Could Google’s AutoDraw Replace Design Fees for My Next Book?

Few topics are hard to comprehend with only text. A picture helps, since it is worth a thousand words. I am bad at drawing. I needed a fair amount of pictures for my book Cloud Is a Piece of Cake. I used NounProject. However, it came with a price. I didn’t want this expense on my next book. I bought books on how to draw. But I couldn’t commit time to it. Few days back I heard about Google’s AutoDraw. I decided to give it a try.

I made an attempt to draw the thing in my head.

Google already knew what I had in mind and gave suggestions.

How cool is that?
But, if you want to draw something like a person facing left and smiling. It won’t help you. But, this is a great start.

How we made it to popular on medium list

When I started writing on medium. I hardly got 100 views. But I kept writing. One fine day David Smooke noticed my posts. He added me as a writer in Hackernoon. Thank you David, otherwise I would have still been struggling.
The average views increased 10x.

When I got lucky it hit five thousand views.
This was good comparing to the time when I started. However, if you notice the recommends I got were very less.
Then I decided to write stories about what I personally experienced. My life didn’t have great adventures. So I decided to start one. I decide to build a start-up while I write about it. My first post in the series Building a start-up from scratch Pt 1 : Identifying the problem received 99 recommends. This was way high compared to my previous posts.
Then this happened

That is the story behind the post How India saved its internet from greedy corporations.
I submitted a raw post. My writing skills were not great. The editors of FreeCodeCamp polished it. They share the credit. This is why the title of this post is “How we made it to popular on medium list”.
In four days it received 570 recommends. Yes, it also made it to popular on medium list.

My point is it’s difficult to make it alone. You can take a smartcut by working with others.
Lookout for the leaders and see what they work for. Think of ways you can add value. Collaborate and they will help you climb the ladder.

Benjamin Franklin Though there were messaging apps before whatsapp they were not widely adopted by Indians. Skype and other apps required you to have an email id.
There were a lot of people here who didn’t have an email account but had a phone with internet connectivity.
Whatsapp only required you to have a phone number. Hence it was widely adopted. Skype and other apps didn’t reach this scale of adoption here. Even if I was on Skype or on the other apps my friends wouldn’t be on it. The only way to reach them was through SMS.
I hope this makes it clear.

How can my business benefit from AWS Pt 4 : Databases

In part four of the series. We will learn about Databases. Here is part one , part two and part three. Make sure you follow Hackernoon and me (Febin John James) so that you won’t miss the later part of the series.

Consider you are hosting a food delivery service. It would need you to maintain the data of your users, restaurants etc. So that you can fetch information like food ordered by an user, list of restaurants that are registered with you etc. A database helps in storing and querying these data.
Self hosting a database will require you to hire expensive database engineers. AWS takes the heavy lifting of maintaining database for you. You pay for what you use.
AWS RDSAWS RDS (Relational Database Service) helps you to setup relational databases like MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle, SQL Server, Postgre SQL and Amazon Aurora with a few clicks.
Relational Database are based on relational algebra. It allows you to link data from different tables. If your apps need you to maintain complicated links between different data. Stick to this.
AWS DynamoDBThis is a non-relational database. If you have huge amount of data , non relational database can help you achieve scale seamlessly. It is used by services like Lyft, Duolingo etc.
Some companies use both relational and non-relational databased for specific needs. Here is a comparison of both.
AWS ElastiCacheConsider you are querying email id of an user x. This query can be repetitive. So engineers invented cache system where once a query is performed the result is stored in cache. The next time same query is made, information is served from cache.
Cache is engineered to fetch information faster with less costs compared to a database. This helps improve performance of your application and reduce costs.
AWS ElastiCache allows you to easily deploy the cache system. This is used by popular companies like Airbnb, Adobe, etc
AWS RedshiftData warehouse is a relational database build for analysis. It helps drive business decisions. Self hosting a data warehouse is difficult and costly. AWS Redshift takes the heavy lifting of hosting the data warehouse for you. This also seamlessly integrates with popular business intelligence tools. It is used by companies like Pinterest, Nokia, etc
If you are interested in making apps on cloud , do checkout my book Cloud Is a Piece of Cake on Amazon.
You can also join my mailing list Cloud Computing Stories . I will use this to notify you if I write new stories or books on Cloud Computing.

Hmm, I have seen them restricting access to anything. They give the freedom to browse everything on the internet at a discounted rate. But, am sure they are planning something evil. Lets’ see.
