Use these two words to write a story or poem today. Try to write either for at least fifteen minutes or for at least 300 words to give yourself room to start to explore this beginning idea. When you’re finished, try to think of other storylines or poems that could use the same start point but have a different narrative. What other ideas do you have? Let me know how this prompt worked for you…

Book Review on The Book Castle

I remember reading this, and acting in it, as a child - ‘please, sir, can I have some more?’

Wednesday Writing Tip - Writing Goals...

This week I was reading 9 Practical Tips For Writing by Jan Ellison (in the photo).

I found the ideas in it really helpful, particularly this tip:

3. Set a timer for forty-five minutes, then take a fifteen minute break

This is a trick that emerged out of creativity research, and that I first heard about from another writer, Ellen Sussman. When you sit down to write, set a timer for forty-five minutes. Force yourself to begin putting words on the page immediately, and don’t stop until the timer goes off, even if you have to write about the weather. Then reset the timer for a fifteen minute break. During the break, don’t check email; do something mindless like dishes or jumping jacks or cartwheels. This trick frees your subconscious to tackle bigger issues in the manuscript. You’ll find that when you sit down again for another forty-five minute session, you’ll have made breakthroughs without even trying.

It seems like a good idea to try for any of you figuring out how to discipline yourself as a writer. When I’m writing, I try to write 1000 words in a day. But I like this notion of using time as a goal. Ellison goes on to say that she gets 15 work hours done a week this way and that’s how she knows she’s done her writing for the week (with four children). I think that especially when I’m editing, this 45 minutes on and 15 minutes off could be a great new way for me to work. Not sure I’ll manage the cartwheels, but hey… But before I get down to doing any writing today, I’m going to order her novel on my Kindle. If anything inspires me to write, it’s reading.

It’s been so long since I’ve posted on this blog, I’ve almost forgotten how. But I’ve had good reason to be away, cuddling up with my bonny baby boy. Now he’s settling into a routine, I plan to too. A writing prompt for you every week. Tips from top authors. A book recommendation for you (with photos of books thrown in too). And some chitter chat about writing life with four children… it’s doable, if a little crazy…

If you want to sign up for my newsletter, stop by again and I’ll tell you how. That’s next on my list of things to get organized, after I cuddle that baby of mine!!!

Hi everyone! I just wanted to take this opportunity to introduce you to a company that I hope you’ve already heard of and are super interested in because I’m about to talk about them, hooray for my awkward introduction!

The YA Chronicles is a company run by two bloggers from Sydney, Australia. Their Young Adult bookish box will be sent out monthly and each month will be inspired by a particular theme. Like many people who are living in Australia/New Zealand, shipping can be absolutely horrendous, so *enter TYAC*! (That’s supposed to be a stage direction, but it didn’t really seem like it… More awkwardness, you’re welcome!) Of course, they ship worldwide, so if you’re like me and you often find yourself drooling over subscription boxes then you’re about to need some tissues and a method of payment c;

Each box will contain one new release YA book, one TYAC bookmark and 2-5 other bookish goodies in an adorable box shipped right to your door. The first box will come out in September with the theme “That Hero Nonsense”, you can pre-order one for yourself today, don’t miss out!

The lovely bloggers who run the business often have amazing giveaway opportunities and updates on the progress of their boxes, so make sure to follow them on their social media to get involved!

Spread the word, bookworms, and help out this amazing business!

My excitement for this knows no bounds!!

I hear only good things about this novel. It’s next to read after I finish The Lady in the Tower by Alison Weir. Anyone read All The Light We Cannot See?
