Bared And Armored

This facade he wears is not something thrown together one evening on a whim; it’s a wall he’s been perfecting ever since he discovered the power of hiding behind a mask as a teen. Mirror-rehearsed quirked brows and confident smiles when he’s feeling anything but, above layer upon layer of beautiful armor, adorned with kohl-lined eyes and glitter-tipped nails. Drawing eyes wherever he turns, with so few really seeing him.
Some days, when the sun is shining and all he sees around him is good th...
Stable
This is about as far from his life as it’s possible for Will to get. Gone is his open-planned office, the regular arguments about whose turn it is to make a round of tea. In its place there are rolling hills, green pastures, and more animals to make conversation with than people. Which he likes a lot. Far better than people any day.
Of course, there are exceptions. Like Emil, who winks then nods towards the stable before disappearing inside.
“You are my favourite volunteer,” Emil says, sm...

Sleep

I don’t want to sleep tonight.
That only means I’ll wake tomorrow
And that in no way seems to me, right.
Being here feels like I’ve stolen, or borrowed
A life that I’ll never rightfully own,
It’s never been a perfect fit,
And I’ve limped along, searching for home
In uncomfortable shoes, making the best of it
But knowing that one size fits all is a lie.
Too tight in places, too loose elsewhere,
With not enough interest to ask why
It’s the wrong shape. Defeated beyond care.
Let me sleep the endless sleep
A...

A New Experience

Meet college roommates Derek and Jordan. Jordan is frustrated and inexperienced; Derek quite literally gives him a hand.
This is NOT safe for work, just to warn you. For those of you who follow/have followed me elsewhere, you might recognise this story in another guise
Derek had never been good at getting the cold shoulder. He’d go out of his way to try to turn the mood round of whoever was annoyed at him, whether he felt they were justified for it or not. He’d spent all his c...

Clothes Horse

My reaction to the shirt on your back had nothing to do with you.
That particular plaid had magic properties:
Love, and lust, time teleportation too.
You were just a clothes horse of a memory
Who happened to cross my path
When I needed escape so pathetically.
But you could never in a million years compare to him.
No matter your words, your clothes, your voice.
He’s worth the risk of sanity. Of life and limb.
I’m sorry that I played such a convincing part;
Be smug in the knowledge th...
Bomb
The bomb dropped on a dreary, miserable Monday. Some said they felt the tremors of it beneath their feet for hundreds of miles around. Others had more rude awakenings since it landed on their homes. No announcements were made. No emergency services showed up. No one claimed to be the source of it either.
Theologists would argue for centuries that it was a gift from above. The bomb changed you, whether you believed or not. The moment it exploded, thoughts became kinder, words became softer, k...

At Three In The Morning
My attempt at the daily drivel things I’ve been doing on and off for the past few weeks turned into a sneak peek from the book I’m almost done writing, told from an alternative point of view. It’s just a silly domestic scene, spawned because my random word generator spat the word sneak at me. Enjoy!
Okay. So how the hell is he getting out of this without both revealing himself and making, potentially, the biggest mess he has ever made? At least in this room. Was it even worth it? All this...

Green

Green. The glint of an emerald, the gentle wave of a wind-stirred meadow, the lush sheen of a tropical rainforest after a storm…

Hello!
Hi!
What a year, huh? And it’s only Tuesday… time has lost all structure and sense, but hey; we’re doing our best, okay? So before anything else, Happy New Year to you all… belated, but also not, because five days in, and it still feels to me like we’re in March 2020. Or December 2019. Or some arbitrary Wednesday in the summer of 2017; who knows anymore?
Anyway. Hello!
I thought I’d do a little round-up of where I am with writing and blog things. I have scheduled some short stories, lin...
