Joby Aviation breaks ground on expanded Marina Pilot Production Line

MARINA – Joby Aviation is expanding in the city of Marina, more than doubling its working space, adding hundreds of more jobs, and making the spot “one of the most important sites in the world as it relates to development and manufacturing of high-tech electric airplanes,” according to the company president.

A ground-breaking ceremony was held Monday for a new 220,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, expected to begin operations in 2025.

“The expansion will be more than twice all the total footprint Joby Aviation now has at Marina airport,” said Didier Papadopoulos, president Joby Aviation. “It’s a huge expansion that will allow Joby to deliver 25 aircraft a year.”

When Joby Aviation first came to the Marina airport, it was a few dozen people. Six years later it is a few hundred people, said Papadopoulos. It has made its operations in Marina one of the most important sites in the world in the development and manufacture of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, according to Papadopoulos.

Joby’s Pilot Production Line in Marina, currently in its “mega-tent” at the Marina airport, is designed to specifically help Joby learn how to manufacture and optimize its manufacturing processes so it is able to scale to larger volumes.

Joby has designed and produced an electric air taxi that will carry a pilot and four passengers at speeds up to 200 mph offering high-speed mobility with a fraction of the noise produced by helicopters and zero operating emissions.

JoeBen Bivert, Joby Aviation founder and CEO, said his company is focused on creating the future.

Joby is different than just about any other aviation company in the world because of its vertical integration – designing, building, testing and manufacturing almost every component on the aircraft, he said.

The aviation company has testing facilities which include its integrated test lab and its flight testing capabilities in Marina. With the ground-breaking of its new facility at the airport, Joby will substantially increase what it can build in its pilot manufacturing line.

Toyota has been a catalyst in helping Joby with its manufacturing operations. Bevirt acknowledged that Toyota’s team in California and Japan have been vital to building the manufacturing processes and facilities and are deeply invested in Joby’s undertaking.

The expanded facility will also house a range of operations facilities, including an expanded pilot training and flight simulation center as well as aircraft maintenance facilities that are designed to support the scaling of Joby’s commercial operations

The expansion will be funded in part by the $9.8 million California Competes grant awarded to Joby by Governor Newsom’s Office of Business and Economic Development to support the company’s continued statewide expansion.

The 50th anniversary of the city of Marina is coming up, said Marina Mayor Bruce Delgado, and this building is bigger than any ever built in the city.

Delgado said that never before in the city’s history has a company come in and created as many jobs — and it is poised to add hundreds more — while bringing an additional $250 million to the regional economy.

“No one envisioned when the Army left us in 1995 (with the closure of Fort Ord) that their infantry, their mortars, their rockets, their ammunition and helicopters operating here, would be replaced by the most futuristic eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft the world’s ever seen,” said Delgado.

Bonnie Simi, Joby president of operations, said she is responsible for “developing the workforce of today and tomorrow, and the facilities to host them.”

The new facility Joby is building will not only allow it to manufacture more than double the aircraft it currently makes, but will also house other operations.

“One of the areas that I’m very excited about is our Maintenance Apprentice program,” said Simi. “We just received, because of the success of our Manufacturing Apprentice program, a half-million dollar grant from the (Federal Aviation Administration) to develop a maintenance training program for maintenance jobs here in Marina.”

Joby has been doing business and developing a manufacturing facility in Marina for the past six years where it launched production of its aircraft at its Pilot Production Plant with the first aircraft rolling off the line in June 2023, to begin flight testing.

The second production prototype aircraft to roll off the company’s pilot production line was the backdrop for the ground-breaking ceremony.

The Marina facility is one of three in California with others at Santa Cruz — where the company is headquartered — and San Carlos. Joby Aviation also has a facility in Munich.

In September, Joby announced it had selected Dayton, Ohio — beating out Marina and other contenders — as the location for its scaled manufacturing facility, capable of producing up to 500 electric vertical take-off and landing eVTOL aircraft per year, with plans to invest up to $500 million and create up to 2,000 high-quality, clean manufacturing jobs in the region. Construction of the scaled Ohio facility is expected to start this year and it is expected to come online in 2025.

In March, the company announced its acquisition of an existing facility at Dayton International Airport where it has begun hiring in support of its initial operations there. The facility acquired by Joby will be fitted out to support initial manufacturing operations in Dayton, which are expected to begin later this year. The facility will be used for the manufacturing of aircraft parts in support of Joby’s Pilot Production Line in Marina.

Monday’s ground-breaking ceremony for Joby Aviation’s Marina expansion was attended by local and regional stakeholders representing the city of Marina, the county of Monterey, Monterey Bay DART, Monterey Bay Economic Partnership, Mujeres en Accion, and many others.

The best recipes are made from shopping your fridge

Meredith Deeds | Star Tribune (TNS)

Sometimes dinner arises from a well-laid plan that includes time for a leisurely trip to the grocery store.

Related Articles Gretchen’s table: Chicken tinga tacos can feed a crowd Make carnitas for Cinco de Mayo tacos and tasty leftovers Quick Fix: Baked Pecan Crusted Halibut with Broccoli and Sweet Potatoes The recipe that will get you hooked on tofu This is the best Italian dish you’ve never heard of The same cool, calm cook who put together this plan then casually chops and dices everything perfectly — probably with one hand, while cradling a glass of wine with the other — before tossing it all together in a hot pan and arranging everything perfectly on warm serving plates. Sounds great, but it’s not how my week went.

Mine was a lot less planned and a lot more hectic. And I’m sure I’m not alone.

I had to get dinner on the table and I didn’t have time to run to the store, so I had to shop my fridge. And my fridge wasn’t giving me many options. I had cottage cheese, eggs, butter and asparagus.

I thought about just whipping up some scrambled eggs, but then I remembered a Ukrainian friend of mine telling me about an easy dumpling recipe her mother used to make using farmer’s cheese: “lazy” vareniki.

While traditional vareniki are similar to pierogies, this easier version skips the pasta-like dough that holds the cheesy filling and cuts right to the chase. The result is something like ricotta gnocchi.

Farmer’s cheese is typically drier than cottage cheese, but the latter is what I had in the fridge, so I figured it was worth a shot.

I mixed the cottage cheese with eggs, flour, salt and baking powder, to lighten the dumplings just a bit. I let the dough rest for a few minutes to give it a chance to firm up enough to handle. Then I rolled the dough into snakes and cut them up into small pieces.

I put a pot of salted water on to boil, then gently simmered the dumplings until they were cooked through.

I worried that they might fall apart in the cooking process, but that didn’t happen. Instead, they held together beautifully and what came out of the pot were pillowy, tender dumplings with a cheesy flavor that didn’t need a complicated sauce.

To make them a meal, I simply sautéed the asparagus and browned some butter with a little lemon zest and juice. I tossed the cooked dumplings into the pan and let them brown just a touch. Voilà!

Did I look calm, cool and collected during the process? No, but I did have a delicious dinner, and a glass of wine. Or two.

Easy Cheese Dumplings in Lemon-Brown Butter Sauce with Asparagus

Serves 4.

Somewhere between gnocchi and Ukrainian “lazy” vareniki, these cheesy, light, pillowy dumplings get their tangy flavor from cottage cheese. A simple brown butter lemon sauce and sautéed asparagus round out the meal. From Meredith Deeds.

For the dumplings:

2 c. (16 oz.) cottage cheese, 4% fat2 large eggs1/2 tsp. salt1/4 tsp. baking powder1 3/4 c. all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting1 tbsp. olive oil

For the sauce:

6 tbsp. unsalted butter, divided1 lb. asparagus, trimmed and cut into 1 1/2-inch piecesSalt and freshly ground black pepper1 tsp. grated lemon zest2 tbsp. lemon juice

Directions

In a large bowl, combine cottage cheese, eggs, 1/2 teaspoon salt and baking powder. Stir to combine. Add the flour and stir until a soft dough comes together. Refrigerate the dough for 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, bring 4 quarts of water to boil in a large pot over high heat. Add 1 tablespoon salt.

Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly dust a work surface with flour.

With floured hands, bring dough together on the work surface into a large log. Divide log into 4 pieces. Working with one piece at a time, roll the dough into a 3/4-inch-thick rope, rolling from the center of the dough outward. Cut rope into 3/4-inch-long pieces and transfer to baking sheet. Repeat with remaining dough, dusting work surface with flour as needed if the dough becomes sticky.

Coat another large, rimmed baking sheet with oil. Reduce heat on the pot of boiling water to bring to a simmer. Gently drop half of the dumplings into the water and cook until all pieces float to surface. Continue to gently simmer until dumplings are cooked through, about 2 to 3 minutes longer, adjusting heat to maintain gentle simmer. Using a slotted spoon, transfer dumplings to the oiled baking sheet. Repeat cooking process with remaining dumplings.

Heat 1 tablespoon butter over medium-high heat in a 12-inch skillet. Add asparagus and 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until crisp-tender, about 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer to a plate.

Add the remaining 5 tablespoons butter to the skillet over medium-high heat, swirling occasionally, until butter is browned and has a nutty aroma, about 1 to 2 minutes. Add lemon zest and dumplings, and cook, stirring occasionally, until dumplings brown lightly. Stir in the asparagus and lemon juice and cook, stirring, another minute. Divide among serving bowls and serve hot.

Gretchen’s table: Chicken tinga tacos can feed a crowd

Gretchen McKay | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (TNS)

I love tacos when I’m cooking for a crowd because they’re usually so much easier to pull together than a sit-down dinner with multiple courses, and they can be easily individualized depending on the toppings.

Any protein made with tinga, a spicy-ish sauce crafted from fire-roasted tomatoes, chili peppers and spices, is always at the top of my go-to list because it’s so flavorful and can be prepared fairly quickly — a blessing when you’re pinched for time in a crowded kitchen full of hungry people.

I was just that during a recent weekend, when four of my five kids (plus two daughters-in-law and two grandkids) came for a weekend visit. Taking everyone out to dinner would have cost the proverbial arm and a leg, along with the patience required to dine with active toddlers. And ordering pizza just seemed so … predictable.

But tacos? Kids especially love crunchy handheld foods and the grown-ups appreciated the casual eat what you want, when you want it taco bar I set up on the kitchen counter.

There are probably as many recipes for chicken tinga as there are home cooks, but a few pantry ingredients are essential: tomatoes, white onion and garlic, chipotle peppers in adobo and Mexican oregano, which is a bit more floral than the Italian variety used in pasta sauces.

I also like to add a little cumin to the sauce. Mexican cookbook author Rick Bayless, whose recipe I’ve adapted over the years, also recommends a dash or two of vinegar for extra tang.

This recipe is doubled for a crowd, but can easily be cut in half for smaller gatherings. If you like, you can cook the chicken thighs whole and shred them in the pan with two forks just before serving, or you can start with thin slices or bite sized pieces. It all depends on how chunky you like your tacos.

Similarly, if you prefer a tamer dish, cut down on the amount of chipotles and adobo sauce you add.

Serve with a salty, crumbly cheese such as queso fresco or feta and lots of chopped cilantro.

Chicken tinga tacos are easy to make and depending on the toppings offered, totally customizable. Vegetable or olive oil to coat the pan1 large white onion, sliced a little less than 1/2 inch thick2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs5 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped2 (15-ounce) cans diced fire-roasted tomatoes1 (7-ounce) can chipotle chiles in adobo sauce, or to taste2 teaspoons Mexican oregano2 teaspoons cuminA little additional vinegar, if you think the dish needs it1 ripe avocado, sliced1 cup Mexican queso fresco or other fresh cheese like farmers cheese, mild feta or fresh goat cheeseA handful of cilantro leaves for garnishChopped red onion, for garnish24 hard taco shells or soft taco-sized flour tortillas, warmed

Prepare chicken. Set a very large (12-inch) skillet over medium-high heat and drizzle the bottom liberally with oil. When the pan is hot, add onions.

Stir onions until they soften and start to brown, about 4 minutes, then snuggle the chicken in the pan in a single layer on the bottom. Cook until everything is nicely browned, about 5-6 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook a minute or so longer.

In a blender or food processor, blend the tomatoes and their juice to a very coarse puree.

Remove chipotle peppers from sauce and chop into small pieces — start with 3 or 4, you can always add more.

Add puree to the browned chicken in the skillet, along with the chopped chiles, half the adobo sauce from can and oregano and cumin. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until the chicken is tender and the mixture is thick, about 4 minutes.

Taste and add a little more adobo sauce or chopped chiles if it’s not spicy enough. Season with 2 teaspoons of salt and a couple dashes of white or red vinegar, if you would like it a little more tangy. Stir to combine.

When ready to serve, place some chicken tinga in warmed hard taco shells or on warmed soft tortillas. Top with sliced avocado, a sprinkling of fresh cheese, chopped onion and leaves of cilantro.

Serves 8.

Summer movies: ‘Fall Guy,’ ‘Furiosa,’ ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ lead the way

The summer movie season is upon us.

Bring on Batman! Bring on Spider-Man! Bring on Darth Vader!

Wait, what’s that? No Spidey? No Bats? No visit to a galaxy far, far away?

Come to think of it, Godzilla and Kong have already smashed into theaters, and those shape-shifting robots won’t return until the fall with the animated “Transformers One.”

What in the “Jurassic World” is going on here? (Yeah, no dinosaurs, either.)

Oh, don’t worry, we’re still looking at a summer of sequels (“Inside Out 2”), prequels (“A Quiet Place: Day One”) reboots (“Alien: Romulus”) and heroic — and violent — men in ridiculous costumes (“Deadpool & Wolverine”). But we may just get an original story or three, too.

Here’s a look at some of what’s coming to theaters and streaming services in the warmer months:

“The Fall Guy” | May 3 | Theaters

Look for “Barbie” star Ryan Gosling to bring some leftover Kenergy to this action romp, based on the TV show that saw Lee Majors as Colt Seavers, a stuntman who worked on the side as a bounty hunter. Now Gosling is Colt, a stuntman not far removed from a career-threatening accident who’s pulled into the case of a missing movie star. Emily Blunt,” who was a key player in Academy Award winner “Oppenheimer” — the other half of the “Barbenheimer” craze — co-stars as a first-time movie director … and Colt’s ex-girlfriend. The cast also boasts Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who’s heavily rumored to be the next James Bond. Last but not least, “The Fall Guy” is helmed by David Leitch (“Bullet Train,” “Deadpool 2,” “Atomic Blonde”), who knows a bit about being a stuntman, as he was one, and about making movies that successfully blend action and comedy.

Michael Showalter, whose directorial credits include winners “The Big Sick” (2017) and “The Lovebirds” (2020), is at the helm for this romance about a 40-something single mother (Anne Hathaway) and a 20-something member of a boy band (Nicholas Galitzine). Showalter and co-writer Jennifer Westfeldt (“Kissing Jessica Stein”) adapted the book of the same name by Robinne Lee.

“Prom Dates” | May 3 | Hulu

Julia Lester and Antonioa Gentry star as best Defriends looking to have an epic senior prom — a goal in jeopardy when each breaks up with her date shortly before the big dance in this coming-of-age comedy directed by Kim O. Nguyen (“Never Have I Ever”).

“Tarot” | May 3 | Theaters

Your future looks bleak — that is if you’re a character in this scary movie in which members of a group of college friends start dying after having a tarot card reading. The cast is led by Harriet Slater (“Pennyworth”).

“Unfrosted” | May 3 | Netflix

Well, THIS is not nothing. Jerry Seinfeld makes his directorial debut, stars in and co-wrote this romp about warring cereal companies in the early 1960s. The crispy-and-sweet cast also boasts Melisssa McCarthy, Hugh Grant, Amy Schumer, Jim Gaffigan, Peter Dinklage, James Marsen, Christian Slater and Bill Burr, among others.

The father-of-the-bride formula has produced a number of movies over the years, and Netflix will try to flip the script a bit with Brooke Shields as the mother and Miranda Cosgrove (“iCarly) as the bride to be in this comedy directed by Mark Waters (“Freaky Friday,” 2004’s “Mean Girls”). (His previous effort was the gender-flipping “He’s All That” in 2021, so this really should be comfortable territory for him.)

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” | May 10 | Theaters

After a trilogy of solid movies in the “Planet of the Apes” reboot series, we jump ahead a few generations with this fourth entry. Apes are living in harmony as the planet’s dominant species, with humans relegated to the shadows. The apes are now ruled by the ambitious Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand), who’s searching for valuable human technology. Meanwhile, a young chimp, Noa (Owen Teague), befriends a feral young female, Mae (Freya Allan), aka “Nova,” and the two go on a dangerous journey. Wes Ball (“The Maze Runner” trilogy) directs from a screenplay by Josh Friedman (“Foundation”).

Taken from the world tragically early — at age 27, like a few other forces in the world of music — British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse gets the biopic treatment with this film named after her hugely successful and critically acclaimed 2006 album. Marissa Abela (“Industry”) portrays Winehouse in the film helmed by “Fifty Shades of Grey” director Sam Taylor-Johnson, the wife of Aaron Taylor Johnson.

“IF” | May 17 | Theaters

After directing two highly entertaining “A Quiet Place” movies, John Krasinski trades vicious aliens for something kinder and gentler: imaginary friends. While Krasinski is in the cast, Ryan Reynolds stars opposite young Cailey Fleming, whose Bea can see other kids’ imaginary friends, who need her help. Providing voicework for said creative creatures include Steve Carell, Krasinski’s old buddy from “The Office,” along with the director’s wife, Emily Blunt, and other heavy hitters including Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Matt Damon, Sam Rockwell, Maya Rudolph and the late Louis Gossett Jr.

If we’re following, this is the first part of a horror trilogy, with all installments helmed by Renny Harlin (“Die Hard 2”), that will serve as a trilogy to 2008’s “The Strangers” and its 2018 sequel, “The Strangers: Prey at Night,” both of which were at least co-written by Bryan Bertino. The latter is credited with the story for this new scare fest, in which a young couple (Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez) who, after car troubles, spend the night in an eerie town — specifically in a remote cabin — and, of course, are terrorized by some masked folks. If you’re not frightened half to death after this first new flick, fear not: The subsequent chapters both are expected to hit theaters in 2024.

“Thelma the Unicorn” | May 17 | Netflix

Musical artist Brittany Howard voices the titular creature in this animated adaptation of the children’s book series by Aaron Blabey. The voice cast also includes Will Forte and Zach Galifianakis.

“The Blue Angels” | May 23 | Prime video

After this documentary spends a week in IMAX theaters — and, honestly, that’s surely the best way to experience it — it will soar into living rooms via Amazon’s streaming platform. Says a news release about this look at the U.S. Navy’s flight demonstration squadron and frequent air show headliner, “The immersive footage puts you in the cockpit for a firsthand view of the Blue Angels’ precision flying, while the aerial shots deliver a spectacular showcase of the breathtaking maneuvers that have made them the world’s premier jet team.” (Note to self: Make time to see this in IMAX.)

“Atlas” | May 24 | Netflix

In the latest from “San Andreas” and “Rampage” director Brad Peyton, Jennifer Lopez is Atlas Shepherd, a heroine out to stop a problematic artificial intelligence. The cast also features Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown and Mark Strong.

Are you ready to venture back into the sensory-overload post-apocalyptic environment writer-director George Miller gave the world in 2015 with “Mad Max: Fury Road.” This prequel/spinoff — the fifth installment in Miller’s “Mad Max” franchise — sees the talented Anya Taylor-Joy portraying a younger version of the titular character, portrayed memorably in “Fury Road” by Charlize Theron. Anya Taylor-Joy’s Imperator Furiosa will butt heads — violently, we presume — with Chris Hemsworth’s Warlord Dementus in a film sure to deliver wild sights along with sound and overall fury.

“Summer Camp” | May 31 | Theaters

Three women whose friendship dates way back to summer school, played by Diane Keaton, Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard, look to recapture the old magic at a camp reunion in this comedy, which also features Eugene Levy.

“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” | June 7 | Theaters

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back as brave-and-brash cops for a fourth installment in this action-comedy franchise, and the directing tandem of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, aka Adil El Arbi, returns after helming the previous installment, 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life.”

“The Crow” | June 7 | Theaters

In this reboot of the story of the resurrected and avenging Eric Draven, aka The Crow, Bill Skarsgård takes over the titular role, first made famous by the late Brandon Lee in the 1994 film of the same name. Like that movie and those that followed, this new effort is based on the comic book series by James O’Barr. Rupert Sanders (“Snow White and the Huntsman”) directs.

In select theaters on May 24, the latest from director Richard Linklater (“Before Sunset,” “Boyhood”) sees Glen Powell (“Anyone but You”) doing his charming thing as a cop who regularly poses as a hit man — that is, as Powell’s Gary Johnson says, things get “complicated.” That’s when Adria Arjona’s Maddy Masters enters his life. Co-written by Linklater and Powell, this action-romance-comedy is based on a true story.

“Inside Out 2” | June 14 | Theaters

Riley, the young girl from 2015 Pixar Animation Studios hit “Inside Out,” is now a teen, which means (gasp!) new emotions. Returning emotions Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith) and Anger (Lewis Black) are joined by newcomers Envy (Ayo Edibiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) and, perhaps most importantly, Anxiety (Maya Hawke). Other newcomers include Tony Hale and Liza Lapira, taking over the roles of Fear and Disgust, respectively. And Riely is now voiced by Kensington Tallman, while Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan return to voice her parents. All this internal emotional havoc will be orchestrated by Kelsey Mann, making his feature-directing debut, and Meg LaFauve, who wrote the screenplay after serving as a co-writer on “Inside Out,” which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2016.

Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, would seem to be a chip of the ol’ creepy filmmaking block — at least if the recently released trailer for this horror entry is any indication. Starring Dakota Fanning as a woman who becomes trapped in a mysterious forest, it is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by A. M. Shine.

It was really decent of filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and actor Emma Stone not to keep us waiting for another collaboration after last year giving the world the cinematic treasure that is “Poor Things.” Among those joining the Academy Award winner Stone on screen for this three-story affair will be Jesse Plemons and her “Poor Things” co-star Willem Dafoe.

“A Quiet Place: Day One” | June 28 | Theaters

It’s still, well, pretty quiet when it comes to details regarding this prequel to writer-director John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place” (2018) and “A Quiet Place Part II” (2020). We know that a key player from the latter, Djimon Hounsou, is back, and he’s joined by actors Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn and Alex Wolff for this tale. It’s safe to say the movie — written and directed by Michael Sarnoski (“Pig”), who collaborated on the story with Krasinski — will take us back to the day of the invasion by ferocious aliens who don’t see so well but can attack upon hearing the slightest sound.

“Horizon: An American Saga (Part One)” and “Horizon: An American Saga (Part Two)” | June 28 and Aug. 16 | Theaters

Directing for the first time since 2003’s “Open Range,” Kevin Costner also co-wrote and stars in this Western tale he’s been trying to bring to the big screen for just over a quarter of a century. The now former “Yellowstone” star has said he plans to make a four-part saga, but at least we’re getting these first two parts of “Saga” close together on the calendar. Telling a fictional story set before the Civil War about the expansion of the American West, “Horizon” also boasts cast members Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, Giovanni Ribisi and many others.

“Despicable Me 4” | July 3 | Theaters

Our villain-turned-hero Gru (voiced as always by Steve Carell) would seem to have his hands full in the latest entry in this enduring animated franchise. His family keeps growing — in addition to wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig) and three adopted daughters, there’s now the trouble-making Gru Jr. — and characters voiced by Will Ferrell, Sofia Vergara and Joey King are out to get him. Back at the helm is Chris Remaud, who directed 2010’s “Despicable Me” and 2013’s “Despicable Me 2” has been known to give voice to one of those little yellow minions now and again.

“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” | July 5 | Netflix

Eddie Murphy reprises one of his most believed characters, street-smart, wise-cracking police officer Axel Foley, in this fourth “Beverly Hills Cop” installment. Judge Reinhold and John Ashton are back, too, as California cops Billy Rosewood and John Taggart, respectively, but Axel — who’s out to uncover a conspiracy after his daughter (Taylour Paige) is threatened — has a new partner played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Egill Olafsson stars in this tale of a man’s emotional journey to find a long-lost love before his own time runs out. Baltasar Kormákur (“Everest”) directs and co-wrote the screenplay.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” | July 26 | Theaters

The stakes appear to be of the universe-altering variety in this long-awaited third “Deadpool” entry, with Ryan Reynolds’ titular antihero going so far as to team up with old nemesis Wolverine — being played for the umpteenth time by Hugh Jackman — to try to save the day. Shawn Levy takes over directing duties after working with Reynolds on 2021’s “Free Guy” and 2022’s “The Adam Project,” but, despite those family-friendly titles and Deadpool now being controlled by Disney-owned Marvel Studios, “Deadpool & Wolverine” appears to have all the colorful language and over-the-top action we’ve come to expect from the franchise. Morena Baccarin returns as Vanessa, and newcomer Emma Corriwn portrays the powerful mutant Cassandra Nova in this story, the co-writers of which include Reynolds and Levy.

“Harold and the Purple Crayon” | Aug. 2 | Theaters

Positioned as a sequel to the 1955 children’s book of the same name by Crocket Johnson, this live action-meets-animation fantasy stars Zachary Levi — as a now-grown Harold, long the holder of a magical purple crayon — Lil Rel Howery, Benjamin Bottani, Zooey Deschanel, Alfred Molina and others. Carlos Saldanha (“Ferdinand”) directs.

“My Old Ass” | Aug. 2 | Theaters

We’re comfortable assuming the title of this comedy from writer-director Megan Park (“The Fallout”) — in which a girl (Maisy Stella) is warned by her future self (Aubrey Plaza) not to fall in love — tells us a lot about the tone we can expect.

“Borderlands” | Aug. 9 | Theaters

The television world has produced a couple of excellent video game adaptations of late in “The Last of Us” and “Fallout,” and the movies get another shot with this slice of irreverent sci-fi-action-comedy from director Eli Roth (“Hostel”). The ensemble cast is led by the unusual but appealing tandem of Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart.

Black Lively, Justin Baldoni (“Jane the Virgin”) and Brandon Sklenar star in an adaptation of the romance novel of the same name by Colleen Hoover. Baldoni, whose directorial credits include 2020’s “Clouds,” also is at the helm of this one.

“Trap” | Aug. 9 | Theaters

The Internet — or, more accurately, some people on the Internet — suspect this next film from M. Night Shyamalan is another fitting within the universe that began with his twisty 2000 hit “Unbreakable.” Regardless, we mostly like what the director has been putting out into the world in recent years, so we’re looking forward to this original tale of a dad (Josh Hartnett) who, while talking his daughter to a big concert, realizes he’s suspected by authorities of being the serial killer knowns as “The Butcher.”

“Alien: Romulus” | Aug. 16 | Theaters

With 2016’s “Don’t Breathe,” director Federico Alvarez showed he knows how to build tension — a prerequisite for helming a film in the long-running “Alien” franchise. This entry is said to be set between the two most-loved movies in the series, the saga-launching “Aliens” (1979) and its 1986 sequel, “Aliens” — directed, respectively, by Ridley Scott and James Cameron. It doesn’t sound like the most original of setups — a group of space colonists scavenging an old space station and running afoul of one of those teeth-forward monsters — but we’ll see. (In space, no one can hear you complain about a movie that feels a bit too much like what’s come before it.) By the way, Scott, who was at the helm of 2017’s “Alien: Covenant,” is counted among the film’s producers.

Oh, hey, look -- it's a friend Xenomorph in a scene from Oh, hey, look — it’s a friend Xenomorph in a scene from “Alien: Romulus.” (Courtesy of 20th Century Studios)“Blink Twice” | Aug. 23 | Theaters

Zoe Kravitz makes her directorial debut in this black comedy thriller starring Naomi Ackie (“The End of the F***ing World”) and Channing Tatum as a waitress and the tech mogul who invites her to an island where, you guessed it, some crazy things go down. The cast also boasts Christian Slater, Haley Joel Osment and Alia Shawkat, and the whole thing looks like a lot of twisted fun.

Guatemala becoming tourism hot spot for young travelers

Adventurous travelers seeking beauty and budget thrills should look no further than Guatemala: a friendly country that remains largely unexplored by many Americans.

A question I fielded several times before my late February trip: Why Guatemala?

My partner and I have made a habit of planning at least one international trip each year. Actually, I’ll shoulder most of the blame — nothing scratches my travel itch like a new passport stamp. But because we’re early-career professionals, with limited stockpiles of paid time off and inevitable bills, a month-long vacation to Southeast Asia or Eastern Europe is out of the question (for now).

Last summer, I found myself in a rabbit hole of research: Panama, Aruba, Curaçao. Slowly, the pieces fell together for Guatemala.

Compared to my other potential destinations, Denver International Airport offers inexpensive connecting flights to Guatemala City that take a minimum of around six hours of travel time. I started to hear about this friend or that roommate who had visited — or even temporarily moved to — the Central American country over the past few years and couldn’t get enough of it.

Social media platform TikTok features videos of jet-setters of every creed successfully journeying through the tourist destinations of Antigua and Lake Atitlán, offering tips on how to navigate the nation. By August, our accommodations were booked.

Both sets of our parents initially balked at the idea. My dad had previously flown to Guatemala City on business, and was confined within the limits of Central America’s largest metropolis. Like others in the baby boomer and Generation X demographics, much of what they’d grown up hearing about the country was related to its conditions during the Guatemalan Civil War, which lasted 36 years.

However, over the past decade, the nation’s tourism industry has consistently grown — minus a setback during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to data-gathering platform Statista. And I was hearing piqued interest from millennials and zoomers about making the trip south. Days before my trip, a shopping center clerk peppered me with questions about my itinerary as she considered doing the same.

After my editors gave me the green light to briefly chase a story on the ground, the trip became both work and play — four days off, two days on. I took the necessary precautions learned on my last reporting trip to Peru in the pre-COVID era: monitor travel advisories with the U.S. State Department, submit my itinerary to the agency’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program and set an appointment with a travel clinic to get relevant vaccines.

With interviews set and bags packed, we hopped on our 6 a.m. American Airlines flight, then stopped briefly at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, before touching down in the early afternoon at La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City. On the flight, our seat neighbor — a Guatemalan who planned to visit her family for a long weekend before heading back to the U.S. — excitedly shared her recommendations, then led us through the winding halls of the airport to customs and immigration.

Guatemala’s cash economy

After a quick and easy process, we were set to embark into a new country — and learned lessons pretty quickly. We brought cash because Guatemala is a cash-reliant economy, particularly outside of its capital city. The airport provides several opportunities to exchange dollars for quetzales, with $1 worth about 8 quetzales, as of mid-April. It’s best to fork over the added exchange fee there and avoid the inconvenience of hunting for a bank like we did later.

More than three million people reside in the city’s urban area, which is made up of 21 zones — some of which tourists are advised against visiting. We stayed one night in Zone 4, which a travel blog calls “the upcoming hipster area.” Zones 9 and 10 come highly recommended, too. We felt safe and relaxed in the neighborhood around our Airbnb — a unit in a modern apartment complex, with its own private patio.

Our plans for that first day were ambitious: see the National Palace of Culture, stop by the city’s market and eat dinner at steakhouse Hacienda Real Zona 10. Instead, we took in the sunset views on the rooftop of restaurant Los Tres Tiempos in the city’s historical district, cocktails and croquetas de pache — mozzarella croquettes made of Guatemalan potato dough — in hand, before turning in. But if you’re short on time or not a big city person, then you can skip visiting the capital like most tourists do.

Disclaimer: I’m not sure what it would be like to travel through Guatemala without a Spanish speaker by my side. Spanish and even some Mayan dialects take precedence over English throughout the country. Because that’s my partner’s first language, I didn’t have to put my rudimentary skills to the test. However, I encountered plenty of Europeans and North Americans who managed to make it from Point A to Point B.

Antigua

The next morning started with the one-hour drive west to the colonial city of Antigua. Visitors have several options for transportation. Uber is available, and we used it for a short ride in Guatemala City, but I’d read enough mixed reviews for me to largely opt against it. The bravest — and stingiest — of travelers sometimes ride the chicken buses: decorated buses that serve as public transportation. However, I’d also seen a litany of online grievances, as the buses can often run unreliably and feel crowded, with the risk of pickpockets.

Instead, we used private cars and shared shuttle services to travel from town to town, which are affordable by American standards. Viator Travel served as a trusty resource for finding highly-reviewed drivers, who often arrived early and provided a smooth ride.

Our two nights in Antigua left us wishing for more time. There, activities abound — sightseeing at the famous Santa Catalina Arch and Central Park, bartering at the massive Mercado Central and eating so many piping-hot tortillas. My go-to breakfast for days in a row: plantains, refried beans, farmer’s cheese and eggs soaked in salsa, scooped into tortillas and washed down with that famous Guatemalan coffee.

Antigua is the place to buy souvenirs. I scored a Mayan cookbook, plus trinkets for my family like handmade worry dolls: tiny dolls that you tuck under your pillow to whisk away your stresses as you dream. It’s also the spot for nightlife, with several dozen bars and restaurants concentrated in a walkable area that’s both spotless and safe.

Speaking of walking, follow our lead and bring a duffle or weekend bag, instead of a suitcase. Otherwise, navigating the cobblestone roads can quickly turn into the bane of your existence. And wear comfortable sneakers. We walked almost 9 miles one day, but that’s the best way to find hole-in-the-wall joints like restaurant Cafeteria La Concepcion, which is where I tried the traditional dish of pepián de pollo, a Guatemalan chicken stew.

Depending on the timing of your trip, you could also experience a local festival. I was delighted to realize that we visited ahead of Semana Santa, or Holy Week, with Guatemala considered a deeply Christian country. Street vendors sell cheap delicacies, such as empanadas de leche, or sweet cream empanadas. Antigua residents wake up every Sunday during Lent and create alfombras — intricately designed “carpets” made of flower petals and sawdust dyed in every color — on the streets before the evening’s religious procession. Then, just hours later, the temporary creations are stepped on and swept up.

From Antigua, you can admire the surrounding peaks of towering volcanoes, and tour operators like OX Expeditions take hikers on excursions to Pacaya, Acatenango and Agua volcanoes. We signed up for an easy sunset hike up to Pacaya and its lava fields. The other two are known as longer, more intense endeavors. I would strongly advise any hiking hopefuls to cough up the money and join a group because robberies of solo tourists are common along the trails.

Lake Atitlán

My first work day was spent reporting in Jocotenango, a town on the outskirts of Antigua, with the team at the nonprofit Education for the Children Foundation. They run the School of Hope, a free private school for disadvantaged students. I chatted with pupils and teachers during the school day. Then, U.S. executive director Sara Miller drove me around town and up to La Vista Hermosa, a shantytown of homes built illegally on the hillside where about 150 of the school’s families reside.

As a journalist, I’m grateful to have spent those hours getting the perspective that tourists often don’t see, but, for that reason, I won’t highlight Jocotenango as a place that visitors need on their itineraries. Then, we hopped in a shared shuttle — a small van that fits 10 passengers — for the three-hour ride to Lake Atitlán. If you get car sick, then it is absolutely necessary to bring non-drowsy motion sickness medicine to survive the winding roads.

Lake Atitlán is often referred to as “the Lake Como of Latin America,” referencing the Italian lake in the Alps’ foothills. It’s also held sacred by the nation’s Mayan population — Guatemala’s largest Indigenous group. Outside of Guatemala City, Native people in their traditional garb are a common sight. A Mayan woman typically wears a corte (skirt), huipil (blouse) and faja (belt), and you come across shops selling the clothing in different colors and patterns.

Upon arriving at the lake, you’re typically dropped off in Panajachel — one of almost a dozen towns and villages sitting on the water’s edge. There, I spent my final day of reporting at the headquarters of nonprofit Friendship Bridge, which works with Indigenous women entrepreneurs to provide loans, business training and more.

Nicknamed Pana, the town is accessible by car, but several of the most popular destinations can only be reached by boat. Before departing Pana for other lakeside locations, stock up on sunscreen, beer or any other desirable products because the small stores in the remote villages offer limited stock.

Public and private lanchas, or boats, float at the main dock to ferry locals and tourists across the lake. Beeline for the cheap public option, which costs 10 to 25 quetzales, or you could be swindled by a private captain into paying hundreds of quetzales for your own boat. It’s a longer wait as the water taxi loads up on passengers, but it’s worthwhile for your wallet.

The lake is a place to relax, swim and hop from village to village, which is exactly what my partner and I did on our last day of vacation. Boats are ever reliable on the lake, and you can flag one down at the nearest dock. But I wanted to try out a tuk-tuk — a doorless, three-wheeled vehicle, manned by a driver, who can transport you between towns. I highly recommend the very Guatemalan experience.

Our favorite village: San Juan La Laguna, which bursts with art, restaurants and merchants. Our least favorite: San Marcos La Laguna — a hippie haven, known for its yoga retreats and meditation centers. However, it felt very gentrified to me.

We didn’t get the chance to visit Santa Catarina Palopó, where the houses are painted in eye-popping colors. Cerro Tzankujil Nature Reserve has a prime spot for cliff jumping into the lake, which I’d add to my list when we return.

And that’s “when,” not “if,” because I’d happily fly back to Guatemala for a much longer trip in the future. Not only did I feel welcome and safe during my travels, but I also experienced an adventure that I won’t soon forget.

IF YOU GO

Where to eat:

Los Tres Tiempos, 6ta. Avenida “A” 10-13 Zona 01, Azotea Del Edificio Centro Vivo, Cuidad de Guatemala: A chic rooftop restaurant, this is the ideal spot to watch the sun set in Guatemala City’s historical district. Enjoy 360-degree views of the Central American metropolis on the outdoor patio.

Cafeteria La Concepcion, H75F+5C4, Antigua: This unpretentious, hole-in-the-wall restaurant offers a limited menu for low prices, with top-tier Guatemalan food like pepián de pollo.

Restaurante 7 Caldos, 3a Calle Oriente 24, Antigua: Enter through the cobblestone street into an open-air restaurant where you can watch as your tortillas are made fresh. The expansive menu, which includes cocktails, is sure to satisfy most cravings.

Café 22, 6a Calle Poniente 8, Antigua: This small café feels like your own private courtyard. Stop by for a cup of Guatemalan espresso and lunch.

Casa Troccoli, H758+773, 5a Avenida Norte, Antigua: With its romantic architecture and expansive garden, date night should go smoothly at Casa Troccoli. Its red sangria is a great way to cool off, so check it out for a quick drink or a meal.

The ability to write a good essay is a skill that is highly valued in academia. Essays are ubiquitous, used in numerous subjects to assess a range of skills from comprehension and understanding to the ability to argue persuasively. What distinguishes a "good" essay from a mediocre one, however, can often seem like an enigma. Is it the choice of words? The depth of research? Or perhaps the structure? In truth, it's a combination of these elements and more. This guide aims to demystify the process and set you on the path to writing essays that not only earn top marks but also become examples for others to follow.

When it comes to writing a good essay, structure is pivotal. Just like a building needs a strong foundation, your essay requires a well-organized framework to support your arguments. Typically, an academic essay should include an introduction, a body containing multiple paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Introduction: This is your first chance to grab the reader’s attention. It should introduce the topic and contain your thesis statement, which we’ll discuss in more detail below.

Body: This is the meat of your essay, where you present your arguments and evidence to support your thesis.

Conclusion: This is where you wrap things up, summarizing your arguments and reinforcing your thesis, without introducing new information.

Organizing your thoughts into a coherent structure will not only make your essay easier to read, but it will also make it more persuasive. A well-structured essay guides the reader through the argument in a way that is logical and compelling, leading them to the conclusion you desire.

The first step to writing a good essay is selecting a topic that is both interesting and manageable. If you choose a topic that you are passionate about, the research and writing process will be much more engaging. However, make sure your topic is not so broad that it becomes unmanageable, or so narrow that there is not enough material to support your thesis.

Once you have your topic, the next step is research. Utilize libraries, academic databases, and other credible sources to gather material. Be wary of information from unverified websites, as they may not be reliable. Aim to find a balance between primary sources (original research, interviews, etc.) and secondary sources (analysis or interpretation of original work) to create a robust argument.

A thesis statement is a single sentence that encapsulates the main argument or focus of your essay. It should be specific, clear, and arguable. A good thesis not only states your position but also gives an idea of how you will support this claim.

Examples:

Good Thesis: "The environmental policies of the 1970s have played a significant role in combating climate change, as evidenced by improved air quality, cleaner water, and increased awareness."

Bad Thesis: "Environmental policies are good."

The first thesis provides a clear argument and hints at how the writer will support it, whereas the second thesis is vague and uninformative.

The introduction serves as the doorway into your essay. It should grab the reader's attention, introduce the topic, and present the thesis statement. There are various ways to hook your reader, from startling statistics to intriguing questions or relevant anecdotes.

For example, if your essay is about the impact of social media on mental health, you might start with a statistic: "According to a recent study, 56% of young adults reported experiencing anxiety or depression due to social media usage."

After grabbing the reader's attention, provide some background information to contextualize your topic, and then present your thesis statement, guiding your reader into the body of your essay.

The body of your essay is where you make your arguments and support them with evidence. Each paragraph should focus on a single point or idea, introduced by a topic sentence. After stating your point, provide evidence to support it, which can include data, quotes from experts, or examples from personal experience. Finally, analyze your evidence, explaining how it supports your point and ties back to your thesis.

Remember to use transition words or phrases between paragraphs to guide the reader through your argument coherently. Consistency in your arguments and maintaining the flow will make your essay more convincing.

The conclusion is your final opportunity to reinforce your thesis and leave a lasting impression on your reader. Do not introduce new arguments here; instead, summarize the main points you have made, emphasizing their importance and relevance. You can also restate your thesis in a new way, making sure to reinforce the arguments you have made throughout your essay.

A good conclusion also provides closure. It can refer back to the introduction or some significant point in the essay, coming full circle and giving a sense of completion.
