Gaucho Pants | What I Really Wore
The FAB Journey
It has been a while since I shared a post on what I really wore. So today, I thought I would focus on an outfit with gaucho pants. I have ended up with several pair of gaucho pants because they are easy, cool, and figure-flattering.
I don’t think I am alone when I say that I am over the skinny craze. Who wants to actually “feel” every square inch of their pants when they are wearing them? Yes, I like to look put together and stylish, but there has to be a better way to do it!

Gaucho pants can balance your proportions well. The gradual widening of the leg balances out those who may be pear-shaped. In my case, the width of the bottom matches the width of my shoulders, which creates more of an hourglass silhouette. While the length continues to draw the eye up and down.

Keep these tips in mind when choosing gaucho pants.
The top of the pants should fit well and lie close to the body; otherwise, the pants will add visual bulk.
Make sure the gaucho pants end only a few inches above the ankle to avoid cutting off the legs, which can make your legs look short and stubby.

I am crazy about these shoes. In fact, I like them so much that I have the same shoe in four different colors. I’ve heard of other people buying the same item in a range of colors, but this is a first for me. It all started with a black pair that I bought to replace a favorite pair that literally fell apart. Then, I came across a good sale at Dillard’s and bought two more because I couldn’t decide between the colors. Finally, I was at Dillard’s Outlet a few weeks ago and came across the fourth and final pair for way less than any of the others.
And, I must admit I wear them all the time. I love the look of a sandal mixed with the covered toe, which easily carries the shoe into Florida Fall. It’s the perfect shoe for put-together casual. Unfortunately, the Dillard’s style is sold out, but I found some cute ones here.*

Trust God
I believe my greatest takeaway from 2020 will be to trust God no matter what things look like. We’ve all waded through some deep waters this year. Typically, we filter our life experiences through a lens of the past…how did I do it then and what lessons did I learn.
But this year is one of unchartered territory… there are no past lessons to help us make sense of current circumstances.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
Thankfully, we have a God who knows the end from the beginning. I can trust God to lead me as I live in obedience to him…he will make crooked paths straight for me and for you.

Election 2020 | Pick A Side
The FAB Journey
I can still vividly remember the scene…a distressed call would ring out, “Moooooom,” followed soon after by the appearance of one cherub only steps ahead of the other in frenzied pursuit. Then, the account would commence….”Mom, HE blah, ba blah, blah” or “Mom, SHE blah, ba blah, blah!” Four eyes would stare up at me; imploring me to pick a side.
It didn’t even matter who did what to whom…in the end, it was always my job to piece together the truth, which was usually waiting somewhere in the middle of “he said and she said.” In the end, it was my job to restore order and find a way for both sides to remember the love and move on.
For way too many months, we’ve listened as the two political parties have earnestly tried to persuade us to accept their side of the story as truth, the only truth and nothing but the truth. Yesterday, we were then given the opportunity to cast our ballots.
Election day has come and gone…now, it’s time to figure out how to come together in unity; to love one another as God commanded us to do and move on.
When it comes to people..imperfect, flawed people…every argument has two sides and the truth typically lies somewhere in the middle. We should take a moment of reflection whenever we get to the place where we wholeheartedly believe that one side’s entire account of events is the unvarnished truth.
It’s Time To Pick A Side
Of course, when it comes to our faith, God’s truth is our one glorious exception! We can take him at his word and yes, we can pick a side!
You’ve read this far and now you’re thinking, “Is this it?” Come on Shellie, is this all you’ve got? My issues are God’s issues.
OK, I get that! So, let’s just take a moment to establish what God’s issues really are.

The two greatest commands are to love God and love your neighbor as yourself.
But, how can we possibly do that when we just aren’t feeling the love!? Thankfully, we have a secret weapon in this regard…the resident power of the Holy Spirit. It’s this supernatural power that sets us apart. It’s His love that compels us…
14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
Our natural inclination would be to circle the wagons with those who agree with our issues. That’s where we feel loved and validated. Why should we love people who don’t agree with us? The answer is both simple and simultaneously difficult to implement…we love them because Christ died for them!
God calls us to be salt and light in a dark world.
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
We as believers must get to the point where we acknowledge that our take on issues springs from the transformative work God has already done in our hearts. Consequently, touting our issues will never break through the darkness, but loving people who can’t see our side speaks in ways that rhetoric never will.
God has always called and enabled his people to love past their depth. It’s the compassionate, incomprehensible love of Christ that stops people in their tracks. It’s our love that breaks into dark places and draws people to a heart change, which in the end leads them to see their “issues” in a new way.
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Regardless of who becomes president of the United States, God’s side is clear…we are ALL sinners in need of a savior. The defining difference, the one that’s closest to God’s heartbeat, is that some of us understand and live out this truth, while others have yet to hear it or realize it.
Hopefully, this is a side we can all agree on.

Review of Newly Revised NIV Study Bible
The FAB Journey
I think we can all agree that we need something firm to stand on in 2020. Who can we trust…who should we turn to?
When we find ourselves struggling with uncertainty and raw emotions, the Bible undoubtedly provides the safest place for sure answers. What’s more, God’s Word can cut through our emotions to reveal our true attitudes and motives.
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Review of Newly Revised NIV Study Bible
You may be thinking, “Hmm Shellie, this review doesn’t seem to jive with your normal blogging content.” And to be honest, it’s not! I guess you could say my diversion denotes just how seriously I believe that we must prioritize God’s Word and the Holy Spirit’s guidance in this tumultuous time.
We’ve become a commentator culture…an event occurs or a speech is given, then it’s time for the commentators to circle around to explain and interpret what we just heard or saw. When it comes to the bedrock of our faith, God’s Word, I think each of us needs to figure out how to read and interpret it for ourselves.
When I was in seminary I learned that every scripture exists within the context of the story behind, within, and beyond.
Behind – What is the historical context? How would the original reader have understood the text?
Within – Where does a particular scripture fall within other surrounding verses? What is the scriptural context?
Beyond – How can I apply a particular scripture to my current situation?
The newly revised NIV Study Bible helps the reader to determine these important elements in their daily Bible reading or study. For instance, take Hebrews 4:12 as an example. The newly revised NIV Study Bible provides immediate context clues for the reader.
Chapter Introduction – I can look at the introduction to discover the theme of Hebrews, “…the absolute supremacy and sufficiency of Jesus Christ as revealer and mediator of God’s grace through the new covenant.” I also get a quick glance at the audience and the time frame in which the words were written.
Study Notes – The in-line study notes allow me to quickly determine the scriptural context of the verse. There I learn that verse 12 gives the reason why the reader should give serious attention to entering the rest that Jesus offers as opposed to the mandated Sabbath rest of the old covenant.
The layout puts valuable study tools at the reader’s fingertips. I also appreciate the addition of color maps, illustrative images, and reflective articles on key concepts within the chapters.
I have to admit that I’ve turned more and more to my electronic devices for everyday study and Bible reading…almost exclusively. However, I feel like God is calling me back to the printed page.
In fact, when I was looking at this verse in preparation for this review, my eye was immediately drawn to several contextual elements that I would not have bothered to search for if I was reading on my device.
How about you…have you also been lulled by the convenience and immediacy of technology? Do you crutch too heavily on other’s and their scriptural interpretation?
Don’t get me wrong, I still love to ease of searching for scripture whenever and wherever I am, but I think I’ll be adding the NIV Study Bible to my morning routine because I need God’s Word and direction more than ever.
I received this Bible for free as a member of the Bible Gateway Blogger Grid in exchange for an honest review. #BibleGatewayPartner

God’s Presence In Simple Things
The FAB Journey
I have become much more focused and aware of nature’s beauty since spending twelve weeks quarantined in my Manila high rise apartment. For 84 days, I could only experience nature from a distance…an image behind glass. Now, I find myself taking periodic walks just to breathe fresh air and admire the cloud formations as I stroll between moss-laden Florida oaks.
I never thought to do this before…to take intentional moments to admire God’s presence in simple things.
I asked my friend, Abigail from Serendipitous Discovery, if I could share some pictures from her blog because this is something she does so well. She has a gift for portraying the beauty of the everyday; of capturing a moment in a way that causes us to stop and take notice.
All photos used with permission from Serendipitous Discovery

Too many times, we don’t recognize God’s presence in our lives. We just assume that He’s left us to figure things out on our own when in actuality we’re just looking in the wrong places…
Maybe, we don’t recognize God’s presence because we aren’t looking to see him.
11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
1 Kings 19:11-13
Elijah found God in a place he probably would not have even thought to look. God’s voice came in a gentle whisper.
Think about one of your most intimate relationships. Most likely, this relationship was forged by years and years of small acts of love, not by a few grand gestures. Hopefully, we all can say we take time to recognize the small ways that we’re cared for and loved by those we care for and love.
I think I’ll stop right here…a short and simple post with a simple, yet profound message. If you look for Him you will always find God’s presence in simple things.

New Discovery – Nail Polish Strips!
The FAB Journey
Have you ever had one of those, “I must have been living under a rock” moments? It’s that moment when you realize you have been missing out on this awesome thing because you literally did not know it even existed? Well, that is how I feel about my new discovery – nail polish strips.
If truth be told, I can easily see why I didn’t notice this “newish” trend of nail polish strips. I can’t really say it’s new because it wasn’t even on my radar. Why?…because I have never really been one to do the whole mani thing until about two months ago.
Now, I love nicely painted nails as much as anyone. And yes, one might assume that nails fit with my interest in fashion and beauty, but I’ve always relegated them to the realm of admiration from afar…along with the habit of changing purses to match every outfit (nice concept, but not for me).

Why Have I Never Done My Nails Before Now?
As I mentioned, I really admire the look of nicely manicured and polished nails. But, several obstacles have always stood between me and manicured nails:
Self-painted nails inevitably end up smudged or nicked because I am too impatient to wait for them to dry.
Self-painted nails only last for a couple of days.
Salon manicures look awesome, but I don’t want to pay for them.
I never wanted to commit to a regular schedule of salon appointments.
New Discovery – Nail Polish Strips
I guess you could say my whole nail story changed a few months ago. I was scrolling through social media as part of my daily entertainment in quarantine and I came across a post by my cutie niece, Corri. She had decided to become a stylist for a product called Colorstreet.

To be honest, I ordered my first Colorstreet nail polish strips to support my niece, but it only took one application to make me an instant convert. I absolutely love nail polish strips because they answer every one of my previous misgivings:
Nail polish strips are 95 percent dry when you apply them, so you don’t have to mess with the nicks and smudges.
Nail polish strips last for 10 to 14 days.
One pack of Colorstreet nail polish strips lasts me for at least 3 manicures, which makes them very affordable.
I can apply them at home without going anywhere.
And, I have one additional thing to add to the list…
Applying nail polish strips is a great creative outlet! Each woman can go as loud or classic as she wants to with designs and color choices.
No, I’m Not Going To Sell Colorstreet, but I am hosting a one-time party!
As always, I am sharing something that I love and I think you’ll love it too.
I will be hosting a one-time Colorstreet online Facebook party on Tuesday, October 13 at 8:30 (ET). Corri and I will open with a short Facebook Live and then she will have some fun interactive posts, as well as, discounts and giveaways…woot, woot!
Better yet, this party will highlight Breast Cancer Awareness with two special designs! Two dollars of each of these sets go to support this worthy cause.

I would love for you to come…and the great thing about it is that you don’t even have to leave home! Click the link below if you want to join us. Oh, and make sure to stop by the event page before the day of the party. Corri will be posting some tips and tricks and she is ready to send free samples to anyone who wants to try-out Colorstreet for themselves.
I Want To Party With You On October 13!!
Or, if you aren’t into attending an online party (or you read this post after the fact), but you would like to check out the nail polish strips, just head straight to this site…
Just Let Me See The Nail Strips!

I feel like God has been renewing my hope in recent days. In fact, His message of hope has literally been at every turn. I received a card about it and now I have a t-shirt that reminds me of it.
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
Hope keeps me grounded when everything else in life seems so squirrelly! So, come on girls…let’s hang onto our hope!

My Favorite Hair Styling Products
The FAB Journey
You know you’ve done it. You read an article about the greatest hair product since the invention of electricity, then you go out to spend way too much on a full-sized bottle of it. Now, it sits gathering dust on your bathroom shelf. It delivered none of the stunning results you hoped for, but you can’t bear to throw it away.
How I wish I could recoup all the money I’ve spent on useless hair styling products over the years.
But, I’m glad to say that I’ve honed my hairstyling routine down to a few select products that I go to time and time again. So, I thought it was about time to share my favorite hair styling products with you.
My Favorite Hair Styling Products*
My hair texture is fine, which means styling products are essential for volume…fine hair also means that the wrong products can easily weigh it down.
We all want nice hair. After all, it sits right up there on the top of our heads for everyone to see! So, hair is an area I am willing to splurge on, but I would way rather go with less expensive products when possible. And, for the most part, I’ve found several affordable options that do a bang-up job.
Of course, I purchased all of these products because they are the ones I use every day in my own hairstyling routine…so let’s get to it!

Turbie Twist – I recently discovered this great little invention. This microfiber towel hangs right in my shower, so I’m always ready to wrap up my hair after shampooing. As a result, my hair stays smoother because I don’t rough up the hair cuticle with towel drying.
Generic Leave-In Treatment With Keratin (Sally’s Beauty Supply) – I pump a few squirts in my hand and smooth through my hair, avoiding the roots. This makes my hair a lot more manageable.
Generic Volumizing Root Lifter (Sally’s Beauty Supply) – This product comes with a unique nozzle that allows you to apply it directly to the roots. After applying, I run my fingers across my scalp from front to back to distribute it.
BB Volumizing Spray – Although this product carries a higher price tag, it really delivers a lot of body. I spray it all over my damp hair before blow-drying.
TRESemme’ Heat Tamer – Since embracing more gray hair, heat protection has become a necessity. I spray this styling product on the outer layers of my hair before using a straight iron.
*This post contains some affiliate links, which don’t cost you one penny. This just means I may receive a few cents if you choose to click on them or decide to purchase something I recommend.

Let me know if you decide to try any of these hair styling products and if they work for you.
Finally, I want to leave you with a nugget of encouragement to stash in your purse or pocket.
24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.
I’m so glad we don’t have to have our whole lives figured out every second of the day…aren’t you?! We may not see how things are going to work out when we are wading through churning waters. I’m just glad that God sees the bottom.

Little Black Casual Dress
The FAB Journey
This year has undoubtedly been the most casual one of my entire life. In fact, I would go so far as to say this little black casual dress is one of the dressiest things I’ve worn since March. Good thing I am the queen of smart casual!

I must admit that the little black casual dress plays a prominent role in my wardrobe…yep, I just counted seven in my closet. And yes, I’m always on the lookout for one more.
Why? Because they never go out of style and they’re oh-so-figure-flattering. I also love that I can change the mood of a casual LBD with a few accessories.

Yesterday, I was walking to my car and it occurred to me that the sun wasn’t beating down on my head; in fact, I was actually enjoying the stroll. It’s subtle, but there’s definitely a change in the air.
Will it stay? Are we actually entering Fall? Hmm, I can’t be sure as Florida weather is about as predictable as the 2020 headlines have been. You just never know what you’re going to get.
But, the unpredictability of tomorrow doesn’t mean that I can’t rejoice in the beauty of today.
the unpredictability of tomorrow doesn’t mean that I can’t rejoice in the beauty of today.

  Click To Tweet
34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Worry is an insidious thing. We get into a habit of borrowing pain from unexperienced moments. Things have been so bad…surely something even worse is lurking just around the corner.
I’ll admit this unpredictable year has given us more than enough to worry and fret over. But, in our worried state, we often overlook the fact that we’ve only got one shot at today.
So, I think I’ll go sit on the porch to enjoy the weather and hope for many more days just like it.

Feeling Put Out | Thankful For New Mercies
The FAB Journey
Wouldn’t it be great if every single day was puppies and rainbows?
I can remember my babies looking up with wide eyes as they asked, “Why can’t every day be my birthday?” To which I explained if every day was a birthday, then birthdays just wouldn’t feel special.
I guess I should take my own advice when I have days when I’m feeling put out…when things just don’t seem to go the way I think they should or wish they could.
It’s the “put out” days that increase my appreciation for God’s steadfast love and the promise that his mercies are new every morning.
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases:
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
Questions To Ask Yourself When You Are Feeling Put Out
Have I prayed about it?
This seems like a logical step, but all too often we allow our emotions to run away with our perspective before ever thinking to give God a crack at it.
It’s amazing how much better you feel when you take the time to put words to your feelings. Take time to pour out your worries and cares to the one who actually has the power to do something about them.
Have I taken the time to consider what’s going right?
I’ve heard it described this way…You know the sun is bigger than a quarter. However, if you were to face the sun and hold a quarter up close to your eye, you could convince yourself that a quarter is bigger than the sun because it’s all you can see.
It may seem far-fetched when talking about the sun and a quarter, but we can easily pump so much attention into our problems that we lose sight of everything that’s actually going right in our lives.
Even when we’ve done all the “right” things, we all face days and seasons where things just don’t work out the way we want them to…
These are the times we can hold on to his steady love and trust in His faithfulness to carry us through to the next hour, the next day, and the next season…

53 Birthdays | Reflecting On The Seasons
The FAB Journey
Birthdays are interesting things…a time when we celebrate and we’re celebrated for just being born. This week I turned 53, which means I am well-entrenched into my fifth decade.
While I thoroughly enjoyed my day of pampering and attention, I’ve come to the stage of life where each new year deserves a moment of focused reflection.

So here goes…
53 birthdays – Reflecting On The Seasons
I am more than a decade and I am more than a number. I am the sum total of God’s grace woven into a tapestry of memories and changing seasons.
Season of “life’s not fair” and why can’t I do anything with my hair!
Season of spread wings and new horizons
Season of early mornings and rocking sick babies
Season of bake sale brownies, homemade costumes, front row cheering sections, and proud tears
Season of letting go, a little…well, in my head, but never in my heart
Multiple seasons of being the wrong size…whatever that is?!
Season of more time, more wisdom, more experience than ever before.
This present season is one that deserves further reflection. Why? Because my whole life brings me to this point. I’ve walked through other seasons living for others’ approval; for degrees and training; for my kids; and for some elusive size. But, regardless of what my motivations were, I’ve also lived under the watchful eye of a loving God.
11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. 13 That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God. 14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him.
https://thefabjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/video-1599597021.mp4
I think I’ll choose “satisfied” as the signpost for this season…
Satisfaction for what He’s done…
Satisfaction for who I am and…
Satisfaction in knowing that God’s plan is good and purposeful…” nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it.”
Through it all, my faith has been strengthened from years of seeing Him come through in awesome, sometimes jaw-dropping, but ultimately, perfect ways time and time again.
This galvanized faith will lead and guide me through this 53rd year…feeling satisfied!

Denim Top| Staple Wardrobe Piece
The FAB Journey
The events of 2020 have altered our lives in a host of ways; including our jobs and our entertainment. I’ve noticed a huge shift in my wardrobe to flow with these changes. The vibe is just A LOT more casual.
Of course, it’s not too hard to put two and two together…we just don’t have many events to dress up for right now. So, it’s not the least bit surprising that we are all falling back to our favorite, go-to fabric – denim.
Denim has made its way into just about every corner of the world. And, I must admit that I share the world’s fascination with this fabric; however, I seldom hold to the typical t-shirt and jeans combination…even now.

Denim has the ability to lend casual ease to almost any outfit. That’s why I knew this denim top had great potential as a staple wardrobe piece the first time I set eyes on it.
I believe that every woman should have at least one denim top in her wardrobe. Whether worn alone or layered over other pieces, the denim top adds structure and polish without looking too formal.

What To Look For In A Denim Top As A Wardrobe Staple
Look for clean lines and tailoring.
The seams and trim of this top are slimming because they draw the eye to look vertically.
The shoulder seam should rest on top of the shoulder.
Look for a tapered shape.
Make sure that your denim top has tapered sides, rather than a straight boxy shape.
Look for one unique detail on a staple piece.
Details, like the back of this top, bring visual interest.
Just make sure that the details do not add bulk or frump.

Ultimately, your wardrobe staple pieces should be items that you go to again and again. Why?…because you know they look good on you and they are streamlined enough to provide the foundation for new, exciting outfits.
My Staple Verse For This Season
I guess these fashion tips mirror my life during this shifting season. Just like a well-constructed wardrobe, my life must also rest on some strong staple truths and there is one verse that continues to keep me anchored.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Twenty-twenty has been a year of canceled plans and seemingly closed doors. I’m so glad God has plans for me when all I see is an empty calendar.
Every time I’m tempted to wallow in self-pity or disappointment over this season, I remind myself that God’s plan holds hope and a future for me.
Yep, I think I better entrust my plans to Him and build on that promise…and I hope you can find the grace to do the same.
