Event Horizon w/ Aether & Ichor, 10th May

In Edinburgh there lives an awesome sci-fi magazine called Shoreline of Infinity. I sometimes write book reviews for it. Every month SoI hosts a free reading event, called Event Horizon.

Now, you’ve heard of peanut butter and chocolate, and you’ve heard of peanut butter and jam, let me introduce you to another of the world’s greatest flavour combinations: Shoreline of Infinity and Aether & Ichor.

Aether & Ichor is a fantasy webzine, also based in Edinburgh, that I edit stories for. On 10th Ma...

Review: New York 2140 by Kim Stanley Robinson

New York City, the year 2142. Melting polar ice caps have caused mass floods around the globe, leaving Manhattan swimming in the drink. But Kim Stanley Robinson’s New York 2140 is no post-apocalypse piece, here the city that never sleeps is as vibrant as ever, living under its new moniker, ‘The Super-Venice’.

My review of New York 2140 was first published in Shoreline of Infinity issue 10 and is now available to read in full on the magazine’s website.

Read Salt the Earth by Callum Dougan on Aether & Ichor

You can now read Edinburgh author Callum Dougan‘s short story, Salt the Earth, on Aether & Ichor.

This is another piece I worked on personally along with the rest of the A&I team, a tale of elemental magic and a teenager embarrassed by her parents.

Read it in full here.

Read The Dog Walker in Surreal Nightmares II / Editor’s choice award

Two pieces of awesome news in one here!

First up, Surreal Nightmares II (published by James Ward Kirk Publishing) – containing my short story The Dog Walker – is now available on Amazon in print and on kindle.

It sits in good company beside other surrealist horror stories and mind-bending poetry.

Secondly, The Dog Walker was selected by JWK Publishing for an editor’s choice award!

One prose and one fiction piece from the anthology were picked for the prizes by editors  Sebastian Crow and Jam...

Fishing for Reviews

Hello all! In a bid to boost my self-published stories (and ego) I’m reaching out to try and get anyone who has read one of my books to leave a rating or short review on Amazon.

It doesn’t have to be a thesis, just a few short words to let others know what you thought. You can even be honest, if you like.

I appreciate everyone who has already supported my writing by reading my stories and buying my books, I’ll definitely be bringing some more stuff your way this year.

If you’re keen, you can...

Kindle price drop

In 2016 I self-published Beaten to a Pulp! (a short story collection) and my first novel, Dead in Autumn, Buried in Winter.

Check out the blurbs below, you can shop for them here.

Old Blue Eyes, Madonna, Chewbacca and Frankenstein’s Monster go trick-or-treating in the upmarket part of town. They find a lavish three-storey house lying empty, the keys left in the lock. They should po...

Surreal Nightmares II

It’s been a good start to 2018 for me, with a horror short story of mine, The Dog Walker, being accepted for the second volume of the Surreal Nightmares anthology by James Ward Kirk Fiction.

Surreal Nightmares II is a collection of surrealist horror stories and poetry, and is sure to be full to the brim with bizarre tales and creepy monsters. My own story involves a distorted Lovecraftian version of Glasgow’s Queen’s Park, where I take my dog Bella for her daily strolls, which she is ungratef...

The Tattoo by Rick Brooks on Aether & Ichor

Around summertime I joined up with fantasy website Aether & Ichor as a guest editor.

Now, one of the first pieces I worked on with them has been published, and you can check it out on the A&I website here.

The Tattoo by Rick Brooks is the story of slimy corporate fixer, womaniser, and all-round bastard Leo, whose brush with a strange young woman in a bar could be his chance for redemption.

Read on…

Aether & Ichor is a fantasy website based in Edinburgh. They published my short story Naoko in...

Shoreline of Infinity 10

Issue 10 of Shoreline of Infinity is now out, featuring some great sci-fi short stories, flash fictions, and a book review of Kim Stanley Robinson’s New York 2140 by yours truly.

Shoreline of Infinity is an Edinburgh-based sci-fi magazine. You can get the new issue, and back issues, here.

Below is a snippet of what I thought of Robinson’s climate-fiction tale of a drowned New York City.

Review: New York 2140 by Kim Stanley Robinson

New York, New York, it’s a helluva town! So goes the song, a...

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Hera sat beneath the reindeer skeleton. It was made of aluminium and flashing fairy lights; its innards were red and gold baubles. It towered three metres above, from bolted-down hoof to the tip of its great antlers, where the electric cable fed into the window of the department store. And in the space between its feet, under its hollow body, was a dry patch of pavement, free from the slush and brown grit of mid-December snowfall, free from tramping boots and swinging shopping bags. Here Hera...
