Coffee With Characters with Derrick Porter from Wolf’s Challenge

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself! Tell us who you are and what you do! Are you the main character in the story or a supporting role? What do you do for a living? How old are you?

1. Tell us about your story. What is it about and what role do you play?

Hey all. My name is Derrick Porter. I’m a business lawyer, recovering workaholic, and most importantly, a shifter wolf. I live in Great Oaks, Virginia. My story began when I fell for a fiery, red-headed artist named Sydney who wanted to keep me in the friend zone. She didn’t know I was a wolf shifter, didn’t really know me at all, but she was convinced I was a player. My main goal in Christina Lynn Lambert’s debut novel Wolf’s Challenge was to convince Sydney she would be the only woman for me. It was a challenge for me to be patient and not ask Sydney for everything I wanted too soon.

Wolf’s Challenge is the first in the Stranger Creatures series. There’s a lot of weird creatures out there in the world, and crazy things can happen when people discover their world isn’t as plain vanilla as they thought, but don’t worry, each book in the Stranger Creatures series can be read as a standalone. Christina hates cliffhangers but she loves sexy alpha men. I’m a wolf shifter so I’m strong and powerful in both wolf and human form, but I’m not a caveman about it. I’m pretty clever too and I use that to my advantage whenever and wherever I can.

2. Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?

In wolf form, I’m larger than the average wolf. My wolf’s teeth are razor sharp and my senses are off the charts, except my sense of smell which is still above average. As a man, I don’t guess my features are that notable. I’m about 6 feet tall and muscular (but not steroid gym rat huge). My hair is black and my eyes are grayish blue but they get darker depending on my mood.

3. Do you have any birthmarks or tattoos?

No birthmarks or tattoos. My left ankle bears a faded brand of the letter e just below the faint scars from an injury that never fully healed. The brand and the scars are the result of the anti-shifter group called the Equalizers finding me at the weakest, most vulnerable moment of my life.

4. Would you ever want to go hang out with your author? If so, what would you do together?

Yes, I think I’d enjoy hanging out with Christina. We could watch X-Files together or maybe hit a comic book convention and score a bag full of new books, or we could go for a hike in one of Virginia’s beautiful parks.

5. If you could have a super power what would it be, and why?

The ability to teleport would be great. Long drives and plane rides annoy the wolf side of me.

6. What is your biggest pet peeve when dealing with others?

I hate liars and I especially hate traitors. People who betray their shifter brethren get dealt with –torture, shifter jail, or death. My vote is for a fair amount of the first two before sending a traitor to the bottom of the ocean in tiny little pieces.

7. What would I love the most about you?

I’m a pretty decent guy, or try to be anyway. I screw up from time to time but I would give my life to protect the people I love, whether they’re shifters or regular humans. I’m not perfect but I’m loyal.

8. What would I hate the most about you?

Some humans hate shifters just because we’re different. They think we’ll try to use our strength and abilities to take over the world or something, but I hope you’ll understand that most shifters just want to be left alone to be what they are in peace. Shifters don’t want to take over the world, we just want to keep it from being destroyed.

9. Do you think the author portrayed you accurately?

Christina really got inside my head, a little too much for my liking to be honest, when she wrote about me. My strengths, my weaknesses, my fears, and doubts, yeah, she put all that stuff down on paper for everyone to see.

10. What is your idea of a perfect day?

A whole day in bed with Sydney where we have nowhere to be, no distractions, and no disruptions.

11. What is your greatest fear?

Losing the people I love. Rabbit shifters are a close second, though.

12. Someone is secretly in love with you.  Who is it and how do you feel about that?

Sydney’s the only woman I want. Nobody else has a chance in hell with me.

13. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A football player or a helicopter pilot.

14. If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?

I’d make sure I spent the day with Sydney and Angel along with my best friend Jack and his wife Carly, who is actually Sydney’s best friend. It wouldn’t matter where we were or what we did, just as long as we were together and I got to say goodbye. I can’t think about this anymore though. I’ve lost too many people and I can’t imagine being separated from Sydney and sweet little Angel.

15. What is the one food you can’t live without?

Nachos with chili, cheese, and jalapeños.

16. If they turned the book into a movie, who would be cast to play you?

Maybe Karl Urban or Dave Franco. They look a little like me, I think. Here’s a picture below if you want an idea of what I look like.

Coffee With Characters Eddie from Written in Blood

Thank you so much for joining us today!  Please introduce yourself!

Hey, Ember.  And thank you for finally giving me my due.  It’s not often that the real reason people read books get some attention.  Yeah, sure, the author has the job of putting our words down, but we all know that it’s us characters that truly run the show.  Am I right?

Tell us who you are and what you do!

I’ve always been called Eddie, and nothing else.  Well, that’s not completely true, I suppose.  My dad always had some rather choice names for me whenever I messed up.  Or if he was high or drunk; or both on some occasions.  But I don’t really want to go into that right now.  I’ll save that for another time.   And as for what I do?  I kill people.  Not for a living, mind you.  It’s more of a therapeutic thing for me.  It kinda helps push the monsters back into the shadows, for a time, anyway.

Are you the main character in the story or a supporting role?

Well, as much as it pains me to say it, I share the lead with my nemesis, Detective Collins.  Although I think Nathan gave way too many chapters to Ken.  He should have focused a little more on me.  After all, if it weren’t for me, there really wouldn’t be much of a story.  I mean, it IS a crime novel.  If I didn’t do my part, there’d be no need for Ken.

How old are you?

That isn’t discussed in the book.  Just one more of my points about Nathan not focusing enough on me.  But that’s neither here nor there.  I’m somewhere in the neighborhood of thirty years old.  Can’t be completely certain, as I haven’t seen a bio on me anywhere in Nathan’s notes.  Not like he has for Ken, that’s for sure.  I drive the story, but does he try, even a little, to focus on me?  Hardly.

Sorry, when it comes to Ken, I just can’t seem to let go of my anger.  I’ll try to stay focused.

Tell us about your story.  What is it about and what role do you play?

As I mentioned before, it’s a crime novel.  Ken, excuse me, Detective Collins, is just finishing up his rookie year in the Homicide Division of the Foley Police Department, when his world comes crashing down on him.  Not only has his dad’s illness returned, but Ken begins having some physical and emotional issues.  And thanks to his meddling Christian partner, Senior Detective John Filcher, he starts thinking about his eternal security.

As for me, I’ve been locked away for years, watching and waiting for a chance to escape and exact some revenge.  Ken is the main reason I’ve been out of the limelight for so long, and I’ve grown tired of seeing him get to be free and live whatever kind of life he’s wanted.  Needless to say, I’ve planned for a long time to get back at him.  I’ve wanted nothing more than to knock him off his feet and see how well he adapts to having his world turned upside down and inside out.  And that’s just what I do.  After I get free from my imprisonment, I set my plan in motion, and I start killing prostitutes.  That goes back to the therapeutic thing I was talking about earlier.

Anyway, Ken and John must catch me if they want the killings to end.  I certainly won’t stop on my own.  Along the way, I eliminate some undercover cops, and an operative of the Governor’s ‘Special Crimes Division’.

Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?

That would probably be my eyes.  There’s nothing really distinguishable about them, per se, other than the coldness locked inside them.  You aren’t likely to get a caring glance or see love in them.  You certainly wouldn’t find them too pleasant if you were on the receiving end of my cold glare.  Not unless you want to feel a chill run down your spine.  John can tell you about that, if you ever interview him.

Do you have any birthmarks or tattoos?

No.  I have considered getting a tattoo, but I’m too afraid of needles.

Would you ever want to hang out with your author?  If so, what would you do together?

I wouldn’t have a problem hanging out with Nathan, but I can’t say the same thing for him.  I don’t think he’d enjoy any of the fun I could show him.  He’s too much of a goody two-shoes.  At least he is since he found God.

If you could have a super power, what would it be, and why?

Hmm.  Most definitely invisibility.  Imagine what I could get away with if no one could see me!

What is your biggest pet peeve when dealing with others?

People!  Do you really want to go there?  Ok.  A lot of people don’t show the real them.  They wear a mask to hide their true identity.  They act one way to your face, but become someone totally different when the chance arises.  At least I let my victims know up front what kind of person I am.  I’m a straight shooter, figuratively, and literally, as you’ll see when you read the book.

What would I love the most about you?

Probably nothing.  I’m a cold and calloused individual, for the most part.  Comes from the upbringing, I would say.  I don’t know how anybody could be different than I am, if they had to grow up as me.

What would I hate most about you?

Pretty much everything.  See the previous answer for clarification.

Do you think the author portrayed you accurately?

No.  I think he took a little too much artistic license in portraying me and my emotions.  Maybe if he spent a day alone with me, and he managed to survive, then he might be able to better articulate the depth of my anger and cold-heartedness.

What is your idea of a perfect day?

Perfect day?  Is there such a thing?  Not where I come from.  But just for the sake of an interesting interview, I’ll say that the perfect day would be being able to do whatever I wanted, without the fear of consequences.  Who wouldn’t want that kind of freedom?  I bet if you took a poll right now, most of your fans would agree with me.  Go ahead, I’ll wait…

…See?  What’d I tell you?  Never underestimate the depravity of the average person.  That’s what I always say.

What is your greatest fear?

That’s an easy one.  Getting locked away again, for good.  The first time was bad enough, but I don’t think even I could deal with another extended stay in solitary confinement.  In there, I have no way to release those sadistic little monsters running around in my head.  They’re enough to drive a guy crazy.  Or do you think I’m already there?  You can be honest with me.  I can take it.

May I ask you a question, Ember?  If you’re crazy, do you think you know you are, or does someone need to tell you?  And if they told you, would it even matter?  You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.  Just thought I’d ask.

Someone is secretly in love with you.  Who is it and how do you feel about that?

Samantha Adamson.  That would be absolutely perfect.  It would go so far into helping mess Ken’s life up.  He’s so smitten with her, I think it would actually destroy him.  Of course, I’ve thought more than once about doing away with her, just to see Ken’s reaction.  Did I?  Well, you’ll just have to read the book to find out.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Normal.  My life was too much of a wreck to even think about dreaming of growing up.  Now Ken, he had plenty of time to think about having a normal life and dream about what he would be when he grew up.  I’ve had plenty of envy over him where that is concerned.  I guess maybe I did dream of having a life like his.  He’s always been pretty much carefree and happy-go-lucky; even considering some of the hard times he did have early on in life.

If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?

As much as I could get away with before getting caught!  Oh, you want something specific?  Well, I’ve thought about taking out someone famous.  Who wouldn’t matter, as long as they were high profile.  Even now, just thinking about it, I can imagine my knife blade sliding into their skin; the blood pooling around the handle.  Can you smell their fear?  Feel their quivering skin beneath your touch?  Can you see their soul leaving their body?  Stick with me and I can show you so much more.

What is the one food you can’t live without?

I haven’t been in control of much of my life, so I’ve never really thought about it before.

If they turned the book into a movie, who would be cast to play you?

Who would be cast?  Probably some two-bit character actor not worth the industry minimum.  Who should be cast?  Pacino, De Niro or Hopkins would be my choice.  Unfortunately, they’re all too old.  Apart from that, it wouldn’t really matter.  I’m probably dead, or they wouldn’t be making a movie.  Would they?

You’ve had enough?  Okay, well, thanks for your time.  And thanks again for talking with the only one deserving the honor.  I’ll be watching…I mean, I’ll see you around.

Coffee With Characters… Err This should be interesting! The characters (All of Them) of Judge by the Cover

1. Hi—okay, sorry before I start this interview, I really must ask. Why are there three of you?

Oh, hi. My name is Tracy. I’m just here to be the buffer between those two. *points at a boy and a girl glaring at each other with crossed arms*

2. But why do they need—

Trust me. They need a buffer.

3. Oh. Okay then. Well, thank you so much for joining us today. Please intro-duce yourself!

The Girl: I’ll start. I’m Haruna Mitsukai. I’m 17 years old and I’m the main char-acter of the story. I’m a student in my final year at Shady Glenn Private Acade-my. I’m Head Girl (which is kind of like student president at regular schools) and I’m aiming to be valedictorian. One of my main goals is getting into the Universi-ty of—

The Boy: She just asked who you are, not for your life story.

Haruna: Shut up! Why are you even here?

Tracy: Stop it, you guys. *gives a deep sigh* This guy over here is Ryu Debiru. He’s the story antagonist.

Ryu: Antagonist? I’m the main character in this story too!

Haruna: But why? That’s what I’d like to know.

Tracy: Yeesh. I’ll take over from here. *looks over with a smile* I’m Tracy Hasan and I’m one of Haruna’s best friends. I also go to the Academy. Ryu does too.

4. Let’s step back for a moment. What is your story about?

Tracy: So the book is called Judge by the Cover which is part of the Hafu Sans Halo series. It’s a YA/New Adult series.

Haruna: And the first book is about this assignment we have to work on for our English class. And it’s a major assignment—like super important. But naturally, it’s impossible to get anything done with this guy.

Ryu: I’d gouge my own eye out with this icepick before spending five minutes with her to be honest.

Tracy: Ahem. Just to be clear, no eyes were lost in the making of this book.

Haruna: Am I the only one wondering why he randomly carries around an icepick?

5. Wait, I’m curious about something else. What does “Hafu Sans Halo” mean?

Ryu: Well, “hafu” is a word meaning “half.” We’re both half Japanese so I’m guessing that has something to do with it.

Haruna: You’d have to read the book and come to your own conclusions.

6. Wow. I guess being half Japanese means you have some things in common?

Haruna: No way!

Ryu: Not. At. All.

7. Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?

Haruna: I’ll go first. I’m an honour student. I have advanced levels in piano and violin. I play the clarinet in the school band. I tutor. At my church I’m a Youth Minister—

Tracy: Haruna, she means physical features. *turns to smile* Like for example, if you look closely Haruna’s got freckles on her nose—

Ryu: Also her eyes are like this weird blue-green colour like that gross algae that kills people.

Haruna: Excuse me? What do you mean “weird?” You’re weird! When’s the last time you combed your hair? It’s a mess. *looks back* It’s always a mess.

Tracy: *drags palm across face*

8. Do you have any birthmarks or tattoos?

Tracy: Oh I don’t have any tattoos. I’d like to get one but I definitely can’t. My parents wouldn’t like it and it’s against my religion, actually. But I’ve done henna once.

Haruna: Yeah, I’m not allowed to get them either. I don’t want one anyway. On-ly try-hards get tattoos. Piercings too.

Ryu: So you’re calling me a try-hard now?

Haruna: He has, like, a zillion ear piercings.

Tracy: Hey Ryu, do you have tattoos?

Ryu: None of your business what I’ve got.

Haruna: See! He’s rude, isn’t he?

9. Er, how about I change the topic? Oh here’s a fun one! Would you ev-er want to go hang out with your author? If so, what would you do to-gether?

Tracy: No. She’s way older than us.

Haruna: Maybe she can give us advice for university though?

Ryu: Everything with you is school.

10. If you could have a super power what would it be, and why?

Tracy: I’d like to be able to fly. That would be pretty sweet!

Haruna: Hmm…I think invisibility would be great sometimes.

Ryu: She’s lying. She loves attention.

Haruna: He’s just jealous because he’s already invisible.

Tracy: Haruna!

Haruna: Okay, fine. I’ll stop.

Ryu: *ignoring her* Anyway. I’m pretty much able to read minds. It’s not a super power, just intuition I guess. And I have a 4th degree black belt so…yeah, I’m good. But I think it would be cool to be able to teleport.

11. What is your biggest pet peeve when dealing with others?

Tracy: I don’t have any.

Haruna: Some people are just really dumb. I can’t stand idiots.

Ryu: Me neither. I also dislike posers, and that’s pretty much everyone around here. Plus, people can never seem to say my name right.

Haruna: Heaven forbid you mispronounce this guy’s name. Geez.

12. What would I love the most about you?

Haruna: I’m passionate about anything I set my mind to. I never give up!

Ryu: I tell it like it is.

Tracy: I bring the comic relief, but I tell it like it is too.

13. What would I hate the most about you?

Haruna: Hm, I’ll admit I stress out over small things sometimes.

Ryu: She’s somehow both a drama queen and a teacher’s pet.

Haruna: We’re answering for ourselves, idiot!

Ryu: See? Exclamation marks for everything.

Haruna: Get me out of here. Please.

Tracy: I’m just going to go on a limb here and say everyone loves me. Even the haters.

14. Do you think the author portrayed you accurately?

Haruna: I think so.

Ryu: Mostly.

Tracy: I feel like she made me look more boy crazy than I really am.

Haruna: You are pretty boy crazy though.

Tracy: But who isn’t though? We’re teenagers!

Ryu: Stereotype.

15. What is your idea of a perfect day?

Ryu: A day when everyone just leaves me the hell alone.

Haruna: A day spent with my friends and my boyfriend. After all my homework and chores are done, of course.

Tracy: Same answer. Minus the boyfriend part. Ugh. Forever alone….

16. What is your greatest fear?

Haruna: Getting assigned to work on something with this guy.

Ryu: Whatever.

Tracy: That’s a good question. I think I’d be embarrassed to say.

Ryu: Yeah, I’m obviously not answering this question either.

17. Someone is secretly in love with you. Who is it and how do you feel about that?

Tracy: Oh my gosh—please let it be Samuel Hope! Hottest guy ever!

Haruna: He’s too old for you.*looks back* He graduated when we were juniors.

Ryu: Some girls secretly like me apparently, but I couldn’t care less. It would be a waste of my time and theirs.

Haruna: Gross. Why would anyone like you?

Tracy: *leans in to whisper* Pretty sure these two are secretly in love with each other.

Haruna: TRACY! EW—NO!

Ryu: Not a chance.

18. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Tracy: An actress. I want to star in something cool and edgy like Vampire Dia-ries.

Haruna: Do you mean when I was really little or now? When I was little I don’t think I ever thought about it.

Ryu: I’ve always wanted to be like my dad. Now I’m not so sure.

Haruna: What’s that supposed to mean?

Ryu: It means exactly what you think it does.

Haruna & Tracy: …

19. If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do to-day?

Tracy: Wow, this is deep.

Haruna: Yeah I agree. I don’t really know? Go shopping?

Tracy: But what if you can’t use all the stuff? I think I’d rather throw a huge par-ty.

Ryu: I’d probably do the same thing I usually do. Since the day I die could be any day.

Tracy: Well… that was rather cryptic, Ryu.

Ryu: Good. It should be.

20. What is the one food you can’t live without?

Haruna: Waffles!

Tracy: I’m a sucker for junk food. Also my mom’s naan is delish.

Ryu: I like the food from Long’s Restaurant, but I can’t afford to be too picky. I live with six other guys.

21. If they turned the book into a movie, who would be cast to play you?

Tracy: I’d play myself! But I really like Yasmine Al-Bustami. I think she could rock my short hair too.

Ryu: For me, maybe Kato Keisuke? He’s a Japanese actor.

Tracy: But don’t you need someone who speaks fluent English?

Ryu: I don’t care who plays me. As long as it’s not Keanu Reeves. Although… I’m pretty sure Emma Stone could play Haruna.

Haruna: Oh aren’t you just the comedian today?

Tracy: Who do you think would play you, Haruna?

Haruna: Katie Chang or Reina Triendl I think.

Flash Fiction One kiss, as soft as a sigh.

Hey all of my amazing readers. I am so sorry this Flash fiction is so late this week! My brain has been mush with trying to finish book 3 and promote books 1&2. But, here you go! This weeks flash fiction!

She squeezed her eyes shut tight when the loud bang of the gunshot rent the air. The worst part was the eerie silence that followed. It shouldn’t have been that quiet. There should have been…something, right? She carefully opened her eyes and was shocked when she saw nothing. Mason and Luke were gone and in their places were the two biggest wolves she had ever see in her life. She knew the white one was Luke she had him as her pet for the last two weeks but she had never seen the slightly smaller tawny looking wolf, that was snarling and growling at a bleeding Luke, before that moment.

Luke lunged and the two began snapping and clawing at each other. She had no idea what she was doing. She found herself looking around on the floor for the gun without conscious thought. Luke grabbed Mason by the scruff of his neck with his massive jaws and threw him into the solid oak dresser across the room. Aurora saw that as her one chance and moved for the gun that had been dropped next to her bedroom door. Luke was staring at her with his back to Mason, no doubt wondering who she was going to point the gun at.

“Luke, watch out,” she screamed as Mason jumped on his back and bit into Luke’s shoulder with his enormous fangs.

Finally, she reached the gun and took aim. She was starting to panic and that wouldn’t do well for her aim. She attempted, but couldn’t get a clear shot. Luke had shaken him off but was seriously injured and she had no idea what to do. Luke hit the ground and rolled just as Mason took a flying leap at him. There was no stopping it he was headed straight for her. Out of reflex she pulled the trigger and screamed. The large wolf barreled into her and she hit her head on the door frame, hard.

She had no idea how long she had been unconscious, but she felt one kiss as soft as a sigh over each eyelid and opened them sleepily. Luke looked relieved to see her eyes open and she shot him a tentative smile and tried to sit up.

“Don’t move,” Luke growled and lifted her from the floor. She laid her head on his shoulder with a contented sigh and drifted off to sleep.

Coffee With Characters: Amber Eckart

Thank you so much for joining us today!

“You’re welcome, and thank you for asking my author to send me over.”

Please introduce yourself! Tell us who you are and what you do!

“My name is Amber Eckart. I’m thirty six and unmarried, although I do have a long-distance boyfriend who I don’t get to see nearly often enough. As to what I do, I own and operate a small private investigations firm out of south Seattle, and have for almost eight years now. A lot of firms like mine, most of them are highly specialized, but I’m a generalist. I’ll take almost any kind of case provided the work is legal. I do well enough at it to stay afloat, but I’ve had to tighten my belt a few times.”

Tell us about your story. What is it about?

“The series I star in concerns itself with the occasional ‘interesting’ case I’ve found myself working, and so far there have been two, a mortgage fraud and a suicide investigation. I’ll stick with the mortgage fraud. The suicide investigation was…well, let’s just say it’s not a favorite memory of mine.

“The case happened during the robo-foreclosure scandal that went down around 2012…you know, where a lot of innocent people lost their homes. My client was an elderly lady who had found herself in difficulty with her mortgage provider. Right away I could determine that the foreclosure was fishy, and it only grew fishier the more I dug. As far as what happened next, I’m afraid confidentiality rules prevent me from giving out any more details. It was interesting, though.”

What role do you play?

“Catch-up ball. (laughs) In all honesty, it depends on how you look at it. The author chose to tell the story from my perspective, which makes me the star I guess, but in the grand scheme of things I was more like a fly in the ointment for a bunch of powerful people. Or maybe the pain in the ass they didn’t take seriously enough until it was too late for them. Again, confidentiality rules prevent me from handing out any juicy details, but I can tell you this. I mostly remember being worried about keeping my business intact and me and my employees out of prison.”

Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?

“Well, physically speaking I don’t really have any, which is good because so much of my job involves watching people or following people without them spotting me. In my business we call that ‘being made’, and it’s something I try hard to avoid.

“As to what people notice, I do have a scar under my right eye that people ask about. And I will admit that if I wear the right blouse-bra combo men sometimes have difficulty keeping their eyeballs out of my cleavage, but come on, that’s the plight of anyone with D cups.” (laughs)

“If I had to give a non-physical thing about me people have commented on, I’d have to go with how I notice stuff other people miss. I’m not Sherlock Holmes or anything, but I have creeped people out by picking up on something everyone else didn’t notice. It’s always baffling to me when that happens. Usually I’m like ‘how did you not see that, it was right there’. That’s all I can think of at the moment.”

Do you have any birthmarks or tattoos?

“I don’t have any birthmarks, but I have two tattoos. One is what’s called a ‘Tri-Ryche’ in yellow and black, which is the symbol that the metal band Queensryche uses on their album covers. You can easily find what it looks like online. It’s on my ankle. I got it done back when I was in college and going through my rocker-girl days. The other is on my arm, and believe it or not confidentiality rules prevent me from telling you about it. I know that sounds weird, but it’s true.”

Would you ever want to hang out with your author?

“Oh shit, that’s a tough one! Some days I wonder if that guy hates me or something. (laughs) But I guess yeah, on balance I wouldn’t mind meeting him. I’d even be nice about it, although I’d definitely have some pointed questions for him about why he gave me such a crappy love life!” (laughs)

What would you do together?

“I’d challenge him to a game. You know, poker or pool, something like that. Probably poker because I’m a pretty good player and so is he. Since he controls my actions and can see inside my head, I’m wondering if he’d cheat, or let me win, or whatever. I’m honestly not sure how that would go, but I’d be curious to find out.”

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

“I wouldn’t want a superpower. Hell, I’m glad superpowers don’t exist.”

Why?

“Under my right arm is a nine millimeter handgun. If I were to draw it, point it at you and apply about eight pounds of pressure to the trigger you’d die. As long somebody isn’t crazy, a felon or whatever they can walk into a store and buy what I carry or something like it, and in America there are plenty of stores who want to sell people guns. The ability to end life by twitching your finger is historically speaking pretty goddamn superpower-ish, it’s real and it exists. And you know what? People misuse it every day. Fuck, you can’t turn on the news without hearing about how somebody shot somebody else over something stupid. So no, I don’t think we’re ready for superpowers just yet. We can barely handle the powers we have already, and I know myself well enough to know that I’m part of the ‘we’. That’s one reason.

“The other is how I wouldn’t want to be that different. Sure, if everybody had a superpower, then maybe I’d be cool with having one. But I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be the person with some weird-ass ability no one else on the planet had. Working as an investigator I’ve dug into the reasons why people do bad stuff to each other, and a big one is how people are scared of anyone who isn’t them, and the difference is almost always something silly. I mean come on…people kill each other over skin color for Christ’s sake. Imagine how people would react if somebody could, like I don’t know, walk through a wall and they couldn’t. I don’t think it’d be pretty, and I sure as fuck wouldn’t want to be the wall-passer-througher. I get enough static for being a woman whose idea of happiness is something other than marriage and babies. Walking through walls or reading minds or whatever…Jesus, no thank you. I have zero wish to be that special. I’m weird enough already.”

If everyone had a superpower, what would yours be?

“The ability to eat whatever I want and have my system treat it as health food. I know, I know, that sounds shallow but really, I spend so much time in situations where my only options are ‘eat junk food’ or ‘go hungry’ that having the ability to live on Taco Bell and gas station corn dogs without it killing me would be a godsend. Either that or the superpower of not having to pee. Anyone who’s ever sat through a stakeout will feel me on this one.” (laughs)

What is your biggest pet peeve when dealing with others?

“People have this stupid habit of making snap judgements after hearing like one or two pieces of information and then not wanting to change their minds when someone who knows better tells them they called it wrong. I run into this with clients an awful lot. Sometimes people hire me to find something out, like a wife wanting to know if her husband’s cheating because she thinks he is, so I dig and I find out he isn’t. She believes he is, so when I tell her he isn’t she thinks I didn’t do my job, that I must have missed something. I’d like to remind you that these are people who hired me because I’m better than they are at finding stuff out, but noooo, all of a sudden their vague suspicion is oh-so-superior to my investigative skills. It annoys the hell out of me, but when a client pulls that horseshit I can’t do much more than politely negotiate around it. Annoyance is annoying, but I still need to get paid.”

What would I love most about you? What would I hate the most about you?

“Honestly, those are both tough questions to answer because it really depends on who you are, and I don’t know you. If you’re the sort of chick who has a problem with women who want to do something other than the marriage-and-kids thing, I’m pretty sure what you’d hate the most is how I’m bad at ‘girly’ but I’m still making it anyway. Believe it or not, I run into that a lot. I don’t have too many female friends and that’s a big reason why.

“If you aren’t that type of person though, I’m guessing that’s what you’d like about me. I’ve also been told I curse too much for some people, which is something I’ll totally own. When I get upset, ‘fuck’ is my stress-ball. No joke, I’ve made Marines and street cops blush!” (laughs)

Do you think your author portrayed you accurately?

“If you’re talking about what I do, not quite but I forgive him. PI work is by and large a lot of paper-chasing and courtroom mechanics, and he shows me doing a lot of exciting stuff, high-drama stuff. Sure, he mentions the dull procedural parts but he focuses on the exciting bits. I forgive him for that though, because six hours of sorting through documents to find the one you need isn’t all that exciting unless you’re me and you’re living it. In my heart I wish he’d focus on the procedural elements more because that’s such a huge part of what I do, but in my head I know this is why he’s writing the novel and I’m living it, because that stuff doesn’t make for a good book. Or something. Damn, this meta shit will give you a headache if you think about it long enough.

“Anyway, as to who I am as a person, yeah I feel pretty well represented. There are some parts of my life I wish he’d get around to putting into a story already, but he’s a finicky artist-type and everything just has to be perfect. I’ve learned to be patient, but really, some of this stuff he just needs to either say or not say. ”

What is your idea of a perfect day?

“I don’t have those, but I do have perfect moments. You have to understand, I’m pretty grounded in reality so the idea of a ‘perfect day’ doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. But perfect moments do exist, I know this because I’ve felt them. I feel them when everything swings right at my business, when the phones are ringing, all my employees are busy, I know we’ll finish out the month in the black and all I see around me are smiles.

“Look…I’m the boss, and being the boss isn’t a bowl of punch, okay? I have three employees, and they depend on me. They look up to me and when times are bad, and that happens sometimes in my profession, I have to know what to do not for me but for them, because they’ll lose a lot if I don’t. They’ll suffer if I make a mistake, and call me crazy but I’m just not okay with that. Sure, it’s the job I took on when I opened up a firm and hired people, but it sure as hell isn’t easy. Especially when they look to me and I have no idea what needs to happen next but they depend on me to know anyway. In that moment, I have to give them something even if I have nothing.

“So yeah. A perfect day for me is when all is right with my business, ringing phones and everything I already said. When that happens, all I can do is smile and think about how none of it would exist if I hadn’t made it exist. If somebody could make that feeling into a drug, they’d be a millionaire. I’m not even kidding.”

What is your greatest fear?

“Take all that stuff I said about my perfect day and reverse it. I do a lot of work to make sure that never happens, but I know it can. All it would take is a bad decision on my part. Not going to lie, that keeps me up nights.”

Someone is secretly in love with you. Who is it and how do you feel about that?

“My boyfriend, Drake. He’s an old college friend of mine. I never knew he had a crush on me until I crossed paths with him again and well, one thing led to another. Like I said before, right now our relationship is a long-distance one, and it’s for reasons neither of us are happy about. It’s…complicated.”

“As to how I feel about it, jeez, I don’t know. I’ve never been good with the squishy stuff. Mostly, I wish he wasn’t so damn far away. When I’m around him I can relax, not have to act strong and fearless like I do around my employees. He’s really good at that, letting me know that I can be human. I didn’t know how much I needed that in my life until he showed me. I don’t know if that counts as love, but I like it.”

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

“A police officer, definitely. My dad was a cop, and his family has public servants in it going back almost to the Civil War, cops and soldiers and firefighters and stuff. I was an only child, and I really felt the need to follow in his footsteps. It didn’t work out for me. I’d rather not go into why.”

If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?

“I’d get my affairs in order. Again I have people who depend on me, and if I were about to check out there’s a bunch of stuff I’d need to do to make sure those people would be okay without me. If I had time, I’d travel to where Drake is and spend whatever hours I had left with him. If I knew I was about to die, I imagine I’d be pretty scared, and Drake’s somebody I can be scared around. Most everyone else in my life isn’t.”

What is the one food you can’t live without?

“Coffee, without a doubt. In my line of work it isn’t a food, it’s a food group. (laughs)”

If they turned the book into a movie, who would be cast to play you?

“Hmmm…I don’t know. As you can see I’m a size twelve, and there aren’t too many actresses in Hollywood who have that much junk in their trunk. (laughs) If I were to go on acting ability, I’d say Jennifer Lawrence. She’s snarky the way I’m snarky, and she’s mentioned in interviews that she’d love to gain weight for a role instead of always having to slim down. Either her, or Catherine McCormick. I’ve been told I look like her, but only by guys who were trying to get into my pants, so I don’t know how true that is. (laughs)”

Flash Fiction Time! Click, click, Bang

Sorry I missed last week everyone! It was a tough week, but here is the next installment in Luke and Aurora’s story! Hope you enjoy it!!!

I’m not going anywhere. That was what he had said and now she was wondering whether she wanted him gone. She couldn’t help but wonder what was happening. What is he? Did I fall and hit my head and wake up in some crazy paranormal world?

She didn’t feel any different. Her apartment looked exactly the same. She felt her head for any kind of bump, but came up empty. Pinching herself, she winced. Nope, not a dream.

A noise startled her from her musings and she looked up. Luke was standing there in low slung jeans without a shirt. His chiseled abs were on full display and she couldn’t stop herself from running her eyes up and down his body appreciatively. He cleared his throat, it sounded more like a soft chuckle than anything else. Her eyes snapped to his and the smile on his face was almost feral.

“Like what you see, darlin’?” he chuckled.

The deep timber of his voice shot straight through her bones. This man, or whatever he is, is dangerous.

“I-I can’t,’ she stuttered. “I can’t do this. I have no idea what’s going on. You need to leave.”

The look on his face morphed into shock as he stepped closer to where she was sitting up in the bed.

“Well, that could be a problem for me,’ he said through clenched teeth. He looked as if he was warring with himself. Every minute in his presence was scaring her more and more. She didn’t know who this man was. She knew nothing about him or his mental state.

“You’re in danger. I can’t leave you here,” he grated and seemed to relax.

The crash that rent the air startled her and she jumped. Mason came barreling into her bedroom brandishing a gun with a savage look on his face.

“Mason? What the hell?” She said shocked cowering in the corner.

Luke shifted into a fighting stance and placed his big body between her and Mason. The low rumbling growl coming from his throat was terrifying.

“So I guess your dog finally showed you his true self,” Mason sneered.

“What? You knew?” Aurora asked, confused.

“Yes, of course I knew. Why do you think I was trying to get you to get rid of him? He’s going to ruin all my plans.”

“Just go Mason she made her choice,” Luke growled.

“Has she now? To me it looked like she was getting ready to give you the boot.” Mason’s laugh was grating and evil. She was wondering how she ever dated him in the first place.

Leave, Mason,” she said in a shaky whisper. She wished like hell it would have been strong and determined, but she couldn’t muster up the courage with two vicious looking creatures in such a small space.

Mason held up the gun and she flinched. She had never been that close to a gun before and she didn’t like it one bit. Closing her eyes she waited for something…anything, but nothing happened. She looked up and Luke was standing there fuming. She knew instinctively that he wouldn’t let Mason hurt her. She didn’t know how she knew she just did.

“Click, click, bang,” Mason said and pulled the trigger.

Coffee With Characters: Kitty from The Constellations by Kay MacLeod

I had an amazing time talking to Kitty even though we had a bit of an uninvited guest. Asher decided to crash our little party and his arrogance knows no bounds! But, I love arrogant heroes and I am sure you will all love him too!

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself! Tell us who you are and what you do! Are you the main character in the story or a supporting role? What do you do for a living? How old are you?

Kitty: Hi everyone, my name is Kitty Fairlow and I’m the main character from The Constellation Saga. I’m twenty-three and I’m a custodian, kind of a forest guide that tracks criminals and helps the small settlements within a huge woodland.

Tell us about your story. What is it about and what role do you play?

Kitty: I come from a world called Lucidia, and I recently found out that there are other worlds too. One of them has creatures called Tenebri that live there, they use life energy as a fuel for their magic and have nearly destroyed their own home, so they are trying to take over mine.

My dad fought against them in the past and I’ve inherited a spirit that shared its power with him, my senses are all heightened, I have enhanced dexterity and I can bulls-eye any shot with a bow and arrow. I’ve got a magic bow called Venethos that generates his own arrows too. I’m making it sound like I’m invincible but there are others with spirits like mine, most of them are way more experienced and stronger than me. We’re called Constellations and I’m known as The Archer.

Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?

Kitty: I’m really tall, which makes all of me quite distinguishable… I feel like I stand out a lot sometimes.

Do you have any birthmarks or tattoos?

Kitty: No, a few scars from my work but nothing… Asher what are you doing here?

Asher: Come on, love. We both know who people really wanna hear about.

Kitty: But I’m the main character! Not everything is about you, you know?

Asher: Yeah, but ninety percent of stuff is, figured this would be too.

Kitty: *Sighs* This is Asher, he’s one of the other Constellations. Just make sure you behave, okay?

Would you ever want to go hang out with your author? If so, what would you do together?

Asher: Teach her to write nicer backstories for her bloody characters.

Kitty: I’d love to hang out with Kay, I think we’d just sit and chat and drink lots of tea together. I’d probably do most of the talking, I don’t like long silences and she’s a good listener so we’d definitely be friends.

If you could have a super power what would it be, and why?

Kitty: To heal people with a touch, it would be so amazing to be able to take care of the people that I protect. I always seem to be getting injured too, so fast recovery would be very handy!

Asher: Pick kill with a touch, then no-one else gets hurt.

Kitty: How about we keep it light for the interview and discuss your destructive nature another day?

What is your biggest pet peeve when dealing with others?

Kitty: *Looking at Asher* When people are rude and barge in uninvited. Haha, no really, I think because I hate conflict or falling out, I don’t like when people are argumentative or unaccommodating.

Asher: So, you still mean me?

Kitty: It’s okay, you make up for it in other ways. You did make me a cup of tea earlier!

What would I love the most about you?

Kitty: Err… I’m quite a nice person.

Asher: Self-sacrificing. Bloody irritating, but you’d do anything for anyone.

Kitty: *blushing* Thank you…

What would I hate the most about you?

Asher: She never stops talking, asks nosy questions, has to be involved with everything, constantly complains that you aren’t nice, makes you stop killing people-

Kitty: I’m butting in, he won’t stop until I do. Let’s just say, I have my flaws. But they are very much overshadowed by those of my friend here.

Do you think the author portrayed you accurately?

Kitty: I think so, I’m sometimes a bit shy and I like to see others put first and cared for, so I appreciated getting to have the story told from my view. I know I’m not in your face like a lot of leads, but I think us nurturing types deserve to get a main role sometimes.

Asher: Can tell by the comments she did a good job with me. *smirks*

Kitty: Yes, I’ve seen all the ‘AAAGGGHHH Asher is amazing!!!!’ messages. Think they’d still say that if they met you in real life?

Asher: And got to look at me too?

Kitty: *Shakes head* Next question, please.

What is your idea of a perfect day?

Kitty: Go ahead, insert the ‘any day she gets to look at me’ stupid comment…

Asher: Most people say their ideal day would be relaxing or fun. I wanna fight. Be in the middle of as many Tenebri loyalists as I can and cut them down, I spent my life learning how and I’m really good at it. I need a sword in my hand for it to be perfect.

What is your greatest fear?

Kitty: I think I’m speaking for us both when I say ‘failure,’ the whole world’s counting on us to stop this invasion. We’ll do it though, we won’t fail.

Someone is secretly in love with you. Who is it and how do you feel about that?

Kitty: Oh, I’m not really the secretly desirable type, and I don’t get to meet many eligible bachelors while I’m sneaking across the kingdom. Except the ones that are helping the Tenebri and trying to kill me. Asher?

Asher: Don’t flatter yourself, love.

Kitty: I was handing over the question, but thanks for the ego boost.

Asher: Most people that’ve read this book love me, feels pretty good.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Kitty: I always knew I’d be a custodian, just like my dad. I remember being in the forest more than my house when I was a child, learning how to navigate and hunt and survive. I get claustrophobic if I’m inside too long or it’s crowded, give me open woodland and birdsong any day.

If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?

Kitty: We face that prospect every day. I don’t know that I’ll die tomorrow, but there’s certainly a chance that it’ll happen. I’ll keep fighting until the end, I wouldn’t change anything.

Asher: Me either, love.

What is the one food you can’t live without?

Both: Roast duck and plum sauce!

Kitty: See, we do agree on one thing.

If they turned the book into a movie, who would be cast to play you?

Asher: I don’t watch movies. Whoever’s the best looking and funniest.

Kitty: I’ve been told that Daisy Ridley would be a good match! Thank you so much for having us, Ember. Even though one of us was technically uninvited.

Asher: Yeah, it was fun. Might let you come to all my interviews, Archer.

Coffee With Characters: Alexa Kramer Lives Colide

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself! Tell us who you are and what you do! Are you the main character in the story or a supporting role? What do you do for a living? How old are you?

1. Tell us about your story. What is it about and what role do you play?

Hi. I’m Alexa Kramer and I’m from New Jersey. Yes, I’m a Jersey girl. I’m a supporting role in Lives Collide. James is my older brother and I help him get through a traumatic time in his life.

I’m 29 years old and a successful pharmaceutical representative in the tri-state area.

2. Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?

I love red and people notice that right away. Red fingernails, red clothes, red car, red apartment. You get the point. I don’t take crap (I’ll be nice) from anyone. I’ll be your best friend or your worst enemy. I might be all bubbly and happy but I have a hard exterior. I love life and do what I want. I have guys falling at my feet but no one catches my interest. I need a challenge mentally and physically (or should I say sexually).

3. Do you have any birthmarks or tattoos?

Nope. My skin is as clear and radiant as can be. I take after my beautiful mother. I always where sun protection.

4. Would you ever want to go hang out with your author? If so, what would you do together?

Hell yes. She’s a Jersey girl just like me. We lived not too far from each other while growing up. We love to swear, socialize and be goof balls. A perfect day for us is to go shopping and people watch as we sit outside at a café or bar or stay at home and watch “The Sound of Music” in our pajamas (I’m not kidding).

5. If you could have a super power what would it be, and why?

To be invisible. I would love to know what goes on behind closed doors or sneak around. Also, being bubbly and everyone’s cheerleader is quite exhausting. If I was invisible, I could hide and take a breather.

6. What is your biggest pet peeve when dealing with others?

I hate when people smell like they ate a huge clove of garlic. I like garlic like any other person but to smell it on someone makes me sick. Actually, not only sick…it angers me. I’m a pharmaceutical rep and I deal with medical professionals all day. I can’t tell you how many of them smell like garlic. I know it has health benefits but come on now!

7. What would I love the most about you?

I’m the most loyal friend/family member you could have. I’ll have your back when you are in need. I’m very protective of the ones that I love. But I will also call you out on your shit. But I will be your biggest cheerleader also.

8. What would I hate the most about you?

My confidence and peppy personality. People think I act like this because I’m a sales rep. They think it’s all an act. Little do they know this is my true personality. I don’t let anyone tell me how to behave or tell me what kind of image I should have. This is me…take it or leave it.

9. Do you think the author portrayed you accurately?

Completely. I was James’s rock. When he was at his worst I was there every second to help him, especially when his friends stopped coming around. I was also there when he needed a little kick in the ass. With his issues, I was always his cheerleader (my parents were as well). However, I look forward to the next books in the series so you can see me a little bit more.

10. What is your idea of a perfect day?

Being with my family and friends. I don’t care what we do because we always end up having fun. During the summer I like to go down the Jersey shore.

11. What is your greatest fear?

Losing someone I love. I saw it happen with James. I can’t imagine that horrible empty hopeless feeling and I don’t want to. However, this is life. At one time or another, I will lose someone that I love. I just hope it is a long time from now.

1. Someone is secretly in love with you. Who is it and how do you feel about that?

There’s this proctologist in a small hospital that I have appts at once in a while. I ran into him a couple of times and he has asked me out each time. He talks to me like we have dated before. It annoys and freaks me out a bit. Oh, I forgot to tell you he is at least 20 years older than me.

1. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A dentist. I love nice teeth. I would give me dolls exams and brush their teeth. And when I finished I would put my Mom’s red lipstick on them. As I got older, I found out how gross it can be to be a dentist. Far different from examining a doll’s mouth.

2. If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?

Embrace my family and make sure they know how much I love them and appreciate all that they have done for me. I would thank God for the awesome life I was able to have.

3. What is the one food you can’t live without?

Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie. I could eat it any time of the day no matter what type of mood I’m in. Another reason I need to workout a couple days a week.

4. If they turned the book into a movie, who would be cast to play you?

For some reason a young Cameron Diaz comes to mind. I’ve seen her act like me in some of her movies as well as kick some ass.

Author Spotlight RL Jackson

Thank you for this interview!  I’d like to know more about you as a person first.  What do you do when you’re not writing?

Usually, Im catching up on TV, that I missed due to writing, lol

When did you start writing?

When I was around 12, i started making short stories and it evolved from there.

As a published author, what would you say was the most pivotal point of your writing life?

Making sure I treat my writing as a business and micro manage it in a way that I know all the projects I want to come out in the next year, and creating a schedule I can follow to hit those goals.

If you could go anywhere in the world to start writing your next book, where would that be and why?

Hawaii. Therese just something about being in a quiet cabana looking at the ocean and mountains, that id love to experience.

If you had 4 hours of extra time today, what would you do?

Id take a nap most likely. Sleep has been pretty elusive the last month or so

Where would you like to set a story that you haven’t done yet?

In the 50’s or 60’s era. Something about poodle skirts and classic Chevrolets…
[image error]

Back to your present book, Crashing Into Me, how did you publish it?

I self published it. It was a labor of love and I made sure to do all my hard work justice by getting an editor which is pivitol. I’d advised anyone not to consider putting anything out there without a decent editor.

In writing your book, did you travel anywhere for research?

No I didn’t have to. I’ve visited Georgia and other mountain states in the past, so the fictional town is a mashup of places I’ve visited before. As for Florida, which is also mentioned, I actually live here, so need to travel there either, lol

Why was writing Crashing Into Me so important to you?

I wanted to tell a different story, one with realistic high-stakes and one i wanted to read. Also with the lead Male and Female being multicultural , I think it’s something our country needs more of. Who cares who you love? Just love.

Where do you get your best ideas and why do you think that is?

I get my ideas from examples of people around me, music I listen to, dreams I have. And sometimes, every once in a while, a story hits me out of the blue and it dumps in my brain. I dont care where I am, I stop and write it down so I can go back over it later and add to it. When that happens it always a little freaky but it makes the first draft go by in a whiz lol

What are you currently working on? Do you have any new projects released in the coming months? If so,

The sequel to Crashing is underway as well as some other exciting developments I cant mention yet, but stay tuned.

Part II
This or That?
Q: Alpha male or Rockstar? Alpha Male
Q: Winter or Summer? Winter
Q: Salad or Soup? Soup
Q: Swimming in a lake or the ocean?? Ocean shore
Q: Earthquake or Tornado? Neither! Hurricane, I at least know how to handles these
Q: Bath or Shower? Shower. Bath depends on what kind of tub is involved lol
Q: Coffee or Soda? Coffee mornings, Soda through the day
Q: Sausage or Bacon? Ugh, why do I have to choose? Sausage lol
Q: Football or Baseball? Football
