Amish Scenes from Holmes County, Ohio – A Beautiful Sunny Day

This photo of an Amish farm in spring pretty much says it all.

Whiskers of the Lion – My Ninth Amish-Country Mystery

My ninth Amish-Country Mystery has been on sale for two days, now, and it is doing quite well.  “Whiskers” is the story of Fannie Helmuth, who has been hiding from the murderous drug cartel that was responsible for the death of Ruth Zook in The Names of Our Tears.  But Fannie’s biggest problem may not be escaping the drug cartel so much as it is escaping the FBI and all of the irksome entanglements of the English world.  Let me know what you think of Whiskers once you have read it.  I very much hope that you like it.

My Ninth Amish-Country Mystery – Whiskers of the Lion – Now Available for Sale

Here it is at last!  Whiskers of the Lion, my ninth Amish mystery set in Holmes County, Ohio, and in Middlefield, Ohio.  It is the continuation of the story of Fannie Helmuth, started briefly in The Names of Our Tears.  It has gone on sale today, in paper, electronic and audio formats, and I am eager for you to read it.  We have waited a long time for Fannie’s complete story to resolve itself, and finally you’ll be able to learn what has become of her since she fled the sheriff’s protection in The Names of Our Tears.  I very much hope you like it.  Please let me know.

Amish Scenes from Holmes County, Ohio – A Young Lad with His Team

Young Amish boys are expected to help out around the farm.  So too are the girls.  Here is a fellow who can’t be much older than ten, dragging a harrow over the soil.  If I know Amish boys, this one thinks it’s fun to run a team like this.

Whiskers of the Lion, My 9th Amish-Country Mystery, In Only One Week!

We are certainly getting closer to publication of my ninth Amish-Country Mystery, Whiskers of the Lion.  There is only one week now before the publication date of March 31st.  This is a favorite of mine.  It is a sequel to The Names of Our Tears, and it tells the continuing story of Fannie Helmuth, who has gone into hiding, escaping a murderous drug cartel.  Where has she been all summer long?  What can Sheriff Bruce Robertson do to find her and to keep her safe until Teresa Molina can be captured?  And are all of Fannie’s Florida friends trustworthy?  Fannie’s solution, with Robertson’s help, if she can pull it off, is the key to her life and to her chances for happiness in the far-flung Amish communities of America.  I have read the story a hundred times, and I have to say that I’ll probably read it again next Tuesday.

Amish Scenes from Holmes County, Ohio – Amish Man and His Larger Plow

In my last post, I showed you the simple type of plow that we typically see here in Ohio.  Now here is a bigger rig.  Interesting, don’t you think?  There is a wide range of farming practices among the Amish.

Amish Scenes From Holmes County, Ohio – A Man and His Plow

Here is an Amish fellow who is doing it the hard, old-fashioned way, walking behind his plow rather than riding.  It takes a strong man to wrangle the plow to cut a straight row, and he seems to be doing a fine job of it.  That’s a beautiful team of three horses, and if you can see it, he has his dog with him for companionship.  Beautiful Ohio in an Amish spring!

Amish Scenes From Holmes County, Ohio – Amish Girls Walking Home From School

On a spring afternoon like yesterday, it is fun to see the kids walking home from their Amish parochial schools.  These three girls each had a modern plastic lunch pail, and they didn’t seem to be in any particular hurry to get home to chores.  There are enough Amish parochial schools in this part of Ohio that one can drive the country lanes at the right time in the afternoon and see hundreds of kids like these three, walking along the pavement toward home.  Sorry kids, no sidewalks in Amish country.

Amish Scenes From Holmes County, Ohio – Amish Girls on a Swing

I have loved this image of Amish school girls on a swing from the moment I captured it a few years ago.  Can you remember swinging at recess?  Did you ever swing with such careless abandon?  These little Amish girls were pumping the swing with everything they had.  I think it is the very definition of childhood enthusiasm.
