Book Review: Configured by Jenetta Penner

Dystopian novels have become something of a guilty pleasure for me. It doesn't help that Amazon keeps recommending more and more books with dystopian themes. I've finally gotten to the point where I think I've read it all. Yep. Which brings me to the review:

Configured by Jenetta Penner
My rating: ★★★★☆

In a future society, emotions are forbidden. The people are separated into three tiers of

Sometimes Gardening Gets Messy

There are two types of writers: Gardeners and Architects.

The Architects start out with a detailed outlined and character profiles before they even start a rough draft. The frame work goes up first, then the pretty prose is built on top of that. The benefits of outlining are that the writer knows everything that will happen ahead of time which really helps combat writers' block. Architects

Everything 90's is Cool Again: Tamagotchi

I'm a millennial, which necessarily means that I'm nostalgic for everything 90's. That's not entirely true--there are plenty of things from that time period that I'd prefer stay in the past (like the music and brown lipstick).

One of the many things that have come back is the Tamagotchi. I got one of the new Tamagotchi friends as a birthday present and must admit that I am really pleased with

Book Review: Numbers Game by Rebecca Rode

Guys, I have a problem.

I've been addicted to YA dystopian novels and have read way too many of them recently. Now, in my defense, I picked up Numbers Game a few months ago with full intentions of reading it while on vacation. But then I got a proof copy of my next novel, Quality DNA, and ended up reading that, and this book got shelved for a bit. But I finally dusted it off and read through

Total Eclipse

Thank goodness for NASA (photos for this post and website background are from them) for capturing excellent images of today's total solar eclipse. I did my best to get pictures using my phone and a cereal box viewer, but they aren't exactly high-quality images. That and where I live, we only got an 85% eclipse.

Since we didn't have the foresight to get the special glasses before they were all

Book Review: Stellar Detective Tales by Scott Markley

Stellar Detective Tales: The Hunt for the Living Shadow by Scott Markley
My Rating: 4 of 5

When I spied a fellow author at Galactic-Con, I took the first opportunity I could to slip away from my table and introduce myself. Scott immediately launched into his elevator pitch: A detective from the 1930's finds himself on a futuristic spaceship.

Damn, that sounds cool!

I love noir style

Selling eBooks in Person

I did a lot of research on how I could offer ebooks at live events. There are a few people who are so loyal to their eReaders, they wouldn't entertain the idea of purchasing a paperback. These readers insist that they will look you up online once they get home and will totally purchase your ebook, but there's no real way to know if they actually do. So instead of asking people to remember to

&%#*ing Dust Jackets

Although I do most of my reading on my Kindle, I still love the feel of a physical book. The smell of freshly printed paper, the weight of the knowledge held within, and the velvety smooth feel of the cover.

Something that most fiction hardcover books have in common is that they are adorned with attractive dust jackets. Wanting to follow the tradition of beautiful book making, I decided to

Poop Everywhere

I've been incredibly busy this summer--promoting my first novel, gathering together everything in preparation to launch my second novel, incorporating edits from my editor in a third novel, drafting a fourth novel, all while acting as the primary caregiver of my two small children. I'm really looking forward to the school year starting back up in September.

So naturally, I figure this week
