ICE STYLE.....Beijing Olympics 2022 FIGURE SKATING COSTUMES: The MEN!

Costume Men--(L to R) Nathan Chen of USA, Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan, and Shoma Uno of Japan--Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics
IT'S OLYMPICS TIME! This means...it's also ICE STYLE time! I am so excited to discuss the FASHION and COSTUMES of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics here on my "Ice Style" BLOG...

Sequin Men--(L to R) Donovan Carrillo of Mexico, Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan, and Shoma Uno of Japan--Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics

There are A LOT of costumes to discuss for all the skaters and disciplines but since the Men's Competition just ended, let's begin with the MEN:

Yuzuru Hanyu Japan Short Program--In his much-anticipated return to the Olympics, Yuzuru skated his Short Program to Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Camille Saint-Saëns, performed by Shinya Kiyozuka. He wore this lilac and pale blue ombre dyed design featuring diagonal strips of sequined chiffon in silver and gold with raw-cut hem details and a nude illusion neckline. The intricate top was paired with simple clean pants. I liked the delicacy of the design and fabrication of the top, and especially the 3D effect, which added fluttery interest as he skated.

Score: 8.95

Free Skate to Ten to Chi to ("Heaven and Earth") by Isao Tomita--For his Free Skate, Yuzuru wore this Japanese Kimono-like costume, highlighting the music of which he skated. This is the same program and costume he wore last season. Once again, there was similar coloring to his Short Program costume with an added tie-dye effect. I loved (again) the 3D sequin applique details but my favorite part was THAT BELT! The black with gold detailing "mini-Obi" belt was great and looked as if it had come from the Gucci runways!

9.00

Shoma Uno Japan Short Program--Skating his Short Program to Oboe Concerto by A. Marcello
Oboe Concerto (Concerto In C Minor For Cello) by A. Vivaldi, Shoma wore this costume. I said this the first time I saw him wear this in competition and I will say it again: This is PROBABLY THE BEST MEN'S COSTUME this season! I absolutely loved the gorgeous cowl draping, the asymmetrical design...the exquisite sequined top underneath...it was a figure skating costume on an Haute Couture level! I bow down.9.99

Free Skate to Bolero (Boléro IV New Breath) by Maurice Ravel, performed by Tomotaka Okamoto--Skating to a more "dance club" version of Ravel's iconic "Bolero", Shoma wore this toreador-like costume which I loved. I thought the black with gold leaf-like sequin applique look was beautiful and reminiscent of something I would find at Versailles. I also thought the placement was smart in that it was not overpowering for such a small guy. I especially liked how the sequins were on the sides as well as framing the bolero jacket. Elegant and very pretty.9.50
Yuma Kagiyama Japan Short Program--Yuma skated his Short Program to When You're Smiling by Michael Buble for both the Team and Men's Competitions, wearing this look. The shirt-and-pant costume was very representative of a "Lounge Act" look, or at least the more "razzle-dazzle" Vegas version. Normally, when male skaters skate to something like this, they cheapen out and bore me to tears with some yawn-inducing white shirt and black pants look, so I was happy that Yuma's costume team took it further. I liked the gold crystal details framing the shirt and his torso, as well as the sleeve bands/cuffs. The look made me smile...just like his skate.8.75
Free Skate to Gladiator Rhapsody (from "Gladiator") by Hans Zimmer, Not Yet (from "Gladiator") by Hans Zimmer, performed by Lisa Gerrard, I Gladiatore (from "Gladiator") by Hans Zimmer, Nelle Tue Mani (Now We Are Free) ( from "Gladiator") by Hans Zimmer, performed by Andrea Bocelli--Yuma wore this black and gold costume for his "Gladiator"-themed skate. As you can tell, there was a costume homage to the film and its protagonist, represented by a gold "chest plate/armor" on the top, as well as the sleeve details. The costume and details were delicate and not too "Halloween" costume-like. 8.25
Nathan Chen USA Short Program--Skating to La Boheme by Charles Aznavour, USA's Nathan Chen wore this look above. Let's just start with the fact that Nathan is not known for his costumes. He veers between looking as if he just went in his closet to find the most comfortable item, to looking as if he's at some tie-dye hippie festival! I do not fault him since well...the man is A QUAD BEAST! But as a fashion guy, I'd like to see something...from Nathan, every now and then. For his Short Program, he wore this black tuxedo/dinner jacket outfit which goes with the music of the famous French Chanson crooner Monsieur Aznavour; it was his effort to look as if he was the singer at a French Cafe, performing to chic guests. The jacket was not really a jacket since it didn't have proper front closures, and was more of a pullover top. He wore it with matching black pants, a white pocket hankie, and a white t-shirt. While I wish he would have worn a proper white dress shirt/tuxedo shirt, unbuttoned of course...the t-shirt was definitely more Nathan.8.35
BTW: The above was what he wore, for the same music, for his 2019-2020 Season, at Skate America. He went more "I'm a waiter for a wedding in La Jolla" vibe, I guess.

Free Skate to Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (from "Rocket Man") by Elton John, Bernie Taupin performed by Taron Egerton & Jamie Bell, Rocket Man (from "Rocket Man") by Elton John, Bernie Taupin performed by Taron Egerton, and Bennie and the Jets (from "Rocket Man") by Elton John, Bernie Taupin performed by Elton John, Pink & Logic--Skating to an Elton John Medley, Nathan skated to Olympic GOLD history...and he also wore this. He paired what were probably the same black pants he wore in his Short Program, with this colorful tie-dye-like top. I didn't hate the top, but I didn't necessarily like it; I kept thinking whether or not those white marks were BLEACH stains?! And it also had a certain "Star Trek" vibe. Well, who cares! He won the GOLD!7.50
BTW: Earlier this year, Nathan wore this version of the top at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships held in Nashville Tennessee. It was more kaleidoscope-y like and looked more like an interstellar planetary explosion...with what looks like a GREEN planet starting it all...
He also wore this one back during the 2019-2020 Season, at Skate America to the same music. One thing is for sure, he likes the tie-dye!
Which top do you guys like best? Beijing Olympics or U.S. Nationals? Or None?
Junhwan Cha Republic of Korea Short Program--Skating to Fate of the Clockmaker by Eternal Eclipse, Flynn Hase Spence, Cloak and Dagger by Bianca Ban, Junhwan wore this black costume which featured black pants and a black solid-and-see-through top. The top had delicate details including minimal sequin applique and interesting see-through panels. The overall look was not necessarily costume-exciting but what I did love was the surprise of the fluttery "ruffles" in the back, which you can see in the photo above. These flutters were quite lovely to see as he skated, reminding me of wings.9.00
Free Skate to Popoli de Pekino by Giacomo Puccini, Violin Fantasy on Puccini's Turandot by Vanessa-Mae, Turandot, Act 3: Nessun Dorma (Turandot, Act 3) by Giacomo Puccini, performed by Jose Carreras--Skating to Puccini's "Turandot", Junhwan wore this deep indigo blue top with gorgeous sequin yoke details and blouson sleeves. I thought the sequin work framed his face and neckline very well and gave a slight air of the iconic opera and its Near East/China theme.
8.55
Jason Brown USA Short Program--Jason Brown skated his fabulous Short Program to Sinnerman by Nina Simone wearing this sexy, gorgeous look. The music is Nina Simone and I thought this costume was a perfect costume foil to her sultry, silky voice and that music. I absolutely loved the modern dance-like sleek styling, and especially the solid panels layered over see-through stretch fabric seen on the top, molding to his torso like a second skin. The crystals were also a nice touch, complementing this chic look.9.50
Free Skate to Auschwitz-Birkenau (from "Schindler's List") by John Williams, Theme from "Schindler's List"  (from "Schindler's List") by John Williams, I Could Have Done More  (from "Schindler's List") by John Williams--For his Free Skate to "Schindler's List", Jason wore the costume above, which featured a gray/silver top with red, yellow and black color accents in an ombre/tie-dye effect. The dye effect had a violent look to it, with hints of fire, perhaps war with an almost barbed wire treatment. I am sure the subtle-yet-not-so-subtle artistry on his top was an intentional nod to the subject matter of the film and music.8.50
BTW: Jason had skated to this music back in the 2019-2020 Season, for which he wore the grey look above, with a sequined "skyline"-looking motif around the midriff. This was his costume for "Schindler's List"  then.
Mark Kondratiuk ROC Free Skate--Mark skated his Free Skate to Overture (from "Jesus Christ Superstar" rock opera) by Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Temple (from "Jesus Christ Superstar" rock opera) by Andrew Lloyd Webber during the Team as well as Men's Singles Competition, and it went VIRAL! Both for the fact that he skated to Andrew Lloyd Webber's over-the-top musical, but also because of the very Jesus Christ Superstar-y costume. His look was certainly not a subtle nod to the musical but straight-up Jesus-on-the-Cross, along with a thorn-like neckline, and "Shroud of Turin"-like white/gray top. Was it campy? Yes. Did it go with his music? Of course? So, I guess, this worked, even though it was two minutes away from a child's costume from a "Jesus Christ Superstar" musical revue.8.00
Keegan Messing Canada Short Program--Skating to Never Tear Us Apart performed by INXSNever Tear Us Apart performed by Joe Cocker, Keegan wore this streamlined costume above. I thought this was a PERFECT way to wear a costume that doesn't look like one (Hello Nathan Chen!). The design featured black pants and a supertight black top with seethrough panels framed with red binding. Besides the sleek silhouette and lack of unnecessary details, my favorite part was that "X" patterned on the side of his upper torso; was the "X" for "INXS" or just a cool design detail? Whatever the reason, the look was sleek, sexy, modern, yet still had stage appeal. 9.00

Deniss Vasiljevs Latvia Short Program--Deniss skated his Short Program to Sarakiz: II. Romanza by Karl Jenkins, performed by Marat Bisengaliev & London Symphony Orchestra, The Battle Drums by Joe Hisaishi. He wore this blue and black costume that had references to Samurai and  Medieval Warriors, with some Near East influence. I appreciated the details, including the asymmetrical body "armor", the ruched sleeves...and on a non-costume note: His ponytail was a nice accessory...he just needed some hair gel to maintain it!
8.85
Kevin Aymoz France Short Program--I could not do an Olympics Men's Figure Skating post without discussing this look from France's Kevin Aymoz. As if there is any question as to what Kevin is skating to, it's PRINCE, of course...specifically The Question Of You by Prince. Naturally, Kevin wore purple, and he wore it very well! His costume consisted of a purple top, a purple shirt with studs and silver sequin applique as well as front buckles, and gloves. I thought it was just right for the music and the subject at hand. Purple and slightly campy. 8.99
Free Skate to Outro by M 83--For his Free Skate, Kevin wore this costume above, which I liked, at least the top section. The look included your basic men's black skating pants and an ombre dyed cowl-draped stretch top in violet/purple, raspberry, and delicate green colors. I loved the pretty cowl drape neckline, which traditionally is a design detail related to female garments but here, it is obvious that it can be done for men as well; it provided wonderful top-half interest to his costume and gave his look a nice fashion edge.8.50

Last but not least:
Donovan Carrillo Mexico Short Program--Probably one of the most beloved skaters during the Beijing 2022 Olympics was Mexico's Donovan Carrillo. He was the first skater from Mexico to compete in a free skate at the Olympics, he famously trains in a mall, and he is very, very sassy when he skates (which I personally love!). Speaking of sassy...Donovan skated his Short Program to Black Magic Woman by Gregg Alan, Carlos Santana, Shake It by Carlos Santana wearing this fabulous costume. I loved the sleek look, the bold gold and silver sequined "stripes" highlighting his upper torso, and the extra chunky crystals around the shoulders...the whole outfit was perfect for him and looked as if Bob Mackie had designed it! 9.35
Free Skate to Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps (feat. Carlos Rivera) by Daniel Boaventura, Sway by Dean Martin, Maria (Spanglish Radio Edit) by Ricky Martin, and Bailar (Radio Edit) by Deorro feat. Elvis Crespo--Donovan made me happy for a second time by wearing yet another SUPERSTAR of a costume, this time for his Free Skate. The music was Muy Caliente and so was this costume: With the plunging neckline, silver sequined beadwork, and super-tight fit, he looked like he was performing a fabulous show in Vegas, and I wanted Front Row Tickets! This young man knows how to put on a Show...skating AND costume-wise! Muy Bien.9.75
Yuma, Nathan and Shoma: Congratulations to the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medalists in Men's Singles (L to R) Yuma Kagiyama of Japan, Nathan Chen of USA, and Shoma Uno of Japan--Beijing 2022 Olympics
King Nathan! Nathan Chen of USA wins Gold--Beijing 2022 Olympics

It's time for my next installment of "Project Runway" Season 19 Photo Diary BLOG...Episode 9 was the infamous "Unconventional Materials" Challenge, one of the most fan-tastic of the show. It's always super creative to see what the designers on "Project Runway" do with materials that are not your traditional fabrics, like satins, cotton, etc. For this season, the design challenge involved designing a Cocktail Dress....out of (wait for it!), actual materials found AT A BAR! (Get it: Cocktail Dress & Cocktail Bar Materials!)...

Ready...Set...Go! Designers get ready to make a run for it, at the bar--Episode 9 Unconventional Cocktail Dress, Season 19 Project Runway
The designers were brought to a bar in Long Island City, where many typical materials found at a bar, such as stirrers, straws, bottle caps, plastic take-out bags, coffee filters, doilies, bar mats + much more, were placed throughout the bar for the designers to find. The designers had 30 minutes to gather as many materials as they could and use them to create their designs...

Relax Style-- Models (L to R) Sarah Victoria, Mimi Tao, and DD Smith in designs from Kristina Kharlashkina, Octavio Aguilar, and Chasity Sereal--Episode 8 "Couch Couture", Season 19 Project Runway
Continuing with my "Project Runway" BLOG for this 19th Season of the show, it's time for my "Photo Recap" from Episode 8. The 8th episode, entitled "Couch Couture", involved designing an outfit for these post-COVID fashion times...in other words: Comfy style. Think athleisure, joggers, relaxed stay-at-home fashion but yes, more "upgraded", since after all, this is "Project Runway".
Chic PJ's--Models (L to R) DD and Sarah Victoria in designs from Chasity Sereal and Kristina Kharlashkina--Episode 8 "Couch Couture", Season 19 Project Runway
In the past 2 years since the pandemic, many people have been discussing the supposed end of Dressing Up, and the rise of "Pajama Style"...so it made perfect sense to have a challenge around this.
Nick Verreos, Geoffrey Mac, and David Paul, on the set of Season 19 "Project Runway" at the Brooklyn Navy Yard
A bonus to this challenge was that last year's winner of "Project Runway" designer Geoffrey Mac , came on the set to visit with the designers--along with the AMAZING Cyndi Lauper. PROJECT RUNWAY.....Season 19 Project Runway: Episode 7 Faux Fur Avant-Garde - Photo Recap!

Fur Fabulous--Models (L to R) Mimi Tao and Cassandra in designs by Chasity Sereal & Prajje Oscar Jean-Baptiste and Shantall Lacayo & Kristina Kharlashkina--Episode 7 Avant-garde Faux Fur, Season 19 Project Runway

For Episode 7 of Bravo's "Project Runway" Season 19, the designers were paired into design "teams" of two, to create an original Avant-garde look using Faux Fur. This was one of the most fun and creative challenges so far in the season for what it was about: Creating something fabulous in faux fur, and also since many "Project Runway" fans LOVE the Avant-garde Challenge...

Faux Animal--Fur bolts from Sorona Faux Furs--Episode 7 Avant-garde Faux Fur, Season 19 Project Runway
The wonderful company, Sorona , provided our designers with bolts and bolts of their plant-based (!) faux fur, which has been used by the likes of Stella McCartney, among others. As you can see from the photos above and below, they looked GREAT, almost real, and for the designers, was wonderful to work with (besides all the fur left on the workroom floor after all the cutting and shaving...yes, SHAVING!).
Bold Fur--Sorona Faux Furs--Episode 7 Avant-garde Faux Fur, Season 19 Project Runway
Cheetah, Lion, Tiger--Sorona Faux Furs--Episode 7 Avant-garde Faux Fur, Season 19 Project Runway
And now, time to see the creations: (L to R) Models DD, Mimi, and Grace in Avant-garde Faux Fur designs from Coral Castillo & Zayden Skipper, Chasity Sereal & Prajje Oscar Jean-Baptiste, and Octavio Aguilar & Anna Yinan Zhou--Episode 7 Avant-garde Faux Fur, Season 19 Project Runway

Our Fabulous Guest Judge was none other than... Billy Porter!!-- Episode 7 Avant-garde Faux Fur, Season 19 Project Runway
And the "What Models Do For Fashion" Award Goes To... Mimi Tao!!! Mimi--who modeled the pink fur-and-hand-painted design, ended up quite bruised from the runway...what people didn't see was that underneath the structure of the design, there was wiring, boning, and tulle creating the shape. It seems that the ends of the wiring/boning kept poking into Mimi's legs while she effortlessly did the runway walk. After Mimi finished, we had to call in the studio medic once we realized that Mimi was bleeding and in major pain from the scratches. What took it to another level was when Mimi began asking us to start taking photos right then and there with the medic! Even in pain, Mimi saw a chance for a PHOTOSHOOT!

PROJECT RUNWAY.....Season 19 Project Runway Episode 5: Tara Lapinsky and Johnny Weir...The Photo Recap!

Tara and Johnny!--Special Clients and Guest Judges for "Project Runway" Episode5, Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir--Season 19 Project Runway Episode 5

For the 5th Episode of Bravo's "Project Runway" Season 19, we had two VERY SPECIAL guests on the set: Figure Skating Royalty, Tara Lipinski, and Johnny Weir! While we filmed the season (and episode) during the height of Summer 2021, we knew that this would air around the time the Beijing 2022 Olympics media blitz would be beginning (this past Fall).

Season 19 Project Runway Episode 5
As part of network collab (NBC airs the Olympics, and Bravo Network is part of the NBC/Universal family), the "powers at be" decided to have one of our Design Challenges for this season involve the Olympics somehow...and naturally, why not have our season's designers create outfits for (Drum roll!) Olympic champion Tara Lipinski and 2-time Olympian Johnny Weir! Y'all may know that I am a BIG figure skating fan and love blogging about figure skating costumes right here on my "Ice Style" blogs. And if you are a TRUE "Project Runway" fan, you might remember when I was on, back in Season 2, we had the challenge to design a skating costume for Sasha Cohen and I was literally, the only one who knew who she was and naturally, acted like a silly fanboy! So...when I found out that Tara Lipinski AND Johnny Weir would be on our set, I DIED!
OMG, It's Johnny and Tara!--Nick Verreos with Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir--Season 19 Project Runway Episode 5
Even though I was trying to remain as professional as I could be (not much!) as a Consulting Producer for the show, I could not contain my excitement when they walked on the set. I had to say "hello" like a silly SUPERFAN (I am sure they had no clue of who I was, what I did for the show, and more importantly why I was freaking out!). After the requisite "Can I get a selfie with you guys?", it was time for them to get to work...
"We Need Looks!"--Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir announce the Challenge for this week--Season 19 Project Runway Episode 5
This week's episode - and Challenge - was to design an outfit for both Tara and Johnny to wear for their ON AIR commentary/appearance during the Beijing 2022 Olympics. If you follow figure skating, whenever they do their skating commentary, both Tara and Johnny are obviously known for their insightful expertise, witty thoughts on skating, and also, their fashion--especially Johnny!
Here are my Behind-The-Scenes Photos from filming the Episode:

PROJECT RUNWAY.....Season 19 Project Runway: Episode 4 "Flower Power" The Photo Recap!

Flower Boy--Nick Verreos posing with flower arrangements by Lewis Miller, especially done for Bravo's "Project Runway"--Episode 4 "Flower Power" Project Runway
In the 4th episode of this season's "Project Runway", the Challenge involved FLOWERS and more specifically, flower prints. Since flower prints are always a big trend, especially for Spring/Summer fashion, this was a nice way to incorporate it as a design challenge...

Flower Runway Stage--Episode 4 "Flower Power" Project Runway
The show recruited the fabulous Lewis Miller, of Lewis Miller Design , known as the "Banksy of Flower Design" for this very special episode to introduce the challenge, along with judge Elaine Welteroth. Miller is known for "flower bombs"/"flower flash" that in the past several years have appeared seemingly out of nowhere gracing the streets, subway exits, and even trash containers, around NYC.
Lewis Miller and Elaine Welteroth--Episode 4 "Flower Power" Project Runway
The morning of the episode introduction day, Miller and his team, created several "flower bombs", in our "Project Runway" workroom as well as outside areas in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the site of our filming location.
Wet Flowers--Episode 4 "Flower Power" Project Runway
Unfortunately (for the beautiful outside flower displays), it was a morning of THUNDEROUS DOWNPOUR of RAIN, which made the outside flower bombs look, more "bomb'y", less flowery (photo above). Fortunately, none of the "flower bombs" indoors were affected, so the workroom looked quite pretty. Afterward, many of us (the producers) took some of the flowers back to our Airbnb's/Apartments to make them look a little more "decorated" :)

The "Project Runway" Workroom--Episode 4 "Flower Power" Project Runway
To make this "Flower Power" design challenge more exciting and bespoke, the designers got to create/design their own CUSTOM PRINT, that they would use as the main fabric in their design. We were fortunate to utilize the services of In Vogue Studios , a fabric printing service located in Manhattan. We bought different types of white fabric, in a Twill, a Knit, a Satin, and Mikado, and the designers designed and created their own prints that would then be printed onto the original "base" fabrics.Check out the prints, as they came in from In Vogue Studios:

PROJECT RUNWAY.....Season 19 Project Runway: Episode 3 Halloween Chic...The Photo Recap!

Masquerade Couture--Models in "Spooky Couture"-inspired designs from Episode 3 "Halloween" Episode Season 19 Project Runway
In the third episode of Season 19 "Project Runway" , the Theme was HALLOWEEN ! We filmed the season (and episode) over the Summer but we knew it was scheduled to air during Halloween so...we thought it would be fun to give the designers a Challenge inspired by "Spooky Couture"; NO Halloween costumes but more Alexander McQueen-esque Spooky Masquerade Ball-like. Many designers are inspired (such as McQueen) by more Goth/Dark/Haunted themes and so this design challenge seemed perfectly timed for Halloween...

Crystal Skull--A "spooky" accessory from the "Project Runway" Accessories Wall--Episode 3 "Halloween" Episode Season 19 Project Runway
Before the filming of the episode started, I was tasked to check out the "Hai Trim & Feathers" store in the NYC Garment District, to buy "A BUNCH" of trims that I thought the designers would want at their disposal for the Challenge, as well as to help in creating a Mask and/or Accessory to go along with their look...

In the second Episode of Season 19 "Project Runway" , the Challenge was to design a STREETWEAR look. As we all know, Streetwear is a thriving and very important part of our fashion landscape with so many designers and brands being influenced by it. One can see the influence of Streetwear especially on high-end brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Versace to name but a few. As a result, naturally, it was an important design style that we wanted this season's designers to tackle. Here are Behind-the-Scenes photos I took--as one of my many "unofficial duties" as Consulting Producer for the show--during the filming of this episode:

Designs-in-Progress Workroom Photos:At the end of the first workroom day, we walked around to see the progress of each of the designers and I got the chance to snap photos, mainly so we (the producers) can see where they are at...but also to post in blogs like this! It's interesting since the following day, before the runway, things may change and so what you see here may be "a little different" than the final Runway outcome... PROJECT RUNWAY.....Season 19 Project Runway: Episode 1 "A Colorful Return" Photo Recap

Colorful and Fabulous--Models (L to R) Grace, Roberta, and Marsha wearing designs from Season 19 Project Runway designers Bones Jones, Kenneth Barlis, and Octavio Aguilar; model Dariana as the "Project Runway Color Wheel" Model--Lincoln Center NYC

Last Summer, I was fortunate (along with my work and life partner David Paul) to be asked once again to be Consulting Producers on Bravo's "Project Runway" for Season 19. As an Alumn of the show (Season 2, as well as the spinoff "Under The Gunn"), it has also been my pleasure for the last two seasons since the show returned back to the Bravo Network, to be brought in as a Consulting Producer. As such, David and I help in the casting process of the designers who get to be on the show, as well as work during production, helping with all things fashion-related--from the equipment (which machines, what thread, pattern papers, etc) to consulting on how much time is needed for each challenge, and so much more.

Nick Verreos--During the filming of the 1st Episode introduction at Lincoln Center, NYC

This new season was the first completely filmed using COVID protocols (masks and face shields for us, twice-weekly tests, temperature checks plus lots and lots of sanitizers!). While all of that was a challenge on its own, it was exciting to get back to filming and the show. The first design challenge involved "A Return to NYC" and a theme of COLOR! The designers were challenged to take a color from the Color Wheel and design a look that best represents their own design aesthetic using COLOR. Since bold color has been a big theme utilized by designers as of late, we thought it was a great way to start the season!

Here are photos I took during the filming of this very first Season premiere Episode from Season 19 "Project Runway"...Enjoy

Mentor and Judges at Lincoln Center--(L to R) Christian Siriano, Nina Garcia, Brandon Maxwell, and Elaine Welteroth
The introduction of the Challenge was done at The Green , a participatory public art installation designed by Mimi Lien that was open during this past Summer located in front of Lincoln Center. We had to get there before it opened to the public so we filmed very early in the morning.
Standing by for "Action!"--(L to R) Christian Siriano, Nina Garcia, Brandon Maxwell and Elaine Welteroth--The Green at Lincoln Center NYC
Needless to say, by 8 AM, a throng of looky-loos began appearing trying to snap photos and asking what was going on. Some recognized Christian and/or Nina and quickly figured it all out and immediately began posting Insta-stories and photos of the scene; the "cat was out of the bag".
Mood Nick--Nick Verreos at Mood Fabrics NYC
The week before the filming of the episode even began, one of my duties as Consulting Producer was to go to MOOD Fabrics , to make sure they had enough color choices in different types of fabric so the designers would have enough to work from (they did!).
Sketch & Real Life--On the left is my quick sketch of the dresses that we had made for the season premiere of Season 19 "Project Runway" by Season 18 "Project Runway" designer Marquise Foster (with the help of fellow Season 18 designer Shavi Lewis)
Also before filming began, as part of pre-production duties, the producers decided that it would be great to have all of our models at Lincoln Center for the Season Premiere Introduction, wearing the same dress style but in different sizes, and different colors...SIXTEEN different colors:

Color Slip Dresses--Marquise cut and sewed the dresses with less than a week of notice (OMG!!) We never saw the dresses until THE MORNING of the filming!!! After a few adjustments and "make it work!" alterations...it was "SHOWTIME!"
Here are the dresses--and models--as they appeared on the show!  A Colorful Premiere--Models in multicolored silk slip dresses--Season 19 Premiere of Bravo's "Project Runway"--The Green at Lincoln Center
