where you came from. As the entity wrappeditself tighter all about his person, Fingal blinked back his tears. I’mmelting, I am. Aye, it’s the heat of fusion.
Gradually, the beast’s heartbeat became audible—eachpulsation. At the same time, too, the illusory heat of transformation emittedan odor as of oven-roasted peppercorns dissolving in a cup of burnt coffee.
Over by the gatehouse, Fräulein Wunderwaffe appeared—thelittle German girl wearing a plain-sewn robe and square-crown bowler. In thatmoment, she no longer seemed to be a sickly child of seven years: herinscrutable expression resembled that of a wise, indifferent cat.
Perhaps even some kind of lioness. Fingal cringed, and herecalled a fragment of conversation from three weeks earlier.
“She suffers from a most unnatural pathology, an anguished,maniacal obsession with cats,” Doktor Hubertus Pflug had explained. “Ever sincethe poor girl was a baby, she has always regarded it her fate to one daymetamorphose into a glorious panther, for she believes herself to be einGestaltwandler. Do you know this word? It means shapeshifter and refers tosomeone who possesses the power to take the form of anything in nature.”
The heat radiated up and down Fingal’s spine now, and histhoughts turned back to the present. Aye, it’s a change of phase. I’m meltinginto a chemical compound. Despite all, he greeted the girl and willed himselfto flash a grin.
