“So how do you feel? And I need you to be honest with me,” Symon asked.
“No pain. Honestly. Not from the jaw, not from my arm and not from the ribs,” Nadine replied.
Symon sighed. “Okay, I believe you. You are cleared for takeoff,” he said with a smirk.
As soon as Symon uttered those words, Nadine took to the air and screamed at the top of her lungs. She started doing laps above Heinz field, circling ever higher and farther outward. From the second Nadine had learned to fly, every takeoff had been for a purpose: fighting Spidre’s peacekeeper soldiers, saving Edgar so she could confess her love, escaping an ambush, playing her part in bringing down the Net Tower and crippling the military’s communications. Add to that an additional six weeks of being grounded due to injuries from the net tower assault, and it all made this into a moment of complete ecstasy for her. She hoped to follow this celebratory flight with a celebratory fight, but when she looked south, where the peacekeepers had decided to attack today, she could see them in retreat at the hands of Edgar, Naren, and Victor.
As much as she wanted to get involved, she knew that if they had it under control, then strategically speaking she was more useful waiting at Heinz field in case another attack came from somewhere else. Spidre’s army had tried this strategy many times while she was recovering, and on a few occasions they’d almost succeeded. So she descended back to the field, toward a lonely orange glow at the northeast corner. It was Sera. She was awake but lying down on a mattress with a bunch of pillows propping up her back.
“Glad to see you didn’t forget how to fly!” Sera joked as Nadine landed next to her.
Nadine chuckled. “I spent 26 years trying to get off the ground. You are all lucky I ever came back down.”

Partly due to his chronic illness, Nate always had a special place in his heart for the X-Men, and especially the invulnerable Wolverine. Tell us about you as a person.
I have a wife and two kids, but I’ve lived with my cat Tilt for longer than any of them. I have a really cool job that no one has ever heard of and that’s really hard to describe to others. And I pick up new hobbies like the wind picks up leaves. The hobby list currently stands at fishing, trading card collecting, metal detecting, and fossil hunting, although I’m sure I’m forgetting something.
If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
There aren’t any celebrities that I have an overwhelming desire to meet, but there are certainly folks I would love to pitch my books too in the hopes they get picked up for a movie/tv show/video game! Energy Crisis is hard science fiction and a superhero story, so I always imagined Christopher Nolan being a good fit as a director. I’d welcome the opportunity to pitch it to him (Chris, if you’re reading this, call me!).
What’s the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is a sequel, so there is literally a whole other book behind my latest one. The current release, Kinetics, and its predecessor, Latency, make up the Energy Crisis series. It is a story of six individuals who are wanted dead by the world government due to the powers they accidentally gained from a biotechnological malfunction. In Latency, the six of them find each other and begin their counterattack. In Kinetics, the government they are fighting grows desperate, and forces a final win-or-die showdown.
What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their latest book?
I found myself very often wanting to inquire with a bookstore or podcaster if they’d have me for an event or interview, but being very nervous about asking and making a fool of myself. I am sure I made a fool of myself plenty, but that’s ok! Take the risk and ask. The worst case scenario is that they say no, but with a slight air of arrogance.
List 5 things on your bucket list.
My bucket list at the moment is very focused around my various hobbies.
1. I would love to go on some sort of epic fishing adventure, like in the remote areas of Alaska or in the Amazon rainforest.
2. I want to find an actual dinosaur fossil. All the fossils I have found so far are from invertebrates and they are all really cool, but my inner five-year-old wants that dino bone!
3. I look forward to the day when I find something historically significant with my metal detector. I have only had the detector for about a year and I’ve already found some amazing things, so I know that this one is only a matter of time.
4. For those who don’t know, many modern trading cards (baseball cards and other non-sports cards) have super rare cards that are individually numbered, like #12 out of 50 or #3 out of 10. It hope to one day pull a 1 of 1 card, where it is literally the only one that exists.
5. Whether my book sells one million copies or one hundred, I hope that one day I randomly run into someone on the street who knows me only by my work and is excited to meet me.

I have been reading love stories for as long as I can remember and
when I ‘met’ the classic authors like Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, Henry
James The Brontë sisters, etc. during my Honours studies, I was hooked for
life. I married my college boyfriend and soul mate and after 47 years, 3
interesting and wonderful children and 4 beautiful grandchildren, he still
makes me weak in the knees. We are fortunate to live in the picturesque little
seaside village of Betty’s Bay, South Africa with the ocean a block away and a
beautiful mountain right behind us. And although life so far has not always
been an easy ride, it has always been an exciting and interesting one! I like
the heroines in my stories to be beautiful, feisty, independent and headstrong.
And the heroes must be strong but possess a generous amount of sensitivity.
They are of course, also gorgeous! My stories typically incorporate the family
background of the characters to better understand where they come from and who
they are when we meet them in the story.

began his career as a Southern California newspaper police reporter, one of his
crime stories becoming key evidence in a murder case that spanned decades.
Before
turning to fiction, Bacon wrote business books, one of which was printed in four languages and three editions
and named best business book of the year by the Library Journal. His articles
have appeared in the Washington Post, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Denver Post, San
Antonio Express News, and many other publications. Most recently he was a
correspondent for the San Francisco Chronicle.
Death in
Nostalgia City, the first in his five-book series, was recommended by the
American Library Association. Desert Kill Switch, the second series book, was

some of his ideas from experience as a police reporter and also from his work
