Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000026_00010]

Book Excerpt:

The hospital was in disarray. My mother Pandora threw herself out of the window of her room seconds after I tried to heal her of the darkness that had held her for so long. I thought that healing my mother would cure her of her condition, but clearly, I’d been wrong. Almost regretting my actions, I could not gather the words to explain what really happened.

I think I blacked out for a moment. When I could think clearly again, I realized that a detective was staring me in the face with a little notepad in his hand. He looked at me with concern. “Are you okay, Miss London?” he asked. “You look a little pale.” I trembled slightly as I eyed him, and luckily, he assumed that I was in shock over everything that had happened—which was true to some degree. What he didn’t know was that I was worried that it was becoming harder to hide the truth about myself—about my powers and what I really was, despite the fact that I still hadn’t re-acclimated to being back on the Earthly realm after having astral traveled to so many other realms.

Book Excerpt:

The crackle of musket fire drifted up from the trenches; only a few quick shots at first, but quickly followed by full volleys. Flashes of light marked the battle in the trenches and Raedan listened carefully for the command to push his troops forward. He glanced behind him quickly.

The color guard stood resolute, the banners of Arndell and the North Griffin Cliffs at the front of the formation. A half-company of infantry had been assigned to protect the flags should they come under attack.

Wounded began to drift back out of the trenches. Some retreated under their own power; others were carried between two of their fellows. Raedan tried to count the men fleeing the battle, but quickly lost count.

Finally, the trumpets sounded again, ordering him forward.

“How’s it look in there?” he asked a retreating officer. The man wore the gaudy orange of Sea Watch and the stripes of a captain. He had taken a round through his shoulder and was supporting a corporal that had taken a shot to the leg.

“The artillery did a job on them,” the captain said. “But they’ve still got some fight left.”

“All right, men! Let’s take it to them!” Raedan started toward the trenches at the double time and his men started to trot after him.

The earthworks twisted and zagged one way and another, slowly leading the infantry closer to the fortress that loomed large above. The sun had finally set and flares were exploding high overhead.

Book Tour – K9 Blue: Ground Zero

BBT_TourBanner_K9Blue copy

K9 Blue: Ground Zero

by Matt McCredie

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Police dog handler Mike Winters and his furry partner Falcon love a good chase. They’ll do anything to protect the streets of Sydney, whether it’s tracking a murderer through the woods or breaking up a bar brawl. To them, it’s all fun and games until the bad guy gets hurt. And then it’s just fun.
Lately though, it seems that violent incidents are on the rise. When Mike and Falcon’s beloved commander is killed in action, Mike is determined to bring the perpetrators to justice, but he has no idea just how deep this malevolent plot runs.
A terrorist organisation has devised a plan to attack the city from all sides, and they have taken over a refuelling ship in Sydney Harbour. Mike and Falcon must use all of their wit and courage to battle the killers, expose police corruption, and, if they’re lucky, save a city from obliteration.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Book Excerpt:

Mike looked down at Falcon, who was totally focused on the menacing figure in front of him. He knew then that there was only going to be one way to take this lunatic in: violently. He drew his .40-calibre Glock pistol, the curved rough grip of the handle fitting his hand comfortably, giving him confidence. Fifteen police rounds and a police dog versus a psycho and his knife. Mike liked his chances, but did not underestimate the ability of the man in front of him. He switched off the torch as he switched on the light source attached to the base of his pistol. Still enough to light up his target, but not quite enough to keep blinding him. There was no way he could wait for backup, as he had lost radio communications and didn’t know how many other coppers, if any, were following him in. He and Falcon were going to have to handle the situation alone. He couldn’t risk letting this criminal escape.

Falcon started to go berserk again, straining as they moved forward to take his target on. The dog didn’t know what this guy had done and he didn’t know how dangerous he really was. He just knew that he was going to take him down with his dad like they had done so many times before.

Mike and Falcon edged in closer. ‘DROP THE WEAPON. GET ON THE GROUND!’

At three metres, the phantom moved. He passed the glinting knife back and forth between his hands in an attempt to keep the pig and his dog guessing. Bending forward, he moved in a wide circle, daring the two of them to come in closer to where he could drive.

his blade through their flesh. Gutting them would be a pleasure. Unfortunately for him, though, his eyes were still trying to adjust from the torch’s intense light to the relative darkness supplied by the smaller light source. The loose branches and rocks strewn over the uneven surface of the clearing gave way beneath his boots, sending him down on one knee with the knife still firmly in his hand.

This was Mike’s chance. He didn’t hesitate for even half a second. Screaming his command for Falcon to attack, he released his aching grip from the straining harness. ‘GET HIM!’

Falcon shot forward with total focus and purpose. Flying through the air, he hit his target on the full and clamped his jaws down around the sinewy biceps of the murderer, who yelped when he saw a full white set of canines scream out of the darkness and straight into his arm. Mike’s command to attack wasn’t really necessary — Falcon knew what had to be done and he was doing it. The murderer was knocked completely off-balance, crashing to the ground. Mike quickly slammed his pistol back into its holster and grabbed hold of his large aluminium torch, all the while moving in to help out his mate. There was no hesitation; his partner had done the hard part, now it was Mike’s turn to earn his money. This psycho was still armed.

‘Good boy — give it to him, mate!’ The big cop came over the top of Falcon, who was still clamped down on the murderer’s arm and violently shaking his head back and forth, driving his canines further and further into the tearing flesh. The big dog growled as he pig-rooted his prey back towards the dark line of trees. Mike momentarily lost sight of the blade.

‘Shit, shit, shit. Where’s the knife?’ Mike swung the torch down as hard as he could on the murderer’s arm, just as he viciously hacked the blade out of the dark at Falcon’s snout. The torch smashed into the man’s forearm, shattering the bone with a brutal strike. It stopped the blade attack in its tracks and propelled the deadly steel onto the ground, clattering out of sight. Mike dropped the torch and drew his right fist high above his head.

‘Giddy up!’ he yelled.

His fist slammed straight down into the centre of the balaclava with a sickening thud that shattered bone and cartilage, spreading the man’s nose flat across his face. His head bounced off the unforgiving ground with a crack. Mike swore, rubbing his swelling knuckles in his left hand. The man went limp, his balaclava stained with the blood which poured from his broken nose. Falcon was still biting down hard and fighting, the punch spurring him on. He wouldn’t quit until he was told to. Triumphantly he dragged the unresisting carcass across the rocky ground. Mike located the blade and bagged it, and then yelled his command to Falcon, who reluctantly let go. He trotted back to Mike’s side, but never once took his eyes off the prized catch. Mike gave his dog a well-deserved pat on his head.

Book Excerpt:

“You don’t remember seein’ me that day before I talked to you at the bar, do you?” Kat thought about it and then shook her head. “I didn’t think so.” Tucker scratched along his jaw, and sighed.

“Well, I saw you. I saw you up the street, runnin’ and dodgin’ people.” He smiled at the memory. “I still don’t understand how you women run in heels.” He shook his head in disbelief, and maybe even a little awe. “Your legs, I noticed immediately. Your umbrella lifted up a few times and I saw your face, stopped my heart for a beat or two. Then I saw where you were headed, knew right then I had to get to the door before you did. Had to find a way to get your attention.” His eyes dropped. “But it didn’t work. You looked right past me, like I wasn’t even there. I heard your name when you checked in, and then I knew I had a decision to make.” He looked down at the coffee mug squeezed between his large hands.

“We can argue all night about me not comin’ clean on who I was. But the truth, for me, is once I knew you didn’t recognize my name, didn’t know I was the one you were waiting for, I decided then and there to be Tucker Williams—the man, not the pompous venture capitalist.” He paused, searched for recognition. She rewarded him with the hint of a grin at the echo of her own words. “I wanted a chance, Kat. I wanted you. I wanted you to flirt with me the way you did that pretty boy behind the bar.”

He chewed at the inside of his cheek and waited. Kat glanced down at her lap, attempted to hide her smile.

“I’m not the sorta guy you usually go for, am I?”

“Not even close.”

“So why did you, Kat?”

Maybe-someday came for Robyn in 2013 when she published the Keeper Series, a new adult romantic suspense story. Then she shifted gears and decided to pen a novel with a much more mature cast—Chain of Title was born, her bestselling title. All of Robyn’s stories contain one key element that her readers love: a strong, independent heroine.

When she’s not spending time with her fictional families, she loves to spend time with her real one: her high school sweetheart, their two moody teenagers, and a pampered rescue mutt.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Book Excerpt:
With her heart beating wildly, under the cover of the loud music, she tiptoed toward the bedroom window where the fire escape was.  Praying that the man would not turn toward the bedroom, she quietly raised the window while holding her breath and praying it wouldn’t make a sound.  Not daring to look back, she dropped herself onto the landing, sucking in frigid air and almost choking as her feet hit the icy metal.
Melissa flew down the fire escape slipping and sliding on the smooth, glassy coating.  Her bare foot slipped out from under her on the last step sending her reeling back onto the stairs and hitting her head.  Looking up, she saw the masked man lean out of the window above her.
Melissa had no time to even check her head for blood as she wrenched herself from the sidewalk and ran for her life.
Title: The Fall of the Midnight Scorpions
Author: Thea Landen
Genre: Sci-Fi Romance
A year has passed since Ro Bernard escaped from the Midnight Scorpions, a clandestine group of mercenaries that exists in the outside world as little more than myths and rumors. Though haunted by the reprehensible acts she committed and witnessed as a member of the organization, her primary focus is keeping a roof over her head and food on her plate. A chance encounter leads her to Karin Cassels, whose son died in the Scorpions’ underground laboratory. While sharing details about her son’s research, Ro reveals the most disturbing information she has on the group. Their leader, scientist Dane Zedek, has been integrating cybernetic parts with human soldiers in the hopes of building himself a lethal army that will help him achieve even greater political power.
The women hatch a plan to take down the Midnight Scorpions with two ultimate goals: kill Zedek, and rescue Callum, Ro’s lover who was the first of the scientist’s experimental hybrids. For additional assistance, Dr. Cassels directs Ro to Reggie Quinn, a drifter who is no stranger to odd jobs and risky situations. Reggie agrees to join the cause in exchange for a percentage of whatever they loot from the Scorpions’ base.
They embark on an adventure throughout three warring countries to assemble their team and gather the necessary materials for their schemes. Along the way, Ro tries to fight her growing attraction to Reggie, especially as reminders of her unhappy past keep resurfacing. Love and redemption wait for her at the end of her mission to defeat the Midnight Scorpions…assuming she makes it out alive.
Book Excerpt
“If we could just put the guns down for five minutes, you’ll find out that we’re actually trying to stop some of the shady goings-on that only lead to more fighting and bloodshed,” Ro said. “And we thought you might be able to help.”
Mielle pursed her raspberry lips into a straight line. After another moment of quiet tension, she hooked her foot around a chair behind her and dragged it over to the table. She sat down and crossed her legs and arms without putting the gun away. “I’m listening.”
Reggie holstered his gun and sat down, keeping his hands on the table. Ro did the same, accepting they were the intruders with questionable intentions in this situation. “We’ll try to be brief,” she said. “If you saw combat with the Tektani troops and you keep your eyes and ears open, which I’m sure you do, I’ll assume you’ve heard of a little group called the Midnight Scorpions.”
Mielle snorted and spat on the floor beside her. “Mercenary scum,” she said coldly. “I always said that dealing with them was more trouble than it’s worth.”
“We’d heard you were a woman of great intelligence,” Reggie said.
“The world would be a better place without them,” Ro continued. “So we’re going to see if we can find a way to remove them from this bloody equation that never seems to have a solution.”
“It’s not the worst idea I’ve ever heard.” Mielle’s shoulders relaxed, though she kept her pistol gripped in her hand. “But I don’t understand why you came looking for me.”
“After we fight our way through there and eradicate their leader and his favorite minions, we figured we might as well just lay waste to the entire place,” Ro said. “Right, Ted?”
Ted hadn’t moved since his armed companions had taken their seats. Eyes wide, his attention remained focused on his newest acquaintance, specifically on her prominent chest. Ro sighed and shook her head. “Ted!”
Mielle unfolded her arms and leaned forward. Reggie shifted as if to retrieve his weapon again, and Ro hoped another confrontation wasn’t imminent. Rather than brandishing her gun, the Tektani woman simply slid a single finger under Ted’s chin and angled his head until they made eye contact. She stuck her tongue out and made an unpleasant face before letting go of him and settling back in her chair.
Ro let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding.
“As you seem familiar with my resume, I’ll assume that you want me to handle the destruction of the Scorpions’ hideout,” Mielle said.
“That’s the plan, yes.”
Would anything change if women ruled the world?
Fifteen years after the Last War devastated families and infrastructure, women have taken over under the banner of peace and equality. Only too late do they realize it’s a slippery slope to oppression. In RUN Ragged, Rhia, a strong and independent sea captain finds herself trapped in The Center, a re-education facility designed to help people fit into the rules of the new matriarchal society. The warden claims to be guiding those in her care, but Rhia quickly sees the cracks in the system. Faced with the terrifying torture and brainwashing the warden inflicts, those cracks become gaping holes that threaten to pull Rhia down into the depths of despair. Can she resist this slow subversion and become the reluctant hero the inmates need?
RUN Ragged is the suspenseful second story by the award-winning author of Women’s Work. It’s a disturbing look at what price we are willing to pay for peace and how much we are willing to ignore to keep our conscience clear.
GENRE: Romance/Mystery/Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A mystery is introduced in No Ordinary Day, the first book in the Extraordinary Days series that is carried through all eight volumes and solved in the last book, Sunday’s Child: Born on the Sabbath Day, due out in January of 2017.

In the late spring of 1991, a flood and fire of historic proportions tore through the pretty resort town of Obergrande, New York, in the central region of the Adirondack mountains.

The twin disasters destroyed a large part of the east side of the town that bordered the Hudson River and Lake Obergrande.

In the aftermath, a new dam was built, and that damaged part of the town “drowned,” covered by the new, larger lake.

During that terrible flood, five kindergarten girls were trapped in their drowning school, huddled together as the water rose higher, rescued just in the nick of time. The nightmare bonded them, and three others like them, to each other for life.

These are their stories.

International attorney and human rights advocate Elisa Santiago believes she has life under control—an impressive career, a solid group of friends in Obergrande, and a handsome law partner for hot “car action” when she needs release. Little does she know that her entire world is about to burn down when she discovers that nothing she believes she knows about herself and her past is true. Can the gorgeous former CIA operative, acting as her guide and guard as she returns to Colombia, the land of her birth, looking for answers, set her world on fire in a good way?

THURSDAY’S CHILD: Far to Go is the fifth book in the eight-book series The Extraordinary Days by breakthrough novelist Polly Becks. The first book, No Ordinary Day, tells the tale of an epic tragedy that changes life forever in a small town in the wild, mystic Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, and the mystery surrounding that tragedy.

Book Excerpt:

Present day, Sunday, September 8th, 2:11 PM

Le Mille Neuf, 1009 Rue de Bleury, penthouse, Montreal

The young man at the front desk in the luxury apartment building looked up in surprise at the quartet of women making their way across the lobby, carrying what looked like a variety of flowers, sweets, and boxes, chatting happily amongst themselves as every male head in the lobby turned in their direction.

An older man in the uniform of a professional driver or chauffeur was following them, his arms piled high with packages, puffing slightly.

The women, who were carrying on an intense four-way conversation between them, did not notice the attention they were garnering like magnets. They ranged in height from just over five feet to just under six, with a variety of body types, hair and skin colors ranging from alabaster to ebony, and clothing styles, all of which had some sort of bright artistry to them.

They stopped in front of the desk.

The tallest of the group, a fair-skinned beauty with gray eyes and shoulder-length brown hair atop a tall, willowy figure, smiled down at him.

“Penthouse deux, s’il vous plait,” she said politely in a perfect French accent.

The young man slid his swivel chair quickly under the desk to shield his lap from view.

“Qui appelle?” he asked in a French-Canadian accent. “Er—whom shall I say is calling?” He picked up the phone.

“The—uhm—Fivesome,” Briony Windsor, known as Sarah to her friends, said.

The young man waited for an answer, requested permission for entry and, receiving it, directed the four women to the penthouse elevator, only to discover they had started across the back lobby while he was hanging up.

They already knew where they were going.

“Has anyone heard from Sloane’s father recently?” Dr. Corinne Byrnes, a veterinarian and the second-tallest member of the group asked the others as they entered the elevator and pushed the button for the top floor.

“I spoke to him last night,” said Reverend Grace Fuller, the Associate Pastor of the Obergrande Community Church back in New York State. “He says she seems to be doing better, as long as she rests. Apparently he hasn’t been entirely successful at keeping her in bed.”

“Shocker,” mused Elisa Santiago, esq., a practicing attorney and civil rights advocate who divided her time between law on the international stage and a quiet practice back in Obergrande, the pretty Adirondack hometown of the four young women and the friend they had come to visit. At five-foot-three, she was petite, like Grace, and extraordinarily well put-together, every detail of her wardrobe perfect, just as every detail of her business and personal life seemed to be.

“Well, between us we have plenty of things to keep her amused in bed,” said Briony. “Although that’s like selling ice to penguins; Sloane has made of art of being kept amused in bed most of her life.”

“Truth,” mused Corinne as the elevator doors opened, providing a stunning view of downtown Montreal and its exquisite spires.

The four women hurried down the sunlit hallway of windows to the door where the number 2 was elegantly displayed.

Elisa pushed the doorbell.

A tall, strapping, dark-haired man with a finely-featured, neatly-bearded face opened the door a moment later.

All four women blinked in surprise.

“Dr. Marlowe?” Elisa’s voice broke the silence.

The man’s dark blue eyes blinked as well.

“Come in, ladies,” he said quickly.

The women looked at each other, then followed him into the penthouse.

“What’s he doing here?” Grace whispered to Briony. “Sloane told me they couldn’t stand each other.” Briony shrugged.

“Perhaps they’re working on the Quadricentennial?” Elisa suggested as they passed through the elegant central foyer into the open living area, a high-ceilinged room ringed with floor-to-ceiling windows.

She turned to Corinne, the only one not to have met Nathan Marlowe. “He’s a world-class history professor here at McGill and in New York at NYU, a specialist in the Adirondack Park area and particularly in Obergrande. Sloane’s mother hired him to do the authentication and other research for the town’s four-hundredth anniversary next May.”

“Well, if her mother likes him, I can see why Sloane can’t stand him,” said Corinne. “Those two can’t agree on whether the sun is up or not.”

Dr. Marlowe was standing at the far left edge of the open sitting area, next to the door that led to Sloane’s bedroom suite.

The women and their driver, still lugging their packages, followed him.

A glorious spicy smell filled the air near the kitchen.

On their way past a recessed alcove in which a towering animal cage stood, Corinne paused and clicked softly at the sweet, melon-sized animal inside it.

“Hiya, Pfeffernusse,” she said. “You’re lookin’ good, gurrl.”

Ed Hillenbrandt, the driver, waited until she was following the other girls again, then paused in front of the cage himself.

“I still say you would make a nice hat,” he whispered.

Pfeffernusse just stared at him with her big black chinchilla eyes. Then she flicked her large ears and spun around, her white belly disappearing from view as she turned her gray-blue back to him.

“You’re not by any means the first female to give me the cold shoulder, ma’am,” Ed said as he went to join the women.

REVIEWS

Praise for Jason Brannon

Jason Brannon shows us a place of reckoning and judgments, of creatures that wait to ensnare us. The Maze is a novel of damnation and deliverance, of corridors fortified with death and spirituality. I found a bit of myself in The Maze.” ~ Steven Lloyd, author of The Wooden Box

From his style, you’d think Jason Brannon was the dark double of Ray Bradbury. He cares more about character and realism than most writers I’ve read and his plots flow like well-orchestrated music. Indeed, Brannon’s writing has a classical feel, reminiscent of the best traditional work in the genre, even when he’s going for gut-wrenching terror and torture in-extremis.” ~ Michael Arnzen, International Horror Guild Award winning author of Grave Markings (Dell Abyss)

Brannon’s work reminds me of the glory days of The Twilight Zone, when it was in black and white and carried bylines like Beaumont and Matheson. Often surreal, sometimes disturbing and sometimes enlightening, there’s real substance in his tales that few of his contemporaries can match.” ~ Mike Oliveri, Bram Stoker Award winning author of “Deadliest of the Species”

BOOK EXCERPT

The maze was complex and mysterious, and like snowflakes, no two mazes were identical.  Each labyrinth was built from the blueprint of a man’s life and tailored to fit his soul.  Sins and virtues alike were included in the architecture.  Yet, in this case, the transgressions were far more plentiful.

The cobblestone steps lay covered in thick tangles of thorny vines. The air stank of decay and decadence; the hallways were encrusted with black ice and sin. Angels roamed the hallways with hammers and chisels, feverishly writing on the walls. Some carved instructions for the tortured soul who would soon find himself trapped inside. Others planted clues for his escape. Demons skulked in the darker places and searched for hiding places to deploy traps. Others sharpened weapons.

Only two outcomes awaited the man who would soon be imprisoned within the walls of the maze. The angels hoped for redemption. The demons hoped for death.

Men had stumbled in the darkness of the maze before and given up their souls willingly in order to escape. Others solved the puzzles within, realized the true potential of this place, and became new creatures. Transformation was the key to freedom from this particular prison. However, some never figured that out and stumbled in darkness forever.

Asterion had a special role to play. Inside these twisting, turning passageways, he was the law. Neither angel nor demon had a stronghold here. The decision to escape the maze or wander in darkness belonged entirely to the lost soul. The choice couldn’t be forced. The demons, however, always looked for an advantage. Often times they cheated, going outside the maze to find a way to gain the upper hand. The moment the minotaur heard flute song, he knew what they had done.

They had called for reinforcements, and The Piper had finally arrived.

Asterion watched as imps hefted pickaxes, pushed carts filled with rock, raised new walls, set snares, and consulted the blueprint for the labyrinth to make sure all of the appropriate sins would be included in the architecture. Conviction or destruction of the heart depended on that more than anything else. As they worked, Asterion heard them snickering to themselves. The demons thought they were clever calling in The Piper.  What the demons didn’t realize was that the angels snickered too.  Prayers were being offered up by the faithful, and their prayers were being heard.

The war had begun.

shadowsbanner

Author: Stewart Bint

Genre: Paranormal, Horror

Young Simon Reynolds lives a bucolic life at his family home, White Pastures, surrounded by a loving family and a charming community. Simon finishes his A levels and looks forward to unwinding while his sisters work on their tans.

Meanwhile the tiny community of Meriton has been plagued by a spate of burglaries, and White Pastures seems to be next. A shadowy figure stalks the house, but the police can find no signs of an intruder.

Inspired by the author’s real-life experience with the supernatural, In Shadows Waiting recounts a summer that changes the Reynolds’ lives forever. As the summer progresses, the shadows take on an altogether more sinister implication, and White Pastures begins to reveal a terrifying secret.

The epicenter of an event that has scarred an entire community, White Pastures grows more and more dark, possessed by a shadow that yearns, a shadow that will not be denied. At White Pastures, someone will die — but love never will.
