RECORD BREAKERS!

Phenomenal day yesterday as England beat their own world record to post the highest ever one day score.

481/6 off 50 overs smashed their previous best of 444!

Incredible batting display and cementing their position as number 1 ranked ODI side.

Oh, and we beat Australia at the same time…

Argentina 0 – 3 Croatia

I know I’m incredibly biased, but I did have a little chuckle to myself seeing Argentina lose 3-0 to Croatia last night.

So far it has been a tournament of surprises and maybe, just maybe it’ll be the year of the underdog…

I still think they will probably scrape through the group stages , but I have an inkling we may have a surprise winner this year. Iceland, Mexico and Russia are looking good…

I’m predicting a Russia v England final!!

You never know…

The Alienist – Cracking Netflix series

the-alienist-series-1-episode-3Just finished watching this cracking series on Netflix. With a stellar cast (Daniel Bruhl, Luke Evans and Dakota Fanning) alongside some very authentic 1896 New York sets, ‘The Alienist’ tells the story of crime reporter John Moore (Evans) and psychologist Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Bruhl) investigating a serial killer in New York during the late 19th century.

The show goes to great lengths in depicting the huge gulf between the wealthy New York socialites and the grimy tenement buildings where the majority of the population (and immigrants) were forced to live. For a show about a serial killer, the gore factor is reigned in and falls in line with the ‘stiff upper’ lip attitude of the Victorian elite.

As the puzzle unwinds over the ten episodes, we see the birth of modern-day forensic science (rudimentary fingerprint analysis and criminal profiling) clashing with the more brutal (and corrupt) New York PD. There are the usual red herrings and wild goose chases and in later episodes a number of curve-balls you really didn’t see coming!

There is great on-screen chemistry between the three leads that surely a second season will be hot on it’s heels.

If you have a spare evening (or three) on your hands, it’s well worth checking out…

Bright - Not as bad as the critics are making out

Image result for bright

Whilst the new Netflix movie 'Bright' starring Will Smith is far from perfect, there are enough ideas crammed into its running time to make it a decent watch and it is nowhere near the disaster the critics are making it out to be.

Similar in theme to the 1988 movie Alien Nation (this time involving Orcs & Elves instead of Aliens). The story tells of a world where humans and other fairy-tale creatures live side-by-side and much like today's racial tensions, the tensions exist between the different races. Things are not helped by Will Smith's character having to babysit the very first Orc (an unrecognisable Joel Edgerton) in the LAPD, something neither he or his department are happy with.

There then follows a standard 'chase' movie where our two mismatched heroes are forced to protect a 'magic wand' which is nothing like you have ever seen in a Harry Potter movie!

There are so many fresh ideas on show here that surely a TV series must follow, what is equally impressive is the quality of the production. For a movie released straight to Netflix this is no mean feat and potentially shows where the future of the movie industry is heading?

For a star as big as Will Smith to sign on, maybe like some of the characters on show here, he can see the future too.

Go check it out..

Stranger Things 2 - Better than Season 1?

Image result for stranger things season 2

It took a few episodes to get going, but Season 2 of Stranger Things ended incredibly strongly and was a step up from the excellent first series.

Like all sequels, our heroes are spilt up for the majority of the show until all the different story threads come together for the exhilarating finale. All the 80's staples are still there from Ghostbusters to Gremlins to Stand by Me and Stephen King's IT. There's a dash of Edgar Allan Poe in the form of the Shadow Monster and for someone who grew up with these huge 80's movies it was a pure guilty pleasure.

Also great to see some true 1980's stalwarts in the form of Paul Reiser (Aliens) and an actual Goonie (Sean Astin).

Not sure where the story can now go in Season 3, but the show is so fresh with an almost limitless supply of 80's blockbusters to draw from, I'm sure Stranger Things can keep me hooked for years to come.

Ozark – Netflix original series

Image result for the ozarks netflix

Another great series I have recently caught on Netflix. Really strong cast with an excellent performance from the ever dependable Jason Bateman.

It takes a few left turns towards the end, but keeps you hooked right until the finale. Similar to Sky Atlantic’s ‘Tin Star’ which, unfortunately, I gave up on after three episodes.

If you like your dramas dark, but darkly funny – then this is for you…

Really enjoyed binge-watching season 2 of The Crown on Netflix over Christmas. Really fascinating insight to the time.

Gonna miss the younger cast who are being replaced for Season 3

Definitely worth checking out…
