April in New England continues…

As I type this, the runners are off for this year’s Boston marathon. The weather is lousy. Chilly, windy, rainy. I’ve never run a marathon and don’t intend to, but last September I ran the Dingle half-marathon in wild conditions on the southwest Irish coast. It wasn’t cold, though. The Boston marathoners are much more experienced, no doubt, dealing with all sorts of conditions. Wish them well!

Everyone I know up here is beyond ready for a good stretch of warm days. The magnolias in Boston’s Back Bay are ready to burst into bloom, one of my favorite harbingers of w… Read More

Ah, yes, let it snow…in April

It’s snowing!

Ack. Having lived in the northeast my entire life, you’d think I’d be used to snow in April, and I guess I am–but that doesn’t mean I’m in the mood for it. Since I live in Vermont, I do run into dedicated skiers who love spring snow. I like to get out cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, but right now all I can think about are the crocuses, daffodils and lilies popping up under the snow.

The daffodils in the photo are in the Cotswolds in England, not here. Pretty, aren’t they? I took this shot a few years ago on a good “ramble.”

Swimming holes

On hot summer days, my six brothers and sisters and I used to love to jump in the streams that abound in the woods around our family homestead in small-town New England. Ice-cold water, rocks and mud didn’t phase us. Nowadays my running route (I signed up for another half-marathon!) takes me past a popular swimming hole near our home in Vermont. I snapped these photos last summer. It doesn’t look like this now! The ice has gone out of the river but the banks are still snow-covered. Before we know it, swimmers will back out here. Key, of course, is to stay safe!

Read Chapter 1 of THE RIVER HOUSE

With The River House hitting stores on March 27, you can read Chapter 1 here. Just scroll down and click on the link! I hope you enjoy this sneak peek of this story about childhood friends and new beginnings.

I’m thrilled RT Book Reviews has named The River House  a Top Pick! for April. I’ve been a subscriber since the magazine’s early days and attended its first convention in New York City. I won a copy of the beautiful earrings Princess Diana wore on her wedding day. I still have them. Only other thing I’ve ever won is a ham…

Happy reading!… Read More

Fresh Raspberry Pie Recipe

We enjoy local fresh-picked raspberries but luckily raspberries are available any time of year. For a taste of summer, try this recipe, a favorite with our family:

Bake a one-crust pie shell using recipe of your choice.

Wash and let dry 1 qt. of fresh raspberries. Simmer together 2/3 cup water and 1 cup of the berries for about 3 minutes. Blend 1 c. sugar and 3 Tbsp. cornstarch with 1/3 cup of water and added to the boiling berries and water. Stirring constantly, boil for one minute and then let cool.

Spread cooled pie shell with cream cheese (about 1/2 cup) and add the fresh uncooked berries (about 3 cRead More

Southwest Florida Reading Festival

Hello from sunny Fort Myers, Florida! I’m here along with other authors and lots of readers for today’s Southwest Florida Reading Festival. A nor’easter has been raging back home. One of the shots of downed power lines is around the corner from our son, but he’s fine. We’ve been in Florida for a week, and I’m looking forward to getting home tomorrow. The storm should wind down by then. What a great week it’s been as I work, walk, run, talk about books and writing with some wonderful readers and writers and, of course, enjoy the sunshine, green gras… Read More

Writing in winter

Is it almost February? Seriously? I’ve been deep into writing, putting the finishing touches on Impostor’s Lure, my next Sharpe and Donovan novel. Emma Sharpe and Colin Donovan are back from their honeymoon and get caught up in the search for a missing federal prosecutor. It takes place during a hot Boston summer. Perfect as I watch the snow fall here on my hilltop in Vermont! We were in Boston for a few days with the gang and Joe managed to fall on the ice while holding little Niamh. She’s fine (Joe made sure of that!) and he’s recovering from a banged-up knee.
