Winter is in the building!
Winter is in the building! Even if it can’t seem to decide whether to stay or go. Here in Atlanta we’re shivering one minute and throwing open the windows to catch a warm breeze the next.
I’ll admit our winters are mild compared to our northern neighbors. But we do get our share of cold weather, ice and, yes, on occasion, snow. Okay, no snickering over last January’s Snowmaggedon. Cities this firmly located in the Sunbelt do not invest in snowplows.
Growing up on the west coast of Florida I’d never seen snow or even the change of seasons until we moved to Atlanta. This season practically demands hibernation. (Not a bad thing for someone whose work rarely requires leaving the house.) I’ve stocked up on chocolate, fluffy slippers, back up batteries and books.
Like most writers I’m used to spending more time with the people in my head than the living breathing kind. That’s why the chance to share news with you and other readers here and on social media means a lot. Thanks so much for stopping by.
While you’re here, I hope you’ll click around and stay awhile. In addition to excerpts, you’ll find readers’ guides, reviews and book descriptions. You can even register your book club and invite me to visit via Skype or other meet-ups. I’d love to have you on my email list so that I can share occasional news about upcoming books and try to let you know if I’ll be at an event in your area.
Thanks again for stopping by. I appreciate the company and your interest in me and my work.
Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy holiday season,
Wendy

What Color is Your Next Book?
I’m thrilled (I was going to say “tickled pink” but managed to resist) to tell you that While We Were Watching Downton Abbey has been chosen to help draw attention to the ongoing fight against cancer as part of the 2014 Read Pink campaign. Ten Beach Road was a Read Pink title in 2012 and I’m honored to be participating again.
2014 marks five years of Read Pink, which was created by Penguin Group (USA) to promote public awareness of breast cancer, breast cancer research and to support and recognize the contributions of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). Each year, Penguin’s Read Pink donation has sponsored 500 hours of research time.
Every book features a Read Pink seal on the cover, suggests sources for information about the campaign and its efforts, and urges readers to keep the conversation going regarding the importance of continued research to discover a cure.

While We Were Watching Downton Abbey by Wendy Wax, The Last Letter from Your Lover by Jojo Moyes, The Time Between by Karen White, The Witness and Sea Swept by Nora Roberts, Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker by Jennifer Chiaverini, A Hundred Summers by Beatriz Williams, Perfect Timing by Catherine Anderson, I Want to Hold Your Hand by Marie Force, The Heart of a Hero by Janet Chapman, MacNamara’s Woman by Lisa Gardner and Dream Eyes by Jayne Anne Krentz.
Please join me in Reading Pink this October. Help spread the word by purchasing the Read Pink edition of While We Were Watching Downton Abby or any of the other wonderful books in the program, for yourself, for a friend or in honor of someone you love.
I hope you’ll also join the conversation on my Facebook page. I’m inviting anyone who’d like to acknowledge their own or another’s struggle with breast cancer with kudos, a comment or an anecdote—with or without mentioning someone’s name—to please do so. I’ll be adding my own thoughts this month as well.
Wishing you the best,

RESEARCH & SERENDIPITY: The unusual and the lovely—PLUS a new contest
It’s time for another contest! This winner will receive a CD of Mermaid in You and one of the cool mermaid bracelets I fell in love with as I poked around at Bamboozle, one of my favorite beach shops on Pass-a-Grille. Like the ladies of Ten Beach Road, each is unique, colorful and is itself a sort of Do Over as it’s made using the letters from recycled license plates. They’re just one of the interesting and unusual discoveries I made while researching THE HOUSE ON MERMAID POINT. I hope you’ll enter for a chance to win it.
Other discoveries on the road to Mermaid Point? Tea Table Key in Islamorada stands out prominently because seeing it and learning it was a single estate made me realize rock star “William the Wild” Hightower would naturally live on his own island. My husband and I enjoyed The Conch House Heritage Inn in Key West so much that I had to share it and so sent Avery and Chase there for a weekend getaway. Good times at the Lorelei, Bud N’ Mary’s and so many other places all made their way into the book.
And the Nautilimo! From the moment I saw it I knew Maddie, Nikki and Avery were going to end up traveling in style. I couldn’t resist it! Can you tell that Islamorada and the rest of the Florida Keys found a spot at the top of my list of fabulous places I plan to visit again and again?
*Contest begins August 13 and ends August19.

THE HOUSE ON MERMAID POINT FIRST DAY ON SALE REPORT!
Quentin Bell said, “A book is so much a part of oneself that in delivering it to the public one feels as if one were pushing one’s own child out into the traffic.”
There is some anxiety in waiting to see reader reaction, but mostly sending a new book out into the world is a joyous thing. It doesn’t matter if you’ve published two or twelve, the excitement of knowing that what you’ve created will now be read and, hopefully, enjoyed is an incredible feeling. It makes all those solitary hours in front of the computer screen even more worthwhile.
THE HOUSE ON MERMAID POINT is now on shelves both physical and digital, and I’m thrilled at its initial reception. Plus, today, USAToday’s Happy Ever After blog called Mermaid in You, the song I co-wrote and 10th Concession recorded, “awesome.” Then I learned that the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance named THE HOUSE ON MERMAID POINT one of their twelve Summer 2014 Okra Picks; a wonderful and unexpected honor. (And they put it right at the top of the list!). And also out today, Southern Writers Magazine features a piece about me and my work in their July issue.
Last night, Bookmiser of East Cobb and Roswell, Georgia hosted a launch party and it was a blast. We had Ragamuffin Music Hall packed and all of us loved Ian Koteles’ live performance of Mermaid in You. I’ll be posting pictures soon but first I’m running off to FoxTale Book Shoppe tonight for a first day on sale celebration. Wish everyone could be there. Meanwhile, though, the performance video of Mermaid in You featuring Ian and his brother, Evan, is up and running and ready to be enjoyed.
I hope you’ll check out THE HOUSE ON MERMAID POINT and that you’ll stay tuned. There are more celebrations to come.

The House on Mermaid Point on USAToday.com
The House on Mermaid Point is out tomorrow. Don’t know if you’ve heard about the song I cowrote with 10th Concession, but there’s a piece at http://www.usatoday.com/story/happyev... talking about how I managed to write a song even though I can’t carry a tune.
To listen to or download the song, Mermaid in You for free:
