I think all authors make characters out of bits of themselves, and bits of people they've known. For Adam I started with my memories of being sixteen, and added things on. His character probably owes more to me than anyone close to me, but there are aspects of other people in there too.
With the people around Adam, it's more difficult to say. I expect they get personality traits from people I've known, but I couldn't tell you who, or how I put them together. They just felt right and fitted with the plot. I wasn't at school with anyone who could be seen as Harriet or Owen, in case anyone is wondering!
