A Misty Day Out at the Remarkables: Matchstalk Figures Amidst the Snow

The Remarkables Ski Area faces northward and gets plenty of sun. But it is just as atmospheric in the mist. There are also lots of hiking trails in the area, and I talk about all that, and more, in this post.

Changing Times at Coronet Peak: From a cosy ski club to commercialism and having to make their own snow

In this post I talk about a visit to Coronet Peak, which started out as a club field in 1947 but is now commercial. I also talk about the old days when skiing was a way to get around and not yet a sport, and how it seems that back then the snow lay on Coronet Peak all year round. These days it's melting away, and the field has to use the largest collection of snow-making machines in the Southern Hemisphere, apparently. The cost of which is included in the price of today's ski passes!

Savaii: The Big Island of Smoa

From Upolu, I headed west by ferry to the larger but less populated island of Savaii. Nearly everyone lives on the coast, on a picturesque ring road, and it is very slow-paced. There is a huge mountain in the middle, Mount Silisili (1,858 m or 6,096 feet) and the next time I go back I would like to climb that mountain.

Into Ireland's West, Part 2: A little longer in Galway and then south to County Kerry and Killarney Town

The original Wild West, where the kings fought wolves and bears. More on Galway, its castles, and the Irish still widely spoken, after which I head down to Kerry and Killarney. I talk about Galway City some more, and then head south past Dunguaire and Leamaneh Castles, and arrive in County Kerry, which includes the wonderful town of Killarney and Killarney National Park with its famous lakes.
