Winter Musings

Emerald and peridot fade into topaz and russet, and soon there is nothing remaining even from them, bare branches stretching tall into the sky against a backdrop of sapphire and crystal. Mid-winter leaches colour from everything yet need not be bleak. There is feasting, there is family, there is fruitfulness, the promise of new life, new beginnings, new dreams. No good story is a smooth slip between beginning and end; life is the bit in the middle that makes both ends meet, that makes it wor...
Imagine
Imagine the stories a tree could tell.
The dogs who think it’s a latrine.
The kids who use it as a climbing frame.
The lovers who think beneath its canopy is
The perfect place to show their love.
The tree is all of these things,
And it is none of these things.
Born to grow old slowly,
To watch over this world.
To be a part of it,
And also somehow beyond it.
Mystical,
Magical,
Regal in how it just stands tall.
The Tree Of Life is even more enigmatic,
Its roots deep in all faiths of the world,
Connecting afte...

Turn Out The Light

Turn out the light.
Leave me stumbling in the dark.
You’re not mine to cling to.
I’m no longer your problem: I let you go.
Turn out the light.
You don’t have to feign interest
Or pretend you’re listening any more.
Your life can return to as it was before.
Turn out the light.
I was never much use anyway.
Dishonest in how I was feeling
Because the alternative would send you reeling.
Turn out the light.
If I can’t see, or hear, or know you,
Then you will no longer be burdened by me.
Life will soon...
Raife and Dexter Are Getting Married

You can read a little about this story at Profile Critics!
Raife and Dexter are one of those couples who make lonely people reach for a bucket of ice cream and watch Bridget Jones for the hundredth time. They also just happen to be getting married, in the most perfect of venues, surrounded by their closest family and friends. Life couldn’t be better for them. They have good careers, a beautiful house, and still make heart eyes at each other because they are so ridiculously, sappily in...

To Forget

Rebound sex is supposed to be messy. Sweat stained sheets and spit-slick lips, no thoughts other than want, no feelings but release, a momentary pause in the heartache to remind that life goes on.
This bar, just the right side of sleazy, is perfect.
A room thick with bodies, the heat from the summer sun so heavy that the atmosphere in the bar feels almost smoky, and liquor on tap to smooth the way for getting exactly what you came for.
A wall of sound that is the disembodied c...

In Response To Nitesky – To Begin With

Will your soul come back to me?
Was it ever with me in the first place?
I’m clearly remembering things wrong,
Or running the wrong race.
And so, I let you go,
Without the thought of getting you back,
Because you were never mine to begin with,
And there are too many things I lack.

Things I Like: Rhyming Dictionaries
Unless you have ingested an entire dictionary, the chances are, if you’re writing poetry, you’ll be mid couplet and need to pause when thinking of what rhymes with what. I can see your thinking rhyme-y face right now because if I was to look in the mirror, that is often my face. We all look very lovely! But let’s do something to keep any rhyme-related frowning at bay. Rhyming dictionaries are beautiful friends who help you come up with suggestions that make all sorts of sense even if you didn’t ...

Not Worth

You are not worth all of those tears spilled.
Tears so numerous they’d need a desalination plant to make them potable.
Tears so plentiful that without sandbagging, the river would burst, unstoppable.
And yet, those tears fall still.
You are not worth all of those sleepless nights.
Tossing around ideas for planned conversations.
Turning over memories like toasting marshmallows, mistaken
By the gravity of the moment, rose-tinted sight.
You are not worth all of this constant pining.
Wistfulness ...
