For me, Mariah Carey has two distinct sounds I like to call Old Mariah and New Mariah. I’m not a fan of New Mariah, who started showing up with the release of Carey’s tenth album, E=MC² in 2008. To me, she chose image over sound and her subsequent releases didn’t do justice to that powerful voice that put her squarely in music history.
But up to that point? WOW!
Released in early 1995, Always Be My Baby became Mariah Carey’s eleventh chart topper on the US Billboard Hot 100, tying her with Madonna and Whitney Houston for most number-one singles for a female artist at the time.
A mid-tempo song, its lyrics describe the feeling of attachment and unity the singer feels towards her estranged lover, even though they are no longer together, she says he will always be a part of her and will “always be her baby” even after they move on.
FUN FACTS
Always Be My Baby spent two weeks at number one and also became Carey’s eighth chart-topper on the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart.
Mariah Carey directed the music video for Always Be My Baby.
Most scenes from the video were filmed at The Fresh Air Fund’s Camp Mariah, named after Carey for her generous support and dedication to Fresh Air Fund children.
Carey is Referred to as the “Songbird Supreme” by the Guinness World Records, she is noted for her five-octave vocal range, melismatic singing style, and signature use of the whistle register.
Enjoy!

Always Be My Baby
by Mariah Carey
Songwriters: Jermaine Dupri / Manuel Lonnie Seal / Mariah Carey
We were as one babe
For a moment in time
And it seemed everlasting
That you would always be mine
Now you wanna be free
So I’m letting you fly
‘Cause I know in my heart babe
Our love will never die, no
You’ll always be a part of me
I’m part of you indefinitely
Boy don’t you know you can’t escape me?
Ooh darling ’cause you’ll always be my baby
And we’ll linger on
Time can’t erase a feeling this strong
No way you’re never gonna shake me
Ooh darling ’cause you’ll always be my baby
I ain’t gonna cry no
And I won’t beg you to stay
If you’re determined to leave boy
I will not stand in your way
But inevitably
You’ll be back again
‘Cause you know in your heart babe
Our love will never end, no
You’ll always be a part of me
I’m part of you indefinitely
Boy don’t you know you can’t escape me
Ooh darling ’cause you’ll always be my baby
And we’ll linger on
Time can’t erase a feeling this strong
No way you’re never gonna shake me
Ooh darling ’cause you’ll always be my baby
I know that you’ll be back boy
When your days and your nights get a little bit colder
I know that you’ll be right back baby
Oh baby believe me it’s only a matter of time, time
You’ll always be a part of me
I’m part of you indefinitely
Boy don’t you know you can’t escape me
Ooh darling ’cause you’ll always be my baby
And we’ll linger on
Time can’t erase a feeling this strong
No way you’re never gonna shake me
Ooh darling ’cause you’ll always be my baby
You’ll always be a part of me
I’m part of you indefinitely
Boy don’t you know you can’t escape me
Ooh darling ’cause you’ll always be my baby
And we’ll linger on
Time can’t erase a feeling this strong
No way you’re never gonna shake me
Ooh darling ’cause you’ll always be my baby
You and I will always be
No way you’re never gonna shake me
No way you’re never gonna shake me
You and I will always be

I took the collective prompt of facial beauty to go with something that enhances a person’s beauty… the smile.
While a smile can add to facial beauty, a genuine smile also bolsters inner beauty, self-esteem and it’s even good for your health–mental and physical!
So smile like Sara in Hall & Oates very first top ten hit, Sara Smile.
I know SLS’ers of a certain age aren’t ready for this but the single that was released when many of us were teenagers will be FORTY-FOUR years old next month! Yeah, ain’t that a kick in the pants? Sara Smile was played several times at my Sweet Sixteen birthday party.
But you know what? The song that reached #4 on Billboard Hot 100 and was ranked #11 for 1976 is still a smooth classic that gets airplay on R&B, Adult Contemporary, and Pop stations and satellite radio.
FUN FACTS
Sara Smile was written about Hall’s then-girlfriend, Sara Allen. The couple were together for almost 30 years before breaking up in 2001.
Following the success of Sara Smile, the Atlantic Records label re-released the duo’s previous single, She’s Gone, which peaked at #60 on the Billboard Hot 100 when it was released in 1973, but went all the way to #7 behind the success of Sara Smile.
The album’s cover photo by Mick Jagger’s makeup designer Pierre LaRoche is a glitzy shot of Hall and Oates in heavy makeup. John Oates talked about the eye-catching image in Nick Tosches’ biography Dangerous Dances: “We decided that if we were going to put our faces on an album cover for the first time we wanted to do it in a big way. Pierre said, in that French accent of his, ‘I will immortalize you!’ And he just did. To this day it’s the only album cover that people ask us about.”

Sara Smile
by Hall & Oates
Songwriters: Daryl Hall / John Oates
Baby hair with a woman’s eyes
I can feel you watching in the night
All alone with me and we’re waiting for the sunlight
When I feel cold, you warm me
And when I feel I can’t go on, you come and hold me
It’s you and me forever
Sara smile
Won’t you smile a while for me, Sara
If you feel like leaving, you know you can go
But why don’t you stay until tomorrow?
If you want to be free, you know, all you got to do is say so
And when you feel cold, I’ll warm you
And when you feel you can’t go on, I’ll come and hold you
It’s you and me forever
Sara smile
Won’t you smile a while for me, Sara
Sara smile
Won’t you smile a while for me, Sara
Smile
Won’t you smile a while for me, Sara
Oh smile a while, won’t you laugh Sara
Make me feel like a man not keeping me crazy crazy
Smile a while

I admit to being one of the millions of people worldwide who pre-registered and prepaid for Disney+, then vegged out in front of my television beginning early on the morning of November 12th.
It wasn’t a perfect roll-out. Apps and devices crashed and some customers were locked out of their accounts (and still are).
I had no problems. Not one. Unless you called binge-watching twenty-one straight hours a problem.

Song Lyric Sunday | “Do It Again” – Steely Dan

Mention the band, Steely Dan, and most people think of Aja, their 1977 Grammy-winning, platinum album. However, their breakout hit Do It Again, was five years earlier from their first album, Can’t buy a Thrill.
Like many of their songs, it’s hard to make sense of the lyrics, which seem to be about some combination of addiction, second chances and the inevitability of fate. It’s an example of a Steely Dan song that doesn’t make literal sense, but creates a mood.
The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 18, 1972, and reached number 6 on the US charts in 1973, making it Steely Dan’s second highest charting single.
FUN FACTS
Steely Dan’s sound was very unusual, and when asked to explain it, they sometimes described it as “smart rock.”
Steely Dan is named after a dildo from the William Burroughs novel Naked Lunch. Donald Fagen recalled to Mojo magazine: “We had to come up with a name in a hurry and Walter and I were both Burroughs fans, though he was not known at the time. It was an in-joke- who’s going to know what Steely Dan was? And we figured that, like most of our bands in the past, it would fall apart after three months, so we didn’t think much about it.”
David Palmer fronted the band during their live show, and he sang Do It Again when the group played The Midnight Special in January 1973. But Donald Fagen sang the vocal on the album version. Fagen is reported to suffer with stage fright in the early years and mostly sang in the studio.
The video is from their Midnight Special appearance.

Do It Again
by Steely Dan
Songwriters: DONALD JAY FAGEN, WALTER CARL BECKER
In the mornin’ you go gunnin’ for the man who stole your water
And you fire till he is done in but they catch you at the border
And the mourners are all singin’ as they drag you by your feet
But the hangman isn’t hangin’ and they put you on the street
[Chorus]
You go back, Jack, do it again, wheels turnin’ ’round and ’round
You go back, Jack, do it again
When you know she’s no high climber then you find your only friend
In a room with your two timer, and you’re sure you’re near the end
Then you love a little wild one, and she brings you only sorrow
All the time you know she’s smilin’; you’ll be on your knees tomorrow
[Chorus]
Now you swear and kick and beg us that you’re not a gamblin’ man;
Then you find you’re back in Vegas with a handle in your hand
Your black cards can bring you money so you hide them when you’re able
In the land of milk and honey you must put them on the table
[Chorus]

Song Lyric Sunday | “You Should Be Mine (The Woo Woo Song)” – Jeffrey Osborne

Jeffrey Osborne has enjoyed a successful music career as lead singer of the 70s R&B Funk band, LTD, and as a solo artist.
One of his biggest solo pop hits, You Should Be Mine (The Woo Woo Song), reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart in 1986. On other US charts, You Should Be Mine peaked at #2 on both the Hot Black Singles and Adult Contemporary charts.
The Woo Woo Song is the title in parentheses because Jeffrey’s little daughter did not know the exact title. She identified the song saying “Daddy, sing ‘The Woo Woo Song’!” Jeffrey thus affectionately nicknamed the track.
FUN FACTS
The 17th episode of Cosby titled Valentine’s Day features Jeffrey Osborne guest starring and performing You Should Be Mine (The Woo Woo Song).
You Should Be Mine (The Woo Woo Song) appears on Jeffrey’s fourth album, Emotional.
Jeffrey was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the youngest of twelve children, with five brothers and six sisters. Osborne’s family was musically inclined and some of his siblings went on to have music careers—his brother, Billy Osborne, was his band-mate in L.T.D. Osborne’s father, Clarence “Legs” Osborne, was a popular trumpeter who played with Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington.
The song’s video has a smooth, easy feel, but it screams 80s because… blunt-cut hairstyles… and shoulder pads!

Song Lyric Sunday | “One of These Nights” – The Eagles

The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “Lost/Found/Hide/Seek.”
~~~~~~~~~~
As the title track from their 1975 album of the same name, One of These Nights became the Eagles’ second single to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart after Best of My Love and also helped propel the album to number one.
Lead singer Glenn Frey said the song is about putting things off. “We’ve all said, ‘One of these nights I’m gonna do something — get that girl, make that money, find that house.’ We all have our dreams – a vision we hope will come true someday. When that ‘someday’ will come is up to each of us.”
FUN FACT:
One of These Nights was influenced by R&B music and disco; according to Frey, he was listening to Spinners and Al Green records when he started writing the song. Frey started the writing process by composing the music, and Henley then started with the lyrics.
While they were recording the album in Miami, the band also shared a studio with the Bee Gees, and according to Henley, the “four-on-the-floor” bass-drum pattern is a nod to disco.
One of These Nights was a conscious attempt by the band to write something different from a country-rock and ballad-type song.
One of These Nights
by The Eagles
Songwriters: Glenn Frey / Don Henley
One of these nights, one of these crazy old nights
We’re gonna find out, pretty mama, what turns on your lights
The full moon is calling, the fever is high
And the wicked wind whispers and moans
You got your demons, you got your desires
Well, I got a few of my own
Oh, someone to be kind to in between the dark and the light
Oh, coming right behind you, swear I’m gonna find you, one of these nights
One of these dreams, one of these lost and lonely dreams, now
We’re gonna find one, mm, one that really screams
I’ve been searching for the daughter of the devil himself
I’ve been searching for an angel in white
I’ve been waiting for a woman who’s a little of both
And I can feel her but she’s nowhere in sight
Oh, loneliness will blind you in between the wrong and the right
Oh, coming right behind you, swear I’m gonna find you, one of these nights
One of these nights oh, in between the dark and the light
Coming right behind you, swear I’m gonna find you
Get you, baby, one of these nights
One of these nights (oh-oh-oh-oh oh-oh-oh-oh)
One of these nights (I can feel it, I can feel it)
One of these nights (coming right behind you, swear I’m gonna find you now)
One of these nights (and gets so dark, it’s so dark and cold)
One of these nights (one of these crazy crazy crazy nights)
One of these nights (swear I’m gonna find you coming right behind you)
One of these nights (oh)
One of these nights (and I want to say ah)
One of these nights (one of these, one of these)
One of these nights (coming right behind you, swear I’m gonna find you)
One of these nights (One of these nights, one of these crazy nights)
