A trap called “Debt”
I had moved places and had relocated to Delhi in 2007. Into a new job, a new location, and amongst new mindsets.
With not so handsome package, I got into a job role of a Relationship Manager for High Net Worth clients of a renowned Indian private bank. With an eye-catching flashy designation on my visiting card, that of a Premium Relationship Manager – HNW, I was expected to represent the bank as a smart, flashy and charming banker to my HNW clients.
By being flashy I mean is, wearing expensive suits, shoes and watches. Taking out clients on expensive dinners. It was something, my not so fat salary could afford.
I started spending on credit cards, and trust you me, it was addictive. And then all of a sudden within six months, I had exhausted 90% of my credit limits of not one but two credit cards.
Trying to match and keep up to the standards of the role and the designation, brand reputation and the culture of the flashy city of Delhi, I didn’t realize I had got myself into a trap. I had to finally take a personal loan to pay off my debts on credit cards.
I managed somehow, and paid off that extremely expensive lifestyle, in the next four years. But learned a lesson. That was my first and the last financial blunder.
But my friends, it is not this story, my story, that I wanted to draw your attention to.
The actual story begins now.
I met someone in my new organization, someone who had been on that role for quite sometime but much experienced than me. He was a chain-smoker and a daily drinker but someone who was thoroughly professional in front of his customers. No body had ever complained about him. He was much senior to me and an absolutely nice man.
While interacting with him one day, I got to know, that he was stressed, so much that unknowingly he had expressed that he might suicide any day.
I was like, shocked to my core. Shaken. Completely.
Feeling that he needed some help, I helped him vent out his stress. By listening to him and his woes.
That was when he told me that he was living off credit cards and personal loans. Has two car loans and a home loan emi on his head. And every month the debt is just multiplying. Unable to pay the full amount of credit used on credit cards, he was paying minimum balance, had to take a personal loan to pay off his previous two cards, had two car loans that he had managed on high interest rates from some small finance companies. On top of that with a heavy home loan emi, he was so burdened, that he had started borrowing money from his friends and relatives. It had gone so bad that he had not spared even the cigarette shop owners, he was a regular customer to. He was borrowing money even from them.
I was speechless for a very long time. I tried but couldn’t speak a word. This was the condition of a banker with 12 years of experience, someone who was a great financial advisor to his clients but a pathetic financial planner for himself. Someone whose package was three times that of a newbie like me.
The trap, the deadly trap called “Debt” had left him nowhere.
You must be thinking why this post today and that too of an incident that happened years back. Actually today I happened to cross that branch, when I was passing by the road in front of that bank branch.
No, this post is neither on any tips on how to be better in financial planning. Although I was once a financial planner for my clients but am now a financial planner only for my finances. I don’t recommend or advise people anymore. There are great professionals in this field these days. Better equipped and updated than I am.
I can only advise one thing. If you want to live a happy, peaceful and prosperous life, keep yourself off from debts. As much as you can.
One thing which you should always keep in mind is to keep your monthly debts below 30% of your monthly income.
Stay off this Trap called “Debt”.
I don’t know if knowing what happened to my colleague would help you or not, but I am sure you want to know.
That colleague is no more. He committed suicide six months later, that same year.
At times in life, we have to learn from other’s experiences too. It is not mandatory to make that mistake yourself and then learn.
This was one of my experiences. I am sure you too have had similar experiences of bad financial management or planning.
If any one of you is unknowingly or maybe consciously getting into this trap, thinking, you have planned how to get out of it, trust me, it is a risky proposition.

How to become a Corporate Trainer?
It was a week back when I got a message on LinkedIn and then a call, the next day. It was, from one of my connections who wanted to know and understand, “How to become a Corporate Trainer?”
So this was not the first instance that I had received such a request. I have been asked multiple times before, the very same question. How to become a corporate trainer?
So I thought, I will put this to rest for the benefit of all, through this post.
As a Life Coach, I have a simple technique to get answers for any How. I try to answer the 5 W’s– WHY, WHAT, WHO, WHERE, and WHEN and I effortlessly arrive at the HOW.
WHY
The first question that comes up to my mind is “Why do you want to become a Corporate Trainer?”
Let’s try to answer this question first.
Out of all the reasons people might have, these are the few reasons I would like to list out for you.
I am looking for a career change from my existing job role.I am passionate about training people.I experience joyfulness when I affect people’s life for good.It is a high paying career. I am a good orator.I love talking and sharing about experiences with different people.I get the kick of my life when I am preaching people.I want a relaxed job role that allows me to think and learn as an individual.I know of many people who are doing great as a corporate trainer who were previously in the same job as I am today. You may have one or a few of the many reasons I have listed above.
Don’t
But let me tell you the reality, it is not an extremely high-paying career in the beginning. You might have to struggle a lot. It is neither a relaxed job role as people usually perceive it. It takes a lot to stand before people for 7-8 hours a day for at least 15 days in a month and train people. Also, don’t try to become one, just because someone else you know is doing great in this.
Do
Yes, if you are passionate about helping people, affecting their life for a positive change, or transforming their life through your subject matter expertise, experiences or stories, this job is for you.
WHAT
What do you need to have in you as a person to take up this job? This is the next question that I would like to answer for you.
As a person you should be comfortable standing before people and talk. Mind it, it is not as simple as it seems. What I mean is that you should have good to great public speaking skills. You need to possess expert level knowledge on the subject you want to train people on or gain that expertise before getting on this role. So knowledge is extremely critical here. Then comes another extremely important part, which is grooming as a trainer. There is a specific standard of grooming that you need to adhere by. What I am talking about here is, how you carry yourself before people in terms of your clothing and appearance. Not just the public speaking skills, but also how to present your subject matter expertise before the audience makes up the next skill. Here, what I am referring to, is the presentation skills. It is always good to have a hands on experience on what you are going to train people on. Like if you are going to train people on SALES SKILLS, it is always advisable to have had experience in selling. Atleast 5-10 years of experience.WHO
The next question that I am going to answer for you is, How to get trained to train others? Who can help you learn training or facilitation skills?
Is there any institute, body, or authority that trains and provides accreditation to become a corporate trainer?
To help you out on that, let me ask you to search the same and check out in the country you live in.
To those who are in India, let me tell you, although it is actually better if you get trained and accredited to train others, it is not something that is a must to find an opportunity as a corporate trainer.
So all those who are working as corporate trainers in India are not necessarily accredited but are trainers and are very much working in corporate companies. All such trainers have first gained hands-on field experience in their domain and are operating more like subject matter experts. Many don’t have training or facilitation skills.
But these days corporate companies prefer trainers who have been trained to be trainers by some recognized training organization, institute, or body.
Let me list out MY RECOMMENDATIONS of some of the great institutes who can help you with this.
For honing your skills on Public Speaking I would recommend, PUBLIC SPEAKING INSTITUTE.For grooming and image development, I would recommend, IMAGE CONSULTING INSTITUTE For Presentation skills / Delivery / Facilitation Skills, I would recommend MIDDLE EARTH HR For Content Designing skills, I would recommend INDIAN SOCIETY FOR TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENTWHEN
Once you have the qualities, skills and have been accredited, the next important question that needs to be answered is when.
Although you can join as a subject matter expert type corporate trainer with the relevant years of experience. But, if I have to answer your question as to when – what is the best time to take up the job of a corporate trainer, I would say after 3-6 months of going through a rigorous TRAIN THE TRAINER program.
I am a Master Trainer & Facilitator and I coach trainers.
Now comes the most interesting question. One that might interest you the most. This is a bonus.
How to find a relevant corporate trainer’s job?
To make your life easier, let me first tell you, that you can take one out of the two routes I am going to share with you. Either apply and work full-time as an employee for an organization or provide freelancing training to corporate companies through your self-designed programs.
My Story of becoming a Corporate Trainer
How I started off as a corporate trainer after leaving a high-paying sales job?
In all my previous sales job assignments, as a Sales Manager, I had always been training and motivating my teams to perform. Trust me, even in those days, more than the Sales numbers I used to achieve, I was driven by my passion to train, mentor, and coach people in my team. That was when I was slowly making the mental transition, before I actually made into the field of training, learning, and development.
I honed my skills while being on all such sales assignments in the corporates before making a career change.
The time when I started, in the year 2010, no organization gave me an opportunity, to become a corporate trainer on a full-time basis as an employee. But I had made up my mind, I had the clarity, I am going to do this and only this. I had found the purpose of my life.
I began taking small assignments with different training companies and started providing training sessions to corporates through them.
After having designed my own programs, and delivered for a dozen of the corporate companies for more than three years, I again started applying to corporates for a full-time job.
That was when I got a breakthrough.
You may have to tread on a different path. Your journey to becoming a corporate trainer might turn out to be different. But I think this is what you can do if you have this question hovering in your mind, “How to become a corporate trainer?”

How to become a Motivational Speaker?
This dates back to the year 2010 when after my first failed attempt at starting a business of my own, I was feeling defeated and demotivated.
I had resorted back to my first love, an accomplice that has always been by my side, my books. It was during that period of self-introspection I happen to watch a video, a video in which a limbless man was motivating people. Mind it there were thousands of people in the audience.
He was Nick Vujicic. The man, the reason behind my journey to become a Motivational Speaker and Life Coach. I know he doesn’t know this.
I questioned myself if this man with no limbs, a man who is crippled can do it, I too can do it. Pardon me for being so rude. I love this man, respect him and follow him for what he has done. Not just for himself but for the thousands of people around.
So what if I failed in my first attempt, I will try again. It was because of those words that were echoing inside my head,
“If I fail, I try again, and again, and again”.
The words by the man himself. By Nick Vujicic.
That’s how I got motivated to try again.
After years of practice, I felt and strongly so, I too want to affect and help people transform their lives. What better than becoming a Motivational Speaker, like Nick.
In a country like India, where there are millions of people looking for motivation to do good in life, I wanted to make a difference. By contributing to their lives.
That was when Sandeep Maheshwari, a man who from being the CEO of the company he founded called imagesbazaar.com, began taking motivational sessions. That too with a promise that he would do this all for free, all his life. He continues to do so. He has 21 million subscribers today on YouTube. He too claims is a motivational speaker.
How can you become a motivational speaker?
That’s what the question is.
Walk your own path. I would say. I am walking my path to my goal. Don’t blindly follow what others are doing.
Question yourself – Why do you think you can become a motivational speaker?
It could be because you think you are a good public speaker, but that isn’t enough. You might think Sandeep Maheswari, Vivek Bindra and the likes like them are making millions out of this. Don’t get into this for that. You have a subject matter expertise on something, and you want to help others through that. Yes you can and should. You think you have great stories to tell which you have experienced in your life. The stories that can motivate people to do better in life, take better decisions, and become better human beings. Yes you should. You have a story of your own which you made out of a failure. A story that may inspire and motivate others to create their own inspiring stories. Yes you should very much do.What can make you a good motivational speaker?
Let me answer this for you.
Your genuiness in doning the hat of a motivational speaker because it is not a position or a profession. It is your service for the mankind.Your intent should be to help people transform their lives for their own better and for the others around them.Your passion to tread on this path, because it is not something that can stop when you reach a level. It is a life long journey, a life long assignment.Your self-lessness is what will make people connect and stay with you and your insights. Finally, I know, you have been waiting all this while for the answer to this one question, “How to become a Motivational Speaker?”
Do I need to answer this now?
Let me do it. Don’t worry. I am not going to write, wait for my next blog. Let me reveal it for you, right away.
There is no defined path to becoming a Motivational Speaker. Actually, there is no organization or body that can certify or provide accreditation to become a motivational speaker. I know there are many that can help you become a good public speaker.
So how will you become one?
First identify your reason of becoming a motivational speaker, which could be any of the five answers to the WHY I listed above. Then check if you have most of the four attributes – the four answers to the WHAT’s I mentioned above. After that look for opportunities to speak on topics of your intererests, subject expertise you have, stories you have to tell or your own story on various platforms.Continue to speak on the forums of your relevant domain, and build a reputation of being a speaker who can motivate.Create a YouTube Channel or an online Video Channel to reach out to larger audiences, those who you cannot reach out to physically.and then
Enjoy the journey!
I know I have not written a word about how to make money as a Motivational Speaker. If that’s the reason you were here, I know I must have disappointed you.
Don’t worry, I would not need to advise you on that, once you become a renowned motivational speaker. Focus on becoming a good one first.
If this read was worth your time, please don’t forget to put a comment below.
The next blog post I am going to come up with is going to be “How to become a Corporate Trainer?” So watch out.

Why are Motivational Speakers important?
I am sure you must have read about or watched one of the many motivational speakers who are around these days. I happen to be one of them. But have you really felt that they can do some magic and change your life completely? None of them can. Nor am I saying I can. Then why are motivational speakers important in our life?
According to research, Motivational Speakers are going to be the next big thing in India. Not because it pays you hugely but because the demotivated, depressed, defeated, population in this country is growing exponentially. Life is extremely stressful and it is for most of us. People need a dose of motivation every day.
Although I had a different reason to devote my life to becoming a motivational speaker and a life coach. That’s a different story altogether.
As we all know necessity is the mother of all inventions. Similar was the reason. I trod on this journey to discover myself. To know the greater truths of life. More to learn than to teach or coach.
But then one of my coaches made me think. How will you evolve?
I didn’t have an answer to that question.
He told me,
“The best way to learn about life is to help others learn about life. In the process, you will learn about many lives through their problems.”
Having said that I continue to be a learner for life.
Coming back to the very reason you are here.
Why are motivational speakers important?Let me list out a few of the many ways they can be helpful to you.
You operate out of your own limited mindsets- When I say limited, I don’t mean you are any lesser. What I mean to express here is, that every individual thinks out of his own ways of looking at problems, situations and life in general. Motivational Speaker is a person who can give you a different point of view. The point of view which he pulls out of his archive of motivating people in life.Motivational Speaker has his own story to talk about. One that he made out of probably nothing, or from a distressed situation in life. Not just his own story he has unlimited number of other such experiences which he has lived in his journey.Motivational Speakers are at times subject matter experts in one field and on other they are those who motivate people to focus on achieving a successful life by teaching them professional and interpersonal skills. They in a way help people transform themselves and become what they wish to, by emotionally moving them through their talks, anecdotes and real-life examples. You have a teacher to look forward to in school, college, university but the moment you are on your own in life, a vaccum is created. You miss someone who can motivate you or guide you. That’s what motivatonal speakers do.We have different types of motivational speakers.
One who are subject matter experts like Sales and Marketing professionals, or maybe Customer Service experts.
Then there are some who are Industry leaders who want to hang their corporate hats early and want to don the hat of a leadership expert or a motivational speaker on leadership and team building.
Then we have public speakers who want to motivate people to perform in the MLM industry, who can also be referred to as motivational speakers.
Finally, we have those who motivate people in life and business through their real-life experiences, coaching, and spiritual experiences. Something I am and aspire to become better every day.
To become a motivational speaker, read my next post on “How to become a Motivational Speaker?”

My Rendezvous with a Six-Year-Old
This is about my rendezvous with a six-year-old child.
A few days back, a mother and a small child walked up to me, and the mother said, “We have heard, you are also a life coach, Ajit Panicker”
I said, “Yes, I am, for all those who seek me as one.”
The mother said, “My child has a question for you. Something that is troubling her.”
“I see. So my child, what is it that you wish to know. Please ask” I said.
The child was hesitant and trying to hide behind her mother. That’s so much like a six-year-old. Isn’t it?
“So should I tell him what you want to know?” the mother asked her daughter.
“No, I will tell him” she mumbled.
“Great then. Tell me your name first” I said.
She said “Mini”
“Wow Mini, you have such a wonderful name. It’s so cute” I complimented her.
“Uncle. I don’t feel confident. Have not won any FIRST prizes so far. I always feel others are doing better than me. They would do better than me. I don’t feel like trying too hard or too much. Isn’t it fine even if we don’t win? What’s there in winning or losing? It doesn’t matter. What matters is that we try.” she said, all in one breath, as if she was holding it all.
I was zapped. How could anyone in this world expect a six-year-old to possess this kind of wisdom?
This small child has a mind to think, question, clarify, look for answers, in all probability to improve. She had made my day.
I said, “Beta, you are so wise. I am highly impressed. But tell me one thing, why do you think you can’t do better if others are doing good. Practically you can’t compete alone. But yes one thing you can do is to let others do what they are doing. You simply focus on the best you can put up”
She said, “How will I not think about them? They are all around me. I notice them. How can I avoid seeing them?”
“Yes, you will notice them. But they or their performance should not affect you. You have to practice this. If it is a dance or say singing or maybe drawing, you should compare yourself with what YOU did last time. What were the mistakes YOU made? How to improve upon them? And not how good others are.” like a boastful Life Coach I tried.
“How do I do it? When my sister rides faster than me, I feel defeated. Likewise, when my friend runs faster than me, I feel down. When my classmates give answers faster than me, I feel sad. I am not able to accept this.”
Now, I was feeling like, I am repeating what Lord Krishna did for Arjuna.
What I was most amazed by was the kind of self-talk she had been doing all this while. Probably a lot of credit goes to her parenting. The parents had probably helped the child just be herself, talk, think, question, and not get into the race trap. I am saying this because not once did the child say that my mother or father ask to do this or that.
My love, when you are part of a group which is competing, it is natural that someone would come first and someone would come last. But the question is what should matter more to you? The final result or the process you went through. What I mean is the process of preparation, correcting yourself, improving yourself with every practice, accepting feedback, and working on them before the performance. That is what makes you do what you put up as a performance. If you will think, you will put all your focus on winning the first or second, or third prizes, without going through the real grind, the process, you will never win. But if you focus all your energy on preparation and go and simply put up your best performance, there are huge chances.
This answer was much more simplified when I explained it to that six-year-old. But guys isn’t it true.
What a rendezvous!
Takeaways – Let your children be themselves. Let them talk, express, question, reason out, do self-talk, provide an environment where they can speak out, help them as coaches. Parents can actually be the best coaches for their children.

My Top 10 Lessons of 2021
2. Work on your dream goal – Although I have been working day in and day out but I learned from the various success stories that I witnessed in 2021. One thing that I learned was that I will have to persistently work on my dream goal without taking a break if I want to make it true well on time.
3. Learn, Update and Upskill yourself – In 2021 I have invested a good amount of time and money in upskilling myself in the field of Learning & Development. I feel it was a good decision because those who upgrade themselves stand a better chance in this competitive world.
4. Work hard on your Health – There is no greater wealth than your own health. I have tried to keep up to this promise in 2021. Although not as regular as I was in the previous years but I still maintained a regular walk or a jog.
5. Help others wherever possible – The world is too small and life is too short. I learned, that it is always good to help others around us whenever they need us. Especially in these testing times, we need each other more than any other time before.
6. Read and Travel – One of my top 10 lessons was that I should continue to spend a good amount of time on reading and traveling. Although I traveled and had three vacations this year with family, I read much lesser than the previous years.
7. Spent time teaching kids – One biggest love I found this year was teaching my own kids on a regular basis. I have been teaching and training children and adults all my life now. Trust me but the biggest pleasure I enjoyed was this year when I started spending more time with my kids and their daily studies.
8. Spoke less and listened more – I have been trying to do this all these years. But you know how difficult it is, especially when you are a trainer. But to transform myself into a life coach I had to develop this important skill. The skill of reflective listening. One of my biggest accomplishments this year was, to speak less and listen much more reflectively.
9. Learned to say “No” more effectively – Again a habit which I had been suffering from quite some time was to say “Yes” to most of the people around. And most of the time. This year I have become a little better at saying “No” more effectively. How can anyone achieve anything great in life without learning this extremely important skill?
10. It’s fine to displease people at times – Most of us try to please most of the people around us. So that they don’t feel annoyed or become displeased. It is absolutely fine to displease people at times. You can’t be an “Always Nice Person” people expect you to be. If you are one, you are faking. This too happens to be one of the top 10 lessons in 2021.
Wishing you all a wonderful NEW YEAR 2022 !! Make the most of it!

My Top 10 Lessons of 2020
What a depressing year this has been? Most of us are still under restrictions, under partial lockdown, even today. I wish we never see a year like this. The entire nation and the globe underwent a strange metamorphosis. To this date, the world is still trying to come out with a vaccine that could save it from any further damage.
While it has been extremely challenging to come to terms with the dreadful COVID-19, there is still a flip side that is bright enough to take our lessons from. I am sure you too must have learned a lot in this year like me.
So, keeping the trend on, I am posting my top 10 lessons of the year.
One of the biggest lessons this year was that the time spent with the loved ones is never too much. For the three months India was put under the complete shutdown, I am sure millions of people all over must have understood the value of family bond, love and staying together. Locked with my family members in my own home helped me realize how we can stay together for months together. And that it is actually fun to be with them than any kind of botheration. We played games, we sang, we danced, we ate and we drank together for days, and weeks and months.
I realized that we can stay happy with less and that we need not have everything extra-large.
That we should take care of ourselves like no else’s business because it is not. This year when we were fighting against the COVID-19 each one of us were on our own to keep the required hygienic. Could we depend on others? No. That’s how it should be all the time.
That there are more stupid people than wise around you. And the only way to keep yourself unaffected from such stupid people is to stay distance from them.
I realized that it is not important to be productive always, all the time. It is absolutely fine to take some time off and lazy around.
Thanking people in general around you bring so much of peace within you. If you still have not, thank all the warriors who fought for you when you were locked or quarantined within the walls of your house. I paid gratitude every day and trust you me it kept me going strong.
This one for sure was one of the top lessons this year. Immunity if good is going to keep you healthy and strong against any COVID type of infections. Taking ayurvedic help or whatever home remedies that helps should be taken to keep your immunity boosted all the time.
That online and remote ways of working through internet can be made as effective as going to office every day. Two important virtues that are must are trust and accountability.
That being self-dependent is fine but being socially self-sufficient is not possible. You have to manage to keep yourself socially active, even if it asks you to make a call to your friends every week.
Come what may the goals of your life should not take a backseat, so what if it was a Corona year. New ways of ensuring your dreams come true can be devised. The persistence to reach out and turn them real is the key.
Wishing you all a happier and healthier New Year 2021!

Yes, you read it right, a mystery novella. And it should be up and live very soon on Amazon. If all goes according to the plan, within two months.
This one is very close to my heart. The most exciting part of this work is the premise, visualization, and mysticism, my most savored subject.
I’ll give you a peek into the story…
Sivan, a social reject and a loner, was struggling to survive and manage even the basics of life. But then all of a sudden one day he turned into a charismatic and confident boy.
And it all happened after that day.
The day when he fell upon a strange-looking object outside the temple he offered his customary prayers every day. There was no looking behind after that day.
Was it happening because of some spell or something else?
No one was able to find out the reason for his sweeping transformation until he married.
Things changed and the mystic he had turned himself into started getting questioned. By none other than but his wife.
Did he survive her accusations and come out untainted? What happens?
Read the book to know more..
Do you want to be among the first ones to read? You can read it, the day it gets published. How…I’ll tell you how…

Why you should be a rebel in life?
I am sure your curiosity has brought you here. You want to know, why and how being a rebel in life can help a person.
Most of us, all through our life, try to gain acceptance, appreciation and acknowledgment for our presence in the groups, around us. We learn that we can be part of any such group or society only if we conform to the rules and guidelines of the group. We realize the repercussions or learn by suffering for not conforming to the regulations of the group.
In the process gradually, we start following so that we can improve our acceptance in the group and be part of the society.
But we don’t realize that we start killing the creativity inside us. How?
Creativity triggers only when you don’t accept the things as it is. It needs some kind of trouble, something you don’t conform to.
But we grow up to follow rules, in the environment where saying ‘no’ when everyone else agrees, is considered contrarian.
But the matter of fact is that the troublemakers are rare and brave. And you would be shocked to know that there is a rebel in each one of us, which we tend to showcase in different proportions.
To make things clear, let me tell you, I am not writing this post to create a troublemaker out of you. The objective of this post is simple, not to be part of the herd group mentality and challenge with a contrarian view.
“I am not a rebel without a cause”, is the kind of troublemaker I am referring to here.
Since childhood, our elders teach us to adhere to the right way of doing things. We say to our children,
“You are a good boy or a good girl, only if you behave in a particular manner.”
We don’t let them bloom with their own way of accepting or challenging a thought put before them.
Most of the kids give up and so as to become good, start adhering by the right set of behavior. They start following the norm, without challenging them.
At school, teachers teach us to choose certainty over doubt. And then all through our life, we fear taking risks. It is because we become apprehensive about the repercussions of failing.
Then the organizations we work we are made to adhere to the company-specific ways of doing things, without questioning them.
It almost kills our creativity.
I can forthrightly share my own story of being a rebel.
It was my tenth standard and the summer vacations had started. I read somewhere in one of the magazines, how teenagers in U.S work during their vacations. And earn their pocket money, irrespective of what class of society they belong to, affluent or not affluent.
Being brought up in a small, orthodox Malayali family in a small town of U.P in India in the late nineties, who would have thought of taking up and actually getting through a job interview at a tender age of 15?
My parents objected and said,
“You are too small to take up a job, even if it is for summer vacations only. No one does that.”
And I was like,
“So what if no one does that. I want to and I would do it.”
Although it took, a full one month to convince them, I did and went against their wishes. I gave the interview and got through the job. It was my first job, the job of being a salesman. I was just 15 and not sure if the child labor laws those days were that stringent or not. I earned, I learned and I churned the status quo group thinking.
Second Story
It is about those days, some nine years back when I had worked for almost seven years at various companies, changing jobs quite often. Learning, earning and training people along, but that killing passion was missing.
I sold holiday packages, cars, loans, insurance and investment products, but never felt thrilled at doing it. My vision of my life was different. I wanted to become a change agent, someone who could affect millions of lives.
I explored the options around, introspected on the strengths that make me passionate. And realized I can positively affect the lives of hundreds and thousands of people by skilling them.
A lot of people except my wife objected but I began taking up small training assignments that came my way. I became a trainer, by contrarily going against the routine jobs, something that matched my qualifications till then.
Today I am a corporate trainer, a motivational speaker, an author, and a Life coach. My bio may sound a lot, but they are all aligned to my goal. The goal of affecting people’s lives through my sessions and my writing.
Third Story
I still remember that day. One of the recruiters, a PSU bank had come for the campus interviews at our campus. It was an MBA course. I was already selected, almost a week back.
This PSU bank that I am talking about was presenting about the bank’s future plans and the expectation they have from those who would join the bank. At the end of the presentation, they announced they would consider only the MBA batch and not the MBA (EB) batch.
To which one of the girls sitting there questioned,
“Sir with due respect, please tell us, why can we not be considered? We are rather more suitable for the role of a banker, having knowledge of not just the accounting and financial management part but also the technology part. We have specialized in e-business with subjects like ERP, networking, database management and e-commerce. The specialization gives us an edge for the roles of bankers. As you know once we get on the job we would be required to work on the various banking software.”
You would be surprised that this girl not only paved her way into the interview but helped her entire batch avail a chance to appear for the interview.
Over the years, I have not only seen her grow professionally but also personally. The bank offered her a job and she continues to work even today.
She later became my wife.
Just imagine what it requires for the both of us when we are married and continue to rebel in our spheres. I would not go further in detail, about how our marital life is. It is pretty normal, like every other mature and strong marriage which fights.
I, therefore, want to put before you today what being a rebel can bring to you.
Why you should be a rebel in your life?
Innovation cannot happen with conformity, it is always when there is curiosity. And curiosity is the spark behind any great idea. Curiosity begins only when there is non-conformity to a situation or an event. So if you are a rebel, innovation can come naturally to you.Disagreement cancels the effect of groupthink. Those who rebel, often called troublemakers challenge the status quo and liberate a lot of people around from their average life.Dissent provides clarity; we tend to make better decisions.Speaking out our mind, even if that means being impolite, helps transfer our belief systems to the people around. As a rebel, you can turn into a change agent, an agent who is not crazy but one who disrupts things and situations with the sole purpose of improving them. If people like Apple’s Steve Jobs & Creator Walt Disney were not a rebel, the world would not have witnessed such geniuses. Geniuses who changed the way we lived our life.Rebel, as the word generally means are not problem creators; they break the routine and fight against common group thinking. They think differently. You too can change yours by being a rebel.By simply acting against the norms will bring a big boost to your self-esteem. Being a rebel helps you become more confident, you tend to speak up wherever required and show what you are.As a rebel, you don’t work within limits. And when you are not limited or restricted, your performance improves and you collaborate better. When you rebel with a purpose to improve the stale existence, you gain reputation- people start respecting your authenticity and position. You tend to become immune and resourceful against any kind of criticism. As a rebel you not only learn how to speak up, you even inspire others to speak up.When you turn rebel, you start racking your brains because you become responsible for solving the existing problem or task at hand. Your problem-solving skill improves. As you turn rebel, you can explore your strengths and talents and hence show your real side which could be of a more value-adding kind. When you rebel, you will not fear to take risks and would accept mistakes as lessons in disguise.Non-adherence makes us think beyond the walls. Ideation and finding solutions become easy.
I hope this blog post turns useful in making you think like a rebel with a cause.
