Time seems to stand still as I ingest the bitter-sweet fruit which is offered to me. The power of my ancestors and the knowledge of the Gods overwhelm my entire being, changing me somehow into that which they are. I can feel my body undergo a transformation as each drop I swallow is absorbed in my organs. My muscles twist and pound against my flesh. I grow in height and strength.

I’m suddenly aware of all things around me; my senses are alive taking on a life of their own. I hear the thoughts of others--in this room and outside these sacred walls. A hunger I have never had before engulfs me. I want more, need more, demand more. I tip the silver chalice that graces my hands to my lips knowing the life it shares completes me and makes me whole. I am absolved of my past sins, washed away like a fresh morning rain; I am born anew under the hand of my Lord and Master. His blood is my blood, his thoughts become my own, his words are my words. Reborn in duty, sacrifice and blood I shed those things I once held dear to my heart as if they are nothing more than rubbish laid out on a street corner left for someone to pickup. Love for others outside this small circle of service is washed away from me as if it was a tide going out to sea never to be seen again by human eyes. It is replaced with an emotion I have no words for.

The transformation is complete.

Indifferent to what others might believe, I am he, holier than the most high. I am as my ancestors; I am a God in the eyes of mankind. I am Bagsu, the Son of Set, born not by his seed but by his blood making me Lord God over this Dominion and Chief Prime above all  others who serve He who is above all others. I am Bagsu; fear me for my wrath is upon you.

Quinn, turning his attention back to the lump of hostility sitting on his step, put his hands on his hips,steeling himself for battle. “All right, Miss McAdam….” Her black eyes glittered and flashed, meeting his challenging grin. Obvious loathing oozed from her every pore.  

“Don’t you dare touch me.” she said, her words reminding him of a snake’s hiss of warning before it sank it’s fangs into flesh. 

“Oh, I’m going to touch you,” Quinn assured her with a wag of his head. “As a matter of fact, I’m going to pick you up and carry you upstairs to my bed.”

 “I’ll bite your nose off. I’ll scratch your eyes out if you try it.”

He leaned down, his face inches from her nose. “I should leave you right where you sit. You can’t walk,” he said, pointing out the obvious, his eyes traveling the length of her, finally settling on the sight of her fat foot and her bandaged ankle. Deliberately, raking

every inch of her body with his eyes, his gaze traveled back up to her shoulder. “You’re right-handed, if I’m not mistaken.” Recalling how she’d carried the baby on her left hip, leaving her right arm free, he knew he had it right. “I doubt you can feed yourself, not with that sling on your arm and your wrist all bandaged up. No, Miss McAdam, I don’t think you’ll give me too much trouble. You see, I have what you hold most dear.”

 “You have nothing.”

 “Oh, but I do,” he said sweetly. “I have your brothers and your sister. Ah, you see, I’ve lured them into my lair with the promise of food and shelter. The way I see it, you have no choice in the matter, and I can and I will carry you inside.

Dorothy A. Bell bio. In the sixth grade I encountered the boy I would eventually marry. Over the years, he pestered, trying to kiss me. At sixteen, I kind’a got the hang of the kissing thing. We’ve been married for forty-eight years.
To combat severe arthritis in my knees, I took up aquatic exercise and became an instructor. After two knee replacements, I went to work on myself and lost eighty-five pounds.

Kris changed into a pair of his old sweats and wandered back to the living room. Wind rattled the windows, its shriek drowning out the television. She folded her arms around the sweatshirt, wishing the baggy pants fit better. She'd hitched them up as high as they'd go.
Eric handed her a pillow, his face inches away. "I wanted to apologize for that kiss the other day. I kind of sprung that on you."
Her heartbeat rocketed in her chest. "You don't have to apologize. I liked it."
"Enough for another one?"
"Maybe. It was so long ago, I don't remember."
His mere presence overwhelmed her, made words fly out of her mouth. He turned her chin toward him and grazed his lips to hers. Her knees wobbly, she melted into his embrace. They wound up against the wall, breathing heavy, clothing disheveled. Eric stepped back and cupped her waist. She knew he was waiting for a sign.
Kris straightened her sweatshirt and tucked a hair strand behind her ear. She had to end this before they made a mistake. "Good night," she said with great effort.
 If Eric was disappointed, he didn't show it. She appreciated him even more.
"Good night," he said. "If you need anything, I'll be in the other room."
"Thanks."
He kissed her again and retreated down the short hallway to his bedroom. Kris stood frozen. She shouldn't have come here. She wasn't who Eric thought. She wasn't who Nicole had thought, either. Kris found a movie on cable, preparing herself for a restless night.

Lilia blinked, and her gaze fell to a mournful fountain in front of the house. No water sprang from its center. She slowed the car. In the middle of the pool lay the shards of a statue.

A pull from the past gripped Lilia’s thoughts. A shadowy figure formed. Red stains marked the woman’s elegant body. Lilia recognized the pain inflicted by a needless death.

She fought the draw of the unresolved issues and reminded herself of the reason for her visit.

I’m sorry, but I can’t help you. She pushed aside the image in her head and turned off her car. I’m here to see a friend, not to solve a mystery.
