Deception

It was a golden afternoon, with pleasant time to kill.
She planted a diversion in fear of her secrets spilled.
Belated realisation dawned, so big, star bright, and bold:
She says more than she means to with the words she leaves untold.
Transparency through double-talk, her methods to deceive,
Rejection terrifies and leaves her nothing to achieve.
So what she said, it once was true, in that there was no lie,
But that was then, and this is now; to that she said goodbye.
Bear with her while she fools herse...

Raife and Dexter Are Getting Married

Raife and Dexter Are Getting Married

Raife and Dexter are one of those couples who make lonely people reach for a bucket of ice cream and watch Bridget Jones for the hundredth time. They also just happen to be getting married, in the most perfect of venues, surrounded by their closest family and friends. Life couldn’t be better for them. They have good careers, a beautiful house, and still make heart eyes at each other because they are so ridiculously,...

Revenge

He’d planned his revenge for days, pretending that he had forgotten The Incident, when really, it was all he thought about. Maybe there was a touch of childishness about it, and there was more than a pinch of jealousy. But if he focused on getting Nathan back instead of why he felt the need to get him back, then, well. Everything would be okay. Probably.

Mark stands at the top of the stairs, waiting for Nathan, his housemate of three years, to show his date in. He’s sure he just heard the fr...

Post

The post goes viral on a Wednesday morning, sometime between seven and eight. He’s not sure what analytics would have to say about optimised timing, but has far bigger things to think about now.

He used to love memes. But now it’s his face accompanying who knows what awful version of the thing it is today, he’s distinctly against them.

He clicks the bookmark for Twitter, holding his breath for whatever delights he’ll have to face today. 78 notifications, 14 direct messages; not so bad. H...

This

Look. There is no easy way to say this.
This devouring need; I can’t downplay this.

You’re in me, deep; I need you closer still.
Where you end, I begin. Can’t betray this.

Look at you. You steal my breath, you make me
Ache with want. A wick that won’t burn away? This.

I need you. I am consumed by your love
Anyway, so have me. Don’t delay this.

You fill me, and engulf me. So take all
Of me, E. I am yours. Every day. This.

Ton

“Your dog weighs a ton.”

Gavin looks in the rearview mirror and smiles hard for the sight of John grappling with Forbes. Forbes is loving the new company, the new attention. Gavin’s mum even offered to sit in the back with Forbes when they picked John up from the station, but John had refused. Gavin catches his mum’s eye and sees her amusement, sees how badly she wants to comment.

“You’ll get used to each other,” is all Gavin says.

They’ll have to. John’s moving back home for work and ...

Bomb

The bomb dropped on a dreary, miserable Monday. Some said they felt the tremors of it beneath their feet for hundreds of miles around. Others had more rude awakenings since it landed on their homes. No announcements were made. No emergency services showed up. No one claimed to be the source of it either.

Theologists would argue for centuries that it was a gift from above. The bomb changed you, whether you believed or not. The moment it exploded, thoughts became kinder, words became softer, k...

The Only Thing That Ever Made Sense

Navy vet Aiden Cadotte might just be firefighter Beto Cepeda’s undoing. Beto thought he had left him in the past, both on the joint base they operated from in Iraq and in the parts of himself Beto has tried to deny. But when Aiden shows up while Beto is on a call with his crew, Beto is transported back to a time when he wanted things from Aiden he could never let himself have. What is stopping him from having those things now?

Beto is. Because despite Aiden’s unwavering patience, theirs i...

Him

He loves him.
It crept up on him slowly,
Seeping into his every pore and thought,
And now,
He doesn’t know how to be without him.

He needs him.
The idea of not having him here
Is a crippling fear,
Stifling like being trapped in a world
Where there is no air or light.

He wants him.
That ache that never leaves
Whether he is with him or alone isn’t pain or agony to be vanquished by any pill.
It is the simple act of part of him being missing,
Only soothed and made whole when he is near.

He has him....
