High School football: CCS board approves changes to its playoff format

MONTEREY – In an effort to create a fairer playing field in the postseason for football this fall, the Central Coast Section Board of Managers has approved changes to its playoff system.

Currently, leagues in the Central Coast Section are classified by strength, with “A” leagues being the strongest, “C” the weakest. The playoffs are categorized into different divisions, with the Open or Division I being the strongest. Teams earn points through the season that help determine what division they fall into for the playoffs. For example a win over an “A” league team earns more points than a win over a “C” league team. Often “A” league football teams come from schools with high enrollment or private schools with strong athletic programs.

Among the changes passed for the 2024 season is a rule that prohibits “A” league teams from playing in Division V, regardless of their point total.

Two years ago Palo Alto was knocked down to Division V based on points as an “A” league team. The Vikings ran through the playoffs, facing Stevenson in the first round. Aragon of San Mateo did the same in 2022.

“It was an unfair playing field,” Stevenson football coach Kyle Cassamas said. “I lived it. It was more (about) how can we make sure to keep our players safe before talking Xs and Os.”

Stevenson is a member of the Santa Lucia Division of the Pacific Coast Athletic League, which is a “C” league.

“It’s fairer for the ‘C’ League schools,” Carmel coach Golden Anderson said. “I mean, what did you prove playing someone (with) four times your enrollment? The gap is not as wide. But there are still a lot of inequities.”

The Padres, who are in a “B” league, stand to benefit from the changes as well, as no “B” league school will be forced into Division I or II this fall.

Last season Carmel went 10-0 in the Mission Division, producing enough points in the old system to earn a road game in the CCS Division II playoffs against eventual state champion Soquel of the Gabilan Division, an “A” league. The Padres lost 35-14.

“I have been very critical that the goalposts continue to move between league play and the playoffs,” Anderson said. “You are basing your league on your strength. When we get to the playoffs, it was thrown out the window. I don’t think it’s very healthy.”

Had this format been in place last year, the Padres would have been placed in Division III, with the likes of Alisal, Scotts Valley and Palma.

“I believe ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ leagues are separated for a reason,” Anderson. “This is a bit of a compromise of what was proposed last year. Sure, it’s a step in the right direction.”

A proposal last year was that “A” league teams could only participate in Divisions I and II.

“It was shot down because I think we were trying to overcorrect the problem,” CCS commissioner David Grissom said.

Under the changes, Divisions III and IV will be comprised of teams from both “A” and “B” leagues based on points.

“That’s the way it should be,” said Palma coach Jeff Carnazzo, whose team won the Division III state title last season. “It’s definitely a more even playing field. You needed to have an area that has a mixture of both divisions.”

Despite being forced to forfeit three wins last fall because of using an ineligible player, Palma still would’ve been in Division III based on its point total.

“At the end of the day, we have no control over what the system will be,” said Carnazzo. “We just have to go out and play the games.”

While the playoffs are considered a reward, knowing that an “A” league team won’t be awaiting them should give Stevenson a different outlook should the Pirates make the playoffs next season.

“Sure it has,” Cassamas said. “Making the playoffs is exciting. Going against the odds of playing an ‘A’ league team like Palo Alto is a completely different kind of football. We have to get there first. But this does potentially open things up.”

The Padres, who have three “A” league caliber non-league opponents on their schedule this season, won’t have to worry about being penalized for attempting to improve their program with a beefed-up schedule.

“I just think as a coach you play wherever the rules put us,” Anderson said. “But there is a reason we have equity leagues. This sport is about numbers.”

While a majority of playoff teams will likely still come from “A” leagues, the expectation is it will at least eliminate some of the first round mismatches we’ve seen in all divisions since the format was adopted.

“I still think we have the worst system in the state,” Seaside coach Al Avila said. “This is all about the state playoffs. You have to go by (enrollment) size in football. You can’t rely on two guys like in basketball or a stud on the mound in baseball. Football is just a different animal.”

While Avila – whose Spartans also fell to Palo Alto in the 2022 semifinals – called it a step forward, his belief is a lot of “A” caliber schools will schedule lighter preseasons to keep their point total down for the postseason to slip into the lower divisions.

“A lot of these coaches don’t want to play a beefed-up preseason because of the points,” Avila said. “That’s the thinking now. It’s not about league titles. It’s about trying to position yourself for a CCS title. The bigger schools up north are still controlling this.”

Baltimore bridge replacement will take 4 years, almost $2B

By Brian Witte | Associated Press

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland plans to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge in just over four years at an estimated cost between $1.7 billion and $1.9 billion, a state transportation official said Thursday.

The state plans to build a new span by fall of 2028, said David Broughton, a spokesperson for the Maryland Department of Transportation. He said the cost estimate is preliminary, and detailed engineering specifics have not been confirmed.

As salvage efforts continue, authorities also announced late Wednesday they had recovered the body of a fifth person who was missing after the bridge’s March 26 collapse, which shut down the port of Baltimore, one of the busiest ports in the country.

Six members of a roadwork crew plunged to their deaths when a container ship lost power and crashed into one of the bridge’s supporting columns. The Key Bridge Response Unified Command announced that the victim found Wednesday was identified as Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez, 49, of Glen Burnie, Maryland. All of the victims were Latino immigrants who came to the United States from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

“We continue to pray for Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez, his family and all those who love him, acknowledging the anguish they have experienced since the Key Bridge collapsed,” Gov. Wes Moore said in a statement Thursday. “We pray for comfort, we pray for healing, and we pray for peace in knowing that their loved one has finally come home.”

Salvage teams found one of the missing construction vehicles Wednesday and notified the Maryland State Police, officials said. State police investigators and Maryland Transportation Authority Police officers and the FBI responded to the scene and recovered the body inside a red truck. The state police underwater recovery team and crime scene unit also assisted.

Meanwhile, the broker for the bridge’s insurance policy confirmed Thursday that a $350 million payout will be made to the state of Maryland in what is expected to be the first of many payouts related to the collapse.

Chubb, the company that insured the bridge, is preparing to make the $350 million payment, according to WTW, the broker. Douglas Menelly, a spokesperson for WTW, on Thursday confirmed plans for the payout, which was first reported by The Wall Street Journal. Chubb did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

The Maryland Transportation Authority said Thursday that the state’s treasurer filed a claim on the day of the bridge’s collapse “against our $350 million property policy and put on notice our $150 million liability policy first tier carrier on behalf of MDTA.”

“We expect the full property policy to be paid very shortly,” the agency said in a news release.

Maryland transportation officials noted that the state’s estimates for the cost to rebuild the bridge are in line with similar projects of this scale and complexity. Federal funding, insurance proceeds and other reimbursements will bring a variety of resources toward the rebuild and recovery effort, the officials said, and the state is pursuing other recovery options to minimize net cost to taxpayers and toll customers.

The Dali container ship has been stationary amid the wreckage since the collapse, but crews plan to refloat and remove the ship, allowing more maritime traffic to resume through Baltimore’s port. Officials expect to have it removed by May 10, according to a Port of Baltimore news release.

Salvage and demolition crews were still working around the clock to clear wreckage from the collapse site. They’re now focused primarily on freeing the Dali from a massive steel span that came crashing down on the ship’s bow.

That will allow the ship to be refloated and guided back into the Port of Baltimore. It will also allow most maritime traffic to resume through the busy East Coast port.

On Thursday morning, crews were preparing for a controlled demolition that will break down the largest remaining span and send it tumbling into the water. Then a massive hydraulic grabber will lift the resulting sections of steel onto barges.

The hydraulic grabber, which officials have called the largest in the country, was also in motion Thursday morning. Moving ever so slowly, the giant claw descended into the depths of the Patapsco River and emerged with a steel beam in its trusses. It was operating in tandem with the Chesapeake 1000, one of the largest cranes on the Eastern Seaboard.

Associated Press journalists Denise Lavoie in Richmond, Virginia, and Lea Skene in Baltimore, contributed to this report.

Trump jury hears key phone call about buying affair story

By Michael R. Sisak, Philip Marcelo, Eric Tucker and Jake Offenhartz | Associated Press

NEW YORK — Jurors in the hush money trial of Donald Trump heard a recording Thursday of him discussing with his then-lawyer and personal fixer a plan to purchase the silence of a Playboy model who has said she had an affair with the former president.

A visibly irritated Trump leaned forward at the defense table, and jurors appeared riveted as prosecutors played the September 2016 recording that attorney Michael Cohen secretly made of himself briefing his celebrity client on a plan to buy Karen McDougal’s story of an extramarital relationship.

Though the recording surfaced years ago, it is perhaps the most colorful piece of evidence presented to jurors so far to connect Trump to the hush money payments at the center of his criminal trial in Manhattan. It followed hours of testimony from a lawyer who negotiated the deal for McDougal’s silence and admitted to being stunned that his hidden-hand efforts might have contributed to Trump’s White House victory.

“What have we done?” attorney Keith Davidson texted the then-editor of the National Enquirer, which had buried stories of sexual encounters to prevent them surfacing in the final days of the bitterly contested presidential race. “Oh my god,” came the response from Dylan Howard.

“There was an understanding that our efforts may have in some way — strike that — our activities may have in some way assisted the presidential campaign of Donald Trump,” Davidson told jurors, though he acknowledged under cross-examination that he dealt directly with Cohen and never Trump.

The testimony from Davidson was designed to directly connect the hush money payments to Trump’s presidential ambitions and to bolster prosecutors’ argument that the case is about interference in the 2016 election rather than simply sex and money. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has sought to establish that link not just to secure a conviction but also to persuade the public of the significance of the case, which may be the only one of four Trump prosecutions to reach trial this year.

“This is sort of gallows humor. It was on election night as the results were coming in,” Davidson explained. “There was sort of surprise among the broadcasters and others that Mr. Trump was leading in the polls, and there was a growing sense that folks were about ready to call the election.”

Davidson is seen as a vital building block for the prosecution’s case that Trump and his allies schemed to bury unflattering stories in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election. He represented both McDougal and adult film actor Stormy Daniels in negotiations that resulted in the purchase of rights to their claims of sexual encounters with Trump and those stories getting squelched, a tabloid industry practice known as “catch-and-kill.”

Davidson is one of multiple key players testifying in advance of Cohen, the star prosecution witness who paid Daniels $130,000 for her silence and also recorded himself, weeks before the election, telling Trump about a plan to purchase McDougal’s story so that it would never come out.

At one point in the recording, Cohen revealed that he had spoken to then-Trump Organization Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg about “how to set the whole thing up with funding.” To which Trump can be heard responding: “What do we got to pay for this? One-fifty?”

Trump can be heard suggesting that the payment be made with cash, prompting Cohen to object by saying “no” four times. Trump can then be heard saying “check” before the recording cuts off.

Trump’s lawyers sought earlier in the day to blunt the potential harm of Davidson’s testimony by getting him to acknowledge that he never had any interactions with Trump — only Cohen. In fact, Davidson said, he had never been in the same room as Trump until his testimony.

He also said he was unfamiliar with the Trump Organization’s record-keeping practices and that any impressions he had of Trump himself came through others.

“I had no personal interactions with Donald Trump. It either came from my clients, Mr. Cohen or some other source, but certainly not him,” Davidson said.

The line of questioning from Trump attorney Emil Bove appeared intended to cast Trump as removed from the negotiations and to suggest that Cohen was handling the hush-money matters on his own.

Bove also noted that Davidson had been involved in similar payments for clients that had nothing to do with presidential politics, grilling him about previous instances in which he solicited money to suppress embarrassing stories, including one involving wrestler Hulk Hogan.

By the time Davidson negotiated hush money payments for McDougal and Daniels, Bove asked Davidson whether he was “pretty well versed in coming right up to the line without committing extortion, right?”

“I had familiarized myself with the law,” Davidson replied.

Earlier Thursday, jurors viewed a confidential agreement requiring Daniels to keep quiet about her claims that she had a tryst with the married Trump a decade earlier. The agreement, dated less than two weeks before the 2016 presidential election, called for her to receive $130,000 in exchange for her silence.

The money was paid by Cohen, and the agreement referred to both Trump and Daniels with pseudonyms: David Dennison and Peggy Peterson.

“It is understood and agreed that the true name and identity of the person referred to as ‘DAVID DENNISON’ in the Settlement Agreement is Donald Trump,” the document stated, with Trump’s name written in by hand.

After the payment was made, Trump’s company reimbursed Cohen and logged the payments to him as legal expenses, prosecutors have said in charging the former president with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records — a charge punishable by up to four years in prison.

While testifying Thursday, Davidson also recalled Cohen ranting to him about Trump in a phone conversation about a month after the 2016 election, complaining that he had been passed over for a job in the new administration and that Trump had yet to reimburse him for the Daniels payment.

He also recalled Cohen telling him that he and Trump were “very upset” when The Wall Street Journal published an article that exposed a separate $150,000 National Enquirer arrangement with McDougal, who has said she and Trump had an affair, just days before the election.

He was upset by the timing,” Davidson said of Cohen. “He stated his boss was very upset, and he threatened to sue Karen McDougal.”

Trump has pleaded not guilty and denied relationships with either woman, as well as any wrongdoing in the case.

Before the start of testimony, prosecutors requested $1,000 fines for each of four comments by Trump that they say violated a judge’s gag order barring him from attacking witnesses, jurors and others closely connected to the case. Such a penalty would be on top of a $9,000 fine that Judge Juan M. Merchan imposed Tuesday related to nine separate violations that he found.

Merchan did not immediately rule on the request for fresh sanctions, though he indicated he was not particularly concerned about one of the four statements flagged by prosecutors.

The prospect of further punishment underscores the challenges Trump the presidential candidate faces in adjusting to the role of criminal defendant subject to rigid courtroom protocol that he does not control. It also remains to be seen whether any rebuke from the court will lead Trump to adjust his behavior given the campaign trail benefit he believes he derives from painting the case as politically motivated.

Marina man accused in 45-year-old crime cannot be charged due to mental illness

Two Marina homicides from nearly 45 years ago have been solved according to law enforcement officials, but the suspect cannot be prosecuted due to mental incompetency, according to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office.

On Tuesday, District Attorney Jeannine Pacioni and Marina Police Chief Randy Hopkins announced that Jurn Norris, 69, formally from Marina had been identified as the perpetrator in the killings of Helga DeShon and Uicha Malgieri, both young military spouses slain in their apartments in 1979.

According to the District Attorney’s Office, they have not been able to file charges against Norris because he is incompetent to stand trial due to severe mental illness.

“Based upon a thorough review of Norris’s records and in-person interviews with Norris conducted by members of the Cold Case Task Force and Marina Police Department, the District Attorney’s Office has concluded that Norris would not be found competent to stand trial and that there is no reasonable likelihood that he would be deemed competent to stand trial within two years,” reads the press statement from the District Attorney’s Office. “He has been diagnosed with multiple mental health disorders and is gravely mentally ill.”

Following this, the District Attorney’s Office announced that they cannot file charges against Norris for the killings, adding that in the “extremely unlikely” event that Norris’s mental state substantially improved, the case could be re-evaluated at that time.

Norris is currently under federal civil commitment in another state. He’s being supervised and has been receiving inpatient mental health treatment in a locked facility for decades.

Norris was initially identified as a suspect in the case decades ago, after a neighbor of Malgieri told police she had an unsettling interaction with him Aug. 21, 1979. Norris showed up to her house while her husband was at work and asked to enter the apartment and wait until noon. The neighbor said Norris made a series of inappropriate comments including telling the woman she could be a “nude model.”

At the time, Norris was 25 years old and had been discharged from the Army in May 1979 after allegedly attacking and strangling another soldier while stationed in Germany in 1978. The soldier was a young woman who survived and identified Norris as the attacker.

On Aug. 25, 1979, Norris stabbed his wife, also a soldier at Fort Ord, with an ice pick, fled the scene and returned to the neighbor’s house to ask for her husband’s money. His wife survived the attack.

On Sept. 25, 1979, 27-year-old Uicha Malgieri was found strangled to death in her apartment on Cosky Drive in Marina. Malgieri, originally from South Korea, was married to a U.S. Army specialist stationed at Fort Ord and worked as a housekeeper in Carmel. At first, her husband was arrested for the crime, but was released without any charges and later cleared as a suspect.

Two weeks later, on Oct. 9, 1979, 21-year-old Helga DeShon was found strangled to death in her apartment, also on Cosky Drive in Marina. DeShon was originally from Germany, and married to a U.S. Army sergeant also stationed at Fort Ord. That’s when police connected the two crimes because of their proximity, the method of homicide and the fact that both women were from outside the United States. Both victims were also strangled on a Tuesday morning while their husbands were at work.

On Nov. 11, 1979, Norris kidnapped his wife on the way to a marriage counseling appointment and threatened to kill her. He returned to their residence without harming her.

In December 1979, Norris was sentenced to 180 days in jail for stabbing his wife.

However, on Jan. 8, 1980, Norris shot his wife multiple times. She survived the shooting. Then he was convicted of assault with intent to commit murder and sentenced to federal prison.

During this time Norris remained a prime suspect in the murders of DeShon and Malgieri, but no arrests were made.

“DNA testing did not exist at the time, and the physical evidence was inconclusive using the technology that was then available,” the press statement reads.

In 2016, Marina Police Department conducted a review of unsolved homicides that had occurred in the city. Advancements in technology allowed detectives to submit evidence again and they had the opportunity to re-interview witnesses. The District Attorney’s Office determined that sufficient evidence existed to establish Norris’s identity as the perpetrator of the murders and charges would be filed if he were mentally competent to stand trial.

The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office Cold Case Task Force received a $535,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice back in January 2022. The grant, titled Fiscal Year 2021 Prosecuting Cold Cases Using DNA provides funding to support forensic testing and investigative cold cases where DNA from a suspect has been identified.

Functional Mechanism:

As you’ve already come to know from this CONOCB2 review, Conolidine exerts its pharmacological effects through multiple mechanisms of action. One of its primary functions is as a modulator of pain perception. Conolidine acts on various neurotransmitter systems in the brain, including the opioid and cannabinoid receptors, to attenuate pain signals. By interacting with these receptors, Conolidine helps regulate the transmission of pain impulses, resulting in analgesic effects.

Furthermore, Conolidine exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting inflammatory pathways in the body. It suppresses the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators, thereby reducing inflammation and swelling. This dual action on pain perception and inflammation makes Conolidine a promising candidate for the management of various painful conditions.

Safety:

One of the key advantages of Conolidine is its favorable safety profile. In preclinical studies, Conolidine has demonstrated low toxicity and minimal adverse effects, even at high doses. Unlike conventional pain medications, which often carry the risk of gastrointestinal ulcers, renal toxicity, and cardiovascular complications, Conolidine is well-tolerated and does not cause significant harm to vital organs.

Moreover, Conolidine does not possess addictive properties, making it a safer alternative to opioid analgesics. Its mechanism of action differs from that of opioids, reducing the risk of dependence and withdrawal symptoms. This makes Conolidine particularly suitable for long-term use in chronic pain management, without the concerns associated with opioid therapy.

Clinical Significance:

The clinical significance of Conolidine lies in its potential to address unmet medical needs in pain management. Chronic pain conditions, such as neuropathic pain, arthritis, and fibromyalgia, pose significant challenges for patients and healthcare providers alike. Conventional treatments often provide inadequate relief or come with intolerable side effects, leading to poor quality of life and functional impairment.

Conolidine offers a promising solution to this dilemma. Preclinical studies have shown that Conolidine effectively alleviates pain in various animal models of chronic pain. These findings have paved the way for clinical trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Conolidine in human subjects. Early results from these trials are promising, suggesting that Conolidine holds great potential as a novel analgesic agent for the management of chronic pain.

Furthermore, Conolidine’s anti-inflammatory properties make it a valuable asset in the treatment of inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. By targeting the underlying inflammation, Conolidine not only relieves pain but also helps mitigate disease progression and tissue damage.

Anti-inflammatory Properties:

In addition to its analgesic effects, Conolidine possesses potent anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is a common underlying factor in many chronic pain conditions, contributing to tissue damage and exacerbating pain sensitivity. Conolidine acts by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory mediators, such as cytokines and prostaglandins, thereby reducing inflammation and alleviating pain.

Moreover, Conolidine modulates immune responses by regulating the activity of immune cells involved in the inflammatory process. By suppressing excessive immune activation, Conolidine helps restore immune homeostasis and mitigate inflammation-related tissue damage. This dual action on pain and inflammation makes Conolidine a promising candidate for the management of chronic inflammatory conditions.

What to stream: Crank up the adrenaline with these stunt-filled action films

By Katie Walsh, Tribune News Service

With David Leitch’s love letter to stunt professionals, “The Fall Guy” hitting theaters, and rumblings of a potential Academy Award for stunts on the horizon (something Leitch has advocated for), it’s the perfect time to fire up some of the best movies with the finest stunts that you can find on streaming. Of course this is in no way a comprehensive list, just some suggestions to get the juices flowing during your pre- or post- “Fall Guy” streaming session.

Plus, stunts were an integral part to the early advent of cinema, over a hundred years ago. Audiences were so startled by the Lumiere Brothers’ film “The Arrival of the Train at the Station,” they ran out of the theater. And filmmakers have been thrilling audiences since then with action-packed feats of derring-do, from Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton to Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves.

Keanu Reeves, left, stars in John Wick: Chapter 4.Keanu Reeves, left, stars in John Wick: Chapter 4.” (Murray Close/Lionsgate/TNS)

It’s always a good idea to start at the beginning, so start with Buster Keaton’s own cinematic train opus, the 1926 silent film “The General,” about a stolen locomotive with his lady love on board. You’ll be dazzled by Keaton’s performance, and witness how modern stunts evolved from, and pay homage to his work. Stream it on Prime Video, Tubi, Kanopy, or rent it on other platforms. Another pioneering stunt performer, Harold Lloyd starred in the 1923 film “Safety Last!” which is streaming on Max, Kanopy, the Criterion Channel and Tubi, so add that to the list as well.

Of course, modern Hollywood stunts would not be what they are today without the influence of Hong Kong action cinema, especially star Jackie Chan. After a disappointing Hollywood experience, Chan channeled his energy into the “Police Story” franchise, which became a massive blockbuster hit in Asia and Europe. Chan directed the first two films in the franchise, and utilized his Jackie Chan Stunt Team to create some of the most incredible stunts put to film. They are largely considered to be some of the best action films of all time. Stream “Police Story” and “Police Story 2” on Max.

We couldn’t talk about stunts on film without mentioning Tom Cruise and the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, which sees Cruise executing more and more daring stunts, including the eye-popping motorcycle mountain jump that he pulled off in the most recent film “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.” Stream the entire franchise, all seven movies (it’s so worth it), on Paramount+.

Back in 1999, a stuntman named Chad Stahelski doubled Keanu Reeves on “The Matrix,” an action film that greatly advanced stunt work. Some 15 years later, Stahelski would direct Reeves in the “John Wick” franchise, their own love letter to stunt work, created in partnership with Leitch, who would go on to make his directorial debut with the chilly Cold War actioner “Atomic Blonde” (2017) starring Charlize Theron. Stream “The Matrix” on Netflix and Max, stream the “John Wick” franchise on Peacock and rent “Atomic Blonde” on all digital platforms to see a bit of “The Fall Guy” DNA.

Finally, no mention of stunt movies would be complete without a shout out to what may be the best action movie of the 21st century so far, George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road.” This mad dash across the desert involved hordes of war boys clinging to vehicles tearing across the Namibian landscape, leaping and battling from swinging poles and scaffolding, motorcycle grannies, feisty wives, a steely Theron and a taciturn Tom Hardy. The film won several Oscars and would have no doubt scored a stunt Oscar if that was an option. It’s always the right time to stream “Fury Road,” and it also serves as prep for the prequel, “Furiosa,” which roars into theaters on May 24. Stream “Mad Max: Fury Road” on Max or rent it elsewhere.

It’s the last Free Comic Book Day at the place where it was created

Joe Field needed something to write about.

“I came up with the idea for Free Comic Book Day when I was a columnist for an industry trade magazine,” says Field, who is the owner of the Flying Colors Comics and Other Cool Stuff store in Concord. “I was scratching for ideas when my deadline was looming, looked out the front window of my shop to see a long line of people and none of them were coming into my shop. They were headed next door to Baskin Robbins for Free Scoop Night.

“I thought ‘comics are cooler than ice cream — let’s do this!’ So I wrote a column outlining the idea.”

That was 2001 and the first Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) was held in 2002. It was a massive hit right from Year One, with hundreds of comic book shops taking place in the promotion of giving out free publications to those who visited the participating stores. It now stands as, by far, the biggest annual event at comic book stores worldwide.

“The first FCBD was on May 4, 2002, so this year’s event, also on May 4, is the 23rd annual Free Comic Book Day,” Field says. “Over the last 22 years, FCBD shops have given away tens of millions of free comic books in more than 2,000 shops in more than 60 countries the world over.”

Yet, this year’s Free Comic Book Day — which just happens to coincide with the annual Star Wars celebration on May 4 (“May the Fourth Be With You”) — will also be the last one that will be held at the place where the idea was first hatched.

To the disappointment of comic book fans all over Contra Costa County, Field’s Flying Colors Comics and Other Cool Stuff store, at Treat Boulevard and Oak Grove Road in Concord, is set to close in early 2025.

“This year’s FCBD at Flying Colors will be the final one in the shop where the international pop culture event was founded,” Field says. “When our last lease expired, our landlord would only give us three years and gave no option to renew. That lease expires in January 2025, and I tried to get an extension, but was told the owners of this center really wanted to put in a bagel shop. I can’t tell you how many sleepless nights this has given me and my wife, Libby, the co-owner of Flying Colors.”

(Aric Crabb/Bay Area News Group)

So, what’s the next move? Field says that they are looking for a way to continue on with the business in a new fashion and new location.

“We’re very hopeful and now actually pretty excited by what the future of Flying Colors could be,” he says. “There are a lot of unknowns — like how many of our faithful customers will want to create a new habit of going to a different spot to support us? How many new customers can we cultivate moving to a different spot? How strong will the market for comics and graphic novels be over the next bunch of years? Can we afford to do this when we are already technically past the standard retirement date?

“Our hope, our prayer, really, is that we continue to build community and continue to spread happiness through our comic book business. That’s when everything will be a success.”

Yet, there will be time for planning for “what’s next” in the days to come. Right now, Field has to concentrate on hosting the final Free Comic Book Day at the place where it all began.

“This Saturday’s event will be bittersweet,” he says. “This shop has been our home for more than 35 years, so as the days, weeks and months wind down to the closing of this location, we’ll cherish all the good memories we’ve made here and hope that the next version of Flying Colors will be a fresh start to something wonderful.”

Whatever happens next for Flying Colors, Field’s legacy in the industry he loves so dearly is pretty much set in stone following the unmitigated success of Free Comic Book Day.

“For many stores, it’s their busiest day of the year and one real push for outreach to new customers,” says Ryan Higgins, owner of Comics Conspiracy in Sunnyvale. “If even one out of 100 people who stop by on FCBD picks up comics regularly after that, it’s a huge boon to the shop.

“The industry is forever indebted to Joe for the day.”

SF Giants’ lineup doesn’t get it done in loss to Red Sox

The Red Sox used three pitchers compared to five for the Giants, but the story was the hitting.

A night after getting shut out, San Francisco mustered one hit after the fourth inning and five overall in a 6-2 loss. Many of the Giants’ at-bats were competitive and produced hard-hit balls, but not enough found grass. San Francisco registered the three best exit velocities of the night, but didn’t get much to show for it.

The Giants (14-17) are 5-10 on the road this year and could get swept at Fenway Park on Thursday.

“There was some good swings today, really the past couple of games,” manager Bob Melvin told reporters postgame. “It’s frustrating — it’s about results, and we’re not getting the results yet.”

“We’re just not stringing enough together to put pressure on teams,” Melvin added. “We either go down quickly, or we’re behind in counts, and we’re just not getting in good counts to hit.”

For his first home run as a Giant, Tom Murphy scaled the Green Monster with a lined shot off a hanging slider. Murphy’s 407-foot solo shot left his bat at 106.4 mph.

The Giants signed the veteran catcher as an offense-first complement to starter Patrick Bailey. But before Wednesday, he was hitting .074 in 10 games — one of many Giants who had a slow April.

Murphy’s sudden strike broke an early scoreless stalemate, as Red Sox starter Kutter Crawford entered the evening with an American League-leading 1.35 ERA and looked the part. Former Giants pitching coach Andrew Bailey has done tremendous work with Crawford and the rest of Boston’s staff.

The Giants have struggled in Blake Snell’s spot in the rotation — either with the reigning National League Cy Young winner on the mound or with an alternative in place.

“On this particular turn, it hasn’t been good,” Melvin said. “If we win half those games, it’s a little different at this point. But the fact of the matter is, this turn in the rotation has been a tough one.”

In Fenway Park, San Francisco deployed the opener strategy, starting left-hander Erik Miller against the lefty-heavy top of Boston’s lineup. The Giants considered calling up Mason Black, who has a minuscule ERA in Triple-A but instead recalled Daulton Jeffries to be the bulk arm.

Miller worked around consecutive walks for a scoreless first inning. Jeffries walked the leadoff man in the second but also escaped with a scoreless frame.

But when Jeffries allowed an infield single to start the third inning, the Red Sox had their third leadoff man on in as many innings. They were due to cash in.

Jeffries was victimized by the Monster on a Rafael Devers double that was lofted off the wall with a .010 expected batting average. But Devers’ moonball scored one of two Boston runs in the third, putting San Francisco behind 2-1.

A cheeky two-out bunt from Mike Yastrzemski with runners on second and third knotted the score in the fourth. Playing at Fenway Park, where his grandfather became an inner-circle Hall of Famer, is always special for the outfielder, as is his baseball I.Q.

But Boston answered immediately, again putting the leadoff man on against Jeffries and again using the Monster to drive him in. Then a stand-up triple from Jarren Duran made it 4-2.

The Giants offense needs all the help it can get, and it got little in Boston. Jung Hoo Lee’s lineout in the fifth would have left 14 of 30 ballparks. Right after that loud out, Jorge Soler snapped his bat over his leg in frustration because his 110.7 mph drive landed right in Devers’ glove.

Boston added to its lead with a run off Taylor Rogers and Luke Jackson as the Giants’ bullpen started to run out of middle-inning options. The recently acquired Mitch White also served up a run in the seventh on a two-out double to catcher Connor Wong.

The Red Sox could’ve scored more, too; they went 4-for-16 with runners in scoring position.

Meanwhile, Crawford held the Giants hitless in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. San Francisco also went down in order in the eighth, despite another hard-hit ball from Lee, extending its hitless streak.

Up four runs, the Red Sox didn’t need to use their closer. Matt Chapman singled for San Francisco’s first hit since the fourth inning, but Thairo Estrada grounded into a double play to end it. The Giants will need more hits and more breaks to avoid a sweep in Boston.

The Science Behind GlucoPure: How It Works

Delving into GlucoPure’s workings reveals a fascinating interplay between nature and science, a symphony of mechanisms harmonizing to support healthy blood sugar levels. Understanding how GlucoPure operates is akin to unraveling the intricate dance of hormones and metabolic processes that influence daily health.

GlucoPure targets the foundation of blood sugar management: the balance of hormones responsible for hunger and satiety. It meticulously modulates the hunger-controlling hormone, paving the way for reduced sugar cravings and a more regulated appetite. This approach is pivotal, as unmanaged cravings can lead to spikes in blood sugar levels, undermining efforts to maintain health.

The role of sleep in our well-being cannot be overstated, and GlucoPure embraces this by incorporating sleep-enhancing compounds into its formula. At night, our bodies undergo a critical phase of repair and hormonal balance. GlucoPure supports this natural process, aiding in reducing cortisol levels—a hormone linked to stress and the accumulation of belly fat. This regulation is essential for not only managing weight but also stabilizing blood sugar levels.

Moreover, GlucoPure enhances the function of leptin, another key player in the hormonal orchestra that controls hunger. By boosting leptin levels, GlucoPure assists in curbing overeating and the consumption of sugar-laden foods, encouraging healthier eating patterns. This mechanism is a cornerstone of its effectiveness, as it directly addresses the challenge of managing dietary habits that can affect blood sugar levels.

Beyond its impact on hunger and sleep, GlucoPure takes a comprehensive approach to health by preventing the formation of visceral fat, improving blood circulation, and reducing the risk of heart disease. Its formula is rich in antioxidants, crucial in strengthening the immune system and protecting cells from oxidative stress. This broad spectrum of benefits underscores the holistic nature of GlucoPure’s mechanism of action.

GlucoPure reviews often highlight its ability to seamlessly integrate into daily life, offering a supportive role in managing blood sugar levels. The feedback from these reviews sheds light on the practical impacts of GlucoPure’s working mechanism, with many users reporting significant improvements in their health and well-being.

The GlucoPure formula benefits the Circulatory system immensely. Its ingredients foster the health of blood vessels, ensuring that blood flows freely and delivers essential nutrients and oxygen to organs and tissues. This supports heart health and ensures that every part of the body functions optimally.

Curbing of Hunger and Appetite

Unhealthy eating behaviors stand as significant barriers to health. GlucoPure addresses this by dampening the urge for unnecessary snacking and emotional eating, supporting balanced blood sugar levels and overall well-being.

Promotion of Restorative Sleep

Recognizing the integral role of sleep in health, GlucoPure includes compounds that encourage deep, restorative rest. Regulating cortisol and enhancing the balance of hunger-controlling hormones aids the body in entering a state of repair and metabolic efficiency during sleep.

Embracing GlucoPure is akin to choosing a guardian for your health, particularly in blood sugar management. This innovative supplement doesn’t just promise a passive benefit; it actively engages with your body’s mechanisms to ensure your blood sugar levels remain stable, your circulation vigorous, and your weight management efforts fruitful.
