Recently I was commissioned to do a painting for a retiring music teacher. This was a fun project and one of my favourite things to do which is to paint something with special meaning to a particular individual. I added a little write up so the recipient would see my intention behind the piece's different elements. Now that it has been presented I can share it with you.
"The Second Act"
The conductor and string players represent the career being left behind.
The music staff blends upward into a flowing stream suggesting a transition into the next phase of life.
The outdoorsy scene is outlined to symbolize the retirement dreams and endeavours yet to be fulfilled.
The music notes floating upward signify the memories made in the first act - that being a career in teaching, being carried through to the second act - a blissful retirement.

Are you a SAHM or do you work outside the house? Either way, I think we've all struggled between wanting to be home with our kids, and needing to contribute to the household finances. As for myself, I think it's worth the sacrifice of income IF it works for your family and Mom can stay home. Or Dad....either one! But there are benefits for a working mom (outside of home) as stated in the article below.
Mounting Evidence of Advantages for Children of Working Mothers

A study of adults in 25 countries showed that having a working mother had some economic, educational and social benefits for children of both sexes.
