What a difficult question! I honestly don't know how to abandon an interest -- it seems a bit like cutting off your hands and then pretending you never had them. That said, if somehow one of my interests and activities were torn away from me, to imagine what I would least long for, or least regret, I'd have to say it would be my engagement in technology. Which would be unfortunate, since that's paying the rent for the other fractional bits of my mind which are writing poems and stories, baking pies and crafting recipes, playing music, delving into politics and history and language, and generally doing things that these days almost by definition *don't* pay the (ever-more exorbitant) San Francisco rent!

Oh -- and I am supremely delighted that you enjoyed the pies. We aim to make people happy with the baking, and it sounds like the goal was achieved. Thank you!(less)

The kernels of what stories I wind up telling come from the daily events I see, and hear about, and read about, and take part in as part of my life. That's the abstract part though: the practical mechanics of sitting down and writing --- that requires a little inspiration as well. Usually in the form of a neurotic and overwhelming demand to act productive.

Oh, and removing all entertaining distractions from the room other than a keyboard also helps.(less)

In Praise of Independent Small Bookstores

from the New York Times today, courtesy of Molly Wood:
People here have thought for centuries about what makes a book industry vibrant, and are watching developments in Britain and America as cautionary tales. “We don’t sell potatoes,” says Mr. Moni. “There are also ideas in books. That’s what’s dangerous. Because the day that you have a large seller that sells 80 percent of books, he’s the one who

“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”

Stephen Chbosky
“It's just that I don't want to be somebody's crush. If somebody likes me, I want them to like the real me, not what they think I am. And I don't want them to carry it around inside. I want them to show me, so I can feel it too.”
Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Claude Lévi-Strauss
“We are right to be rational and to try to increase our production and so keep manufacturing costs down. But we are also right to cherish those very imperfections we are endeavouring to eliminate. Social life consists in destroying that which gives it its savour.”
