Pinterest Tips for Authors
I’m friends with a lot of authors, and I’m often asked what my best tips are for authors specifically for Pinterest marketing. The same concepts that apply to bloggers apply to authors, as well, but it’s the pin image type that needs to differ, and align with the overall goal: make more book sales. So let’s go over some of my Pinterest tips for authors so that you can get the most conversion possible for your books and brand.
Here are a few specific Pinterest tips that are essential for authors to know:
Use a profile image like an author headshot rather than a book image. Humanize your profile so that followers connect with you as an author and relate to you. They want to know who you are and giving them a chance to fall in love with your books starts with you as the writer. Remember – you are the brand (not your books)!Contemplate adding the word “author” or “romance writer” (using your specific genre) with your profile name. It’s easier for people to find you based on “author” keyword searches. By inserting this extra word or phrase, you’re setting the audience up for what they can expect from you. Authorish stuff. Books. Reviews. Bookstagram images. Because I’m more of a blogger and designer with the use of my time, I don’t have author next to my name. But you can do whatever you wish or whatever you feel is appropriate for your brand.Just because Pinterest is visual, doesn’t mean that you don’t need to focus on words. But all we’re talking about here is the use of keywords. I can’t express how many times I see authors uploading images of their book covers with little more than the title of the book or the file name and their author name. That’s not what to do here. Use the Pinterest search bar and type in a keyword phrase related to your book or genre, and use the supplementary search ideas to create full sentences using those phrases or words.

What makes certain book or bookstagram pins stand out from others? What gets readers on Pinterest to take action and buy?
Bookstagram images stand out more than simple book cover images. If you want to grab the attention of readers, and make more sales, use bookstagram-style images, real scene mockups, and real photographs that have been run through Lightroom (for brightness or correction). Avoid cheesy mockups like 3D or basic iPad/hardcover mockups. Those will not do anything for you. As someone with a huge bookstagram board with a ton of comments on my pins, users on Pinterest love the bookstagrams and comment regularly, engaging with those photos. I have not had a single person comment on a standard book cover (they’re just not that interesting), and the re-pin rates on book covers only is extremely low.You don’t need Photoshop to create stellar book images. You can use Canva, as well, and Lightroom’s mobile app is completely free, so you can correct images and create them quickly for Pinterest. Make sure you use long, vertical sizes and not squares for your pins. The new recommended sizing is 1000×1500 for best practices. The best-performing pins that lead to book sales on your site and Amazon have a free download associated with them. The best ones are actually NOT a free book already in your backlist. The best ones are actually helpful magnets about reading, book lists, bookish-related things like book clubs, wine/cheese/book parties, or for non-fiction, lead magnets about the topic in question. This is not the time or place for poorly-lit or amateur photos, or spamming your book images all over the place. Pinterest recently came out and said that they place value on NEW pin images. So you’ll want to create a variety of pins for each URL on your website regularly and only re-pin the same image (called looping) once every 4-6 months or so. Fresh, new pins of your books and posts are what counts.
So those are my best tips for authors who want to market themselves free on Pinterest. I use Pinterest for many of my books, and create bookstagram-type images, and lead the Pinterest users back to my website, where they can learn more about my books and other writing projects. I’ve been able to meet a lot of wonderful people who have found me on Pinterest and have read my books they found on there. To say that it’s a worthwhile time investment would be an understatement!
Just remember, Pinterest is a community and it’s not all about you, you, you. Be sure to re-pin your favorite book bloggers, some of your fans’ pins, and other authors in your genres. You’re much more likely to be found on Pinterest when you engage in community-oriented behaviors.
Happy pinning!

Artful Agenda Calendar Planner & Mobile App
If you love pretty calendars, stickers, and list-making, there’s an app (online and mobile) that you’ll absolutely love, and it’s called Artful Agenda.
What it is
Artful Agenda is a new online calendar application that syncs between desktop & mobile app versions, and picks up your Microsoft Outlook, iCloud, and Google calendars.
You can get a free trial to try it out, and the monthly cost is just $3.99. I personally think that’s a bargain given everything it does (and in such a pretty, easy way!)
Use my referral code Rk65828 when you sign up so you can get exclusive stickers and covers unlocked absolutely free. (Hint – nice little bonus!)
Favorite Features
One of my favorite features of this app is the project lists pages. I tend to be a list-maker with my designs and blog, and this is a feature my other calendar apps just do not offer.
Finish your list item, and it crosses it out in one click. Easily create subitems just by using the tab button. Create as many lists as you want – from groceries to projects, and bucket lists. I love how it integrates with my iPhone’s alerts and syncs so seamlessly well.
Daily Views
The daily view has some excellent features, from water intake habit tracking to goals, notes, tasks, priorities, an inspirational quote, and meal planning or meal documentation (a great way to track calories, by the way).
The listicle cross-out when complete feature carries over into all the views of the calendar, making it easy to remind yourself of things that have yet to be completed. Feels pretty good seeing everything crossed off, too. Kind of addicting, really!
Monthly Views
I tend to use the monthly view as a high-level overview of what needs to happen that month. All colors are customizable, so if you’re into personal branding, knowing your hex code colors will come in handy, and will make your calendar absolutely gorgeous!
Other thoughts…
You can also choose which calendar things get posted on, so if you have to manage different calendars between family members, this is an excellent way to sync everything together in a stylish way.
I’m loving my calendar, and it has made it so easy to consolidate a lot of things I would have created in Evernote or Notes, or even emailed to myself, into one single app that integrates with my existing tech. So, if you’re like me and need alerts but really enjoy drag-and-drop calendar planning (and STICKERS!), then be sure to check out this app. I’m diggin it! I think you will, too.
Finally, just a quick note on how I found this gem of an app. I stumbled on it from a Facebook ad post, and was instantly hooked. Sometimes those ads really pay off with a click!

Blush Plush (Aspyn Ovard) Lightroom Presets
New! Blush Plush (aka the Aspyn Ovard) Lightroom Presets will help you curate a beautiful, luxurious Instagram or social media feed for your photos.
Features and Favorites: preset 11 will help you correct over-exposed whites and warm up the skin tone (perfect for overly bright scenes). Preset 1 (featured in mother/daughter image) is one of my favorites for all-around application.
I hold a strong admiration for lovely Instagram feeds like Aspyn Ovard. Perfectly curated, consistent, and the same tones and temperatures for each and every photo. I’ve had some requests for a Lightroom preset set that allows you to get the same look and feel, and today, released the Blush Plush set.
There are 11 presets that vary. #11 (referenced in the features and favorites paragraph above) is one of my favorites because sometimes, when you’re outside, the light is so bright that skin gets washed out or the white balance is so off that you almost think it’s unredeemable. Alas, it CAN be corrected with #11. Preset #1 in this bundle is my favorite all-around and universal preset for this bundle. But I also am loving #5 and #9, as well.
You’ll have to let me know how you like them, too!

Pinning Others’ Pins on Pinterest
There’s been a decent amount of debate recently on various blogs about whether or not, as a Pinterest marketer, you need to pin other peoples’ and brands’ pins.
Some say, “yes, but no”.
Other say, “yes”.
And there’s a rare few that say “no”.
As an expert with Pinterest marketing, and having written the #1 preferred book on the topic, I’ll put this matter to bed for you once and for all and support my position on this with reasons.

pinning others' pins: why?
There’s been a decent amount of debate recently on various blogs about whether or not, as a Pinterest marketer, you need to pin other peoples’ and brands’ pins.
Some say, “yes, but no”.
Other say, “yes”.
And there’s a rare few that say “no”.
As an expert with Pinterest marketing, and having written the #1 preferred book on the topic, I’ll put this matter to bed for you once and for all and support my position on this with reasons.
The answer is absolutely yes. You do need and will want to pin others’ pins and not just your own. And there are a multitude of reasons why you’ll want to do this, even if you’re feeling insecure about sharing your competitors’ pins. And, I’ll give you a few options to help you boost more sales out of your pinning activities if sharing your competitors’ pins is what’s really keeping you up at night.
1. Community Versus Selfish Behavior. Pinterest is all about sharing ideas. Not just expressing your own and pinning all of your products like Pinterest is your personal virtual brick and mortar store. This is a community of idea finders and people who generate ideas. It’s built on the backs of creators with a sense of photography and imagery. Bottom line, it’s selfish to only pin your own content and not pin others’. In addition, it’s also selfish to pin others’ out of a sense of obligation rather than to give your audience a curated collection of options for ideas.
There’s a few bloggers out there (who shall remain unnamed here) who only pin others’ pins out of a sense of obligation. The “because I have to otherwise I’ll get marked for spammy behavior” type blogger. That’s not the attitude that you want to have with Pinterest. And, honestly, I see them failing with their long-term strategy, most of them having under 500k monthly viewers. These are bloggers I block once I know that they behave this way. Why? Well, let me ask you this. Would you want to re-pin someone’s pins knowing that they have no real interest in yours for selfish reasons, and that they won’t be re-pinning your pins? Probably not.
2. Decreases the probability of being discovered via boards. You need to know something that is true for each and every account on Pinterest. Not all of your pins are going to be popular. Someone or some brand is bound to have more popular pins than you. And they’ll probably have some terrific ideas that you could share with your audience, too. Not to say that your ideas and products are not as equally good, but you’re not going to be everything for everybody. Having a collection of great ideas, images, and pins only increases the probability of being discovered based on use of keywords and image use. Once a Pinterest user finds a pin they like, and it happens to be on your board, they may follow your board, even though the original pin wasn’t yours. You had just re-pinned it to a relevant board.
The collection of relevant keywords and images is what matters for board discovery and increasing your odds of boosting your online sales. Pinterest is not running its platform based on the intensity of the use of the keywords. Rather, a collection of them for board discovery. The more keyword combinations that are relevant to that board the better. And other peoples’ pins help you gather those combinations together by providing an array of possibilities and ideas on that particular board.
So that super popular pin of a competitor? Feel free to share it on one of your relevant boards. You’ll start gaining traffic and followers of that board and thus, increase your chances of having your products and services discovered.
3. Sharing Signals Confidence. Nothing screams confidence and security with what you do and create than sharing the work of others, too. Confidence sells, right? Let people know you’re comfortable with sharing your competitors’ pins by re-pinning. I love sharing some of my competitors’ products. My audience deserves to know about all their options – not just my own. I’d prefer to let my customers to make a well-informed choice that is to their benefit. It’s their money to spend.
4. Idea Generation. When you share more of others’ pins, Pinterest is going to show you a plethora of other pin ideas based on what you pin and share. I love this. Why? Because it keeps me sharp as a creator and lets me know what others are developing. Some of my best ideas have come to light after having blended a bunch of concepts together. I think you’re going to have a much better blend of pin ideas coming in your feed when you share and re-pin others.
5. Feeling Good. You’re going to feel good about yourself, contributing to a community. You might just make someone’s day. You might make someone’s entire financial circumstance better by sharing. Sometimes, all it takes is to have a pin re-shared on the right board, in front of the right audience, at the right time. Be a helper. We’re all out there, blogging away, trying hard, and paying for those baseball jerseys and Girl Scout cookies. This is just another way to help others. So I’d encourage you to do the “right thing” and change your mindset to sharing other pins and not just pin a bunch of your own.

What are the best schedulers to use?
WANT TO KNOW WHICH SCHEDULERS I USE? YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED...
It took me a long time to realize the truth: you don’t necessarily need the most expensive schedulers to get what you want posted effectively, and with ease. And… you can save time with one specific feature that few schedulers offer. When I think about all the time and money I wasted setting up and trying out various schedulers…
(head to desk moment)
…oh that hurt.
Listen, from a blogger who has invested hundreds into Sendible, has used HootSuite for various clients, Sprout, TweetDeck, Buffer, Edgar, etc. there have been only two that I have stuck with long-term for my own accounts. (I feel like I’ve literally tried them ALL out, and sometimes within 30 seconds I know if it’s going to be a good fit or not).
One is SmarterQueue, and the other is, obviously, Tailwind.
Why these two? What makes them so special?
It’s all about the loop. I’ll explain.
What I do (or attempt) and use for scheduling content
When I resolve to use my schedulers as I should (I took a big, long break in 2019), looping posts, pins and content with a scheduler builds the business and grows the email list. I tend to keep things evergreen, using posts and content that fosters grow while weaving in new content as I publish.
Obviously, evergreen content is key for Pinterest, so that comes naturally. But from time to time you may need to schedule time-sensitive promotions and that’s where SmarterQueue can help (even with looping campaign pieces).
I tend to use schedulers more when I’m going to be busy with some writing projects. (Uh, I have another book coming out soon). As part of my resolution for 2020, I’m “resolving” myself to using my SmarterQueue scheduler more consistently with the upcoming writing projects.
Honestly, I’d rather be writing than posting, and not have to worry about creating posts to schedule, so SmarterQueue and Tailwind are two fairly inexpensive systems that help me accomplish goals to get the writing done. Instead of having to upload new posts and schedule new stuff all the time, I can loop content and gradually weave new stuff in when I have a moment.
But I know that from time to time you might want to see what I find useful or something new in the shop, and that’s when I think sharing and being present is important.
Thoughtful, balanced scheduling keeps the traffic coming in from all channels, even though Pinterest is my #1 source, and allows people to pick their favorite channels and still hear from me. (Although I tend to be an introvert.)
By doing this same thing, you can please your existing crowd with new content while sticking to content you know works and converts. SmarterQueue also gives you an opportunity to mix up the media automatically on re-post. Many schedulers do not feature a loop, and require you to either post/schedule/upload new content all the time. Just speaking from experience, this can be a huge time suck and waste of it, as well.
I tend to schedule things in bulk that I know are appropriate for the time frame, celebrate the various holidays I like to mention (even National Popcorn Day), and keep my audience interested. I know that scheduling systems are a matter of personal preference and based on one’s own personal/business needs, but if you are looking for a recommendation and want to know what I use and why these two work for my own blogs, give both of them a try. (When you click on the links you’ll receive a free month or credit on me at no extra cost to you.)
Why they’re super fly
SmarterQueue is cool because it helps you achieve balance in content by segmenting post type (articles, your own blog posts, promotional, tips, questions, etc.) via color tabs, and it’s perfect for more visual users so you can see your blend of overall content. I’ve written a lot about Tailwind and how it’s the perfect tool for Pinterest in the Pinterest Marketing book, but just in case you’re out there, pinning posts to Pinterest and not looping them, know that your Pinterest game could get so much better if you started looping with Tailwind.
I use Tailwind exclusively for Pinterest, and SmarterQueue for everything else. These two systems together are my dynamite duo. I like to keep things simple, cost effective, and be able to spend my time creating rather than working “on” my business.
So if you are the same, and are looking for a duo to help you grow your traffic, achieve balance with posts, and do less “scheduling” by looping more of your content, these two software apps will do the job. Highly recommend both.
