More details on the Deluxe, Collector's Edition of Fate of Wizardoms!

 I am so pumped for this limited, deluxe, collector's edition of my bestselling Fate of Wizardoms series. 

The books will feature foil stamped art and typography on a faux leather hardcover exterior. The interior begins with a full color world map and custom illustration and continues with black and white illustrations from the original individual covers along with hand drawn character illustrations commissioned specifically for this project. Character are vital to me and my storytelling, so I am thrilled to have those characters jumping off the pages in a way they never have before now. 

Additional features such as sprayed page edges and a slipcase to lovingly cradle the books together are among early stretch goals.

I Am Among The Top 10 Authors To Look Out For In 2023

I was recently included in an article on LA Weekly Magazine, listing the top authors to follow in 2023. With 25 novels released (as of March 15) and many more on the way, my author journey has just begun. The article is included below.

Fantasy books can transport readers into a magical, make-believe land with compelling, larger-than-life characters and intricate plots. There is a certain complexity involved in creating fantasy literature – hence why everyone isn’t capable of mastering this genre. Jeffrey L Kohanek is an epic fantasy writer who has connected with his readers based solely on his incredible plots and uniquely inclusive characters, with plenty of action and emotional charge on the side. He has penned dozens of fantasy books, including numerous acclaimed series set within his world of Wizardoms.

Kohanek enjoyed comic books during his childhood, where superheroes save the day by annihilating evil with their superpowers. As he grew older, he consumed fantasy literature, falling in love with the wondrous places intertwined with myth and magic. However, he chose a more traditional career path, studying engineering, working in Product Management, raising two gorgeous children, and living his life while his creative desire grew stronger.

Kohanek decided to act on his dream and started writing as a side hobby in 2016, finally leaving his job in January 2020 with ten published novels. His books are fast-paced and action-packed, with well-rounded characters and gripping plots with cinematic quality. They are a perfect read for an audience who enjoys intricate world-building, the classic good vs. evil trope, and lively characters with a dash of romance.

Currently, Kohanek has 25 published novels, with more on the way. He actively connects with readers through his storytelling, social media, and bi-weekly newsletters featuring exclusive deals and content based on his books. To guide readers, I have created the recommended reading order chart below. Keep in mind that while the events in Fate of Wizardoms proceed those in Fall of Wizardoms, both series can be enjoyed independently and readers CAN choose to read them in either order.

Fate of Wizardoms Inspiration Post #4: Gods and Wizard Lords

This is my final Wizardoms “Inspiration” post. You may have noticed I avoided posting about plot. I prefer to leave that arena dark until you embark on your journey. I abhor spoilers and would hate to ruin the surprises. Now, on to the post.From the onset, I wanted gods, or the power of gods, to have a heavy hand in this world. Akin to books like The Belgariad (great series), these gods do not walk among us but they do connect with society in a meaningful way by gifting wizard lords with extraordinary abilities. Once a god anoints a wizard lord, the wizard becomes close to immortal, able to wield far more magic than a typical wizard while also possessing the ability to instantly heal themselves. Cut them with a poison blade, they will seal the wound and burn the poison from their blood in an instant. In addition, this magic extends their life, some surviving for as long as three centuries. Wizard lords derive this power through the prayers of their people, each society forced to participate in an act of Devotion every evening. How does this work? The capital city of each wizardom contains a Tower of Devotion. A persistent fire burns at the top of these towers, a fire of light created by a crystal throne. When the wizard lord sits upon that throne and embraces his magic, the fire becomes a blazing inferno and beams of light shoot out toward the other cities in the wizardom, each of which contains an obelisk with a similar fire. These pylons of light collect the prayers and draw them into the wizard lord. The rub, these rulers are essentially trapped in their own city, reluctant to even miss one day of Devotion should they stray too far from the tower. Each wizardom had a unique god but these gods, the gods of man, are not the original gods of the world. In the beginning, there were two other gods, the gods of old, brothers known as Vandasal and Urvadan. There is a tale told of these two gods in my first Wizardoms book, describing the legend of the gods. While time has all but erased knowledge of the old gods from history, time mean little to a god, particularly when said god is also known as the Dark Lord. I would say more, but it is best told in the pages of my books.

Fate of Wizardoms Inspiration #3: Magic Systems

I am enthralled with magic, both mystical and defined. My love for “super human abilities” began with Marvel comics when I was five years old, and magic is an extension of that love affair. Those who have read my Issalia books might see the connection between the uses for magic and what you would find in a Marvel movie.In the Wizardoms world, there are various types of magic. This post will focus on wizardly magic.

Wizards are the ruling class, those born with a natural ability to harness magic fall into this category, their very blood sparkling with the unique metals that enable this gift. Conversely, the rest of the population is simply known as “ungifted”.Going back to Marvel, Doctor Strange was an influence to the magic wizards utilize. A wizard gathers latent energy, converting it to magic, and use a slice of it is used to form a construct around their hand(see the image above). Each construct is a unique pattern that will yield a specific result. The wizard funnels the remainder of the gathered magic through the construct and the spell is cast. Think of it like aiming a bright light through a lens, filtering the light into another shape or color. A heat construct with enough magic channeled through it turns to a spout of flames. Another heat construct could form a fireball.While wizards have a natural ability, they must train to memorize these constructs, perfecting the patterns, learning how to use or combine these spells, and comprehending the consequences of each execution. A poorly formed construct can yield disastrous results. Over extending yourself or holding the magic too long can burn out the user, igniting the metal in their own blood.There is also a far more mystical type of magic, used by the Seers of Kelmar. Others call those women witches, scorning and distrusting them. In addition, creatures born of magic, such as dwarfs, elves, dragons, and other monsters, have intrinsic magical abilities depending on their nature. For instance, one dwarf might be a stone-shaper, able to use inherent abilities to bend stone to their will, shaping it with their bare hands (one of my main characters has this ability). Lastly, there are sorcerers - those who use blood magic, also called black magic.The magic does not end there and some of it, I will not expose lest it spoil the surprise.

Fate of Wizardoms Inspiration Post #2

WORLDBUILDING

This is a big subject for Epic Fantasy, and like most of my favorites, this world began with a map. My love affair with fantasy maps has gone on for ~35 years. I enjoy maps, the terrain, weather, and how it affects the story. I sketched out a map as I built my world (later paid a pro to make it pretty). Before I had a plot, I knew I wanted the world to have a long history and one where magical beings such as dwarfs, elves, dragons, and others were legendary. Having been absent from the world for 2,000 years, the general populace believes them nothing more than myth. This would enable a sense of wonder and discovery when these beings return.The lands to the distant east are split from the wizardoms by impossibly high peaks, too high to breath even in the saddles. The only means to reach these lands is to circle around through the frigid tundra to the south or to journey through the chasms known as The Fractured Lands: The battlefield between mankind and darkspawn from the Murlands. I also wanted this series to explore many of the most classic epic fantasy tropes, turning some on their head while explaining others in a new manner. A simple one was to set the continent in the southern hemisphere with a hot, desert land in the north, ice fields in the south. Much of the middle ground is around a sea that is very much like the Mediterranean, climates moderate throughout the year.Each wizardom has its own culture, some more exotic than others. The capital cities are ancient, built by a long lost race known only as the Makers. Each of those cities has a structure called the Tower of Devotion while the smaller cities each have an obelisk used for the same purpose. These are critical elements to both the plot and the magic system of the world.

Expect posts detailing the primary magic system and the gods of this world very soon. Both have an significant impact on the story itself.

Wizardoms Inspiration #1

This is the first in a series of four blog posts I plan to share regarding what inspired FATE OF WIZARDOMS. Enjoy.

What inspired this book? It's a common question for authors: While we can toss out easy answers, the truth is often more complicated because there are so many elements to a book or series (characters, plot, worldbuilding, politics, themes, religion, magic system...). This post will focus on characters, which I feel is the most important aspect to any good story.______________________________Jerrell "Jace" Landish: I list Jace first because he is the central character, which isn't easy because he is not a fierce warrior or powerful magic user. Instead, he was inspired by the likes of Mat Cauthon, Locke Lamora, and Kaz Brekker. He is clever, arrogant, and a complete rogue. As a thief for hire, his exploits have become legendary, forcing him to use alternative names or face fierce distrust from others. His sharp tongue and flamboyant nature make him a blast to write. Yes, he is a scoundrel, especially in the first book, but he has a core of loyal integrity beneath his self-centered exterior. He is pictured in the art above.Rhoa Sulikani: In nature, Rhoa is similar Lyra, to the main character from my book, Rogue Legacy. She is fierce, brave, and determined. When she was nine years old, her parents were taken from her, a tragic event that molds her personality and motivations. I wrote her in as an acrobat as a plot tool, partially driven by the opening scene of the book, and because I wanted to include a menagerie (circus) as a unique element of the world. She is similar to Inej from Six of Crows in many ways (I was nearly finished writing Eye of Obscurance when I read Six of Crows). Rhoa is pictured on the art above, wielding her unique fulgur blades.Narine Killarius: As a princess and wizardess, Narine grew up in a different reality, pampered in every way...until you realize neither her father nor brother offer an ounce of affection(her mother died when she was a toddler). Although beautiful and curvy, she envies her bodyguard, Adyn for her lean frame and athletic prowess - classic "grass is always greener". Narine really gets a chance to shine in the second book of the series and beyond, joining Jace as a true "central character". In fact, by the middle of book three, I have a total crush on Narine, and I am the author! She is a sort of conglomeration of numerous women from Wheel of Time, combining the aspects I liked best from Egwene, Elayne, and Nynaeve. You can find her pictured on the cover of the second book in the series, Wizardoms: Balance of Magic.Rawkobon Kragmor: Rawk is a dwarf of a different sort. Unlike his brethren, who take great pride in their beards, Rawk is hairless and has been treated as an outcast his entire life. When Rawk violates a sacred law of his people, he is cast out of his mountain home. Shy and reserved(very undwarf-like), Rawk is loyal to a fault to those he cares for. Also, he can do a special type of magic and his unique abilities become critical tools at opportune times. I very intentionally make Rawk a non-standard dwarf and needed a character who just didn't fit in his society._______________________________There are other characters, including scheming antagonists, power-hungry wizards, a world-traveling storyteller, additional dwarfs, seers, and many others. I also add new POV characters as the series progresses, including a jaded ex soldier who is drawn into the main quest (you may know him from my prequel novella, Legend of Shadowmar).One final note: I happen to love dialogue, particularly banter. The interactions between these characters is among my favorite elements of the series, and it only gets better as they spend more time together.

Issalia Books Reading Order

When I began writing the Runes of Issalia series, I had a firm grasp of the story and knew from the start that it would result in a three-book series. What I never counted on were the stories that would come later, all set in the same world. This resulted in eight full-length novels and a novella with multiple entry points for new readers to consider. At the same time, these choices create confusion for readers who wish to experience the full saga of Issalia.

Where should I begin? readers ask me. Honestly, The Buried Symbol, Rogue Legacy, A Warden's Purpose, and ICON are all potential options, but if you intend to read them all and desire the best reader experience, begin with The Buried Symbol and then follow the chart below. Even then, if you have questions, feel free to reach out to me. I love to engage with readers and there is nothing I enjoy discussing more than the stories and characters I have created.

As an update regarding upcoming books, I recently finished writing the final entry in the Wardens of Issalia series. A Kingdom Under Siege is set to release in May, but eBook readers can enjoy the story early by purchasing the Wardens of Issalia Boxed Set, which will include all four books at a special, limited-time price when it releases on April 4th, 2019.
