A Thank You Note

If I were to compare writing this book series "Miss Tree Tales" to something, I would say it has been similar to growing a tree.

I am forever grateful to my parents who sowed the seeds that cultivated a love of nature and the values of resourcefulness and conservation which in due course sprouted out as an idea to write this book through which I aim to plant similar seeds of thoughts in young minds. The enriching childhood experiences nurtured by my extended family in a wonderful habitat, where sustainability was not just a buzzword but was simply a way of living, provided the ground and space needed for this work.

Just as a tree needs roots, I am thankful to all the folks who have rooted for me, taken the time to read my blogs and articles, and presented words of encouragement and constructive feedback. It is not quite possible to name all but I have to mention the strongest supporters - my brother-in-law, Govindaraj, co-sister, Bindu, brother, Dileep, and sister-in-law, Bindya. A special thanks to Bindya who was the first to read the entire draft of this book and prompt me to move forward and branch out. The branch led me to my illustrator. A dull looking tree was transformed into a beautiful spring blossom by the illustrations and tips from Anjana, my tech-savvy artist cousin.

With all the storms in life, it is a surprise the tree still stands. Thanks to the strong supporting trunk, the steady unshakable resolve of my husband. Without his guidance to put the right amount of focus and balance into tasks and his suggestions for printing and publishing, the draft would have rotted away in a corner of our attic.

Now, you may think what else does a tree need? Light! This book would not have seen light without the lights of my life - my kiddos - my cheering squad always ready to lift me up by brightening dark and gloomy days.

It feels wonderful to finally put forth the fruits of the efforts and I am grateful to all my readers who have picked up this book. I hope you will shower your support adding in fresh drops of water to make the tree grow and also provide feedback to prune the tree as needed. As you fly away, I hope you carry some seeds of thoughts from this book and spread them wherever the wind takes you.

A Lovely Palm Leaf Rose for You

We were hurrying down the crowded street trying to get to an event on time when an old man sitting on the sidewalk weaving beautiful roses from palm tree leaves caught my attention. It looked exactly like the bouquet I had imagined in my book about coconut trees. I thought of the scene from the book where Mia makes a lovely palm leaf rose bouquet.

Mia hurried to the shed and gathered the flowers they had made earlier. She stuck each flower at the end of a coconut leaf stick and tied the sticks together with the rope she had spun at the rope-maker’s house. Voila! A lovely bouquet was ready.

“How creative!” said Nik.

The kids presented the bouquet to Mohan and Veena’s Dad who thanked them with a whole-hearted smile.

We had no time to spare but I could not resist buying a bouquet. I quickly asked the man the prices and the cheapest one in his display was $10. What a timing to be out of cash! I only had two one-dollar bills in my purse. And there was no ATM nearby. I said we'll try to be back later. I knew that was very unlikely as we had a packed program for the rest of the evening.

The man smiled and handed a single rose to my daughter. "This is for you sweetie," he said. He didn't ask for money and got back to his work. I handed him the two one-dollar bills, thanked him, and we ran hurrying to get to the event.

This man's simple gesture gave us all such a positive feeling and I wanted to share it with all of you. May your day and lives be filled with positivity.

From eWorld to a World without Electronics

In the first book in the Miss Tree Tales series titled Mighty Coconuts, Mia and Nik travel back to a time when there are no electronics. They experience the simple life of the past meeting new friends, Mohan and Veena, with whom they play numerous fun games and create interesting crafts with different parts of coconut trees. They are amazed by the resourcefulness of their new friends and realize how much fun they can have without any electronics.

The book is now available in most countries around the world in an electronic form in Amazon Kindle Store. Here is the link to the book: goo.gl/DnCNGl.

Once this info was passed to our circle of friends and family, we got numerous folks asking us how they can read the book if they do not own a Kindle. The rest of the post is about details on how you can get a copy and read the book.

With subtle hints in the book to stay away from electronics, it does seem a little contradictory to post how to use an electronic medium to read the book. Well, not all electronics is bad. Many times, going paperless has its benefits as it saves trees that are otherwise cut down to make paper. Without going into more pros and cons, here is a quick overview of how to read the electronic version of the book:

If you own a Kindle device, you need not read any further. You are already an expert in this space. If you do not own a Kindle device but have a smart phone or tablet, you can download the Kindle app on to your device and download the book. Kindle has apps for most devices and this option works quite well if you are comfortable with a smaller screen. If yes, you are all set and you too need not read this post any further unless you would like to.If you do not own an electronic device or just don't like reading a lengthy book on a small screen, Kindle also supports a reader for Macs and PCs. Here are the list of steps for installing and setting up Kindle Reader on a PC or laptop:Download and install the app from this link https://www.amazon.com/kindle-dbs/fd/... the Kindle Reader program.Go to Tools -> Manage Your Kindle. It will take you to the Amazon Kindle Store website.Login with your Amazon id. If you do not have one, you will have to go ahead and create one to proceed further.Search for "Mighty Coconuts" and go ahead and get the book (Thanks for your interest). Now, wait for the book to get downloaded. You should now see it in the Kindle Reader. Now, the only thing left to do is to read and let us know your opinion. Being first time author/illustrator duo, we would appreciate all and any feedback.  Just a few more things about Kindle Reader. You can adjust the font, text width etc and also go full screen. Note that this can sometimes make some blank spaces appear in between some of the illustrations and text. We are yet to explore and figure out if there are options to improve the picture/text alignment for various font/width settings. If you have expertise in this, please drop us a note at misstreetales@gmail.com. Our hope is you will read the book from beginning to end at one go. But if you need to take a break, you can use Tools->Bookmark to mark a location and then use Go->Location to go back to the place where you stopped.
Yay! You are all set! Sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey with Mia and Nik.

Happy Reading !!!
