Readerly: New Book Website

Hi guys! So today I learned about Readerly, which is being promoted as the indie alternative to Goodreads. WHICH IS AMAZING OH YAY! I love Goodreads, but it’s always great to see different variations of book comms. It currently needs an invite code to join, but you can get on the waiting list as well. Right now it seems to mostly function via its app, but the layout is really cool and it looks to be a great place for bloggers/reviewers!

Is anyone else on Readerly? I’d love to follow more...

Show Review: The Resident (2018)

The Resident is the perfect show for romance lovers, although it definitely isn’t for the faint of heart! The drama and gritty depictions can be super intense!

The show follows a core series of doctors and nurses at the fictional Chastain Hospital. The show spends as much time on the behind-the-scenes drama as it does on the medical cases that follow each episode, but what I really like is how the cast isn’t so big that the stories are spread across a dozen people. There’s only a handful...

Epic Fantasy I Want to Read

I just started the audiobook for Gardens of the Moon, which is an epic fantasy I somehow haven’t got around to yet. Then again, it’s not *somehow*, it’s just that I’m behind on ALL MY READING LISTS.

Gardens of the Moon is a 1999 epic fantasy book written by Steven Erikson, the first in a huge series that is complemented by Ian C. Esslemont’s series. Both are set in the same world and were conceived by the authors back in the 1980s. There’s so much to dive into with this series and I can’...

Children’s Book Review: Ruth and the Green Book (2010)

Ruth and the Green Book by Calvin Alexander Ramsey, Gwen Strauss

This was a great children’s book about the historical travel guide The Negro Motorist Green Book, which was written by Victor Hugo Green in 1936 to help Black travellers find friendly lodging and petrol stations while travelling through a segregated, Jim Crow USA. That things like this had to be created because people’s minds were so closed and bigoted is utterly infuriating, but this story itself is very uplifting and shows...

Book Review: The Colour of Magic (1983)

The Colour of Magic by Terry Pratchett, Narrated by Tony Robinson

❧ audiobook
‘I’ve been thinking about dragons all my life, but this is the first time one’s turned up!’

My introduction to Terry Pratchett came with book version of Good Omens many years ago. Watching Neil Gaiman’s incredible, lovely determination to ensure that his friend’s vision was actualised and honoured with the adaptation earlier this year made me really want to go back and read the rest of Pratchett’s works. I rec...

Show Review: Santa Clarita Diet (2017)

I’m so bummed that this show didn’t get a fourth season. It really deserves one. Few pairings have made me laugh as much as Timothy Olyphant and Drew Barrymore. Liv Hewson and Skyler Gisondo are such a good complement duo, too. For a show about a zombie, this show is so darn cheerful and sunny.

For anyone who hasn’t encountered this glorious horror-comedy, it’s a half-hour show that follows a California family after the mother becomes a zombie. \o/

Zombies in this universe are differ...

Indie Books TBR.

There’s so many new awesome books that I’ve added to my TBR list that I can’t wait to read. If only I had more time!! I’ve had a couple of these for a while now and I hate how long it’s taken me to have time to read, but I’m hoping to be able to dive into them soon.

Has anyone read these yet? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Rise of the Dragon Queen (Legends of Ethota #1) by Darrah Steffen:

The creatures of old have vanished. Dragonia was once a kingdom where magic roamed free...

Review Roundup

Masquerade Season by ‘Pemi Aguda [short story]

This one really made me think and it hit me harder than I anticipated. Actually, Masquerade Season reminded me of The Giving Tree, honestly. One of those stories where the message makes you ache and it leaves you deeply melancholy.

The Sea Is Salt and So Am I by Cassandra Hartt [fiction]

I got a chapter sampler version, so I’m only reviewing the couple of chapters I read, but I really, really like the prose in this one. There’s a ver...
