READ THIS PIECE

This one right here.

Nicolas Kristoff, writing from Cairo last week during the government thug crackdown, wrote that it's 1776 in Tahrir Square. The piece I'm pointing you at is by Thomas Friedman, who is one of the Times' lifers — he lives and breathes foreign affairs, especially the Mideast. He describes himself sometimes as a disappointed realist; other people sometimes call him a bitter American chauvanist-slash-cynical bastard.

Go read what this bitter American cynical bastard has to say about Egyptians in Cairo.

Really.

Cairo . . .

There's a reason why the New York Times is America's Newspaper of Record.

Start with the photos on the front page . . .

Club Caine Update

From Joshua:

Matt,

Club Caine is still meeting at the Panera Bread in Schaumburg off Golf Road. We're meeting again this Friday, at 630 and we'll be finishing up discussion of the end of Blade of Tyshalle before moving on to Caine Black Knife next month. Feel free to let everyone know and it's great to see that overworld.tv has taken off so well.

Ring Around the Moon

So I'm wrapping my day — the capper on what is arguably the most amazing ten days of my life — and I take my beloved wolf-brother Aias out for a walk, and I discover a huge, beautiful, perfectly full moon just a-hangin' out there in the sky . . .

Being the pious pagan that I am, I tipped my hat in respectful salute . . . then when we turned back for home, I saw an  . . . I don't know, an icebow, I guess. A ring around the moon whose diameter spanned more than half the visible sky.

I can only imagine it was a feature of ice crystals in the atmosphere, like sun pillars are, because (this being the Midwest) it's about 8 degrees Fahrenheit out there, and the temprature's still falling.

I have no idea what such a sight is supposed to signify, but it felt significant. And it was unspeakably beautiful.

So I wanted to tell all of you about it.

That's all.

Good Job, and THANKS!

The first issue of OverWorld is fully funded. Over $8,500 in less than three days. Thanks to your generosity, this is gonna happen.

You people are awesome.

I'm told the page will stay up, because part of the whole Kickstarter thing is not only how much money is donated, but how many individual donors there are.

We're just gettin' started.

CHALLENGE GOAL

This from one of Caine's long-time pals, the inimitable Guy:

I threw this up elsewhere, but I don't know if everyone here is going elsewhere, so I'll repeat it, and Matt, if you want to make this a post by itself be my guest:

It is now about 15:15 PST on January 18th. The Caine comic is at $5,066 out of $8,500 needed. By 15:15 on January 19th, if at least $1,000 is pledged in total to the Kickstarter link on this blog, doesn't matter how many people it takes, I will breathe deep, crack open a beer, and match an additional $1,000.

If that goal is not met, then I will start the clock again on another 24 hours, and I will match $800, and subtract $200 each 24 hour countdown thereafter. This will go until I am able to make a matching contribution, or by lack of minimum donations this offer expires.

Time's ticking.

I continue to be humbled by the charity and enthusiasm of everyone around here.

Caine Loves You in a Non-Scary Heterosexual Way

There are some very generous fans out there. Even though I don't know all of you, Caine does.

He's always been a guy who knows who his friends are.

Hey.

The Forum is up at OverWorld TV. Go register.

Every little bit of traffic helps Caine look tasty to the Big Dogs.
