5 Ways To Lift Your Mood When So Much Seems To Be Going On

Historic floods and wildfires, political fights and economic wars–Oh yes, and a new Covid Variant. If your eye is trained on the external environment, there’s plenty to stress about.  Yet, you have a choice.  You can cave to it or pause and take some time to lift your true spirit.  It’s easier than you think and feelings are contagious (according to research).  Yes, original child-like joy lives beneath the layers of human experience. You’ll be spreading a feeling of joy without even thinking about it even in the midst of chaos!

Time and time again, I’ve seen the human spirit rise above the muck rather than getting stuck in it. I remember a woman sharing with me the story of losing her adolescent son in a car accident. She described her life afterwards as a blackened, desolate forest that had been destroyed by wildfire. And then one spring, much to her surprise and without her permission, little tufts of green growth began to peek out of the dark and barren forest floor, and she began growing a new life.  Similarly, your nature is inherently resilient even when you’re not feeling it. Your body and spirit are inherently driven to survive and thrive; similar to all of nature.

Where can you find resilience?  Jill Bolte Taylor is a neuroscientist who suffered a stroke in her left hemisphere that disabled her executive functions.  In her book “My Stroke of Insight,” she describes that as her ability to function deteriorated, she began sensing a profound connection with the Universe that brought feelings of peace, love and joy.  This inner ecstasy was so powerful, she was tempted to lie down and enjoy it.  Yet, she knew she had to seek help or die.  Her mind eventually was able to dial the phone and babble in a way that brought help–she survived.  She now shares her message that feelings of love and joy are found in our right creative brain not through thinking.  When we overthink things, our mind chatter gets overwhelming in a downward spiral and we lose hope… but our deepest spiritual self is distinct from that.  Deep within our body intelligence, we know the truth about the resilience that connects us with all of life!

The following list offers 5 easy ways to activate your creative, emotional brain and the release of feel-good hormones for an immediate uptick in your mood… and they are grounded in neuroscience; thus, they work every time you use them!

Take a moment to immerse yourself in the feeling of receiving what they bring you…  stay with it until you feel a little teary…(Gratitude)

2. Take a moment to find the awe and wonder in your day…

Looking up at the night sky is an easy one… enjoy the view imaging all the stars and galaxies above that share space with you…  stay with it until you feel the awe in your body…

3. Put on uplifting music or a movie and become present to really hearing and seeing it…

Sense your mood on 1-10 scale before and after to notice the results

4. Take some time to be in nature

Whether it’s a walk or an outing to a park… Amazingly, science shows that the chemicals produced by trees and plants can have a healing effect and it feels clean and soothing… ‘Forest Bathing’ is a real treat in Japan and is prescribed for healing…

5. Read a guided RIM meditation

I close my eyes and taking a cleansing breath, I inhale through my nose and exhale through my mouth.  I take another deep breath and in exhaling, I let my shoulders sink toward the earth and settle into greater relaxation.  How easy it is to nestle into myself as I release any need to be “somebody” or to “achieve something.”  I am merely me, a body and spirit surviving in a world of many distractions and diversions.

Setting aside all else, I claim this time, and dive into the depths of my authentic self.  The descent is easy and natural as I shed any pretense of being a particular way.  I am what I am, I feel what I feel, I welcome it all and trust the process of being natural.

Settling into my center, I allow the feelings to flow–like turning the faucet and letting the waters of life wash away the residue of living.  Sadness, joy, anger, rage, jealousy, happiness–whatever comes rises to the surface and is embraced as a fleeting taste of life.  Each drop falls as a testament to being alive, to having the human capacity to feel, and to having the spiritual capacity to see beyond it.

All else is unimportant at this moment.  I am absorbed with the totality of who I really am.  I awaken to the diverse continuum of my feelings–joy and sadness–laughter and tears–fear and courage.  It is all me and it is not me.  It is life itself flowing through me with seasons and transitions.  With ups and downs.  With beauty and ugliness.  I welcome it all, and resistance melts away.  With this disintegration, space is created.  Open space, empty space.  Profound space to be Me.

I am as vast as the Universe and as deep as the ocean.  My capacity to experience life is pure and vital.  Experiencing it all, I sense the truth of my nature.  One with the one, I am imbued with powers to create, to heal, to transform.  How could I have forgotten something so important?  How could I have given up my nature to pretend I’m nothing more than my body?  I let the questions pass and embrace the essence.  Like all of creation, I too am magically imprinted with the capacity for miracles.

I am the soul who sought to be born in this specific body at this specific time.  I am the energy of itself burning like a star emitting a light for all to see.  I am the unique being who walks this planet with my special purpose.

I am Me… with all my foibles … and all my talents!

I am Me… a divine spirit inhabiting a human body…

I am mortal… I am eternal… I am a miracle!

And so it is!

Embracing Change: How to Step Out of Your Comfort Zone and Find Your Courage

Taking new steps and meandering into new pathways in your life takes courage. The journey of a hummingbird could inspire you to take action.

A while back, my husband and I discovered a miniature round nest adeptly adhered to a small tree branch overhanging our patio. Using binoculars, we saw two still and wide-eyed hummingbirds peeking out. Every so often we’d hear and see mama as she hovered to feed them.

A few days later, the nest was empty. Although we missed the vicarious joy of following their development, we were grateful to witness their launch into flight, the journey for which they were born.

Coincidentally or synchronistically, we witnessed in the same week our two young-adult children flying to new lands to begin new jobs. I love our metaphoric connection to Nature.

This mirror is so enlightening…

What can hummingbirds teach us? Amazingly, a hummingbird that’s just hatched has no memory of past migrations, only an urge to fuel up and fly in a particular direction for a certain amount of time, then look for a good place to spend the winter. They are fully capable of traveling astounding distances on their own tiny wings. Typically most hummingbirds fly non-stop across the Gulf of Mexico in the spring and then retrace their flight in late summer and early fall.

Feeling the warmth of the sun… I breath more deeply… and relax into myself and let out a sign of relief…ahhh… I know I am safe here inside my body… My eyes close gently and my inner vision turns “on”… my attention gradually settles down inside… into the center of my being… as I breathe in through this center spot and exhale out of my back, I notice how the waves of breath come in and flow out through every cell… from the top of my head to the soles of my feet… As I’m astutely aware of energy flowing… in me and around me… my imagination escorts me on a joyful hummingbird journey… In stillness, I rest and receive all the Goodness and satisfying nourishment of Life itself.

Taking my time… I notice how good it feels… as the warmth of the sun and the vitality of nature fills up my physical body… just like a stream of colored energy flowing all the way down into my feet and toes and continuing upward through my ankles and legs… up into my pelvis and abdomen… it fills my torso and chest… and my shoulders and arms receive the flow all the way out to the tips of my fingers. Up into my throat and face… filling my head and my brain until every cell in my body is recharged like a battery.

And I sense inside by body, an inner urge to explore. Moving my attention into this energy, I let it lift me up and out of the usual and into unknown territory that call me to it… mmm… as I soar, I enjoy sensing images of juicy new lands, uplifting thoughts and compassionate feelings, as my feel-good hormones rise quickly and my body responds with pleasure…

With this exciting new sense of exploration, I find a place to rest in my body where I’ve never been before… maybe in the space right between my eyebrows or the center of my heart or the spaces between toes… as I feel an immense joy of adventure…

Taking Flight Like a Hummingbird

Cheers to 2021!

This last year, we jumped the “normal” track and landed in uncharted times.  Yes, there were positives, yet our travels were pretty bumpy.  Most importantly, we remembered what’s really important and some were a surprise.


Now, you stand at the dawn of a blank New Year.  And, it’s all yours to do with it what you will!


You and I know when we have a roadmap of where we are going, we’re more likely to get there. This blog-meditation will help you design a roadmap for an extraordinary 365 days unfolding before you.


For years, I’ve participated with a group to vision the new year. It has been extremely helpful to see the images that spontaneously show up… and at the end of the year to realize how frequently they happened in real time.

Remembering Your Holiday Heart!

Yes, there is a Santa…

Recently, a client in a RIM® session went back in imaginary time to rescue her 4 year-old self from constrictive parents. As her adult awareness focused backwards, we asked for some additional support to come along for safety and guess who showed up…”Ho Ho Ho,” nobody else but Santa Claus!

Afterward, she said, “It sounds so silly… Santa Claus and all… Yet-I feel amazing… light and sparkly and absolutely FREE… I think I’ll keep Santa by my side all the time,” and then she giggled like a precious child! Whether your guiding light is Santa, Jesus, Mohammad, God, Abraham, another faith or maybe the simple yet profound intelligence of Life itself, remember your Source is always with you… this unprecedented yuletide, remember to hold the hand of the precious child within. …take a few moments every once in a while during your day to slow down and breath… As you inhale oxygen and nutrients into every cell, you naturally remember the gift of having a body that enjoys the natural sights… sounds… smells… of the season, no matter what!

A Thanksgiving Gift!

Giving Thanks for You!



I cherish the presence you bring to the world. Thank you for being you because no one else can. Sharing your unique expression is an important contribution.


Are you ready to talk turkey about gratitude? Just for a moment… allow yourself to pause and bring into mind the image of someone or-something that brings you great joy… (PAUSE-yes really do it) and notice how your-body immediately softens. When we focus-our attention on people and experiences that make us happy, we automatically activate the release of feel-good hormones.


A grateful biochemistry produces greater-physical energy, better health and more-resilience. When we expand our inner spaciousness, we have a greater capacity for compassion and love.  Similar to how the taste of a-tablespoon of salt in a lake has little negative influence while a tablespoon of salt in a cup of-water makes it undrinkable, the impact of our daily irritations is lessened-when they fall into a reservoir of calm.

Scared?

Scared?


Wes Craven, famous horror film director points out, “Millions of people may watch zombies on TV and in movies, but that’s manufactured fear. We don’t really worry about encountering the undead in our day-to-day activities.” Our current world, however, has become increasingly frightening with COVID, climate disasters and intense division amongst us.


The imagined fear of death is at the heart of what we call anxiety. And there’s a lot of that around these days.  David Borgenicht, co-author of the Worst-Case Scenario series suggests once we arm ourselves with knowledge of how to respond or actually live through a situation, our fears aren’t so scary… He reports that being stuck in a plummeting elevator is a common fear, although the odds of it actually happening are minuscule. On the other hand, once you-know “the best place to be is on the floor bracing yourself,” you-feel prepared to do the best you-can, which helps diffuse significant anxiety.  Similarly, when we understand ways to keep ourselves healthy and safe during this Pandemic, we feel safer.  We can make decisions about how much risk we are comfortable taking given the range of choices and their level of risk.  For example, I feel much less anxious doing things now that I know masks help contain virus droplets.  I have some control.


Anxiety at it’s worst is worrying about a situation, which feels potentially life-changing and yet not consciously-knowing how to manage it successfully. You end up in a blurry experience of needing to make a decision to save your life, yet you-don’t know how.


As you-approach the night of the living dead, I send you a meditation to identify the source of current anxiety lurking in your body. Whether it’s worry-about health, relationships, money or something you haven’t consciously recognized, you have inner resources greater than it. Once your imagination identifies the specific fear, your intellect goes about solving the problem and anxiety fades.


This month’s meditation helps you diffuse current fears by turning A TRICK into A TREAT.

Allowing your eyelids to gently close… you take a big clearing inhale and

let out a deep, relaxing exhale… Feels so good to close out the outer world for a few minutes… moments that belong to you… just you… you have yourself all to yourself!

Relaxing at an even deeper level, you feel your attention settle-down into your pelvis…

Noticing how it feels to rest your attention on-the base of your spine, you sense-the whole inside of your body… all of it… every bit… until you sense-a fuzzy white light-that seems to fade in and out…

Giving your full-attention to this energy, you notice every detail of the fuzziness and the speed and pattern of the fading in and going out…

Calling in a virtual mentor to be with you in this adventure, a safe, loving and powerful figure appears in your mind-just like that…

Allowing whoever shows up first whether you know them or not… you sense-their appearance and where they are in relationship to you… R L front back above below

Noticing how it-feels to no longer be alone… you receive this-presence-as fully-as possible…

You and your-virtual mentor move together into this blurry white, flashing-energy… take a minute… As you are here… one word pops into your mind of what is scaring you right now…

As you receive-this word letting go of any desire to edit… you and your mentor settle more deeply into the energy of it-and allow it as best as you can…

As you are-in it… a new word pops into your mind of what you are feeling now…

Receiving this feeling fully… you sense a dynamic shift…

One more time, you move your attention into this word where an image of you having already faced this fear and thrived… magically appears in your mind…

You notice how this victorious you looks, walks, talks, and decides…

Step into this image and look out these vibrant eyes,

as you sense how your body feels now…

Feeling the support of your virtual mentor and looking out of your courageous eyes… you applaud yourself for facing this fear and succeeding…

Bloom-Even in a Pandemic-Here’s How…

What’s Wants to Bloom in Your Life?

It’s summer in Colorado… Baby robins are fledging… flowers are bursting with color and there’s lots of sunshine! It’s a time of lush regeneration everywhere.

There may be a Pandemic about, yet it’s an extraordinary opportunity to regenerate and bloom!


What’s germinating inside you? Like nature, we cycle through times of accelerated growth?  During the months of the Pandemic lockdown, I found myself sleeping in, walking in Nature and napping.  I didn’t realized how deeply tired I was until I was still enough to feel it.  As my energy regenerated, so did my creative urges; new products and program ideas started popping and a brand new plan for the RIM Institute is manifesting.


With work travel postponed till next year, my husband of 40 years and I also had more time together.  After an initial time of irritability as we sorted out how to share home workspace, I decided on a Pandemic goal to regenerate more excitement and fun in our relationship.  And it’s happening as I stay conscious of the goal and taking action toward it.


This month’s meditation will guide you through an inner sensing of the organic potential in every area of your life… home, relationship, work, health and play. You’ll get a deeper awareness of the natural next step in each. As my good friend Jack Canfield (originator of the-Chicken Soup for the Soul-Series) says, “Similar to how your car headlights show the way immediately ahead, you only need to see 200 feet forward to accomplish your long-term goals.”


I’ts quite easy to follow your inner GPS in this way. Sit back and relax as you explore your next step while enjoying the ride!

Notice… as you sense the state of your mind?… the feeling in your body?… the essence of your spirit?…Receiving this feedback… you become aware of the present moment with all it’s possibilities…And anticipation awakens… you’ll notice the energy of it in your physical being… It may feel like excitement or lightness or readiness or something totally different…However you experience it… easily give your attention over to it now… and as you do… you might even notice… it’s size… its texture… its color… it may take the form of something specific like a rosebud or a radiating sun… or something completely unique to you.

Whatever you sense… move your attention into it and receive it as best as you can…Here inside your depths, you sense the one stpe that is the next step regarding your HOME


Your imagination responds by sharing a knowing, a word, an image that gives you direction… take a minute and receive…And in regards to RELATIONSHIPS…

Ask… What is my next step? Right before your inner eyes, you sense the relationships that require action and what the next step is to be taken…

take some time to receive these spontaneous insights…

Sensing the area of your WORK?… words, thoughts, feelings and images instantly pop into your awareness and create a knowing of what’s next in your work… take some time…

Turning your attention to the area of your HEALTH… an image of you vibrantly health appears in a flash… You notice the immediate actions you’ve taken to create this health… Sensing how this healthy you looks, talks, moves and makes decisions… step into this vital body and look out of these sparkling eyes… feel the glow…


And what about RECREATION AND PLAYTIME?… Gleefully, your imagination shows you what play looks like as you are fully engaged in life… and you feel the child-like joy of being silly and having fun… you sense you are someone who enjoys life… no matter what!


Hmmm… how good it feels to see where you are going and know you are already there… All you have to do is take one step… Go ahead and imagine stepping into the full realization of all your insights. RIGHT NOW! and welcome the body sensation of SUCCESS…


You did it! Yes, you did… Feeling the energy of celebration… you know you are enough and that you have everything you need to take each successive step of

becoming more and more of your true Great Self!


Yes, you are re-generating yourself into ever greater expression of your true nature… greater appreciation for life… and greater love for yourself and everything around you…

Pandemic+Racism–How to Cope

How are you doing?


These unprecedented times are intense… A lot to keep up with!


And yet, the gravity of massive crowds protesting racism +  a global pandemic has weighted the scales to = a tipping point!  We have begun an important journey from feeling alone toward being together.   Our survival-instincts have awakened; a natural desire to protect and care for each other.  Open-hearted, sharing is the silver lining created by such tragic events.  We feel real… we feel alive… we feel connected.  I recently saw an article about Nevada protesters and police launching into dialogue after they risked a hug.  It gives me goosebumps just to remember it.


My invitation to us (you and me) is to allow this realization to guide us.  Coming together for the good of the whole is our natural neurological response.  Our nervous systems are designed to connect with others in caring ways and when we do our bodies grow healthier and we feel happier–no matter what our political, cultural, religious or educational differences.  In fact, research found that when college students watched videos of Mother Teresa helping poor children, the whole class received a boost in their immune system.  Even the immature young men who were making fun.


As I write this blog, thunder rumbles, hail drops while the sky is brightly sunny overhead–isn’t that just like life!  Flowing with inconsistencies… and Mother Nature never apologizes because that’s just the way life is…


Life calls us forth–sometimes the hero, sometimes the rescued.  In the end, they are the same…

Hero Meditation

Right now, close your eyes and with a deep cleansing breath relax down into your body… Taking a few minutes to rest here… you’ll notice something inside you calling your attention… it’s your hero.  Receive it as best as you can regardless of where it’s hiding in your body…  no matter whether it’s large or small…smooth or rough… warm or cool…


Noticing what color your attention gives it,  imagine being in that raw hero energy that you were born with… it’s always been there and always will… and right now you’re choosing to allow it to be felt… 


Notice the feeling of it as you immerse yourself… swimming in, around and into it… 


Rest in this place as long as you want… allowing the hero in you to be know and allowed as much as possible… 


From this place, gaze out at humanity with all it’s joys and sorrows… all it’s ups and downs… all it’s agreements and conflicts… all its brilliance and ignorance… all its grace and awkwardness… all it’s wins and losses… 


Noticing a feeling of generosity rising up from your core, you allow it to flow from you out into the world blessing all the inconsistencies and polarities of life… just the way they are… 


Your body responds and you notice how this feels… something feels good to united with what is… even though we may not agree with it… something within you knows you are part of something greater than you’ve ever imagined… even if you don’t what it is or how to do it… it just is… you just are… the way you are… hero and rescued all in the same…


And so it is!
