Winter Tales – Stove

Hello! Throughout December there will be a series of stories based on these words. Happy reading!

These stories are all going to be about the same couple: thanks to the beautiful people at Character Generator, here is what we know about them:

Matthias Platt is a 30-year-old plumber who enjoys playing rugby and listening to music. He is affectionate and generous, but can also be very quiet and a bit self-conscious. He has a severe phobia of clowns. Physically, Matthias is in pretty ...

From Across The Hall – 30

“Can I walk you to your bus stop?” Sam asks when another half hour has passed, and he starts to worry about Ruben getting home.

“You don’t have to, but you can.”

Sam nods, standing and taking their tray back to the counter, then waiting for Ruben to follow. “Which way?”

“Just a couple of minutes back towards the shopping centre.”

“Will you be drawing tonight?” Sam asks. Ruben tells himself not to read anything into how close they are together as they walk.

“Probably not.”

“That...

Sunshine

He sleeps in a ray of sunshine, tracking the movement of its heat across the carpeted floor. It’s an arduous task; one paw outside the warm zone and he has to roll over, or at its very worst, actually get up.

Sometimes the clouds seal that heat altogether, and no amount of glaring at that greyness overhead makes any difference. Still, at least it’s not raining, or that worse abomination, snow.

He stretches, giving up on the heat and instead seeking out food. His bowl is full of fresh bisc...

From Across The Hall – 29

“Don’t you feel a little guilty come here considering where you work?” Ruben teases as Sam holds the door open for him at the coffee shop.

“Not even a little bit,” Sam replies with a soft laugh. “It’s good coffee. And they make the best pie. And look; there’s still a couple of slices. Would you like some?”

“I would.” Ruben gives his order for coffee when prompted to then finds them a table, telling himself he is not nervous.

“So, tell me. Where was your favourite place to visit?” he ask...

From Across The Hall – 28

“Maybe we could trade stories,” Sam says then, and the look of surprise on his face tells Ruben he’s blurted it out.

“Stories?”

“About the places we’ve been. Or art, or something. Coffee.”

Ruben’s heart gives a flutter for the nervousness on Sam’s face and the way he winces at his choice of words. “We—”

“I don’t mean trade stories about coffee,” Ruben adds frantically, ducking his head again. “I mean, with coffee. Over coffee. There’s a… there a coffee shop I like to go to just aroun...

Threat

The look Erdan gives him from across the ice is one of threat, putting all the hair up on the back of Onan’s neck. Onan pretends not to see, eyes forward as he continues his lap around the rink. The whoosh behind him warns of Erdan coming. Onan takes a wide side step and hears Erdan swear under his breath when he almost topples. Then Erdan falls into stride beside him, matching Onan step for step as they skate.

“Can we not do anything without trying to out-compete one another?” Onan asks, spi...

From Across The Hall – 27

“I took a couple of years out to travel before I went back to studying, in case you were wondering,” Sam says then and tells him how old he is. Okay, so perhaps amongst other things, Ruben has been trying to work out his age.

“Where did you go?”

Sam starts listing all these exotic places, and Ruben starts to think that despite Sam being three years younger than he is, he’s seen far more of this world than he has. A slight swell of self-doubt sits hard on his stomach but he smiles through i...

From Across The Hall – 26

The map is more than necessary.

Ruben has never been to the university before. It is a huge, sprawling complex of a place, that without his hand-drawn map would leave him feeling daunted and thoroughly lost.

He finds Sam after only a few minutes of searching for him, the smell of paint and other art mediums hitting his nostrils the second he steps into the room.

“You made it,” Sam says with an enthusiastic smile as he stands up from the desk he’d been working at when Ruben came in.

Condemn

Condemn, they screamed in the streets. Condemn, they muttered under their breath from the galleries in the court. Across dining tables, and from the comfort of living rooms up and down the country, condemn was the single shared thought. No one listened to alternative arguments. No one really knew what they had been accused of. The law had found them guilty, just because those laws were twisted and manipulated to make it so that didn’t matter at all. They say that witchhunts are over, a product o...
