Top 10 Best WordPress Plugins

TOP 10 WORDPRESS PLUGINS THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND BUT NOT YOUR BUDGET

THE 10 BEST WORDPRESS PLUGINS EVER!

These plugins are the best-est.

After years of blogging, and as a web designer, I’ve tested out a lot of plugins on WordPress. Some have been great additions for my clients’ projects as well as my own websites.

Others, well, have sucked and quickly got deleted. Expunged from the server, pronto!

But we’re going to focus on the ones that have made a phenomenal impact on my blogs so much so that I wouldn’t be able to “do business” without them.

Top 10 WordPress Plugins

If you’ve ever wondered “how does she get her site like that?” on anyone’s site, including mine, today’s a fantastic day. I’m going to fill you in. So today, here are my top 10 WordPress plugins that will probably blow your mind (and I’ll explain why) and make your life a whole heck of a lot easier.

WHY AD INSERTER IS ONE OF THE BEST WORDPRESS PLUGINS

1. Ad Inserter
Ad Inserter is a plugin you can use to control how your ads appear on your pages. If you’re using Google AdSense, this would be a great plugin to add. I use the manual block method with the shortcodes, with Elementor formatting, for most of my new material on the site. You could mess around with “after 3rd paragraph, before content,” etc. but I stick to shortcodes because I have a specific template I use for my blog pages now. I love that you can see where the blocks are on the page if you want to go up to the admin dashboard at the top to see how everything lays out. It’s perfection.

ACCESS THE RESOURCE LIBRARIES

WHY YOU SHOULD USE ANALYTIFY ON YOUR WORDRESS DASHBOARD

2. Analytify
Analytify connects directly to your Google Analytics. I like this one a lot and use it regularly, because it tells me very quickly what my top pages are for a set timespan, along with my general stats that I check daily, just at a glance. I have found it to be reliable and accurate, so this is a plugin I can highly recommend.

WHY YOU'LL WANT ELEMENTOR (AND NOT DIVI) AS A LANDING PAGE BUILDER

3. Elementor
Blog like a pro with Elementor. Let’s face it–Gutenberg wasn’t exactly a smash hit. It still has some formatting issues, and you may not like how your WordPress theme displays your articles, especially if you want to have images to the side but not necessarily have them take up a whole page frame because you’re trying to include your pin image also. So Elementor gives you more control over your website’s appearance, and it’s going to be your best friend with creating landing pages. You’re going to LOVE creating landing pages as you and I get to know each other better. And you’ll be aces at them, too. Elementor, in my opinion, is a must. (Full disclosure – I have the pro version.)

As a designer and “recommender” of software tech for blogs, I have to go with Elementor over Divi, hands down. Divi ties you to their software, and if you stop using it, you’re left with a ton of shortcode on your site. With Elementor, your data like text and images stay. But that’s just one major plus of using Elementor over Divi. (Personally not a fan of Divi at all.)

USE THIS PLUGIN TO INTEGRATE ETSY WITH WORDPRESS EASILY

4. Etsy Shop
If you run or open up an Etsy shop, this is a fantastic plugin to have. It’s responsive now, unlike before when the plugin first came out. So you can display items in your shop without having to do a lot of tech. It operates with shortcodes from a single Settings panel, and you can insert them wherever you want. Works great in widgets as well as Elementor blocks. So if you’re on the fence between switching from a broad marketplace setup like Etsy has going on and having your own store without the marketplace, you can slowly make that transition with the Etsy Shop plugin.

START A MEMBERSHIP SITE EASILY WITH THIS PATREON PLUGIN!

5. Patreon WordPress
I have to admit, using Patreon WordPress has made it super simple to run a membership-based portion of my website. This is where my members have access to materials the rest of the readers do not. For a monthly fee, they can easily access their login page via the Patreon WordPress plugin, and log in easily to get their downloads. So if you’ve ever wanted to have a membership website, this is one way to do it. The other membership plugin you could use, if you’re taking payment from your own shop, is Simple WordPress Membership.

ACCESS THE RESOURCE LIBRARIES

THIS IS HOW EASY IT IS TO START A MEMBERSHIP SITE!

6. Simple WordPress Membership
Simple Membership has allowed me to offer full-site access to all my products (worth over $1000 now) and accept payments on my store. I use this primarily for my Lifetime Access Pass, which allows my members access to ALL of my products in my shops. You can easily add members with email, name and provide a password. You set the levels, and can decide what content, including images, the reader has access to. The plugin has already built-in login member pages, making it really easy for your audience to gain access to their downloads and see your new content. I love it.

SELZ VS. STRIPE - THE NO-BRAINER!

7. Selz WordPress eCommerce
Selz in general is probably the best 3rd party merchant software I’ve found that doesn’t require extensive underwriting or additional hassle. You sign up, verify your bank account, and you’re ready to go. You know those horror stories you hear about people signing up for Stripe and then getting shut down after 7 days or so? That doesn’t happen with Selz. You can use it for FREE, too, up to 5 products. This particular plugin integrates with WordPress easily so you can add “blocks” from Selz, adding in your products as you see fit. I love it. I actually make more book sales on Selz than I do on Amazon, so this is a definite must-have for me. Get $30 in a free credit here when you sign up

I don’t like Stripe at all because they don’t have great customer service, and they’re known for shutting merchants down left and right for sometimes no reason at all. Selz has never given me hassle and their customer support is same-day, and via chat, too. They’re based out of Australia. You can offer digital products, physical goods, and services. Highly recommend.

ACCESS THE RESOURCE LIBRARIES

THIS EDITORIAL CALENDAR IS A MUST-HAVE FOR WORDPRESS

8. WordPress Editorial Calendar
This is what I use when I start drafting headlines for future blog posts. Sometimes having a visual representation of scheduled content works better for some bloggers. If you like to see things mapped out content-wise for your blog, this is a must-have. There are other versions, but this is the one I use on my own blogs and it works great. That way, when I think or write a great headline, I don’t forget it and can quickly add it to the calendar for later drafting. This plugin will also help you schedule out content with set release times and dates. Never lose a clever headline again! Think of it as a way to prompt yourself into writing content…

HOW TO KEEP YOUR WORDPRESS SITE RUNNING FASTER THAN A CHEETAH

9. WP Optimize
My blog on the backend is HUGE. Lots of stuff going on and moving gears everywhere. Plus, tons of media, plugins, and extensions. So, WP Optimize is what I use to keep things loading fast for my readers. Page caching is a big deal when you’re creating a lot of content, loading images, and running PHP processes. Use this to speed things up a bit.

WISH YOU COULD ORGANIZE YOUR WORDPRESS MEDIA LIBRARY? HERE'S HOW!

10. Folders
This is a more recent discovery, because I had an issue with my media library and searching for images. I was like, there has to be a better way to do this. Did you know you can use folders to organize your media library on WordPress? Yeah. So I categorize my images by source type, namely by a subscription or the original artist/photographer. Because I know instantly which images belong to which photographer or artist. You could also use this to categorize function or topic, too. Whatever floats your boat! But this is a new must-have for me to stay organized with my images, pages, and posts (yes, you can put posts and pages in folders, too) so that as your blog grows bigger, you don’t necessarily have to rely on categories or tags to keep things neat and tidy. It’s like a Marie Kondo for content in WordPress.

WHAT PLUGINS DO YOU LOVE? HERE ARE MY FAVORITES!

And that’s it! Those are my top ten WordPress blog plugins that help me run my blogs efficiently. (And with the exception of Elementor, have been absolutely FREE).

So now you can see some of the backend of my blog and what makes everything run. Feel free to try out some of these plugins and see which ones you like having. You might find a way to improve your processes or content production as a result.

Happy blogging,
Kerrie

Pinterest Marketing Amplification – the Book

New Pinterest Book Helps You Amplify Your Presence

Why amplify on Pinterest? Isn’t pinning 4 images per post or page enough? Shouldn’t looping pins keep my content in front of Pinterest users? Is paying for tribes in Tailwind really worth it? Why should I worry about spreading out my images and evaluate my pinning frequency? What’s the deal with promoting ads? Do I need to spend money in order to be found? How can I get more people to be more aware of my brand? None of my landing pages are converting even though I get a lot of Pinterest traffic—what am I doing wrong?

So many questions. I have a lot of answers for you.

Pinterest Marketing Amplification focuses intensely on content creation, efficient pinning, and search, so you can get back to writing and creating. For example, how to get more pins out there streaming in a steady flow of pre-qualified readers to your website. Numbers and analytics—what matters and what to look at closer than what you might currently be. The mindset of the user. Writing clever headlines, making preview pins and drawing a pre-qualified audience into your world. But most importantly, how to get you to the point where you have a winning strategy—defined as incoming sales coming in so routinely that you’re able to rank on whatever platform you’re selling on, be able to count on a more frequent sales trend, and plan new products with confidence.

Create remarkable posts so you can use pieces of it to build your pillars of content. Spend more time creating and writing while Pinterest helps you find your future customers who are already expressing an interest in what you offer.

That’s why we’re on Pinterest in the first place, right? To find our people. To get them to see us for the talented writers and creators and sources of inspiration that we are. To generate sales.

I have looked forward to writing this book for so long. Took three months to document and get everything down in an organized fashion for you, but it was worth it. YOU are worth it.

I fricking love this book. I hope you will, too.

Quantity vs. Quality Content?

I’m a big fan of Gary Vaynerchuk’s content, and regularly read and watch his posts and vlogs simply because he’s kind of a no-nonsense, get-it-done, pro-entrepreneur kind of guy.

Gary was asked the ultimate content question: quality or quantity? What should be my focus?

He said quantity, and backed up his answer with the logic that you can’t measure what’s working for you without pushing out a lot of content and posts. He’s right. You can’t. After all, “quality” is subjective, right? And you could theoretically be publishing a few quality pieces here and there of what you consider to be quality content and spending a lot of time on it, but get no real response. Do you push out more of the same just in bulk? Do you keep hammering out the same message… just more of it?

I couldn’t help wondering about the cons to that approach, in choosing quantity or quality or vice versa. Pushing out so much “quantity” in terms of posts that quality gets neglected altogether. What happens when you regularly push out content of poor quality? In my opinion, you “train” the audience you have in making the determination that you don’t care about quality. I don’t like that idea, really. Losing an audience because you focused on pushing out so much s#it that you lose their respect and trust.

But what about quality over quantity? Well, you lose the ability to test things out, and your frequency and probability of being found or discovered by new audience members decreases. What is really working? Can you really make a judgment call from just a few posts or pieces of content? No, you can’t.

So here’s my opinion, and I come to this opinion after so many years of blogging and generating designs. You need both quality and quantity. You need quantity to test things out for traffic and gaining an audience. You need quality for respect and sales. I think the main reason why Gary approaches and appreciates quantity more is because people often get a sense of perfectionism syndrome when typing and creating. That’s normal. It happens. But in the more extreme sense, it keeps people from communicating, testing, and converting. You simply need more.

Yes, you’re going to feel redundant. Yes, you’re going to feel like you’re kicking a dead horse at times. You’ll get over it.

So how do you balance both? How do you answer the call of both while being efficient and without spending a ton of money and time (our valuable limited resources) in achieving this balance?

Here’s the answer. You use quality templates as a foundation, and generate as much content as you can using them, so everything looks cohesive and the same (for branding purposes), and you use quality images. Start with a good base. You can then test all your posts and images from that point. Use a scheduler. Publish regularly, and often.

If you’re not a designer, you’re in luck. I have a plethora of templates that are $30 and under (some even under $10), that you can use to get started. These save you TIME. Valuable time. Customize your own images and text, and you’re set to go within minutes.

The main point is, stop thinking that everything has to be perfect from the get-go. Just start with a solid foundation and you’ll be steps ahead from your competition. Get some book mockups going. Get a new lead magnet out. Just keep creating, and keep both quantity and quality in mind.

It’s an endless debate, I know. But I really do think you need both as a writer and blogger. I’m excited to see what you create.

100 Pinterest Marketing Business Tips

New release!

100 Pinterest Marketing Business Tips covers my very best tips for marketing with Pinterest, including some aspects of blogging, landing pages, email marketing, and writing excellent copy.

Loved writing this book on Pinterest marketing business tips! You’ll find this helpful if you’re starting out with Pinterest and don’t have a firm handle on it yet. Includes tips not found in Pinterest Marketing. This is one of those succinct, to-the-point type books with instruction you can put into play straight away. Plus, it addresses some commonly found misinformation and clears some things up.

If you haven’t embarked on the Pinterest journey yet for marketing your business, it’s not too late. New Pinterest business users are starting this year and finding great success. And, traffic is definitely up early this year–there’s an uptick in traffic in early August, which is about 3 months earlier than normal. Great signs for success to come in the fall/winter months!

I’d love for you to check this new book out! One of my favorite points is about “intense interests” and how that plays into your business model, so you can do and blog about things that will bring you joy every single day. Pinterest marketing is one of my favorite subjects to talk about, and I think you’ll love it too once you see how much web traffic and new business you can get from it.

Pinterest Marketing Amplification – the Sister Book to Pinterest Marketing

Sister book or a sequel–whatever term you fancy is fine with me! Either way, the exciting news is that Pinterest Marketing is going even deeper into the realm of amplification specifically with a new book called Pinterest Marketing Amplification: the 7 Methods to Amplify Your Reach & Sales Conversions.

Amplification was only briefly discussed in the first book, with how I reached 14+ million monthly viewers in just 3 months. If you haven’t read about how I did it, you’ll want to check out Pinterest Marketing right now and get caught up before you venture into Pinterest Marketing Amplification.

During my testing between December 2018 and February 2019, there where three strategies or methods I tested out that worked independently as well as together in growing a follower base as well as getting those pins to get engagement. This next book zeros in on those methods or strategies so you can understand and learn how to do it yourself. It gets pretty detailed, so be prepared and catch up on your Pinterest Marketing reading.

Pretty excited about this book. I get emails all the time from readers telling me about the difference the course has made along with the book, too. I think Pinterest Marketing Amplification is going to be a winner to read and have in your marketing toolbox so you can grow.

Hoping you absolutely love it.

Buy on Amazon

Any of the following situations resonate with what is happening in your daily business life?

The evil blank cursor taunts you from a white screen as you try to figure out what to send your email list. Your freebie incentive just isn’t working. You get maybe a few signups every month, but the unsubscribes cancel out your growth. You’re not growing your email list. You know that email sequences work, but yours is sad, pitiful, or it’s not bringing in sales like you had hoped. You’ve worked hard at growing your email list, but 80% of your list doesn’t even open your emails (aka freebie hoarders), and you’re paying your email service provider good money. You don’t really know what you’re doing, so you’re shooting from the hip with each and every email, trying to be clever, and instead of sales, you end up with a bunch of unsubscribes instead.

If ANY of this sounds like what is happening to you, Email Marketing Magic: Lead Magnets, Sales Funnels, Opt-in Freebies, and Content Upgrades – from Amateur to Expert will help you establish a firm foundation for an automated way to identify with your ideal audience, set the tone from the top with your lead magnet, how to deliver surprises and value with each and every email, and you’ll learn how to close that sale with gentle nudging and a consistent brand message.

It’s not just about the size of the list (although big converting lists really help). It’s whether that list converts.

Let’s unpack what you’re going to learn in Email Marketing Magic:

• What staying on-brand in your email messaging really means and what entrepreneurs forget when they’re writing and designing those emails

• Welcome email essentials and what it needs to accomplish and include

• Features and benefits your lead magnet has to address in order to lead to a conversion

• How to create and stick to an email editorial calendar

“I have 20,000 page views a month and only get maybe 50 new subscribers every month.”

“My sales funnel gets a lot of new subscribers but no one is buying my product.”

“I get a lot of engagement leading up to my product, but no one buys it. Does it suck? Is it overpriced? Not enough value?”

These are all problems and challenges that luckily can be fixed. Good news, yeah?!

Stop feeling anxious. Stop stressing.

Maybe even take some days off? Because you can afford to?

Are Pinterest Monthly Views a Vanity Metric?

There’s been some debate online on whether Pinterest monthly views are a vanity metric or not. So today, let’s open this up and debate this from a few different angles, so you can decide for yourself, once and for all, if you actually believe the Pinterest “experts” that make this claim.

For starters, I’m a huge believer in focusing on one form of marketing and mastering it head to toe. I don’t believe in running a business off of social media or relying on those platforms. But I am a big believer and advocate of anything search-based like Pinterest, YouTube, Google, SEO, and building a solid email list, etc. This is exactly why I’ve made Pinterest my primary focus for the last 3 years, and why those efforts have paid off big time.

So let’s start from the ground up, with a little history here on my background with Pinterest. I’ve done an incredible amount of testing every single month with Pinterest since December 2018, and grew my account from 80k monthly views to 14+ million in just 3 months. I started conducting my own testing after being stuck at around 50k-150k monthly views on Pinterest, with just 75k or thereabouts in monthly page views on my blog. My goal was to conquer Pinterest once and for all, to test what processes worked the best, and what scored the most engagement as well as click-throughs to my site. And to be honest, I used to follow Pinterest-oriented blogs, and despite listening to their advice, none of it worked and there was only a little growth in spurts here and there. Quickly lost whatever growth I had a few months later, because there seems to be a focus on pinning “what’s popular” for that month, instead of focusing on a more long-term strategy. I found it strange that these bloggers were making claims of huge success with Pinterest but would never show their analytics.

From what I can see online, I am the ONLY Pinterest course provider who freely shows her Pinterest analytics both publicly and in my course, along with Google analytics and sales. Here’s my advice – if a Pinterest “expert” isn’t being transparent with their analytics, don’t take their course. And with so many people claiming to be experts at Pinterest and creating courses to make money off of unsuspecting people new to Pinterest marketing, I often get annoyed with “experts” who make claims without providing any sort of support behind it, much less claim to be successful with Pinterest when their numbers are lacking. Claiming wild success with less than 50k, 150k, or even 500k monthly views. (Some had to resort to Facebook ads to sell a Pinterest course. Think about that for a second.) These claims do nothing but confuse hard-working bloggers trying to focus their attention on Pinterest and the benefits it has for bloggers.

The middle column of Pinterest Analytics reflects your ability to reach. While it is essential to focus on conversion to sales, click-throughs and saves, it is equally important to focus on reach as well, because without reach, you are only marketing to a smaller segment of the population you COULD be reaching. Ask yourself this: without reach, would you be able to grow your email list or get people to your website? No. So this is where I’d like to remind bloggers that targeted, keyword-related, pre-qualified lead reach is super important. Thus, not a vanity metric. The right column reflects domain traffic, clicks and saves for pins from your own domain. This is engagement from your own pins – and probably the most telling of all three columns on how your blog is performing in the Pinterest arena. The monthly page views is merely a reflection of the middle column. Your ability to reach. It could be argued that this also reflects the quality of your keywords, the relevance of your pins to your audience and Pinterest as a whole, and niching out your blog in a way that is loose enough to have various topic avenues to tap into, but also tight enough to be curated and interesting to your audience.

So are Pinterest monthly views really a vanity metric? Yes and no. Here’s why “yes” – disclosing the middle column alone is merely a showing of a series of pins (the user’s included) that went viral, that maybe a majority of them didn’t belong to the Pinterest user. While it can’t be easily manipulated, it doesn’t entirely infer that the Pinterest user is a successful blogger.

Now, here’s why Pinterest monthly views are NOT a vanity metric: combined with the right column, it shows ability to reach, a fine use of keywords and relevant pins to their audience, along with ability to convert with engagement. But one thing is for certain. If the user has a higher number in those columns, they are DEFINITELY converting traffic tot heir website.

A few things to remember: click throughs do not equate to sales. Saves to not equate to click throughs. Closeups doesn’t necessarily mean the user was interested. It could be the user couldn’t read something small on the pin. BUT. If that center column and right column on Pinterest analytics are both high, you can bet that the Pinterest user is getting HEAVY traffic. Which gives them more opportunities to convert pre-qualified interested people into buyers.

But here’s a truth. Knowing what I know having tested Pinterest and seeing growth, I can tell you flat out that many Pinterest “experts” are faking it until they actually make it. They’re fronting.

So here’s a rule that I like to follow. If you’re going to talk about success with Pinterest or any other platform, be willing to show your Pinterest analytics, Google analytics (before and after), and screenprint of sales from a merchant provider.

Bottom line, provide pictures or it didn’t happen. We still have Pinterest “experts” teaching people to make sure that the first 5 pins they pin should be their own. Still have “experts” teaching that they should pin at certain times during the day. Still have Pinterest “experts” saying that monthly viewers on Pinterest is a vanity metric. That’s only something people with low monthly viewer numbers say, because they haven’t learned how to amplify their Pinterest account.

Transparency is important when you’re teaching a course. This is why I provide my blog followers with the FULL picture of my analytics, screenprints of my sales to date over the past 3 years, and also my Google analytics. Pinterest can be a game-changer for bloggers who give it the time it requires, but bloggers also need to have a firm understanding of how all those moving parts work together, and also, the 7 methods of Pinterest amplification.

So, to sum it up, no, I don’t think that Pinterest monthly viewers is really a vanity metric. It’s a number that reflects so much more. But you really have to look at the full 3-column analytic view to see how well a blogger may be doing. So that’s my take on that, and if you disagree with me, that’s totally ok. I’m just speaking from experience with an intense focus on Pinterest. Or, maybe I gave you something to think about. Maybe you even agree with me.

Why I’ll Never Recommend CreativeMarket for Creatives

CreativeMarket seems like it would be a great place for creative types to be and open shop. Think again. Having been with them for over a year, with a successful shop with several 5-star reviews, I closed up shop on their platform today for a multitude of reasons.

I’ve been talking to others with shops and have discovered that I’m not the only victim of product pirating. Some of my favorite designers, including my favorite theme designer, Hello You Designs (HYD), have had their products lifted from CreativeMarket and placed on file exchange sites, Russian-hosted sites and forums, and we have no way to report these buyers to CreativeMarket and keep them from gaining further access to our files. They typically create new accounts, buy something, and then demand a refund either same day or within minutes of purchasing. They specifically look for reasons to do so, being overly picky, not reading the description, finding loopholes, or become problem customers from the get-go. Or, they’ll file chargebacks, and still use the product they got. So I know of over 20 creatives that have had enough that are either scaling back or leaving their platform altogether. The customer service is horrible to creatives. You have zero say in whether or not to grant a refund (if there’s a technical compatibility issue), and the people that don’t deserve one get it from their support team. Meanwhile, creatives get fairly rude emails and demands put upon them by customer service. I refuse to have to drop my family plans on a holiday weekend to answer a message demanding something from someone I don’t know. If someone can’t wait until regular office hours, they don’t need to be my customer. Unfortunately, CreativeMarket attracts a lot of these small-minded, demanding people, and for shop owners, they’re a huge hassle. The payout is only 70% (which also means as a consumer you end up paying more than you would supporting the creative’s work on their own website for a lesser price), and shop owners only get paid once a month, around the 10th. That’s a long time to wait for your funds.

Many of us are closing up shop. Jennifer at HYD let me know that her site and sales went much better after closing up her shop (she has only a few designs left on there that thieves have already pirated). More traffic to her own website, and a 100% cut minus processing fees with her merchant provider.

As a creative, I had to take a stand. I love that you may have found me on there, but I had to close up shop on principle. It’s not right to download files, demand a refund, and then continue to use the product. That takes away from my kids’ plates, and I can’t support that. CreativeMarket has long lived off of our talent and creativity, and this has got to stop.

All of my designs are available through a membership, via Patreon, or on my Etsy shop or my online store. I welcome you to support and enjoy my designs there on those platforms, and thank you for your understanding in advance.
