When I was young, my passion was for technology. That became my job, and I ended up running a technology company during the first dot-com boom. I also helped start a charity, got an interesting and—I think—important change made to the Fraud Act 2006, and so on.

It was an exciting time, but sometimes I wished the world was different: more exciting, more meaningful. I've always had the gift or the curse of being able to daydream, and having it feel almost real to me. I wondered if other people would be interested in reading the stories I experienced, because they were stories, even though I didn't always write them down.

I guess everyone asks authors where their characters come from! But I particularly wondered about Adam, from Succubus. He felt very real and I couldn't help wondering if he was based on someone close to you?

I think all authors make characters out of bits of themselves, and bits of people they've known. For Adam I started with my memories of being sixteen, and added things on. His character probably owes more to me than anyone close to me, but there are aspects of other people in there too.

With the people around Adam, it's more difficult to say. I expect they get personality traits from people I've known, but I couldn't tell you who, or how I put them together. They just felt right and fitted with the plot. I wasn't at school with anyone who could be seen as Harriet or Owen, in case anyone is wondering!

Can you tell us a two-sentence horror story?

Pete Chown Kieran sat on a drawing pin, placed on his chair at school as a prank. This pin, however, was laced with ricin, and he died a week later.
