Final Stretch
The rough draft for Book 2 of the Honor’s Path series is now 93% written (or there about) and I am now applying myself fully to get it finished. Still on schedule for being done by December 15th, if not a little before that. That is lucky because as thing work out that is right before I go to visit family for Christmas.
Really looking forward to getting this project written. It will free me up to do a few little side things I’ve been eager to attempt. There’s that Novella I want to do as a psudo-NaNoWriMo project, a short story, and of course I want to start looking at laying out the plot for Book 3.

Pre-Thanksgiving Update
As I previously mentioned, I will be away for Thanksgiving starting today. Still, I time before we leave so I figured it was a good time to make a blog post keeping everyone up to date about what is going on.
The second book in the Honor’s Path series is now 22 chapters long, and roughly 90% written, with about 3 or 4 chapters to go (I initially guessed 24 chapters long, so I was pretty close!). Also looking like my estimate of 120,000 words was decent, although I’m starting to suspect I am going to be low.
In any case, I will try to continue working on that while I am away, but experience tells me that any progress will be minimal. Still, worth the attempt. It is looking a lot like I will definitely make my December 15th deadline, although that may also slip slightly if the book runs long. Still, it should be accurate to within a day or two at least.
What does that mean? Well, for one it means I will soon be able to throw myself into editing and I am going to set a goal of getting Book 2 out by December of next year. I will also begin writing Book 3 at some point, and probably also try my hand at a shorter novella as well. That probably sounds absurdly ambitions, and it is, but this year has made me believe that it is something I can handle so long as I apply myself (plus this year I won’t be contending with moving!).
Finally: minor tweaks to the blog layout. New archive widget on the right and slight changes to the header. Nobody else probably cares, but this is my blog so I get to brag if I want. :3

Holidays ahead
So this Tuesday I get to make the drive down to my aunt’s for Thanksgiving to see my grandmother for the first time since my move (although technically I saw her while the move was in progress). These things always end up being weird for me, because I have this thing where writing when other people are around is completely impossible. Having anyone in the area acts as a distraction I just cannot get over. As such I end up both looking forward to the vacation and dreading it.
Thanksgiving with the aunt tends to be a fairly nice affair though. She has a very nice house located in a pretty area. That side of my family is a bit weird, but in all honesty we get along together surprisingly well. Obviously I hope that the topic of politics doesn’t come up, considering the tense emotions that are running all over with the election results, but to tell the truth that hasn’t ever been a problem with my family. Hopefully it won’t become one this year.
Following Thanksgiving I’ll be finishing up the second book, then at some point will be heading down to visit memere and pepere (my other grandparents) for Christmas. In fact, that trip is largely why I want to finish the second book sooner rather than later. They have a very nice house, but it is an older style without much privacy compared to things that have been build more recently. Writing isn’t something I’ll be able to do while there, but editing is another matter.
Depending on how things are this winter I may need to stay with them to help shovel snow. Both memere and pepere are in poor enough health that they aren’t physically capable of doing such any longer. Obviously I hope that isn’t necessary, but we’ll have to see. A large part of it also depends on my grandparents themselves, and if they want another person hanging around (my mother is already staying with them so they may decide they don’t need any more help).
Anyway, that is what is going on with me through the next few months!

Coming To Grips
This is going to be long. Check below the fold if you care, but be warned politics abound.
I try to keep politics out of things here, mostly because I find that constantly talking politics only makes for unhappy exchanges. It’s something where doing it every so often is a necessary thing, but surrounding yourself in it is poison. Because I firmly believe that politics, at least as they are designed in the US, create a very sharp us/them mentality. I also know that anyone who is coming here to read my blog doesn’t do that because they want to hear my political views. They are largely irrelevant.
On November 8th, I woke up expecting Hillary to win the election. Unlike some projections, I expected it to be a close race, but I thought she would ultimately carry the day. This wasn’t a thing I was particularly happy with, but I haven’t had much to be happy about in US politics for a long time now. I wasn’t happy, but I sat there looking at the alternative and couldn’t even imagine.
Florida turned red. This mildly surprised me, but wasn’t totally unexpected. I have friends down there and knew what the political climate was from their point of view so I always knew it was possible that Trump would win. Then I noticed the Electoral College count was skewing farther toward Trump than Florida alone could account for. Ohio had gone too. And Iowa. It was then I knew. I stayed up anyway, but that was when I knew the unthinkable had happened.
Unfortunately I understand it. To a degree anyway. I’ve grown up in “Flyover America”. People who live on the coasts do not understand just how rural those areas are, what that means, and how bad it is out there. To be 100% clear, I have no doubt that the racists and sexists and any -ist you can imagine came out to vote for Trump. There is no denying that.
But that isn’t where most of his support has come from. Since the good times of the 90’s ended this country has been hammered by a number of recessions. These hit the entire country hard, but any recovery only happened in the cities. There are people out there suffering. Suffering bad. I was one of them—am one of them—but I am remarkably fortunate. There are many who have much less luck, and they are actively forgotten by everyone.
Worse, recently it has recently become popular to ignore their cries that they are suffering with identity politics. “Who the fuck are all of you white assholes to talk about pain,” they hear. “Cops are literally shooting black people on the streets! Take your suffering and stuff it up your white, privileged ass.”
But this doesn’t change that they are suffering. They have been left behind and ignored. All those states I listed voted Obama in the past. It must seem insane to realize that, but it is true. They aren’t super liberal, but they are generally nice and reasonable folk who listened to Obama’s message of change and decided to give him a shot. After all, they had just gotten off the Bush years. Might as well give the other side a turn.
Only Obama didn’t bring change, or rather he didn’t for them. If anything, they only found themselves even more ignored. Obama presided over a recovery, but if you lived in these areas you didn’t see it. They threw in their lot, hitched their hopes to Obama, and then watched those hopes die. Then came along Hillary promising to continue Obama policies. The same policies that had left them behind. Ignored them. And all the while the media demonize them as uneducated, rednecks, bigots. Don’t be one of “those” people.
Is it any surprise that they are angry? Is it any surprise to learn that they hate the people they see mocking them? Trump was their way to throw a firebomb at the establishment. To grab the megaphone and ask “Can you hear us now, assholes?” He was literally the only option they had that wasn’t offering more of the same.
I…am not particularly hopeful for the next few years. I have a few faint hopes. TPP is dead, and many similar treaties are going to die with it. Perhaps the DNC will reform itself. I would like that. And Trump’s acceptance speech was shockingly…presidential. Hopefully he will realize that the post is bigger than the man when he gets there, though it seems like a reach.
But until then all I can do is contemplate the future. What follows are my random thoughts.
Rural Areas Need Rescue
I am not particularly hopeful that Trump will bring the fixes that Rural America hoped for. I can hope, and I will support him if he does try to bring equality to wage earners, but it is a dim hope at best.
What would be better is for the DNC to wake up and realize that their policies have alienated the very voters that at one point made up their base. The DNC likes to think of itself as the party of the disenfranchised, and it is in most respects. There is one area where it has turned away from that, though: they are undoubtedly a party of big business. Of Wall Street. The Clinton family personifies this. This isn’t to say that the Republicans aren’t, but the Democrats ended up abandoning the working class in favor of big business.
And yes, I know they are pushing for a living wage. That’s great. But it isn’t enough. There need to be jobs or it means nothing. People need to feel they have a way to pull themselves out of poverty. The system needs to be revamped so you don’t end up running into a brick wall and losing all benefits after getting a fifteen cent raise, but rather the benefits are gradually stepped down. More than everything, they need to stop ignoring the stagnant economies of rural areas and figure out some way to bring jobs there as well. City only recoveries can no longer happen.
It is a monumental task, one that I am not even sure how to address. Still, it needs to be tackled.
What Of Women?
I hope Hillary’s defeat has less to do with her gender than it does with what she represented: another Washington insider. I hope that so much it hurts.
Yet even if that is true there is a terrible sting realizing that this election the voters tossed aside an experienced female politician in favor of a guy who made openly sexist comments. I am not sure what to say about this. I’m not even sure if it is my place to say anything about this. I cannot even wrap my mind around it, and yet I know that whatever I feel pales in comparison to the many women that hoped to see Hillary shatter the final glass ceiling.
The RNC is not All Powerful
Lets not rose coat anything. Today was bad for the democrats. It was worse than bad. Trump took the White House. Voters swept in a Republican majority to both the House and Senate. They potentially have the chance to appoint 3 supreme court justices. It is the end of the world.
Only not quite. The Republicans have not been granted a super majority. They will claim they have a mandate, they may well be right, but that only means it is time to sit down and think. To look around and see what you can do. To fight like hell.
I can think of no better way than to start writing to your representatives. Do it often. Be loud. Make them hear what you want. It doesn’t matter if they are democrat or republican. Make them hear what people want. This is vital.
With enough popular support the Democrats will have the political capital to stand up against the worst legislation the Republicans may try to pass. They will know that their voters support them, and can filibusterer if necessary. Republicans will hear from those they represent that they are being watched, that their position is not safe, and come election day they will need to be reelected. It has worked before, in dramatic style, and in recent memory. SOPA was crushed this way, against broad bipartisan and corporate support. One party standing alone won’t even have a chance.
Silver Linings
Hillary outspent Trump dramatically and was defeated. This upends so much conventional wisdom. For so long it was assumed that what mattered was dollars, and that was all that mattered. Who had the most money to put ads on TV, on radio, in papers.
Trump went to social media. He preferred to craft a message that attempted to address voters personally. I suppose he was successful. Regardless of what I think of his politics I can only hope that other politicians take note. Reducing the impact of money on campaigns can only have a positive effect in the long-term. Politicians shouldn’t feel beholden to business. They should answer to voters.
Strange as it is to hear, another silver lining is that only 26% of America voted for Trump. Another 26% voted Hillary (giving her a very narrow popular vote lead). The rest stayed home. We can argue and shout about those who didn’t vote, though I see no point. There is no telling who they would have supported.
But the America that existed before the election is still here. Support for gay marriage is here. People support having a national healthcare system. Several states that swept Trump into the White House also voted to legalize marijuana. Background checks to buy firearms are highly supported. None of that changed. Things you may not like will undoubtedly happen over the next 4 years, and I know it is not the time to say “everything will be fine,” but now is defiantly not the time to give up. Midterms are just 2 years away. America survived 8 years of Bush, remember that.
Other Stuff
Too many things to address in one blog post. It is going to take months for me to understand the full implications of this. What about race relations? The economy? International relations? Too much to talk about, and I’m not remotely qualified to speak on any of it. I’m just rambling in an attempt to understand here, to get a hold of this.
I will say the protests I see happening today are both heartening and heartbreaking. Hopefully they will be peaceful. No doubt there will be many people who laugh about it, who tell the people to shut up because they had their turn. Ignore it. Being able to do this is what American politics is supposed to be.
Just don’t shout about how you are angry. Be able to tell everyone what you want changed.
Path Forward
Political discourse needs to change in this country. In the digital age it is too easy to put yourself in a bubble where everyone agrees with you. Where the only people you see from the inside are those that are the craziest fringe. For every election since I have been able to vote I have watched both sides announce that the opposing candidate is literally Satan incarnate.
This year was especially bad, in large part because of Trump himself (never mind how divisive Hillary herself happens to be). Rather than engaging with each other at all I watched both sides demonize each other to a shocking degree. It wasn’t the rhetoric that surprised me, but the intensity behind it.
This is especially true of younger liberals these days. The term SJW gets tossed around a lot, I won’t use it here, but I do see a lot of 20-something’s on social media who meet any opposing view with claims of sexism, racism, and bigotry. The media did their share to push this along as well, for which they should be ashamed. In the process of doing so they have robbed those words of any power they had. After all, if an Air Conditioner can be sexist then anything and everyone may as well be.
LISTEN to your opposition. It’s hard. It sucks. Often it will feel like they hate you, that they are attacking you personally. Do it anyway. You don’t have to agree with them. You don’t have to think they are right. You don’t even have to respect their opinion. But you do need to try to understand where they are coming from. You need to understand why they are in pain, why they are unhappy. Nobody saw this coming because nobody was listening to rural America.
But you know what? Simply shouting them down, trying to shame them into silence? Clearly that failed. It is time to try something new.

Furry Book Month Over!
So to anyone who happened to buy books over Furry Book Month, thank you for your support! Considering that this was our first attempt at something like this, I actually think it went pretty well! At some point I’ll probably briefly discuss some things I think went well in addition to ideas I had for improving Furry Book Month in the future, assuming we do this again sometime.
I mentioned last post that I had bought (and finished reading) the story Legacy. If you want to see what I thought about it, feel free to do so by looking at my Amazon or at Goodreads (they are identical).
In sadder news, despite having planned to take part in NaNoWriMo I will not be doing it this month. I will, however, be doing something like it in the near future once the rough draft to my second book is completed. Think of it as something like a palate cleanser before I dive into editing. My personal “NaNoWriMo” project will probably happen sometime over December/January, depending on when I finish book 2.
Finally, embarrassingly, I need to figure out what I’ll be doing for this month’s newsletter. It ended up sneaking up on me, as it is wont to do. Still, I will work something out for it. Kick it out the door by Monday at the latest.

Only One Week Left
So, there is now just 1 week left until Furry Book Month is finished! Time is running out.
Once everything is said and done I’ll probably make a post laying out my thoughts about the process of running Furry Book Month, and how I think it could be improved in the future. For now, though, I am actually quite pleased. I’ve really enjoyed watching twitter to see all the people promoting the event.
I ended up buying 4 books that were being promoted (Legacy, Off Leash, Flower’s Fang, and The Dragon Tax). Also ended up giving a review for Huntress, which I had read before and forgotten to give a review to. One of the books (Legacy by Hugo Jackson) I’ve already finished reading in fact. I’ll be writing a review of it in a day or two after I finish processing my thoughts on it, but might as well share some immediate impressions.
One thing that is always an experience for me when reading is that I always inevitably compare my skill to the person I’m reading, most noticeably when I see them doing things better than I do. This is an embarrassingly common occurrence, but I do my best to take note of what the author is doing when it happens.
In this case, I noticed that Hugo Jackson spent far more time describing his primary protagonist than I tend to do. Generally I try to keep character descriptions on the light side other than a few pertinent details. I like my characters to be identified by how they behave and act, and trust the reader to come up with an image that they like using the key physical descriptors I give.
Hugo Jackson, by contrast, managed to go into a fair amount of dept about what the protagonist was wearing, something I would avoid for fear of interrupting the story flow for something like an info dump. He made it work, however, and I was impressed by how effectively he managed to portray a fairly intricate outfit. It has made me think that perhaps I need to do some exercises where I focus on describing characters without becoming boring.

Late Night Updates
I finished all my writing for tonight, but cannot bring myself to go to bed quite yet. What better time to update my blog than when I am so tired my eyes hurt? Should be an interesting experience for everyone, or at least you. I’m probably about to look really silly.
First thing first: Furry Book Month is now half-finished! If you haven’t already, you should check it out while you still can. Following that little link will take you to all the officially arranged promotions, however I have also spotted some deals on Twitter under #FurryBookMonth that I don’t recall seeing anywhere else.
Second, I am writing again. In fact I am making good progress so far. Book 2 the Honor’s Path series is now 2/3rds written. Really regret the long break I took in working on it. Yes, I was moving, but not writing always feels like an excuse. Really felt like I was back in the saddle tonight, so I’m looking forward to knocking out this rough draft by mid-December if possible.
Third, this blog! I am (trying) to give it a bit of a face lift. Nothing major, just a few little widgets. There is actually an archive widget I would like to try out because it looks way nicer than my current one, however now it is a little broken and labels all months after July incorrectly. Hopefully that will be fixed with the new update. So, if you see changes you like (or ones you absolutely hate) be sure to let me know.
That’s all for now. Seeing as it is now 5am I should probably crawl into bed before I become completely incoherent.

Furry Book Month
At long last I am able to talk about the promotional campaign I’ve been somewhat involved with: Furry Book Month. This has been in the works for a while, and now that everything is together I am happy to announce that I will be participating.
On the 1st of October I’ll be making a post with all the offers that will be happening, but until then I figure a brief FAQ will help address what I feel are likely to be the most common questions. So, without further adieu…
What Is Furry Book Month?
Furry Book Month is a promotional campaign that allows publishers and authors to collaboratively push to expand the reach of “Furry Books” and the authors/publishers that offer these. For authors and publishers, the goal is to get our books in front of readers who might otherwise not have read them in the hopes that we can expand the market. For readers, this means a chance to buy books for at a steep discount—in some cases the books are even free.
What Is A Furry Book?
A book covered in fur…
…
All joking aside, a Furry Book is any book which features animals which have been anthropomorphized to some degree. That is a fancy way of saying that animals have been given human characteristics. This can range from simple ability to speak or think in a human way, to having many humanoid physical characteristics such as hands and bipedal movement. The exact line for when a character goes from being an animal to an anthropomorphic animal isn’t clearly defined, however.
Please Note: Many books which feature anthropomorphic animals may not be considered “Furry Books” by their authors/publishers. This is especially true of older novels (Black Beauty, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, Watership Down, Call of the Wild, and others) even though they arguably are since they fit the definition.
When Is Furry Book Month?
October 1st through October 31st, although some deals may have a much narrower window.
Where Can I Find These Deals?
I will be making a post advertising the deals that are being offered come October 1st, including where and when they can be found. Additionally, you can join my NEWSLETTER to receive an email about this the day before. In addition, I will be keeping an eye on the event, so if any new offers pop up I’ll be sure to make a post here, and send them in another email to my mailing list (provided doing so won’t result in a flood of spam).

Books are Heavy
Today I finally started unpacking (most) of my remaining things from boxes, including a bunch of boxes filled with books. There is still at least one box with my books somewhere, but I’ve already found all the books I actually care about at this point. So that is good. The thing is, until you got a box filled with books you don’t really realize just how heavy paper can be. Glad I only had to carry them up 1 flight of stairs.
Beyond that, I’ve got only a few things going on with me now:
Ordered a new laptop: The keyboard on my current one is dying, which is actually something of a problem for me considering it hampers my ability to type (which is effectively my job). Really frustrating to be working and find that the letters M, P, and D aren’t always appearing when I hit their keys. I’ve got a regular keyboard, but lugging that around during travel would be a pain.
Ditching my desktop: Related to the above. For the past 6 years I’ve kept both a desktop and a laptop, with the laptop being a cheaper machine while the desktop was much more powerful. The goal here was that since the laptop was less capable I would be less tempted by distractions while working on it, however that turns out to not be a huge problem for me any more and maintaining 2 computers is expensive. My hope is that getting a single, reliable machine will prove less expensive in the long run.
Writing: It has been so long since I’ve been able to dedicate time to writing regularly, but that is finally happening again. Right now I’m just doing exercises and side projects to get back into the swing of things, however I’m pretty close to reaching the point where I’m comfortable working on my second book again.
Paperwork: If you’ve never moved, there is a lot of paperwork that ends up being involved. Most of mine is already handled, however a few details involving my banking remain. Mail forwarding, bank accounts, ID. It seems like every time I turn around there’s something else I’ve found that needs to be updated.
