Anybody Can Be A Poet

Anyone can be a poet. It's just words carelessly tossedOn to a page to make moods seem monumental,To carve metaphor out of the mundane. There is nothing artful to it.Rhyme and reason mean littleWhen anyone can throw a verse together.Hey; poetry doesn't even have to rhyme! You can sprinkle alliteration into every line,Use dissonance to define your coupletsAnd make mockery of punctuation, orGuess where you think words should naturally stop.Talking about why a poem is a poemTakes far long...

Tainted By Our Choices

Tainted By Our Choices

Meet Jack. A successful environmental officer working within an industry that is so very far from his childhood dream of saving the planet, that he no longer recognizes himself. How he’s found himself in Houston, Texas, where he has no one, and nothing but his work for company, he tells himself repeatedly he doesn’t know. But when the place that became home had the heart sucked right out of it, and all around him was the remnants of a li...

Pond Water

He can’t grasp his fingers around the deck, the wood of it slippery with mildew and slime. Oliver’s head drops beneath the water surface again and he forgets to hold his breath, surging upwards and gasping for air. The noise of him splashing around ricochets out across the pond behind him, its depth bottomless, and no banks to swim to on the other side. He flails again, his foot striking one of the rotten deck posts and in doing so pushing him further out.

Why did he think to come to this pon...

Hiking Trivia

(set over a bank holiday weekend in 2012)

“So when we get to the summit, we’ll stop for food, and a bit of a break, then start the next quiz,” Charlie says, which of course has Dexter squeezing Raife’s hand, and Kate looking at him in horror. Yes, Charlie is his brother, but that doesn’t mean he has any control over his antics. They all did agree to come here, no matter how much apparently some of them are wishing that they hadn’t.

“Oh, that’ll be fun for sure. It’s not like we haven’t...

Wisdom

Where did you pick up that skill?
Loving the sound of your own voice?
Was it something instilled on you from birth
Or a character trait selected by choice?

I hear you now. Shouting down the room
Because only you have things to say,
Good things, words of value, knowledge
And wisdom. Your way is the only way.

But if that mouse in the corner
Would squeak loud enough to be heard
For one minute, maybe, just maybe
Common sense could be revered.

I’d rather hear his words,
And the timbre of his...

By Moonlight

(set sometime in 2015)

When Dexter wakes, he reaches out without opening his eyes expecting for his hand to connect with an arm or hip. Instead, the bed beside him is cold, and the duvet is tucked in all around him. Raising his head, Dexter forces his eyes open looking around the room as they adjust to the dark. When Raife isn’t anywhere to be seen Dexter reaches for his phone, seeing it is just after one.

He knows without even having to wait to check that Raife is in the house somewhe...
