VI – D-DAY
7 DAYS LATER….
G walked out onto the patio of the Miami Beach house she had been borrowing from Jayce’s parents. The warm weather and perfect breeze was more than what she asked for. She felt like she was finally free from everything that was holding her down. She picked up the phone and called Jayce. He answered on the second ring.
“Good morning, beautiful” he said.
“I just want to thank you again for helping me out of this situation” she said.
“Don’t sweat it, sis. You know I always got your back” Jayce said.
There was a long pause. ” I wonder how Chance is doing” G said.
“From what I understand, he was still looking for you, G. I’m not sure if he plans on stopping either. Do you know what your plans are after my parents’ beach house?”
“Right now, no. I just know that I can’t come back there. There’s nothing left for me there” G said reluctantly.
G still felt something for Chance, despite everything they had been through, but she knew that leaving was the best thing she could do to get away from him. They had become bad for each other, and there was nothing more that could be done to mend their relationship. She knew that the decision she made was the best one for now. As she continued to drift off into her thoughts, Jayce interrupts them with a question, “so when will I see my best friend again?”
“I’m not sure, Jay. I don’t know when it’ll be safe for me to come back home. But maybe one day you can come see me” G said.
“It’s a date, G” he said. G could hear in his voice that he missed her, but he wouldn’t bring himself to admit it. Both Jayce and G knew what emotions were there, but knew that now was not the time to act on them. There was already too much history between them.
G hung up the phone and exhaled slowly. She looked out at the calm water, deep in her thoughts. She felt a tear creep away from her eye and she quickly wiped it away; even while she was alone, she didn’t want to show any weakness. Now that she was in a new city, it was time to start a new life.
“Time to start over.”

Meanwhile, at Chances’s house
Chance took two hard blows to his rib cage. A long and agonizing groan crept out of his mouth. For the last hour, he had been Mr. Ray’s punching bag, as he sat in a chair in his basement. Mr. Ray had made his way into his home with three of his own goons, since he was unable to keep his promise and find G. Chance knew this day was coming; and as much as he tried to avoid Mr. Ray and his punishment, he knew eventually the ass whooping he dreaded was inevitable. Mr. Ray wasted no time as he motioned for his boys to jack Chance up, and lead him down to the basement. Even with Mo by his side, it was two against four, and they were no match for their opponents.
Chance looked up at the ceiling, through blood and sweat, praying for it all to end; and for Mr. Ray to finally just put him out of his misery. He began to regret the day he ever laid eyes on G and get tied up into this lifestyle.
“Please….please….” Chance begged, but his cries went unnoticed.
“You had ample time young man. Ample time to find that bitch and set things straight with me. I mean, how hard could it have been? She smarter than you or something? You can’t control your own women; you let a ho outsmart you, Chance?” Mr. Ray said in a condescending tone. He removed his rings; the ones that were making imprints on Chance’s face, and took the brass knuckles off the table next to him.
“Now, where’s my money, since you can’t hold up your end of this business deal?”
Chance motioned for Mo to bring over the briefcase that held all $500,000 that Mr. Ray originally gave to Chance. Mo provided Mr. Ray with the briefcase, and Mr. Ray extended his hand.
“Thank you, sir. I apologize that you have to see your boss like this; but business is business.”
Mo nodded and walked out of the room.
Mr. Ray took a step over to Chance, who had now fallen onto the floor, and begging Mr. Ray to call it even and let him go, “Please Mr. Ray, can we just let this all go?”
“Hell no, youngblood. This is how you pay for crossing Mr. Ray. I hope that bitch was worth every lick” he said.
That was the last thing Chance remembered before everything went black.

#XD30 – 14
Jayce woke up to a hard banging at his door; like the police were about to bust through. He rolled over in his bed and looked at the clock and it said 6:45am.
“Who the hell is at my door?” He said to himself.
He got out of bed and pulled on a T-shirt and some sweatpants. He walked to his door and looked through the peephole and saw a large man outside. He was hesitant about opening the door at first, wondering who it could be. He decided that he would, hoping maybe it was just some misunderstanding.
As soon as Jayce opened the door, two large gentleman busted through his home.
“Where the fuck is G, lil’ nigga?!” One man said.
“What? What are you talking about?!”
The other smaller gentleman walked up to Jayce and jacked him up against the wall by the front door, “we know G has been over here. Chance told us. Now we know she hiding out in here, and when we find her we have orders to take her and whoop your ass” he said with a grin that indicated that he’d been waiting to cause bodily harm to someone.
Jayce looked at them stunned, “fellas, I don’t know what you’re talking about, but G isn’t here. I haven’t seen her in days!”
The security guard holding Jayce punched him in the stomach, “bitch, don’t lie to me! Mo, tear this place apart! I bet her ass is here!”
No begins to ransack Jayce’s apartment, searching furiously for G. They both know this is the last resort before Chance has to answer to Mr. Ray. While Mo is looking through every inch of Jayce’s place, Jayce is struggling to get free and get questions answered.
“Fellas, if we could just sit down and talk I’m sure we can maybe put our heads together and solve this. I swear I haven’t talked to G in a couple days. She told me she was good, but didn’t say where she was. I’m beginning to worry actually.”
“Man, shut the hell up” the man said.
Minutes later, Mo comes back towards the front of the apartment empty handed.
“She’s not here; there’s no sign of her” he said.
“Shit. What are we gonna tell Boss Man?”
Mo shrugs his shoulders, “shit I don’t know. But I know I’ve looked and she ain’t here.”
The man holding Jayce loosens his grip, but doesn’t step away. He gets real close and makes eye contact, “if we come back and find out G is here, your ass is ours, punk.”
“Yea. Whatever; like I said, she ain’t here and she hasn’t been here. If you want, tell Chance I’m done with G anyway! She’s nothing but a lying bitch in my eyes!”
Mo and his partner gather themselves and leave the residence. Jayce breathes a sigh of relief, as he surely thought these men would kill him in his own home.
He walks over to his living room and sits on the couch and pulls his phone out of his pocket. He sends a text:
“Hes still looking. You’re better off where you are for a while.”
He put his phone down and turned on the TV. A few seconds later, he got a text back:
“Thanks for always having my back. Love you, Jay.”
“Love you too, G. Stay safe, love.”

“Hello?”
“Where are you, child?”
“Mama?”
“Giselle! Where are you? I haven’t seen or heard from you in days! Are you alright?”
“I’m fine, mama. I had to go away for a while. I’m on a vacation. I’ll be back in a couple of weeks though, promise.”
“Wait, where are you?”
” I can’t tell you that. Just know I’m alright, ok?”
“Ok. I’m praying for you, baby.”
“Thanks mama. I’ll take all I can get.”

V – COUNTDOWN
FOUR DAYS LATER….
“Yo boss, we still haven’t found her. I’ve been trying to trace her calls, sneaking by her place and everything. She’s gone missing or something. What you want me to do next?” Mo, Chance’s head of security said. He had been on detail finding G for the past three days.
Chance took a sip of his drink, then slammed the drink down on the table, nearly breaking the glass, “Why is it so hard for y’all to find one bitch?!”
One security guard spoke up, “we’ve been trying everywhere you told us, boss. I don’t know where else you think we can look. She don’t have any other family members, friends?….”
Just when he said that, it clicked. Chance was so caught up in his own paranoia, he forgot to tell them to check with the one person who knew her better than anyone else.
“I know exactly where she’s been hiding” Chance said.
Chance scribbled an address on a piece of paper, gave it to Mo, and then he said, “go find her, and bring her back to this club.”
The men filed out of his office to continue to search for G. Chance sat back in his chair and took another sip of his drink.
“You can’t hide up under him for long, G” he whispered.

#XD30 – 11
G listened to the voicemail with tears in her eyes; frightened and unsure of what to do next. She had played it over and over in shock of the venom in Chance’s voice.
“WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU?! CALL ME BACK RIGHT NOW, G! DON’T PLAY WITH ME, BITCH!”
She couldn’t contact him, not when he was this upset. She knew that he had people looking for her, because her mother had called asking about some strange men coming and asking if she was at the house and asking about how often she was at home. G then knew that the heat was on her and she couldn’t go home.
She didn’t know how to explain to Jayce what kind of trouble she had gotten herself into, but it didn’t take much for him to know that she needed a place to crash. He allowed her to stay there for the entire week, since his girlfriend wouldn’t be there. G figured that would give her enough time to get things in order and decide what her next move will be.
That morning, after G listened to the voicemail, she couldn’t stop the tears from flowing. Jayce was coming downstairs to make breakfast, so she quickly fixed her face so he wouldn’t notice her tears.
“Morning, G” he said pleasantly.
“Morning” she replied.
“Anything special you want on the menu today?”
“Nothing really. Whatever you cook is fine.”
“Perfect. One chef’s special breakfast coming up! Just like in college” Jayce said. That put a smile on G’s face; which was his goal. He knew there was a lot that G was going through, but he just wanted to make sure she was ok.
As Jayce was cooking, G stared off into space, as if to be in deep thought. She then looked at Jayce and asked, “Jay, do your parents still have that beach house in Miami?”
“Yea why?”
“Do you think they would let me borrow it? I need to get away for a couple weeks” G said. Jayce turned around and gave her a concerning look.
“G, is this really that serious? What did you do the other night? Why did you leave the club?”
G wasn’t sure if she was ready to tell him that she walked out on Chance in the middle of a dance; something that could have possibly cost him a hell of a lot of money. Jayce already wasn’t the biggest fan of G’s choice of work at the time.
“I just got into a big fight with Chance that night, Jayce. I needed to get out and we’re not doing too good. Things have gotten way too crazy between us and he’s not the person I used to know. I just really need a couple weeks away to clear my head” G said.
“Ok, G. I’ll talk to my parents and see. Shouldn’t be a problem though” he said.
The remainder of breakfast was pretty quiet; neither one of them really wanted to say any more. Jayce got up and got ready for work, and G stayed at his place for the day. While she was there, she did several calculations, research and called around to some locations to gather some information since she would hopefully be in Miami for a little while.
Later that day, Jayce called G before he left work and told her that his parents said it was ok for her to stay at the beach house. “Perfect” she thought.
Now there was only one more favor she needed from Jayce.
“Jayce, I’m going to need some clothes from my place” G said.
“Cool. When do you want to get them?”
“In the middle of the night, because Chance has people looking for me.”

IV -TROUBLE
2 days later
“WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU?! CALL ME BACK RIGHT NOW, G! DON’T PLAY WITH ME, BITCH!”
Chance slammed the phone down on desk, nearly cracking the screen. Chance had no idea where G had gone, and he was sick of the games. He was ready to be done with this, and once he finally found G, he couldn’t begin to think of what he was going to do.
The night she went missing, all hell broke loose. The man who paid for G that night, Mr. Ray, came busting out of the Velvet Room yelling his name, heated about what had just went down.
“Chance, where the hell you at?”
He was causing such a scene, a couple girls peeked their heads out of their VIP rooms to see what was going on. Just then, Chance came rushing up the hallway, and suddenly, the doors quickly closed and the girls went back to tending to their clients.
“What’s up man, what’s the problem?” Chance said, confused.
“You’re ‘top-dollar’ girl, who was supposed to show me a good time just ran out on me. What the hell is that about man? We had a deal, and I held up my end; and now you pull some shit like this?! I should lay your ass out in this hallway right now” he said.
Chance started sweating bullets. He had to think on his feet, “Ok hold on a second, Mr. Ray. I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m sure this is a misunderstanding and she just went to the bathroom or something.”
“She’s been gone for over 30 minutes. Now I know you know i’m not stupid, and I don’t know what game you’re running up in here, but I know you better refund my money and I don’t even wanna hear about anymore business wit your ass” Mr. Ray said.
Mr. Ray and Chance had a private business deal going on outside of the club, and needed his money as a startup. He didn’t tell G that she used him as a part of the deal, but he was desperate, and when Mr. Ray saw G at the club and mentioned that she would be a good woman to have in his life when he was “looking to take the edge off.” Chance was not comfortable in using his girlfriend as a side chick, but with the amount of money and product Mr. Ray could bring his way, he was in a position where he couldn’t say no. The night G left, was supposed to be the first night of many, that Chance and Mr. Ray would share G in order for Chance to have a piece of the lifestyle that he wanted.
Knowing G pulled a stunt like this only enraged Chance. Not only did he make him look stupid, but she just made him miss out on the opportunity to get in the business of a lifetime making more money than they could have ever been able to spend in a lifetime. He didn’t know what had gotten into her, but he knew when he found her, there would be hell to pay.
“I’ll handle this, Mr. Ray. I can have plenty other women in place of G that can satisfy you in the meantime, but I definitely need to handle this situation” Chance pleaded. He wanted Mr. Ray to not back out of his end, until he could find G and figure out what the hell her problem was.
Mr. Ray stared long and hard at Chance, “you lucky I’m older than I used to be lil’ boy, otherwise, I woulda killed you by now for fuckin’ with my money. You better find that bitch in a week or I’m pulling my money and I’m sending some people over to teach you a lesson” Mr. Ray said. He turned around and exited the building.
Once Mr. Ray walked out of the building, Chance stormed back to his office and called a phone number, “I need the team in here, NOW!”
Chance’s security team filed into the room. They stood at the front of his desk awaiting his command.
“Find G, and bring that bitch here IMMEDIATELY!”
~~~~~~~
It had been 2 days since G went missing and Chance was wracking his brain on where she could have been. He had the security team stake out her apartment, her mother’s house, and anywhere else she could have been and she is nowhere to be found. It’s like she dropped off the face of the earth. He only had five days left to find her, and he was beginning to worry about his own safety if he couldn’t produce her to Mr. Ray.
Chance had been frantically calling G since that night and he kept getting her voicemail. When her voicemail was full, he began sending her text messages. He knew she was around, because he could at least see she was reading the messages, but refusing to respond. That only made Chance more pissed off. He began to threaten G, which was something he didn’t want to do, but was left with no other choice. He knew that she was playing games now, and that as soon as she could be found, there would be trouble.
III – A ROAD NOT TRAVELED
It was days like this that G kicked herself for choosing Chance. Nights like this, when she looked aimlessly into the night for answers and got nothing. When she wasn’t with him, she wondered how he was doing with her; and how life would have been if she would have been the one Jayce came home to every night, instead of Michelle.
Jayce and Giselle have been close friends for about five years now. They had known each other from their old neighborhood, and found out that they were going to attend the same college. They immediately linked up and became close ever since. Jayce was the sweetest person that G had ever known. She wasn’t one to cling to just one person and she didn’t keep many friends, so having Jayce through college was a good thing for G.
After they had graduated, they stayed in the area; Jayce had a pretty good job offer for a marketing firm, while G had decided to go to graduate school. They were living together at the time, so they could save money. The more time they spent together, the closer they became. G could feel the emotions beginning to creep in for Jayce, but she didn’t know if she was ready to take it there or not. She knew Jayce was the total package, and literally everything she wanted in a man, but she was caught between gaining a lover and losing her best friend.
One day, the moment she dreaded came. They were having their traditional Friday night movie night, when Jayce asked her the question she had been praying to avoid this entire time,
“Have you ever thought about me being more than just a friend, G?”
G felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up, “what do you mean, Jay?”
“Well, I know you’re not blind to the chemistry, G. I’ve been feeling it lately, and I figured instead of me sitting here wrecking my brain about it everyday, I might as well just ask you about it” he said.
G took a nervous sip of her drink. She was searching for the words to say, but nothing was coming out of her mouth. She knew the awkward pause would crush him, but she just couldn’t get the words out in time. She knew she wanted to see what things would be like with him, but she was so unsure. Before G could open her mouth to finally get her thoughts together, Jayce cut her off.
“Nevermind, G. It was a crazy thing of me to think of” he said, laughing it off; trying to keep as much of his pride in tact.
“Jay, I didn’t….”
“I know, G. It’s cool. It’s sort of a weird spot to be in. Truthfully, I wouldn’t know what to do with those feelings either. All I know is, I wouldn’t want to lose you as a friend” he said.
G gave him a half smile and they continued to watch the movie. A few weeks had passed and Jayce had moved on as if they never had the conversation. He later introduced G to his new girlfriend, Michelle. G tried her best to be happy for Jayce, but inside, she knew that she had lost out on possibly the opportunity to be with a pretty good guy. G always wondered if there was a shot down the line, and that maybe Jayce and Michelle were just a fling, but when she noticed she was spending more and more time at the apartment, G decided it was time to use her savings and get her own place. Jayce was finally happy and had moved on; and G finally realized that she didn’t have a chance.
About a year or so later, G met Chance, and she thought that she had met Jayce’s match, but when G first introduced Jayce to Chance, he immediately didn’t approve. G had arranged for Jayce to meet them at a restaurant for dinner, so that she could introduce her best friend to the man who had stolen her heart away. The dinner had went pretty well, and G thought that Chance and Jayce had hit it off pretty well. “Maybe this won’t be so bad after all” she thought. After dinner, there was a whole different opinion.
“I don’t like him” Jayce said.
“What? Y’all just spent two hours laughing and crackin’ up in each other’s faces and NOW you’re telling me you don’t like him? Why is that?” G said.
“I just don’t” Jayce said back to her.
“Oh, so if he’s not you, then you not gonna like him, huh?” G shot back at him.
Jayce rolled his eyes. They were standing outside of the restaurant while Chance went and got the car from the parking lot, “I just don’t get a good vibe from him, G. Something about him just doesn’t sit well with me, that’s it.”
“Well, everyone isn’t perfect, Jay. I mean, he may not be everything you want him to be, but so far, he’s been treating me great. Shouldn’t that count for something?” G said.
Jayce let out a deep sigh; he could tell she would never understand. As Chance’s car pulled up to the curb, he gave her a peck on the forehead and said, “I don’t want to argue with you. I love ya, baby girl. If you approve, then I approve. Call me and we’ll double date.”
We embraced and then we walked me to the car. As I got into the car and Chance drove off, I watched Jayce watch me ride off with a man he had second thoughts about. I didn’t realize how important that type of protection was until now.
Jayce being my best friend meant I needed his approval on Chance, but something inside me told me maybe I should have listened to his advice about him.
Sitting with him in the car now; I wish I would have listened to his gut back then.
