As most of you know, I love reading. But I rarely mention how much I love reading newspapers. Every morning with coffee I catch up on local and international news with @thestarphoenix here in #Yxe (I tube out the children as best I can ;-) and then I read #guardianweekly @guardian cover to cover every week. #nowmorethanever I find that having a clear understanding of real news and of what’s happening in the world—in whatever format, print, on a phone, on a tablet, although for me, it’s always print—gives me the tools to shape my choices. This week is #nationalnewspaperweek and so I’m posting to share my support for rigorous journalism and for newspapersmatter.ca Thanks @firstbookcanada for reminding me to do this!

This book is making me think so much. By @jonronson So You Think You’ve Been Publicly Shamed is smart and funny and chilling. This quotation from another book makes me think about violence, shame and poverty—so much for me to learn #lovereading #books #sundaynightbook

Welcome to Litville (as named by these guys). Building this we all got on, then, of course, when one part was accidentally knocked, the whole town became a fight fest—kids furious, me trying to chill despite the havoc. But this photo shows the creative side, and, I know that as a writer, the frustrating side is just as much a part of the process as the fun. We calmed down, rebuilt, knocked it down again. Just like writing a book ;-) I used to dream of being tiny enough to explore a city like this, maybe that could be a writing prompt for any of you lucky enough to write on this snowy Saturday #amnotwriting #momlife #yxe #snowdays #creativity #writingprompt #isitbedtimeyet?

A Writing Opportunity

I got this in my inbox today, from One Story. I love them and their stories and I thought one of you might like to try for this opportunity:

Together with the Talve-Goodman Family, One Story is pleased to announce the Adina Talve-Goodman Fellowship. This educational fellowship will offer a year-long mentorship on the craft of fiction writing with One Storymagazine. The first recipient will be for the year 2019.

This fellowship calls for an early-career writer of fiction who has not yet published a book and is not currently nor has ever been enrolled in an MFA program. One Story is seeking writers whose work speaks to issues and experiences related to inhabiting bodies of difference. This means writing that explores being in a body marked by difference, oppression, violence, or exclusion; often through categories of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, religion, illness, disability, trauma, migration, displacement, dispossession, or imprisonment.

Adina Talve-Goodman was raised in St. Louis and attended Clayton High School and Washington University. When she was 19 years-old, Adina received a heart transplant, due to a congenital heart condition, and began writing about it. Adina started working at One Storymagazine as an intern in April 2010 and later became Managing Editor. She supported emerging authors, helped organize donations to prisons, and had a strong interest in issues of embodied difference, illness, and suffering. In 2015, Adina won the Bellevue Literary Review’sNon-Fiction Prizewith her essay, “I Must Have Been That Man.”She left One Story in 2016 to attend the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and was working on her first book when she was diagnosed with cancer. Adina passed away on January 12th, 2018. She was 31 years old.

The 2019 fellow will receive:

Free tuition for all One Story online classes and programming offered in 2019.Travel stipend ($2,000) and tuition to attend One Story’s July 2019 week-long summer writers’ conference in Brooklyn, which includes craft lectures, an in-person intensive fiction workshop, and panels with literary agents and publishers.A full manuscript review and consultation with One Story Co-Founder & Executive Editor Hannah Tinti.

Applications are now open and will close November 15th, 2018. The winner of the 2019 Adina Talve-Goodman Fellowshipwill be publicly announced on January 3rd, 2019. For complete details visit our website.

I almost never get these five beloved monkeys (including you @theworldiscallingyou ;-) together. The kids and I go to Grainfields for a cheerful (okay, bonkers) breakfast on the morning their dad returns from a work trip. We’ve been doing it for years and today, as Yann’s been away for ten days, we’re pretty excited to have him home tonight. These last ten days have shown me a glimpse of how hard it might be to raise kids as a single parent. I have help and school and sitters and I still feel pushed to my limit—my patience is stretched, my body is tired from night wakings and early mornings, I hear myself being stressed and exhausted and grumpy—and my work is all over the place (sorry if I’ve dropped the ball on something you expected me to do!) I have crazy admiration for people who parent alone #respect

@davidrobertsonwriter is one of the nicest, most fantastic guys I’ve been lucky enough to meet; but he’s also an amazing #writer and I’m so happy to be diving (see, I’m by the pool in the photo, gotta love what I did there with the word diving ;-) into his new #book #monsters. From the opening page on, this book is one to stop everything and read: real monsters and imagined, Dave takes his fantastic main character, Cole, through an intense and compelling journey. I love this book!

The look on my face is me trying to communicate by eyeball with my dad to get him to take a photo of me with the kids! I don’t know who is the photographer in your family, but because I’m the one who usually takes the pictures, I’m only in them if I take awkward #fourkid #selfies! So, here we are, crazy happy and hot after eating ice cream (well, still eating ice cream). I’ve been sharing a room with these four cuddle bugs while Yann’s been away #researching his next book. Not a huge amount of sleep happened this week, and zero #writing—I just managed to set the autoresponder on my email yesterday… I noticed the #ARC of my new book about the amazing #carleyallison, so I’m going to have to work lots and lots in the next few days to check that over. But first, I’ve got to get four kids to bed. Always a party…! #momwriter #summerfun #writerscommunity #writersofinstagram
