Reviews:

1.    “Surprising, suspenseful, and utterly superb read….Any attempt to describe the book in a single statement is difficult, but the book mixes uncommon palettes and manages a masterpiece with it.” Self-Publishing Review.

2.    [The SHIVA Syndrome is] very highly recommended, indeed; especially for thriller and sci-fi readers who have become deluged with too much predictability and who seek cutting-edge action, believable protagonists, and action that is solidly intense throughout. Midwest Book Review

3.    “…a unique mixture of paranormal, science fiction, thriller and mystery. The story was amazingly developed to keep the reader attentive and on their toes constantly and always guessing where the plot is heading up until the very end.” LittlePinkCrayon

4.    “THE SHIVA SYNDROME rewards the reader with a return to intelligent speculative fiction writing in the vein of Crichton, Rollins and Cussler.” darkmediaonline.com

5.    “Bottom line: “The Shiva Syndrome” is a very intense and detail rich novel – a book I could easily see being made into a film (Christopher Walken as Grimes?). I do recommend this book to sci-fi fans, and readers who love a well-written book packed full with action.” Around the World in Books

Alan Joshua

As a native Philadelphian, Alan Joshua (pen name) has the appropriate fondness for soft pretzels and cheesesteaks. He is married, has two grown children, and lives in the suburbs. He is currently a practicing Clinical Psychologist with a background in Forensic Psychology.

His diverse background includes working in a State penitentiary and mental institution, a sleep laboratory, and a pain management center.

Joshua has published many nonfiction journal articles. The Shiva syndrome, his debut fiction novel, is a science fiction/paranormal mystery and thriller.

Always curious about the unknowns of human experience, he is fascinated with creativity and paranormal abilities. This led to his involvement with Psychology and research into Parapsychology.

He has explored paranormal abilities using hypnosis and in-depth interviewing of a wide range of practitioners. Among his prized possessions are a shriveled, mummified banana (a product of one healer’s biopsychokinesis) and a small, curled Austrian teaspoon produced by a German healer while six people sat around him. (see http://alanjoshua.com/biopsychokinesis )

The Shiva Syndrome incorporates his knowledge of Parapsychology and experiences with healers, intuitives, “psychic” sensitives, etc.

Unsurprisingly, he is a science fiction fan and has been influenced by such writers as Asimov, Bradbury, Crichton, Heinlein, Serling, and the extraordinary genius of Phillip Dick.

As an avid Star Trek fan, he is fond of contradicting Gene Roddenberry, believing that human consciousness and its potentials are “the final frontier.”

If you have questions for me, I would be glad to answer them–time permitting. I’d like to hear from you if you’ve had any paranormal experiences.

INTERVIEW:

Thanks Alan for being here today. Tell our readers what inspires you to get out of bed each day?

The infinite possibilities each day holds. Will inspiration strike? Will the book go viral? Will Spielberg or Ridley Scott call? Just kidding of course.

If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?

Tough question. Mahatma Ghandi, among many, many others. He was a courageous and non-violent man of transcendent wisdom—and he had a sense of humor.

What’s the story behind your latest book?

It was inspired by real research I did into paranormal healing. In the story, science opens the door for humans to reach God-like powers of creation and destruction. A secret Russian mind research laboratory erupts, annihilating thousands and leaving a monstrous, one-mile deep crater in its wake.

Beau Walker, a psychologist and reluctant empath, is coerced into joining a research project, code-named SHIVA, to investigate the catastrophe. An ordinary scientific investigation leads Walker and the research team into alternate realities. To my delight, Dr. Stanley Krippner, a leading parapsychologist, endorsed it.

Tell us your writing process:

For the most part, it’s driven by inspiration coming from who knows where? Honestly, much of the story was directed by the characters who led me, sometimes grudgingly, in a certain direction. At least that’s through much of the first draft. Amazingly, in rewriting I found depths and surprises that were jaw-dropping. As a psychologist, familiar elements began to gel in ways I’d never considered before. Now, I was conceptualizing them through the minds of characters.

What promotional efforts has worked for you that you can share with other authors?

I find it very awkward giving advice. I wrote a page on my website at http://alanjoshua.com about creativity and the writing process. Forced to give at least one suggestion, it would be to ready yourself for writing blocks. Have more than one project going and “change horses” when you hit a persistent block. Sometime the conscious mind becomes, say, log-jammed. Putting the one project on the backburner can free up the subconscious. Trust it to continue working for you.

When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?

Of all places, in a mental institution. I desperately needed another reality beyond the confines of my limitations as a social worker. Drawing or writing my imaginations became a bona fide need. I produced, “Father of the Sun,” an unpublished book on cloning (before it became well known) while there.

Tell us about your main character:

Beau Walker is a complex man. With an African-American mother and Mohawk father, his upbringing was, at the least, complicated. But he also has innate paranormal abilities—including healing and empathic unions with people–that made his early life even more difficult. I’d rather not give away any more. Beau really should be discovered in the pages of The SHIVA Syndrome. A one blogger put it, “whatever you’re thinking, think again.”

One important aspect of Walker is that he’s set into as real a world as possible according to parapsychological research and physics theory. I guess that’s why one Amazon reader said, “None of This Is Real! Really! I Hope!” His acceptance of the possible reality was a pleasure.

What are you working on next?

I’ve toyed with two or three. One reader pleaded for a sequel and prequel, so they’re viable ideas. Another is a paranormal murder mystery.

Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?

The one spoken of the most by mentors in education is intuition. I consider that an extension of imagination. It’s almost a feel that something is probable. Admittedly, my logical mind does battle with it. When it’s tied in with a strong gut reaction, that overrides logic.

Who are your favorite authors?

Oh, there are so many. Asimov, Bradbury, Crichton, Clarke, Heinlein, to name a few. Shakespeare, however, has it all. In his collected works, he covers virtually every type of human experience in the most delicious phrasings, including the paranormal: Macbeth, Hamlet. If he were writing sci-fi today, no doubt her would reign.

What do you like to do with your free time?

Watch film after film, except for occasional TV gems, like Hannibal. Give me vacation time and I love cruising and snorkeling.

Tell us about your plans for upcoming books.

I’ve already mentioned possible ideas in development. It’s too soon to say any more.

Where can people find you on the web?

My website is http://alanjoshua.com ; Alan Joshua on Facebook. Twitter is @alan_joshua414.

Any final thoughts?

Only the hope that other readers will enter the world of The SHIVA Syndrome. I believe the reviews on Amazon and Goodreads speak for themselves. While the novel is considered by some to be science fiction, other call it a mystery or thriller. What is most important is that readers realize that there is a world of real paranormal abilities that has been researched since the 1920s. It’s far more exciting and rich with possibilities than anyone could realize. That’s what I tried to bring to the table.

Interview with Michelle Beber, author of Angels, Angels, Everywhere

Angels Angels Everywhere banner

Hi foks. Today we are chatting with Michelle Beber. Michelle is certified Angel Intuitive, Spiritual Teacher and Archangel Life Coach.

Her life changed when she attended a spiritual retreat in 2008. There, she learned about repetitive number sequences known as “angel numbers.” Having always been fascinated by things “beyond this world,” she started researching everything she could about “angel numbers,” which, of course, led her to discoveries about angels themselves.

Michelle Beber

Michelle, thanks for being here today. Please tell our readers about you

I’m not your traditional children’s picture book author. I’m an “angel intuitive” which means I’m able to “connect” with the angelic realm. Some of the beautiful messages I’ve received from the angels have turned into manuscripts for children’s books. I’m also what’s known as a “lightworker” who’s working with Archangel Michael to bring God’s healing love and light to the world, especially to children.

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?

That’s a tough one because I hate to get out of bed. Ha, ha! I guess the fact that I know I have tons of things to do and very little time to do them.

If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?

If we could bring the person back from the dead, it would be “Dr. Seuss.” He was a genius, and I’d love to have the opportunity to get inside his head. If you’re talking about someone who’s still alive, I’d like to meet with Louise Hay, the founder of Hay House Publishing, to ask her about her early days as a fledgling author.

What’s the story behind your latest book?

The idea for Angels, Angels, Everywhere came to me in the last place I thought anything creative would ever happen … while I was sitting in my car! Ha, ha! I was stuck in horrible traffic on my way to work one morning when these beautiful words came into my head: “Angels, angels, everywhere … some are here, and some are there … all they want to do is share … share their love with you.” As my car inched along, more words started to come to me quickly, all in rhythm and rhyme. Luckily, I keep a notepad in the car, so I wrote everything down as I heard it. These words became the text for the book. I was also given a vision of four female angels of different races flying around the Earth. That vision became my cover.

Angels Angels Everywhere 2

Tell us your writing process

Believe it or not, most of my ideas have come to me when I’ve been sitting in my car in traffic. It’s a great way to pass the time on my long commute to and from work, and I guess the angels feel that I’m a captive audience. If words come to me, I write them down on a scratch pad and type them later.

The other place that seems to invite inspiration is when I sit outside with nature surrounding me. It’s me, my dog, and a pen and paper.

When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?

I remember loving to write as a child and writing poetry when I was a teen, but the realization that I seriously wanted to publish a book was when I finished my first children’s picture book manuscript in 2010. I’ve written many other manuscripts since then, but when the angels gave me the beautiful words and visions for Angels, Angels, Everywhere, I just knew it was the one that was supposed to be my debut book.

Tell us about your main character

Since my book is interactive, I would have to say that the reader is the main character. The reader is going to learn how to deal with emotions like fear, anger, sadness, and loneliness by asking the angels for help. Also, the reader is going to learn that angels share in their joy when they are proud, happy, and having fun. Finally, the reader is going to learn that he or she is unconditionally loved at all times.

What are you working on next?

I recently released the promotional video for my book on YouTube, I’m continuing to write my blog, and I’m having a great time on this fantastic book tour throughout the summer.

Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?

Isn’t communicating with the angels enough? Ha, ha!

Who are your favorite authors?

Metaphysical authors, Doreen Virtue and Louise Hay

What do you like to do with your free time?

What free time? Ha, ha! Most of my free time is spent working on marketing and promotion, but I do take time to read and post inspirational and motivational messages on social media. I used to think it was a complete waste of time, but now I love it! I’ve met many wonderful, like-minded people on the internet and have learned more about metaphysics.

Tell us about your plans for upcoming books.

I’m planning to produce two more books of “angelic poetry” this year. Also, I have manuscripts done for stories that will help boost children’s self-esteem, teach them about values and character, and some that are “just for fun!”

Where can people find you on the web?

My website is www.michellebeber.com, and my blog is www.heartofalightworker.com. I have social media accounts on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Goodreads and Pinterest. There are links to all my accounts on my website.

Any final thoughts?

Don’t forget to ask the angels for help!

EXCERPT

“His name is James Lacie. Once he was one of the top alchemists in Cassadia. He was highly sought after for his many time-saving inventions and numerous elixirs. At any given time his shop carried wart remover, air fresheners, love potions, and something closer to that which you seek.”

Miss Mia turned back to her mirror and dabbed at her rosy cheeks again, humming to herself. Milo reached to his belt and produced a small leather bag. Opening the pouch he emptied it into the palm of his left hand. A pair of opal earrings spilled forth. “Closer to that which I seek, you say?” he inquired.

“Yes, a chemical fruit that when eaten would unknowingly render the eater susceptible to suggestion. A great party favourite a few years back. The unsuspecting victim would eat the fruit and was then told to cluck like a chicken or act like a coconut. Its effects would sometimes last the duration of a good party.”

“Yes, the gag would be much funnier if the victim was unsuspecting,” mused Milo. “Tell me, where can I find this James Lacie’s shop?”

“He no longer has one,” replied Mia. “It had something to do with a potion mix up. The king’s cousin ended up falling in love with a sheep, as I recall. The royal family was not impressed, and you know how the Chronicle can be when it gets its hands on what it deems to be a front page story. Ruined the man’s career, or so I’m told. Anyway Mr. Lacie has been on the lam ever since.”

INTERVIEW

Tell our readers about you

I’m 39. I live In Ontario Canada, in a small town called Lively. I’ve written 6 novels over the years- You can check out my webpage at www.grantreed.ca for info on all of the books. Gary and I are twins. I am Married and have two teenagers living at home. *sigh*

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?

My wife’s foot on my butt. Somebody has to bring home the bacon…okay she works more than me, but I need time to be creative too!

If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?

Oh boy, the choices! Hmmm this is a tough one. Since I am re-watching all of the Game of Thrones episodes now, and because I also write Fantasy, I think a day with George R. R. Martin is in order! I imagine he’d have some great advice to give.

What’s the story behind your latest book?

Funny Fruit isn’t our latest book, but since it is book 1 of the Vellian Heroes, and it is the book we are promoting on this tour, I’ll tell you about that one. Funny Fruit is a YA fantasy book about two teenage kids – Garrett and Azilda who are trained by two ancient brother’s Yarl and Fonn, to become the next protector’s of the realm.

It’s a humorous telling of the adventures these characters (and several more) undertake in order to save the King (and the realm) from the clutches of the king’s First General Ascentyai Asimo. If I had to classify it, I’d say it is a whimsical fantasy that is appropriate for the whole family!

Tell us your writing process

When I am writing, I like to get up around 6am, put on that first cup of coffee and then head down to my computer. I usually check the news sites first, in an effort to ease into another day of sitting at the PC. After I have had my fill of news and hockey articles, I re-open my work from yesterday and re-read/edit that work. Then I start writing for that day…

Do you have any advice on what has and has not worked for you that you can share with other authors?

All I can say is get your hands into everything and try all different avenues available. I don’t want to say what I think works and what I think doesn’t, because what works for me may not work for you and vice versa. Try different things and log all of your results. Also, sometimes the best ways to promote your book do not cost a lot of money. Get reviewed!!!

When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?

I knew from about the age of twelve that I wanted to tell stories for a living. I loved being taken away to a new magical place with deadly hazards around every corner.

Tell us about your main character:

Garrett is a twelve year old boy, who is being raised by his adoptive father Kirk Willigins in the small town of Fable. When the town is sacked and the villagers escorted to the Northern Mines to work as slaves, Garrett and his new pals must find a way to free his father. Together with the old Masters Fonn and Yarl and his new training partner Azilda, they set off to right the wrongs visited upon the villagers by the king’s First General.

What are you working on next?

I am putting ideas together for book 4 of the Vellian Mysteries books, and I am also tossing around some ideas for the sequel to Shadow of the Makarios.

Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?

I’m an exceptional trout fisherman!

Who are your favorite authors?

David A. Gemmell

George R. R. Martin

J. R. R Tolkien

Hicks /Weiss

What do you like to do with your free time?

I like to fish and hunt, play video games, and yell at my kids.

Thanks for being my guest here today :)

Excerpt

I am at a Halloween party – my first in years. I wear an early 19th-century style off-white summer dress, a matching hat and high-heeled suede shoes with buttons on the front. The party is inside of a house near Lincoln and Seventh streets in downtown Bloomington. It is so full of costumed IU students that it is terribly hot. Given my dress is meant for summer, I try to tolerate it, but can’t. I go looking for my friend to tell her I am going to leave. After several minutes of searching, I start to feel faint and leave without seeing her. As I head down the front stairs of the house, I hear one of the front doors open. I turn to see a young man in jeans and plaid shirts, not a costume, come out.

I turn back and continue down the stairs when suddenly I am bumped into and my feet lose traction on the stairs. My feet slide back and my body tips backward until my heels are completely off the step. I bend my legs at the knees as I attempt to twist to my right to grab the metal railing, instead my fingertips brush it. I feel a sharp pain in my ribs as they hit the edge of a step. Then the side of my head hits the concrete knocking me out. I do not come to for several moments. When I do, I feel my body sliding down the steps and every part of me being bumped all the way down. I keep blacking out and coming to all the while helpless to stop the fall. The whole thing feels like it is taking forever. I wish I could cry out to the man who caused the fall to stop this, but each hit on the steps keeps me from doing so. Finally it stops and the last thing I hear before I black out for a final time is the man apologizing profusely, and telling me not to worry, an ambulance is on the way.

A Crying Shame, The Uninvited and Them Book Tour

William Johnstone ACS, TU and Them Banner

AUTHOR BIO

William W. Johnstone was born in Southern Missouri, the youngest of four children. Raised with strong moral and family values by his minister father, and well-tutored by his school teacher mother, Bill quit school when he was fifteen. He was kicked out of the French Foreign Legion for being under age and joined the carnival. But still valuing his education, he returned home to finish his high school education in 1957.

He went on to work as a deputy sheriff, did a hitch in the army, and began a career in radio broadcasting, where he worked daily on his verbal and storytelling skills for the next sixteen years on the air. Much of his knowledge of the early frontier began from listening to family experiences told to him by his Grandparents.

His love of animals is displayed in many of his books as well as finding several Huskies and Malamutes roaming freely around his home. As an avid gun and knife collector, hours of research are devoted to the types of weapons commonly used during the eras of his writings.

One little known fact, is his love for music … from “rockabilly to classical”. Bill has written and recorded several songs which may be released for his fans in the future.

He started writing in 1970, but it wasn’t until late 1979 when The Devil’s Kiss was published that William W. Johnstone became a full-time writer. Since that time he has written over two hundred books in a variety of genres including action, suspense, western, science fiction, and horror. Two of his books, Eagle Down and Dagger, were written under the pen name of William Mason.

To the true William W. Johnstone reader, he is a best-selling author admired for the great diversity in his writing talents. Though most known for his western adventures, Johnstone was also a visionary writer. His prophetic stories within his Ashes Series, Code Name Series, and his science fiction books, predicting the Gulf War and the political climate we live in today, was ahead of its time when it was written.

Guest Author ~ Lee J. Mavin, author of The Students Sold Us Secrets

The Students Sold Us Secrets Volume One

by Lee J. Mavin

Genre: Horror

Seven 5 star ratings on Amazon.com

Blurb: No one is safe! The school has become a war-zone and the innocent are turning fast!

A brave and nameless teacher has collected some awful and disturbing documents from some ghastly students. These are their stories and they will shock and amaze both teacher and student. But they haven’t been given away for free. This terrified individual has paid a hefty price to get the truth and is paying for it, with his freedom.

In his report he states:

‘If you are considering a career in teaching I would advise against it completely. It has become a profession far more dangerous than a police officer or even an army soldier in open war.’

‘I’m risking my life giving you this information, but I feel you need to know the truth. On the surface these children appear innocent and well-mannered but it is inside where their darkness dwells.’

The Students Sold Us Secrets Volume 1 is the first collection of short stories from the writer that brought you Reverse the Universe, Lee J Mavin, and will take you down a path you never thought existed. It’s packed with twelve short stories, all equally alarming and unsettling, as well as a secret report written by an undercover teacher.

Amazon Review from Leeroy: The Students Sold Us Secrets Volume One by Lee J Mavin is the first of a series of chilling and disturbing tales. It is focused around the dark thoughts and aspirations of young teenagers living and going to school in Shanghai. It is to be noted that children in Shanghai are usually being raised by their grandparents (spoiled rotten) and never have brothers and sisters. Add to this, the constant pressure and focus from their teachers to perform at a high level and you have a bunch of overworked hot heads.

There are twelve short stories in this edition. Each are very different, yet that have some freaky similarities: The narrators are all very driven to get what they want. Some seek respect, overs revenge, but all stop at nothing to get what they want!

Go and check this book out now, published by ASJ Publishers is available both on kindle and paperback! Volume two of the madness is rumored to be out this year too!

The Students Sold Us Secrets Volume One is available in Print & E-Book from ASJ Publishing, Amazon, and various other online retailers.

EXCERPT

Etta hooted. “Art of lovemaking!” she said, slapping her leg. “Well that’s the funniest thing I ever heard. Ain’t no art going on here. Ain’t no love either. This is a business I’m keeping, and if you want a room in my brothel, you’ll damn site bring in the money to pay for it.”

Beth was angry. Angry. And when Beth was angry she’d say something she shouldn’t, or worse.

Anastasia put a restraining hand on Beth’s arm and Beth glared at her.

“We’ll make money,” said Anastasia. “We’ll make you plenty of money, but we’re tired and dirty. We’d like a bath and a bed so we can be ready for tonight.”

“Well, we’ll see, give you a trial, like,” said the woman. “Go on in. I won’t show you to your rooms. I don’t wear these dirty things into the house, and I’ve got a good sight more work to do here, but hopefully you can find your own way without waking the whole house. The girls are still asleep, and there are some gentleman callers hanging around, who I’m sure don’t want to be disturbed.”

They went into the whorehouse. It was nice, very nice. On their first trip into the town, Anastasia had taken it for a wealthy man’s house, a house big enough for a big family, with sumptuous room to spare.

But as she now knew, this was a different kind of house, and as she would soon learn, this was a different kind of family.

AUTHOR BIO

S.E. Burr wrote Time Traveling Hookers over the course of a weekend at a Tom Bird writing retreat in Santa Fe, NM. It is based on a dream she had a few weeks prior to the retreat, but she did no advanced planning of the plot. She was very surprised to discover that the story was a romance, as she did not often read romances, let alone write them. She quite enjoyed the experience and intends to write more romances in the future, but cautions that what she intends to write and what she actually writes can be two very different things.

She is the author of the young adult novel, Goblin Fruit, inspired by the poem “Goblin Market” by Christina Rossetti. The sequel, Goblin Girl, is coming soon. It was inspired by her desire to find out more of the story.

A nearly lifelong resident of rural New Mexico, S.E. Burr loves the desert, her family, and her cat.

Navigator's Tale eBook

Excerpt

His eyes narrowed, glinting ice-silver. In a mere instant, he became dangerous.

Before I could retreat, he ran a hand around the back of my neck. His strong fingers wove into my hair and held my head firmly cupped. My heartbeat spiked and a coil of heat unwound in my stomach as he leaned forward to darkly whisper into my ear. “Were you truly dancing for them, or for me, Hanna?”

I dared not move or speak.

“I wasn’t sure if I wanted to wring your pretty little neck for the uninhibited way you danced in front of those rebels, or if I wanted to cut them all down for gawking at you in your costume. And what possessed you to dance so blasted close to them? You were only a step away from where they sat. Anything could have happened before I reached you.”

I recalled the kiss upon my throat in the deep shadows of the garrison. Perhaps I wasn’t far wrong about the effects of my Irian Seduction Dance on Captain West, except he seemed to be experiencing animosity about it.

“I found and rescued you, Hanna,” he softly growled.

I shivered. Maybe it was best to stay silent and not remind him the attack from a probable Iria Coalition agent occurred because of my contact with him in Callisto City’s Io Spaceport.

“You are mine,” Captain West murmured in my ear. He pressed a possessive kiss on the top tip of it. His lips sent liquid fire through my body. But when he quite firmly bit the tip of my ear, I blinked and gasped with quiet shock. He kissed it once more before releasing his hold on the back of my head. He gently disentangled his fingers from my hair and moved away. He still looked like he wanted to kill something, though.

My body shivered. The air felt several degrees colder around me. In addition, I sensed a rising mantle of subtle power around him as my skin prickled in the wake of an electric wave of energy. Who is this man? What is he—truly? I knew virtually nothing about him, except that he was an Allied Fleet Special Forces commander.

I should have stayed silent. I couldn’t. I might be in awe of Captain West, but I’m not afraid of him…yet. “I didn’t choose this outfit—and guess who forced me to learn stupid Irian Seduction Dances?”

Captain West’s frost-silvered stare blazed at me before he abruptly swung away. He strode toward the stair-tube leading to the upper levels.

I fumed inwardly while gently nursing my nipped ear. A swift glance at my hand revealed a tiny ruby smear of blood. The wet gleam on my finger sent another dart of shocked outrage through me. This unpredictable man is unlike any I’d ever known. I glared at his straight back as he vanished up the stairs. I was not Captain West’s personal property. Just because he happened along at the right moment….

I snatched my jacket up from the deck. I do not belong to him.

INTERVIEW

Tell our readers about you –

Hello and thank you for hosting me on your site today. I’m glad you didn’t place a restriction on how many words to use describing myself, but I can probably describe myself in ten words or less with the help of a few labels: Bookworm. Music Lover. Science Geek. Nature Lover. Artist. Writer. That was easier than composing my Twitter profile.

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?

I’m goal-oriented. Each day brings a new goal and the chance to do something positive. Sometimes family, personal business, or a home project takes precedence. And sometimes it’s writing.

If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?

I’ve never given this much thought, and this wouldn’t appeal to me. I would think any famous person I might want to hang out with might have more important matters to attend to than entertaining me all day.

What’s the story behind your latest book?

The idea was launched by hidden agendas that lurked within some of my jobs—the things that aren’t mentioned during the hiring or project transition process. The book idea was also sparked by frustrated reflections on what people will endure with their jobs, in order to make a living. I decided to have a little fun with the idea when I wondered what work stress in a futuristic world might be like for a single woman working in a non-traditional role. In Hanna’s case, as a ship navigator-pilot. And I complicated her life with a generous dose of galactic intrigue and a stubborn man.

Tell us your writing process

First I need an intriguing story idea to sneak up on me. It has to be a story line that I’ve never read before and have been waiting for someone else to write, but they haven’t. I’m a pantser initially while I’m blocking in the story’s beginning. Then I become a plotter after story logistics intrude and demand that I pay attention.

The story must continue to enthrall me each time I return to it for another crack at discovering my main characters’ big secrets, and wondering what strange avenues the plot will lead me down. Most importantly, the story must make me feel the character’s emotions. Then of course, revisions, edits, doubts, and distracted self-muttering are ongoing throughout the writing process.

Do you have any advice on what promotion has worked for you that you can share with other authors?

I’m still new at this authorship business. I’ve launched three books into the world so far—two of them were major works that were released in the past two months with concentrated promotional efforts. With such a short timeline, it’s not easy to determine my promotion venues’ effectiveness yet. I’ve had two different promo approaches for two books from two different publishers, but using social media was important in both cases. However, it’s a bit daunting to read the blogs circulating online about social media’s ineffectiveness for book promotion and also forecasts about the tiny percentage of actual book readers in existence.

It’s equally dismal reading about the low probabilities forecasted for reaching potential readers through traditional and internet promotions. Not to mention the reality of competition between authors for readers. I can, however, caution aspiring authors that serious promotion is time-consuming. It takes planning and more effort than writing a book—but that’s my personal viewpoint.

When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?

In my early teen years. I started writing when my drawings and paintings could no longer describe the stories I wanted tell. I continued painting however, and found my art frequently influenced my writing. In high school, I had a pen pal, who wrote horror/fantasy and I wrote scifi/fantasy. We read and reviewed each other’s work. Another ignition spark to my writing came in the books I was consuming in all genres, but especially fantasy, romance, and science fiction.

Tell us about your main character:

Hanna is my main character. The story was from her perspective. I had fun exploring her quirky characteristics, resilience, and her peculiar alter-sensory abilities. I loved her strange blend of pragmatic optimism, vulnerability, and courage, despite experiencing personal tragedy in her teen years. It was fun pitting her against Captain West and his brusque nature.

What are you working on next?

More science fiction! One is a story that won’t leave me alone.

Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?

You have a wonderful talent! Let’s see, as for me… I don’t think of my talents as extraordinary either—but I used to create paintings portraying scifi/fantasy story themes in oil/acrylics on canvas—until I ran out of walls to hang them on. That’s when I started writing. I still paint on occasions. I’ve played a few musical instruments. The most notable achievement was landing a coveted spot in my high school’s select concert band with the flute section—the same year we won first place in a big, finicky, all-city competition for the first time in the school’s history!

I love modern dance and have choreographed and performed. Family and friends tell me I have a knack for reinventing food recipes in unusual, tasty ways… I hope they aren’t just being nice. Plants tend to thrive for me… And I think my other special talent is figuring out how things work—which really came in handy with my science career.

Who are your favorite authors?

There are so many! I read almost anything I can get my hands on. Some favorite authors are, Toni Morrison, C.J. Cherryh, Wen Spencer, Alice Walker, Octavia Butler, Patricia Briggs, Mary Stewart, Victoria Holt, Patricia McKillip, Anne McCaffrey, Andre Norton, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Melissa Marr, Karen Marie Moning, Marie Snyder, Connie Willis, Georgette Heyer, Mercedes Lackey, Madeleine L’Engle, Lincoln Preston & Douglas Child… Of course, the list keeps growing.

What do you like to do with your free time?

Read and catch up on other hobbies. Catching up on sleep is always nice, too.

Tell us about your plans for upcoming books.

I would like to complete the Star Navigator Series. But this will likely depend on readers’ response.
